  • This week sherpa Stephens mystery tours took up the ever popular Slieve Donard.... But the hardest way?
    Starting off in Donard car park we summitted Millstone ant Thomass mountains before taking on Donard itself. A good fifty minute hike up the steepest possible side, a lot of huffing, puffing and of course a few view breaks we made it to the highest point in Northern Ireland.
    Thank you as always to @stephensophietracygrace626 for the fantastic thumbnail 👍

    Geoff, no easy way to climb Slieve Donard though that is the one to avoid the crowds👍 A lovely day for it☀

      Definitely not Gerry, always nice to get to the summit anyway you do it. Fortunately we got a cracker afternoon/early evening for the hike 👍

      It was definitely a tester, but very enjoyable at the same time. The sun on the back helps as well 👍.

      Hi Colin, definitely a great hike and good way to do Slieve Donard if you want to avoid the main path. Cheers for watching 👍, ps it does get steep near the top but nothing you wouldn’t have done before.

    Another nice one mate. Just as tough through forest across at The Ice House, Black Stairs and Thomas’s. Best chippy in Newcastle is the wee chuck wagon beside the Barbican garage on Dundrum Rd. Enjoyed bud as always.

      Cheers Robert 👍. We had thought of doing the black stairs but wasn’t sure you could get up by there. Is that wagon at the petrol station on the road heading toward murlough caravan park do you know? Thanks for watching and commenting 👌 always appreciated

    Of all routes up Donard that is a tough one. I’ve only gone up from Crossone once and recall thinking it was my last time ever, so far it has been and is likely to remain so. There was a horrendous boulder field with real ankle breaking stuff.

    • @GeoffGreenawayOutdoors
      @GeoffGreenawayOutdoors  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, cheers for commenting 👍 . It definitely was tight enough this way but I’ve heard Crossone is difficult as well. We where on Crossone the other week and looked up towards Donard and seen a boulder field so that put us off the idea of it, don’t fancy breaking an ankle.

    Tough route, well done. As a mountain runner I would do that route but just go straight for Thomas and then Donard, bar the black stairs its the fastest way up. Zero traffic in comparison to the GRT

    • @GeoffGreenawayOutdoors
      @GeoffGreenawayOutdoors  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you, fair play for running the mountains, I’d love to give it a go some time. Your definitely right about the traffic on the trail. Would you run the mountains much during the week?

    Fair play to yas taking on that route! Back in 2016 came down that way from Donard to Thomas mountain, the air show was on and below Thomas was a great perch to watch it from while having a bite of lunch, dozen or so guys with big cameras had same plan. The red arrows came that year, some flew pretty close and ya could see the pilot really clearly. Meant to be coming back to Newcastle again on 22nd of June, unfortunately I’ll be working, recommend Thomas if your about.🛩️

      @@GeoffGreenawayOutdoors I think it was dead on Geoff, pretty easy going downhill and it was dry at the time, imagine if wet it might get slippery.

      @@BestlifeWildCampingOutdoors yea there was a couple of rock faces we had to go up so they would get pretty slippery in the rain.
