    Great idea here, Hiram. I get a lot of questions about a simmer ring for this stove, too. So I appreciate you putting your stove knowledge to work and coming up with a very easy solution. Thanks again.

    Hello Hiram, another great video, and thanks for the idea, I made the ring with 1/4 and I actually forgot to drill the holes in the bottom of it, until just now watching your video again and I see now I forgot them, but here are my results without the holes in the simmer ring, I used the same Pumpkin can, boil time was 18 minutes 25 seconds, runout time was 35 minutes 15 seconds, and it was a rolling boil at 18:25 so it worked much better without the holes in the simmer ring, maybe try a video with that, next I'm going to do the test with one cut at 1/8 and no holes, thanks again for the idea, love your videos.

    i would like to verify that this simmer ring idea of yours does work. i made one.. 1/2" from top, 3 paper punch holes at bottom all using the same 15oz can you used. the simmer ring allowed me to cook bac & eggs in an 8" cast iron skillet on the FF stove (which was desperately needed). very much appriation for you and many thanks as well my friend, martina

    Just a couple of ideas that may have a similar effect:
    Reduce the height of the inner can (you proved it changed the efficiency of the stove)
    A short simmer ring with some some parts folded in right on top of the felt to reduce the flame from 360 degrees around to 4 arcs of a circle... I think this may work great.

      +240weatherby made my ring 1/4 cut down and I forgot to add the holes in it, it boiled in just over 18mins, and burned out in just over 35, so try it without the holes cut in the Simmer Ring, I did it by accident and glad I did. I have yet to test it cut to 1/8 or any other size yet.

    An observation: An incremental difference in flame size might be had if incrementally different heights of simmer rings were tried
    WITHOUT vent holes. A Trangia simmer ring does not provide air while limiting the flame. Thanks for sharing your experiments,

    Keep up the great work, Hi Max, & I too enjoy watching Hiram boil water!!!! LOL

    Hiram! I just compared an Arizona Tea 23.5 oz Aluminum Can to a 15 oz tin can. Same diameter.... I'm going to try and create a lighter version of the simmer ring and see how it fares.... Thanks for your videos.

    I was just wondering this as I finally field tested the cf stove today making a Knorrs rice curry that had a 7 minutes of simmer after bringing water to a boil. Had to refuel part way through after starting with 1 oz of fuel. Thanks.

    When I bought my ff stove from a site on utube it came with a simmer ring. What I've been doing is use the stove to start the boil, lift the pot and drop simmer ring over the stove then continue to simmer my meal. Seems like the average time comes out to about 15 minutes.

    As you know that is my go to stove as I won't buy an alcohol stove. I made a simmer ring out of a quarter inch bigger can (than the tomato can) about half an inch high and inverted it over the tomato can. That really cut down the flame well. I did one test not nearly as scientific as you but it took far longer to boil and works very similarly to the Trangia simmer ring. Haven't needed to use it yet due to the burn ban all summer but I hope to try it out soon. Just providing my solution. Yours is probably better. Thanks!

    Notice the air holes near the bottom of the simmer ring. They allow air in, so you don't snuff the flame.

    I made one by using a coke can and cutting it with a similar pattern like zelph's simmer ring and i can have about 30 minutes of runout. You should try that!

      +Eric Cho Also, by doing it this way the simmer ring will automatically snap around the fancee feast stove due to its natural bend

    I've done a similar thing in the past by making a ring with carbon felt and holding it together with a medical bandage clip. Never did any time tests but it seemed to cut the flame down pretty well.

    Interesting test. Interesting variable with that 1/4" version. As best I can see, seems that part of that variable is the number of holes punched in the bottom of the "simmer" rings. Appears that air flow at both bottom & top was reduced of the 1/8". Suspect more air flow from bottom & 1/4" gap at top simply allowed better burn rate that also concentrated heat on bottom of the pot. ........ Just musing over what I saw, FWIW. As always, thanks for doing these tests.

    Hi Hiram,
    Have you done any tests with fewer (or smaller) air holes in the simmer ring?
    I'm wondering if cutting down the airflow would slow down the burn.

    • @Rspenesmit
      @Rspenesmit 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Jim Wygralak i made one cut down to 1/4 inches, but I forgot to put the holes in it, it boiled at 18mins 25secs, and runout time was 35mins 15secs, so by accident I found an improved design, I still plan to test it out cut at 1/8 inches with no holes in it to see if that improves it or not as good.
      I am making a series of vids based on the best Stoves, accessories and anything related to them, so check them out, thanks.

    If you reduce the numbers of holes to 2 or smaller diameter on the Simmer-ring, the effect of reducing the flame would be stronger. Thanks

    It would be easy to make an adjustable version ,by using a telescoping outer ring ,with a notched ramp index ,for varying,the height. Similar to a pre load adjuster on a motorcycle shock,

    • @fabiogarcia1431
      @fabiogarcia1431 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or a system using threads (like a screw) to adjust the height precisely. It is more time demanding to build, though.

    im no expert on these things but the only way to reduce heat to simmer is to reduce the number and size of the burning ports.
    i just made a cat food stove and its great for boiling.
    for a simmer stove i prefer a penny stove with 4 jets only.
    i posted that on hammock forums.
    i got 54 mins of burn time but i dont think it would get a boil.

    you need to try with out the holes in the bottom of your simmer ring try cutting grooves in the top, you need to starve the flame of oxygen and the grooves in the top works

    • @comfortouch
      @comfortouch 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Fred Schwartzkopf He does not need to cut grooves in the top of the simmer ring, because there is a, 1/8" clearance. It isn't a pot stand! He is trying to cut down on the oxygen to slow the burn rate. Pretty sure you missed the entire point of the video.

    I own about 31 alcohol stoves... in reality alcohol stoves are not very practical on the trail...because they burn slow....and can take a long time to boil 2 cups of water. You can't see the flame during the day...if you are using a Mini bull design, remote alcohol stove you can run them over with alcohol and not even know it...because it is very hard to see the flame burn during daylight. . .I love my wood burning stoves for backpacking....They pack down small, you don't have to carry the weight of fuel....and you can see the flame at anytime of the day or night...and a wood burning stove lets you have a small fire at night without needing to build a camp fire...

    that kind of stove, WHY ?

  • @ridebks
    @ridebks 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Or just make a shorter pot stand to switch out for simmering! Or add water to the alcohol!

    • @comfortouch
      @comfortouch 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ridebks How do you propose to pull out a flaming and burning-hot pot stand, to replace it with another? Adding water to the alcohol will mess up the stove, BAD idea.

    • @ridebks
      @ridebks 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      comfortouch...I'm not saying to switch it out while on fire...start out with a shorter stand for simmering...cooking rice etc...the closer the pot is to the flame, the lower the flame! Also, tests have been run and videos have been made with adding water to the alcohol which lowers the flame to a simmer and does absolutely nothing to the stove! I do it all the time, with this stove and also with pressurized stoves! Do a little digging, I'm sure you'll find some info!

    I don't think Anyone will believe what I'm going to tell You about a simmer ring for the fancy feast stove . . . I saw a TH-cam
    video of one that made the stove burn for over thirty minutes one time,
    and over forty minutes the next time ! In fact the Man showing the video looked like He got tired of waiting for it to burn out & snuffed it out !?
    I don't know if I can spell
    His Name correctly , but I'll try... Gray Wanderer .
    Maybe You can find His video on TH-cam & see for Yourself !
    EDIT :
    I found that video :
    The Man's Name is
    Wandering Graybeard .
    The name of the video is :
    alcohol stove tests with different simmer rings
