- Today I talk about spiny tailed lizards and whether I think they're underrated, are better than other lizards and a bit about themselves. They're a species that loves heat more than most other animals and can go with almost no water. The Uromastyx in this video was shipped in by someone who could no longer keep it, so you get to see an example of a slightly more beat up, lethargic spiny tail. What do you think about them?

Mine loves when I rub his cheeks. Squishy cheeks are definitely a huge reason why I got him. Also they’re always grumpy not sad. They judge you from across the room

our uromastyx definitely is very aware of everything and his bowl of lentils gets him going always :) he's the sweetest boy. also, don't be scared of brumation, they do brumate for a couple of months and can go without eating for a solid while while brumating.
My girl absolutely goes off the walls, for fresh peas. She might act cranky and give me the 'No Touchy!' attitude at first, but the second she sees I've brought a peace offering of a handful of peas, she comes running and happily eats them out of my hand.

That's what I was thinking. She's not very bright so I assumed a female too. But that isnt always the case. There is always those rare instances.

My sister has been begging for a uromastyx for almost a year now, ever since she laid her eyes on one at our local reptile store!
I adopted one from a fellow leaving town last fall and she quickly became my favorite lizard. To the point I just adopted a male ornate as well. I love them. When they're set up properly, they're extremely active and once used to you can be pretty outgoing and curious. I can hand-feed both of mine their favorite treats and I definitely wouldn't call them 'boring'. If they're kept too cold, then yeah they'll be boring 'cuz they'll literally spend all their time under their heat trying to get warm, or hiding.
They can be pretty nervous in new surroundings/new cages for the first couple weeks after a move, so yeah they will be skittish and hide away a lot and seem 'boring', but I swear, once they're settled in, they are amazing lizards.
Here's a nice tip: Save your money, get a beardie. (I'm a beardie keeper)

Problem with using seeds as substrate, is some uros will just eat them constantly and end up getting obese....
They're also very likely ingesting their fecal matter and urine while doing so, as it's harder to spot clean when they poo and then proceed to fling it all over the place as they start to run around and dig. This can contribute to parasite overloads if your Uro's got any to begin with.
Soil/Sand mixture of about 50/40 is a better option.

Monet Kristen i own a uromastyx and people get very angry with me for not keeping it on substrate cause it’s not natural. So in my opinion I don’t see a issue with tile or paper towel. But if you wanna add a box for them to dig in that works too.

we have a lot of wild uromastyx here in saudi, but no breeders that I know of in the area. they seem to be more interested in eating uros than breeding them, unfortunately. also, uromastyx do not live on sand primarily. the ground they live on in the wild is quite rocky.

my uromastyx is probably one of my favorite reptiles
they're tons more mellow than some of the beardies i've been around on top of being extremely easy to feed and care for. plus they're just really cute
Actually my uromastyx comes to the front of his terrarium when he sees me and loves eating from my hands.
He put his 2 front legs on the front of the terra and looks at me often ahaha i love him
I have both a bearded and two uros :) just two things I didn't like you said was they eat the same food. They really don't! Uros are vegan! And therefor they actually don't smell which I think it's amazing!
Their stomach etc is not made for insects... It's really not recommended to feed them live food.
Also they aren't supposed to have water in their enclosure because that can give them ... "Tail rot" I think it's called in English..

We have an uromastyx and a beardie. But our uromastyx always comes wandering to me. He has so much wisdom in his little eyes! Love him! ❤️
Looks like a female, they typically have a fair amount of color variation. :) That one is kind of potate. But the male I had for years and year was awesome. They pay attention to you, they do interact. I ended up cutting a window in the side of the background so my Uro could peek out at me when I was on the computer. They are goofy. I far prefer them over beardies, and I've had several beardies. Thus far it's actually been my favorite of all the lizards I've kept.

I have a uromastyx. His name is Toby. Toby is a good boy. He’s shy, a total mama’s boy, a chunk, and a cuddler. He’s weird. We like Toby.
Love the video. Only thing I'd argue with is personality. It's definitely true that Uro's don't usually come right into your home ready to interact with you. They make you work for it for months. But after time, they definitely start to open up a lot more and show their uniqueness off. Mine is incredibly lovey and even a bit of a grump when he doesn't get his way (cutting back on favorite snacks for healthier choices, etc.) He will, quite literally, turn his back to me and refuse to look at me because I want him to eat his healthy veggies. Lol

honestly for someone who doesn't really want to deal with insects, the uromastyx is a great option for me. i'm really glad i found out about these lizards!! i actually really like them a lot. when i'm ready i think i will get one :)
I used to have one, she was a orange/red color and I loved her, I named her ruby and she was my first ever pet lizard, she honestly got me into the whole wanting lizards as pets
That name is actually adorable when you think about their faces. When it comes to reptiles, I'm more into snakes, especially boas, rainbow boas and anacondas. Probably bc they're strong, beautiful and native to where I live (Brazil), but lizards are great too! My personal favorites are teigus, they're amazing

I had one of these guys. They are obsessed with eating dandelions. We’d pick the flowers and like you said their pretty mellow, I’ve never seen a reptile move faster than when you gave it dandelions.

I have a beardie and a Uromastyx and surprisingly my Uro is way more active 😂 I got both lizards when I was obsessed with Fairy Tail, so I named them Natsu (uro) and Dragneel (beardie)
I love seeing Uromastyx videos. I have had mine for a looong time. She isn't terrible colorful, but has a bit of yellow on her back. She has always been very calm, and goes mental when she decides to dig and it is hilarious to watch.
I feel like Alex makes the text on the screen go by super fast so that you have to rewind it and then try to pause it perfectly to read it just so he can laugh at all of us later.

I did a lot of research on my Uro (named Colonel Mustard) and live in AZ. I use my rocky soil as substrate. I learned that the seed substrate can cause obesity. I’m fortunate that I can feed him things I am growing such as aloe, hibiscus, and some native bushes that are similar to its native environment. He is skittish. But I like his little ‘tude’. It suits him. 🥰

"Chuckwalla and Uromastyx" group on Facebook is about the best group you'll find for their care. With a lot of these high desert species, you cannot get away with the same care as a bearded dragon, they are really different and many of them will not thrive or even survive without loose substrate (obviously not calci sand, but regular sand/soil mixtures). They also need much larger enclosures as the hot spot usually requires 2-4 regulated bulbs to achieve, and that makes a bigger hot side and they need more space for a temperature gradient. Chucks and Uros definitely aren't a species to get into without doing a ton of research from actual reputable keepers/breeders of them, they are expensive to set up, feed, and light.

I am thinking of getting one, and doing a lot of research, just going to say that depending on the specific variety they actually can be very beautiful, like Ornates are beautiful blue and yellow with black, some are green, some red, some bright yellow, so they aren't all the kinda dull dingy olive colour shown here

Hi, mali uromastyx owner here! It looks like the one you've got there could be a moroccan uromastyx, looks more male in shape. My mali, Link, is one uro that alternates between being super hyper and very chill. If you want to see your uros go crazy, give them bee pollen or dandelions. Link goes crazy when he hears the shake of the bee pollen jar. I personally LOVE the chubby cheeks of uros, and when you look close enough, it looks like the curve of their mouth is a little smile. Another thing I love about uros is how the color on their back brightens when they bask, ornates look especially gorgeous. Uros are definitely underrated and are VERY adorable and perfect to cuddle, and their vegetarian diet is pretty easy to handle.
For anyone who does want to learn more about uros, two books I highly recommend are "Uromastyx Pls Other Common Agamids" by Jerry G. Wells or if you have a bigger budget for books "Uromastyx: Natural History, Captive Care, Breeding" by Thomas Wilms.

Alex, you are a very educated/good hearted young lad from the videos I have seen so far, which believe it or not is a rarity in the current times. I wish I had gotten into herpetology at your age, as I didn't know I'd have such a burning passion for reptiles later in life and I'd know a whole heck of a lot by now. Thank you for your channel and for taking care of animals and teaching others as well. You rock! Take care of those teeth. I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed at once when I was 16 and they were all impacted (below gumline) so they cut giant craters in my mouth. I had blood streaming down my cheeks all day the first and halfway through the second day haha. My mother left me in the van (I look a lot like her) while she parked at CVS to get my medicine, an old lady from our church came up to me thinking I was her and said Hi how are you? I was still under the influence and my head wobbled as I turned towards her saying HOWS IT LOOK LIKE?! With blood streaming down my face. I was told she ran to her car, and she told my mom the story at church later. Be well :)🤘

I recently took in a supposedly 14 year old Uro who was in a 29G crappy tank with minimal heat and only a single 13w spiral 5.0 uvb...and she really wasn't that bad looking. Bit skinny some stuck shed...but 2 weeks later she looks like the one in the video. They are incredibly tough.

Don’t use seeds for substrate, they will eat it and get full on it, I have a small tank section with some clay and soil. I use ceramic tile, it holds heat well.

There was a house lizard in my dubia bin today, sadly I took him out if the bin, I am trying to start a colony so I feed and water them but try not to mess with them to much other than that, so I don’t know how long he was in there but there were a lot of baby lizard poops that I cleaned off the side.
Uromastyx are the best imho. I have owned over 60 lizards since 1990 and if you put the time into a Uro, you get more back, way more then a Beardie...plus no bugs! Egyptian Uromastyx get big and act like a dog. My 3 Egyptians are over the top. They love to cuddle, come when called, follow commands and 1 of my Egyptians free roams in the room I am in during the day. She is trained to sit in her cat bed with her basking light and UVB light which sits by our front window and enjoys interacting with our large family, getting down to run the room before returning back on her own to her hot basking spot. At night she goes back into her enclosure to sleep, but she is with us all day because she LOVES people to an extreme. She refuses to hide and prefers to be part of the conversation and in our faces, literally. She loves to play with my youngest 3 children and crawl over and into everyone's hands and laps to cuddle up. She demands interaction continuously and each night sleeps on my chest or my Hubbys as she throws her hands and arms back on us in a sprawl. Her brother will slap you five for his treat and is very much a people person to the extreme too. All 3 have crazy cute personalities! My other lizards are a 12 year old Mali Uro we have had his whole life, and 2 red saharan Niger Uros, 1 oceletta Uro, and in the past we also had a Yellow Niger and 1 more Egyptian, every single one having amazing personalities. If worked with, the skittishness disappears and they become like puppies. But even better. I definitely prefer the Egyptians because fullgriwn they can be up to 3 feet long and several pounds! But they do need to be worked with otherwise they will never get to be social cuddlebugs like I have. But do I recommend them, yes! They are under appreciated but a great lizard IF time is put into them. Btw I also own currently 6 Beardies, 2 leopard geckos, and 1 bakeri iguana and 1 Bananna pectinata iguanas. In the past I have owned green iguanas, swifts, chameleons,skinks, etc....and while ALL my lizards are my favorites, Uromastyx are definitely underrated.

It’s really not suggested to use seed substrate for uromastyx since their waste gets mixed in with the seeds and they’ll ingest the contaminated seeds. This uromastyx also seems to be about to shed his tail (their tails go paler when it’s about to shed). Uromastyx geyris are generally always wild caught but there are plenty of captive bred animals going around.

Using seeds as a substrate is really bad for their ankles. they are made for living on rocks and hard packed soil not super lose dune sand.

Side note, I've met quite a few people who were beginners who's beardies died because they were not provided enough moisture. Please just use a water bowl. It takes work and experience to balance a reptile environment and diet in a way to support no water dish. Don't take stuff away that could potentially be life saving. Better safe than sorry.

I've seen a bunch of these guys at the Cleveland reptile show, been a while since I've been there but interesting information. I went the bearded dragon route and I'm glad I did I now own a really rare bearded dragon who is my favorite little derp. x)
I use a mix of fine ground coconut husk with dry red clay to make a harder soil like substrate and my uro loves it and its never caused any issues

Could you please make another video about Niger/ Saharan uromatyx because They are rare and there isn't much info out there on them and it's hard to find info, and I want to know as much as possible.
My uromastyx Mad Max is the coolest, he pretty awkward but he’s awesome, loves eating his kale and arugula and I love hearing him peck at seeds and the way they snap when he eats em.

i recently got a teen uro and he is very moody but is fun to watch and play with.
I didn't even know what this was. The contrast between the upper body and tail is interesting. The face is really cute, I love the cheeks and mouth
Uromastyx recommend equipment: minimum size 36 wide × 24 deep × 18 to 24 tall pvc enclosure. Arcadia t5 34in d3+12% uvb bulb with lugarti 36in t5 reflector. Lugarti 75watt infared heat projector for basking with herpistat 2 thermostat 1 probe for basking temp and the other probe for monitoring the temp of cool side of enclosure. I recommend getting a nearpow grounded outlet timer for your uvb light so you can set it to come on and off at the correct time by itself and you can do the same for your basking bulb with your thermostat. A 13in reptile hide box and I buy a roll of 16in wide × 16 feet long Casoman tool box liner and put a piece across the top rapping around the back going all the way underneath so it gives the hide a soft floor of the hide box and the layer on top holds heat for their basking platform, they love this stuff, I have tried all sorts of things but they love it to lay on the best. A Pet tekk large worm feeder rock for a raised feeding platform so substrate doesn't get in their food and you can put in a 13cm ceramic reptile worm feeder dish so you don't have to use the cheep thin plastic dish that comes with it. A medium exoterra water dish. If you get a baby use the tool box liner I mentioned for a liner because you don't want substrate in the first year to year and a half of their life but once they are old enough Jurassic natural Australia outback desert sand mixed with 1 to 4 in rocks is correct for them. For artificial plants make sure they don't have small plastic leaves that they can pull of and eat. I give mine rep cal, or zilla juvenile iguana food mixed with lentil seeds and I give them organic romaine lettuce hearts dusted with repashy superveggie, it has all the calcium, vitamins and nutrients they need along with all the vitamins and nutrients that is in the juvenile iguana food and the protein in the lentil seeds and I give them all of this daily it is all daily stapel foods and mine are unbelievable healthy and active, also turnip, mustard, or colard leafy greens are also staple foods. All the information you didn't ask for😄 I wrote this out because it is hard to access specific easy care info. Everthing on uromastyx is vague and I spent hours upon hours researching to find what was good fir them and ironed out the details while keeping them. I recommend a 115 degree basking spot with about a 90 degree cool side of enclosure. Alot of people say to have a 120 to even 130 degree basking spot but I find when it gets over 115 they hide alot minimum 110 is fine. To adjust the temp on cool side if you're using infared basking bulb you can get a e26 socket extension to Lower the bulb to make the basking spot warm quicker and easier which will cause the cool side of enclosure to drop in temperature if it is above 190 degrees. I personally recommend foam made backgrounds they have because it insulates the enclosure and keeps your room from getting hot, and if you can I recommend glass doors because uromastyx love to glass surf and they scratch up the plastic type doors. I also recommend putting in a thrive log hide for a second hide not that they will hide in it but it is rough and helps them get off their shed. My basking infared bulbs are about 8 and a half inches from basking platforms in 40in wide enclosures which gives me 90 degree cool side. Mabie this will help someone.
I am planning to get a Uro because it's much easier than beardie to take care of, such as cage size and insect diet. This kid is very eloquent. I hope he will give a deeper insight on Uro in his future video.
Honestly my boyfriend really wanted a beardie, but he's very much someone who loves having something no one else does. I talked him into a uro and he said he doesn't think he'd have been as happy with a bearded now! Lil guy loves the bf so much and will crawl directly onto our hands. I'd definitely get another ornate uro in the future
Moji, my red geyri, licks me any time i get close:) was wc but i didnt know at the time. Hes tamed up a ton! Chases his veggies when i hold em,cuddles up into my hoodie pockets and sits on my head. Also loves to try and freefall off of my back😳 hes dangerous
