On our first stop on our tour of the historical and archaeological sites of Turkey we visit the ancient site of Mount Nemrut. Soaring 7,000 feet into the sky, this lofty mountain top is home to a mysterious and ancient ruin. A massive grave and cultic complex commissioned by the Persian and Greek leader Antiochus I. The tomb is flanked by enormous stone reliefs of gods that highlight a mix of influences that met in this area at the time showing Greek gods wearing Persian clothes.
The most striking feature of this site is the enormous burial mound. An unopened tomb that remains a mystery to archaeologists and historians alike.
Join me and my team as we work to uncover the secrets of the ancient temple of Mt. Nemrut.
I love the anti theft measures in that tomb. Most civilization would've buried it, put huge stone doors in an attempt to stop looters. These guys just went "p e b b l e", and it fucking worked amazingly.
@@djalexander968 Time and effort. You can't break in, steal something and get out. That's a massive pile of small rocks, you're gonna need a full team and a long time to clear that. Not to mention, the rocks you remove need a place to go. It's the kind of thing they're definitely going to notice before you're done. Given how an excavation team who had permission to do it, failed, there's no way a bunch of grave robbers can pull it off.
@@djalexander968I'd guess because the pebbles basically ARE the tomb complex. Most modern archeologists try to avoid destroying the buildings they're trying to learn from.

(even purely from a practical standpoint, you could help yourself by realizing that this is not a good use of your time or energy. Think about it: how often do YOU read a youtube comment, and then immediately become so enlightened that you proceed to change your entire religion and worldview? Never. Literally not once, because that's never happened in the history of the world. So maybe try "spreading the good word" another way that actually.. you know.. _does something?_ Or you could try *not* proselytizing all over the place, because if you actually _listened_ to other people, you'd know that non-christians *hate* when you guys do this crap. It pushes people *further away.* Maybe instead of being obnoxious, preachy, and condescending, y'all should try leading by example and actually being kind and loving [you know, like Jesus..?]. Idk.
Because right now, I can tell you that the reason most people don't want to be Christian.. is the Christians. It's due to the awful, immoral, detrimental way that [the most outspoken] Christians tend to act. They're hateful, cruel, authoritarian, and about as far from loving and kind as one can be. And they use God as a shield for all their wrongdoing, which is literally breaking the first commandment in the most literal sense). Now, I realize that you might not be one of those people. However, it's a safe bet that you don't call them out, and you still vote for the same people as them.. so you're part of the problem on some level. @@CharChar2121 Can only agree ! While debunking on some subjects from time to time may be ok, it's not still the right people that really would need them who will watch them anyway. Also all this debunk and reactions stuff becomes old quickly, and isn't constructive after all.

As a geologist, I really do appreciate the work you've done, making our underappreciated little science entertaining and mainstream. I'm still kicking myself for missing the Turkey trip, but here's hoping there's another in the future.

Honestly when you get used to that for extended periods of time, it isn't all THAT bad, but it must have certainly be a challenge.
Just goes to show that people from antiquity were just as capable as we are, except instead of working with massive excavators and cranes, they were like:

@@Volvith I suspect he erred in saying 6000 feet (and above.) If he meant to say 6000+ meters, that is an altitude at which many people have died from HAPE and/or HACE. High Altitude Pulmonary Edema, and Cardio Edema. Even when they have taken extensive efforts to adapt to the altitude slowly it can still happen, to even very experienced people. Those efforts can reduce the risks, but not eliminate them entirely. There is still an element of chance.
It doesn't seem to me that this would only be 6000+ feet, but that is what he said. And if 6000+ is correct, then you are right. It isn't that big a deal.

It always saddens me to see such amazing art like those massive sculptures be in such disrepair from the hundreds of years of wear, makes you wonder how amazing they looked before the damage and especially before the decapitations. They still look really neat though, even if time hasn't been very kind to them

This is such a good series so far. Can't wait to see even more.. Would love to see an egyptian or chinese one in the future! Especially with the discovery of the sinkhole ecosystems, it could be a fun thing to look at. But for now, I can't wait to see more episodes of this!

I think most audio editing software has some way of reducing wind noise - unless it was so windy that this is what it sounded like AFTER reducing wind noise

I am of Cypriot descent and remember going to Amathus and Kourion when I was too young to appreciate being there. I know Cyprus has a long history due to being rich in copper, strategically located and religiously important as the birthplace of Aphrodite. Would you school us please?

I'm really excited for the rest of this series. I very much enjoy the way you describe things and then go into the history of them. The Leo statue was my favorite part due to how beautiful its construction is. As the areas around the Mediterranean and Near East have my favorite history and culture, I'm thrilled to think that you'll have more content revolving around Turkey and the ancient history of humanity that comes with it. Keep up the wonderful work on educating the masses and demonstrating how fascinating our species's story is
Such an interesting point about iconoclasm! Another example: what Soviet Russia did with the cultures in the countries they occupied. I'm from Latvia and we've lost countless artefacts, pagan religious traditions, and countless everyday traditions from our ancestors. I'm sure it's similar in other Soviet occupied countries as well.

Nice! I doubt you'll see this, but did you visit Hatussa while you were there? It's honestly one of the best preserved and most enlightening surviving sites of the middle bronze-age, but nobody on youtube seems to have made much of anything about it
So glad you talked about that corrugated metal building. Betty and I were standing in front of it trying to figure out what it was, it looks like it should be a disused chair lift or something. We were even looking out to see if we could see where it used to go.

Interesting, I live on an Island where the neighboring island's peak is 2351 Meters, or 7,713 feet. Just slightly higher than this mountain, seeing how your view is I think I also have to finally scale that mountain, it doesn't have stairs though, it's a bit rougher.

There are many parallels of the Gods, Aramazd with Zeus, Anahit with Artemis, Vahagn with Heracles, Astłik with Aphrodite, Nane with Athena, Mihr with Hephaestus, Tir with Apollo. Where it all began goes way back, and the Tepe observatories and fertility sites are clues to a great genesis of consciousness.

Ok but can we stop calling eastern turkey “anatolia” anatolia is the peninsula. Just say eastern turkey (or armenian highlands when fitting, ofcourse not all of it is armenian highlands) In this vid he kept saying “greek, persian and anatolian influences” but anatolia is not a country or culture, he should have said armenian but the turks would have probably been to butthurt.
Btw aramazd and anahit come from the persian Ahura-Mazda and Anahita. Armenia addopted zoroastrism when they became a vassal under the rule of Cyrus. So a few centuries before the greek influences where brought in by Alexander. Before the conquest by cyrus they had other names for their gods but I forgot
