  • Black Magic Woman by Fleetwood Mac. How to play lead guitar parts over verses 1 and 2. Learn to play in the great blues style of Peter Green

    Video script:
Peter Green is one of the best blues lead guitar players to emulate for those starting out learning lead guitar. His great secret was to play very simple licks, but with exquisite feel and timing.
So let's look at each lick that he played over the first couple of verses of the original Fleetwood Mac recording of this song. Over the intro we have the high sounding chord. If you are doing this in a band there's no harm in both rhythm and lead guitar playing this together.
Then at the end of the first line of vocals he plays this little run...at slow tempo... Then at the end of the third line he plays this little lick... slowed down...
This is best practiced nice and slow and deliberate to begin with to get the sequence of technique right and nail the timing. Then by repeatedly listening to the original lick and immediately trying to copy it you will gradually home in on the exact way of playing it.
At the end of the first verse there's a lead lick played, I think by the rhythm guitar. It goes something like this...at half tempo... But if you take that on as lead guitarist you may struggle to get back in time to the intro chord as this is quite a long way for your fretting hand to travel in almost no time at all.
Here's an alternative version of the same basic idea, but played an octave higher. Up to you which one of those you opt for.
At the end of the first line of the second verse he plays this lick ...at half tempo... And he plays this nice simple follow-up at the end of the next line
which I think he uses a touch of palm muting on.
He then adds this three-note Dm chord at the start of the next bar.
Followed by this little hammer-on from fret 10 to 13 on the second string.
And finally this little run at the end of the line.
Finally, here's a quick of me playing all these licks along with the record so you can see and hear how they all fit in.
I 'll leave you to work on those licks and next week we'll take a look at the solo from this song.

Fantastic lesson, I enjoyed the way you broke down all the parts and explained in great detail. Very professional.

I personally like your teaching style and I accept it for what it is, helpful and well intentioned.I have been a big fan of the early Mac for 50 years now. And I attempt to emulate Peter's style and tone. Seen him live often, he didn't always play the same notes. Like Paul Kossof! Peter also shared honours with Danny and Jeremy. So there is no one definitive recording or version. In my humble opinion.** (** Disclaimer for the overly pious and judgemental element out there)
