Hi Chris, I really appreciate you adding that comment. I was considering whether it was worth it to spend the time on some of those things. I have been hearing from some that they really appreciate some of those aspects. This really helped to keep me on track. I will keep adding those to my videos going forward. Thank you for taking the time to lend me your thoughts on this, it really did make a difference for me :)
Hi Bhuda Tao, Definitely a big thanks to Mr Martin Knight for making such an excellent game and system for me to have the pleasure to review. I absolutely agree there. Thank you for your thoughts BhudaTao as well as taking the time to view as well! Good to hear from you :)
This video tipped me clear into the “must buy this” camp. Thanks! I already have Ironsworn: Starforged (Kickstarter package arrived last week), and have been really loving that so much. I’ve been following D100 Dungeon for years, but never pulled the trigger- as I own so many other fantasy/dungeon themed rpgs already. But this, D100 Space would be a great addition to my still somewhat small library of sci-if oriented systems. Sidenote- I discovered your channel very recently, and I gotta say: your approach and presentation of your passion is very well done. Thank you so much for adding your voice to the hobby. Much Respects.
Hi Jeremiah, thank you for the kind thoughts. Sometimes I wonder if the extra time and effort would be best placed in releasing content that was less scripted. My OCD always tends to get the best of me there. Though I will be doing more "on-the-fly" videos very soon to increase the speed at which I release, I dont think I will ever give up the level of detail. It is love and passion that gets me though...these take a LONG time to produce ( for me anyway ). In regards to Ironsworn in general, it is such an excellent system.Though I prefer the Hostile Universe, the Ironsworn system just flows so well its hard to pass up. It is my son's favorite. We actually did a few solo sessions this holiday. We actually have the game set up in my recording area right now, we had to make a "take a break" move and we need to return to the game. Such a great game system. I think D100 space fills that gap when we want a more structured ( board game like ) adventure. The D100 series is so very well done. I cannot wait to see more of Martins work for this new IP. Thank you VERY much again for the kind words, they really help to make my day Jeremiah...Thank you :)
A clear and well written review. I would love to see a play through that was as well edited and scripted. A review gives you an impression but seeing it played really demonstrates what it is like. However, finding one as clear and concise as your review is not easy. 😃
Wow Shane, thank you so very much for the uplifting and kind words here. That really means a lot. My apologies for the delayed reply btw. I would like to do a play through in the future. We will have to see how that goes. I am also anxious to see what else Martin Knight has down the pipeline.
I got my copy a month or so ago, and just recently I put in 30 hours over a long weekend. I was glued to the table. I have been singing the praises of this game for a week over the solo gaming groups I wander though. I wish it was more popular. It's hard to find anyone talking about it, or to get rules clarifications.
Hey Farty Mcbutterpants! ...That is so awkward to type back... :P That is high praise indeed. Thank you so very much for that. I hope you find it to be as fun as it looks to be. It certainly has a large following.
Thank you for this review, that was really interesting. This game was already on my list but I've just bought Four Against Darkness so I want to focus on that one a bit before I try something else. Anyway it's nice to see some really good solo games within the space theme, Hostile Solo is another one I have my eyes on.
Hey Locutus Rook! You are more than welcome. It was a beast to edit but it was definitely worth it. Thank you for the kind words. They ( Hostile and D100 Space ) are both great systems. Hostile is by far my favorite universe to live in when I want to escape with solo role playing. This is top of the list when I want a more structured sci fi adventure that is on the verge of an rpg. If Martin Knight does what he has done with D100 Dungeon then this will definitely be something to watch out for as there wont really be anything else to stand toe to toe that I am aware of at the moment.
I love the concept of D100 Space and couldn't wait to start a game after seeing this and some other demos on TH-cam. I struggle to keep all of the 'crunchy' rules in mind as I play, however, and make frequent errors. Also I find the dungeon crawling to be quite unforgiving! My second (real) away mission after the tutorial I failed in short order after getting seriously beat up. It was a mid-level, judging by the operation number anyway, so maybe I'm just not kitted out and skilled enough to tackle it yet. Looking forward to trying again, though.
Hey there again Jenner! The D100 series can be unforgiving if you are just starting out. I have found that it is best to assume that all but the lightest of quests are going to be tough to start. If I assume that, when I know my strengths and weaknesses after a number of play sessions I will KNOW when I am ready to move up the ladder to something harder. I will be killing things left and right for example. Also D100 Space has some new balancing mechanics in the way of crew ( among other things ) that can have you spending money between ground missions that might have been better spent elsewhere. Some of the items you can get ( like fate items ) can allow you to re-roll all sorts of die rolls. This can help insure that you get certain high level equipment that will make your life SOO much easier. I have also learned that starting with a High Dex, or sometimes strength, can be very important early on. I can always work towards increasing the other two attributes later. Then I am at least making the combat rolls or the skill rolls more often than not. You may already realize much of this, so hopefully this helps. As mentioned in my previous comment on one of your posts, I am so sorry for the delayed reply. Thank you so very much for your question. I hope this helps in some small way in the very least. Thank you again :)
Thank you for the detailed reply, and apologies myself for the late response. I had shelved d100 Space for awhile as I was playing other solo adventures but I am back now and enjoying my time with it. It really is a fun game and I really appreciate your tutorial.
Wonderful review. As usual, clear, concise and very well structured. Over one hour of continuous presentation and I still could have kept watching. :) Thank you for the review and, of course, thank Martin for his excellent work. We need more D100 Space, soon. The game has a few shortcomings with the new space travel/combat system that become apparent once you play a little longer: the sheer amount of tests for hyperjumps, cruises and power generation inevitably leads to very high INT in a short amount of time, which in turn increases the CM for the starter ship. Combined with high DEX (I reached 75 with my human smuggler after the first mission), the starter ship becomes almost invincible (with an INT of 50, DEX of 75 and no crew at all, the minimum roll with the worst DEX modifiers from tactical decisions on both sides is always under a minimum of 90 against any enemy ship). Unfortunately, this makes the whole space part just filler for getting to and from away missions. I devised a system where the difference in Tech Levels between ships leads to massive disadvantages for the lower TL ship (eg 10TL vs 35-40TL leads to -70 to the rolls). I had to house rule something to make space combat "dangerous" again and evasive manoeuvres actually necessary. With my unforgiving SCRM :) (Space Combat Roll Modifier), Bridge Crew and Pilots are now crucial when going against top-tier enemy ships. In any case, as you pointed out, the game is truly fantastic - in true Martin Knight fashion, I believe the expansion (Book 2) will refine all systems that need refining and add a lot of content. It could easily add more enemies, more Cybercon implants, more weapons, more ships and a randomly generated galaxy (roll 1d6 x 1d100 to determine LY distance between systems and roll 1d10 ten times to determine the zones of a new system, for instance), and also add an active way to seek space combat (right now, it's either space missions or rare random encounters during jump error hyperjump events, that actually become even rarer the higher your INT...).
Wow Mihail! Thank you for the time you took to write your thoughts. I am sorry it took ME so much TIME to respond. First off, you are always so VERY welcome for all of the reviews and content. As I just mentioned I am thankful for you taking the time to lend your thoughts. I can definitely understand where you are coming from in regards to the in between time being filler. I was trying to get a feel for what I was feeling about that part of the game and you nailed it. I remember thinking that having a discovery mechanic that was multi layered and had impact on multiple aspects of gameplay would be helpful and actually encourage the space exploration portion of the game. When I think about any of the games I play, discovery is such a HUGE portion of my excitement. I am always wanting to see what's around the corner. Loot is the most basic example of this. I think this is why many of us can get caught up in the looting mechanics of games. But looting is such a small part of the discovery process. There are lost tech, biological, mineral and technological discoveries as well. What about first contact situations or perhaps precursor relics to discoveries. There is so much here to play with. So, I am hopeful he will expand there as well. In regards to the tests and systems it is something of a perspective issue for me. I have to have my head in the right place or it can seem tedious. I tend to put myself in the age of games like star smuggler ( which I LOVED ) to help with this. This may be a type of artificial mental crutch but I feel it is worth it and can help me get into this place where the experience can be calming as I input info and track data and see where it leads. I have to get my head out of the pacing space. This is, however, what I do for ME and it may not work at all for many people. But this is my personal solve. Thinking about it makes me want to dive back in again. I am almost sure that even if he does not resolve some of the things you mentioned that we want in book two, given time, I think it will be worked out. Having said that I am always happy for any content that Mr. Knight comes out with. It is more to play with. Thank you so much again for your commentary and your patience as you waited on my much belated reply. Thank you, Thank you. :)
@@adventuresinsolitaire Well, my reply to your reply is late as well, so now are are even. :) Busy times. I completely agree on the necessity for a multi layered discovery mechanic - there is none here, and it hurts the game. There is no mystery, no true excitement in exploring the depths of space - the dungeons (away missions) are entertaining as usual (and frustrating when the dice are really stubborn), and looting is great but, as you say, they are not enough. You whole second paragraph just makes me want to parrot it - my thoughts exactly! Regarding tests and systems - yes, it can be calming, but if there is no real incentive to push on, no difficulty, no risk (other than sheer dumb (bad) luck), then to me it's not calming any more - it's boring, tedious, repetitive. I have no experience with Star Smuggler, unfortunately, as I have arrived too late in the land of solo non-digital games. However, I see what you mean with data input and tracking - but if the results tend to be predictable iterations, the process becomes rather meaningless. Book two is definitely on its way - check Martin's website - it clearly states that D100 Space - Book 2: A Universe Builder is in the works. So fingers crossed for some of your suggestions and ideas to make it in this expansion. Thank YOU for taking the time to write here. I hope you will keep going - your videos are as insightful as ever, and a joy to watch/listen to. I will now go back to my hybrid Pocket Dungeon 2.0/NoteQuest Expanded World/D100 Dungeon/Mini-rogue solo RPG adaptation - I ended up making my own game from all these sources and it works quite nicely (danger/adventure/exploration/huge randomized variety). If you haven't alread,y I HIGHLY recommend you check out these systems (especially Pocket Dungeon - very old, simple, yet can become as complicated as you wish) and NoteQuest EW (which is basically D100 World Builder LITE). Happy gaming and may the dice roll your way, always. ;)
I'm not sure, I know that ( as of now ) there is no a lot of interest in the playthroughs after the first one in the series. Either I am not very good at delivering it for everyone ( very possible ) or it is just not something a lot of people seem to like. I do plan on doing more playthroughs but it seems like the interested drops off a lot the longer they run. We shall see. What are your thoughts?
@@adventuresinsolitaire I thought you ran it just fine. Actual plays tend to have a lot of drop off after the first episode. Keep in mind I'm a big fan of Starforged though and I always enjoy seeing things from Neurodiverse people :D

Great review! I own D100 Dungeon and 3 extra books for it, but I’m not that game’s biggest fan. Though I have been meaning to get into it again, to see how I feel about it now. But every time I look at the world building book, it’s just too much information and too many sheets of paper required.
