Great Video to compare different portable projectors within 20 min. Definitely a great video to support making selection. Just got my 1st portable projector BENQ GV30, very easy to project on ceiling to watch movie with kids and came with great sound when lying on the bed. One comment about this video, actually GV30 can support airplay, all you need to do is to click wireless projection app for one time before you can wireless projection from iphone.

Thanks again. My daughter paints murals and the cheapest projector would make a great surprise gift. I would never have thought to use it as a art tool. Thanks
This is the best review video I have honestly ever seen, and I've been around since the cnet days. Honestly amazing quality review, thank you so much, your data is superb
Thank you for your research:) It was really appreciated. I just ordered the Ezcast Beam J2 for art. I look forward to it. I’ve tried and returned 4 other projectors before I found your video. I have high hopes for this one. Thank you again. You are incredible.
One major use case I think is important: the format and possibility of mounting it near bed head to project onto ceiling, so you can watch a movie in bed! Noise is very important in this case as it’s right by your ear (or perhaps lower down if there is a gap between the head of the bed and the wall!)
Great video overall. However one thing I'd say you should include in the videos for portable projectors is the distance to make a 100" screen, and if the device has autofocus and/or automatic keystone correction/what sort of keystone correction it has. After all, for a portable display you really want to be able to easily adjust the projector to fill the screen/area and be square/level.
I can't even imagine the time it takes to make your videos. Not to mention any names, but videoing yourself in different costumes and animating heads explode is nice, but the details in your videos lately is just insane. I'm very amazed with your work. Thank you!
To answer your last question, you aren't being too hard at all. You've saved me A LOT of money with this beautiful review and comparison. Was going to buy the xgimi halo but it's literally twice as expensive as the benq in India right now. Will probably go for the benq since I want portability and will eventually buy one of the other projectors you've suggested for fixed viewing. Thank you so much for this. God bless you Sir.
Here in NY when a microcenter popped up in Westchester we thought it was another fly by night operation, but I goggled it and found it was a popular store all around the country. Now I recommend it to everyone in the area, it really is a great store. It is what radio shack was 40 years ago, it has everything. Oh, and it is the only store that sells apple products cheaper than you can buy them from apple.
THANK YOU! I cancelled my order for Samsung Freestyle order and followed your recommendation to purchase Mars II Pro. Lack of battery life drives hubby crazy. This will be great for RVing
I like it that at the end you tell us "if you already pay 600 dollars and have to plug it in, do you really need a portable projector" yes but the point is, I am looking for 30.000 hours of view and not 3000 and a - silent - projector. That´s the sweet thing we are I think all looking for. So the 600 dollars "real" projectors are I think not silent as the Halo presented here, but offer for sure 4 to 5 times more brightness. Maybe the next video should be "what projector under 1000 dollars is - silent + long longevity + gives you the best image". really appreciate the hard work you put into this.
I use a variety of AAXA projectors when I'm in Africa, since power is unreliable. I pick them up used off eBay. So far, the AAXA P700 is probably my fave. Optoma MP750 is also good. The fact that they're tiny and can be run on a laptop powerbank is a huge plus for me. It's a bonus that I can run videos off a microSD card. (I don't know if you mentioned that these projectors can do microSD cards or run off a laptop powerbank if necessary) I doubt too many people have those considerations/constraints, but .. anyways. Thanks for your detailed videos!!
Not surprising that BenQ is up there in the top 3 because they have years of experience manufacturing multimedia projectors, breaking Epson's monopoly. We had BenQ projectors for use in our school more or less eight years ago alongside Epson ones. Though, ViewSonic, what happened? You were one of the best back in the day when it comes to display technology (IMO). Then again, portability-wise (with all those cables, I'm kind of tired setting up my Acer projector all the time when I hold classes, not to mention bulky), so maybe I'm considering projectors just like the WeMax Dice and the one from Anker--something to match my iPad Pro 11-incher. I'm looking for that "all-in-one-backpack" kind of deal for my classes that is not totally dependent on the power outlet. Thank you very much for the heads-up on all possible choices!
Great video! I looked into projectors last summer and ended up after many trial and error, going with Xgimi Halo. I went from a cheap Vankyo, to a $160 projector, to the Wemax to the Xgimi. The problem is that there’s no big name (until recently) in the market so there’s a not a ton of reliability in these brands.
Thanks so much for putting this together. One thing that you didnt mention was the exact noise in db for each beamer. This would be super interesting. Thanks!
Amazing review. I love that you did a detailed comparison and measured actual ANSI lumens along with comparisions of so many major namebrands. Please review the Nebula Capsule 3!
I'd be interested to see a video on non-portable, plug-in projectors, your scientific methods and obvious familiarity with tech make you an excellent reviewer and source of actually valuable information, thank you
You're videos are so well done and very informative! I'm trying to decide on a good 3D projector that won't break the bank. Would love to see a good video like yours on 3D projectors.
As these are all portable, I think it would be prudent to consider how the batteries can be supplemented. Do they all have AC adapters or can some of them be powered via a USB battery pack?
Yeah, I think you're right with your recommendations. I was expecting the BenQ to take the cake, but if battery life is so bad, then what's the purpose... If you're watching anything under 45 minutes then it'll work as a portable. 🤷🏼♂️
I have owned the Wemax/Formovie Dice for close to a week now. Sadly it has some issues: - It did not detect the wifi or bluetooth units upon first setup. - Auto keystone is hardly _auto_ and I end up doing it manually or by moving the tripod around anyway. - Seems a bit out of focus no matter how I adjust it (could also be due to the screen or source). Slightly better without any keystoning. - The fans are noticeable but there's a piezzoelectric buzzing sound that is more annoying. - Audio distortion/clipping already at 50% volume. - Noticeable audio glitches (tested in several apps). If I'm lucky, this is only network related. - Audio in bluetooth headphones is unsynced to the point that it is unwatchable. Doesn't seem very promising for soundbars. - I wouldn't say that the menus are sluggish but not fast either. - Default image modes are highly oversaturated, particularly red. However, it can be sort of fixed in user mode. - Bloatware... Particularly the audio issues are disappointing, and I will probably check if I can return the projector if I can't find a solution. Finally, a couple of negative points with this class of projectors: The short throw-ratio and upward tilted beam, means that they need to be placed at table level, beside you or in front of you. They are thus less flexible than they seem. Built-in-speakers are fine but will be annoying in the long run if you are forced to sit to one of the sides.
That's one great review with all the technical in depth details.. A big thumps up for the effort that you have put on.. Please give similar review for best 4k projectors.
Now That was a full blown review !!! One thing that might have been good to include would be wattage draw of each as many people who are away camping now have portable solar generators (Li-ion battery pack). Portability of projector & run time not as critical as you use secondary portable external electrical source
I can tell you why someone would un-zoom down to 5 inches. I take a photo of my sketchbook and mirror it to a projector that points straight down onto a canvas so I can reproduce a sketch rapidly for oil painting. It's a much easier option then using grid systems, etc. to reproduce sketches. So what I would be looking for in a projector is a tripod type of mount hole, lighter weight, smaller size, 4 corner keystone and possibly a DLP to have as small an image in focus as possible. It's not an easy task coming up with the right projector for this task.
Have you seen the Pico Genie Impact projectors? I keep looking at them for art but there are only a few review videos which look good, but there aren’t many independent reviews.
I would really love to see a recommendation from you for a short-throw projector with some reasonable amount portability (lightweight and easy to setup anywhere; not battery operated) to use in an expo booth projecting on a close wall/screen or other surface in a relatively bright room. I've watched all your reviews but did not see any clear winner for this particular use case.
I'd say in the image test the Benq just looks better overall and beats the Halo simply for clarity regardless of the contrast... Also, sound "quality" wise, the Halo easily sounds the best with its warmer (mid-bottom end), clearer sound. I'd love to know what you think of the Elfin and compare it to the EF11
A great thorough test of these devices but a tittle too hard on the Xgimi in my opinion. I purchased it almost a year ago for about £475 ($580) at the time. After suffering 3 annoyingly rubbish pocket projectors, this was a massive upgrade and breath of fresh air. I mainly use it for Premiership and Champions League on a 100 inch garden wall in the summer here in Cyprus with power until i got a battery bank. Watched a few films in 3D as well which was really good and 4k films look brilliant despite being downgraded to 1080p, and i load up the Stadia app on it and play about an our of FIFA 22 on the bedroom ceiling before going to sleep. Retro gaming will be next to try out.
I think the XGiMi is great, in fact, I think it was the best projector I tested as far as picture quality and sound. However, I don't know if it's $250 better than the Mars Pro II.
Hi Robert! Besides BenQ GV30, is there any other good projector able to project on the ceiling? I'm not necessarily looking for a portable one. What is the best one? It's even better if it's a budget projector! Thanx from Italy!
My need is for a projector in place of a big TV. No gaming. I am also fine using a battery pack for power. I value good picture quality and sound. This is what I am looking for in a projector.
What about XGIMI Elfin? Overall it's better projector for me and the way I'll use it, but what worries me, is the contrast ratio that is only 1:1000 :( Have you ever used Elfin? Is it something I should be worried about?
I really wish PicoPIx Max got included. I wanna see how bad it can be compared to others and perhaps how good it is in some aspects. I think portable projectors are best for those who never owned full projectors because they are easy to be satisfied. I can''t believe I started with actual pocket projectors with 100-200 lumens :D
I think a use case that is interesting is being able to watch something while away from AC power options... Can any of these be connected to a USB or 12V DC source to extend their use? Say... Tailgating where you have access to a vehicle, in an Anchorage where you've got a large house battery bank. If any can be on DC power that would make them of interest to me 👍
XGimi Halo all the way! Best picture quality and excellent performance. Input lag is reduced significantly in a gaming mode. You can use an external power bank to charge it while watching movies (you need only a small adapter) so basically you can run it infinite time ;) Only strange part in your comparison was the sound quality... I use my Xgimi Halo at about 10-20% of volume otherwise it is too loud in my small room. How is it possible that it was so quiet on your video?
Thank you for your terrific videos! Two missing projector test components that I'm searching for are heat output and text clarity testing. I work in a small space and am looking for a low heat yet large Microsoft Word text option to utilize as I switch from sitting at a desk to walking on a treadmill setup. Perhaps a dedicated video on business use cases? Much appreciate what you do!
Great review, instant sub ! Do you know whatever happened to the puppy cube touch projector. I thought that was so innovative but got pulled from the market
Just recommended this video to a lady from church who was asking about my pico projector. After doing so, I realized my projector doesn’t really compare to the projectors shown here. Sure they are all “portable”, but from what I can tell my pico is much smaller than these projectors. (Maybe it’s just an illusion from not seeing them in person). They projectors reviewed here are undoubtedly much better than mine which has no smarts, is only 720p, and has an almost unusable speaker. But mine is easy to throw in a laptop bag and plenty bright (advertised 400 lumens) to use for video in a brightly lit room so long as you keep the screen below maybe 40 inches. I have the Miroir M220 (I think they made a smart version at mine time which I wish I would have sprung for) and I paid ≈250 for it on eBay. It does tend to have a heavy green cast during dark scenes but looks great with brightly lit content - links switch games, and that’s always using it directly in a wall or sheet (I have a “real” projector for my screen). Anyway- all that to say I’d love to see another video comparing pico projectors. I know it’s a big ask and takes a lot of capital and time but I just figured I’d express the interest if you hadn’t thought of it. Or maybe these projectors are smaller than they look onscreen and compare better than I was thinking. I know I’ve seen the nebula once and it was easily 4x bigger than mine if now more. Thanks again for all the great content! You have quickly become one of my favorite diy/ smart home / tech channels.
Very good comparison, but will all the work you put in, would have been nice to see you include resolution for each in your sum up and final recommendations, especially since some of these top out at 480p - yikes!

Very good job. In the market for a projector. Good review.

I'm so happy Samsung tried to play people because I've been trying to figure out what projector to get and all of that led me to you.

I didn’t know Micro Center was still around. No joke. I always enjoyed going through there.
I loved this. Please do a comparison video on home projectors ($500-$1000) next!
You deserve way more viewers! Great great work on this one.
These head to heads are great. I'd also love to see a $700-1500 even 2k range for a true home theater setup...
The effort you put into these matchups is amazing, subscribed and much respect.
First time i comment a review video! spent an hour going through crappy videos and now i finally found this one. Thank you.

Hey! I know it’s been a while but how was your experience with the ezcast beam?
Curious also about the art use? Have you seen the Pico Genie projectors?

Noise is very important in this case as it’s right by your ear (or perhaps lower down if there is a gap between the head of the bed and the wall!)

After all, for a portable display you really want to be able to easily adjust the projector to fill the screen/area and be square/level.
I'd agree on the levelling but personally I don't necessarily want a projector to fill a wall
that's less important because lens throw is a spec that projector companies don't lie bout

To answer your last question, you aren't being too hard at all. You've saved me A LOT of money with this beautiful review and comparison. Wow mate, such a well researched/produced video. Literally couldn't find anything nearly close to your analysis elsewhere. Keep up the great work!
Hi! Just wanted to say that this study was most pertinent in helping me decide on a projector to purchase. Tks so much for doing this.
Glad to hear it!

Depending on how big a screen you need and how bright it needs to be the EZCast J2 sounds perfect for you.
I have the anker nebula solar portable. 1080p 400 ANSI lumen. Been loving it for 2 years now.
Use case is for digital nomads who change homes a lot and usually don’t have TVs. I can also move these and use them as a second monitor
Great job again I’m still on the fence on what to buy Do a lot of camping So I’d take a power pack too ! Thanks 👍🇨🇦
You are so awesome thank you for this extremely well tested and educated review !
thanks for putting in the work for this video. It's greatly appreciated.
Excellent video again. Just the info I was looking for.
I wouldnt mind trying that Mars Pro. Howabout that new laser one they have released recently ?
One of the best review i have ever watched. Good job
This is the best review video I have ever watched! Thank you!
Yes in a room without speakers and where you want to have only a cable running to your projector, the top of the range XGIMI halo will be great
Amazing review!! Probably the best video review I have ever seen.
Great comparison, assessment, conclusions and recommendations. Super dense information, thanks a lot😁🤙
Thanks!
Subscribed. Great info. Will be visiting the chart to review to make a decision on a projector purchase.
Tons of work here! You deserve more views! Keep going!
Hi Robert! Besides BenQ GV30, is there any other good projector able to project on the ceiling? I'm not necessarily looking for a portable one. What is the best one? It's even better if it's a budget projector! Thanx from Italy!
I am having a hard time with using BenQ with Laptop for PowerPoint presentations . Can you do a video?
This guy is mad, I love that!
I have a moire and I love it. But I’m glad there are other options out there. Mine had a green cast in dark scenes.
My need is for a projector in place of a big TV. No gaming. I am also fine using a battery pack for power. I value good picture quality and sound. This is what I am looking for in a projector.
What about XGIMI Elfin? Overall it's better projector for me and the way I'll use it, but what worries me, is the contrast ratio that is only 1:1000 :(
Have you ever used Elfin? Is it something I should be worried about?
Amazing! Saved tons of effort on my side. Thank you!
Your my review guy. Always informative and concise
If any can be on DC power that would make them of interest to me 👍
Love this comparison style
Xgimi Halo all the way! Great brightness, the best picture quality and excellent app compatibility.
Actually, I think the Halo+ is worth every penny for the upgraded brightness and auto zoom and keystone.
Is this Projector quiet?
reeeeeeeally great review! informative, well made and short cut. Thanks!
Amazing comparison, great work. Thank you
Thanks for the detailed review of projectors.
Did you ever covered Yaber L2s in your review?
wow!!! this is awesome content man! thank you!
XGimi Halo all the way! Best picture quality and excellent performance. Input lag is reduced significantly in a gaming mode. You can use an external power bank to charge it while watching movies (you need only a small adapter) so basically you can run it infinite time ;)
Only strange part in your comparison was the sound quality... I use my Xgimi Halo at about 10-20% of volume otherwise it is too loud in my small room. How is it possible that it was so quiet on your video?
Also have the halo and love the sound from it.
How can you charge it from an external power bank? (As its DC plug, is there a specific adapter?)
What would be best for a gaming device? I'd probably only use it after work or on the weekends.
