    Great idea. I love these stoves. They are light weight and care free. I have built several of them over the last few days. The simmer ring will give me more options. Thanks for sharing this idea. Time to head out and pick up some more fancy feast cans...lol

    Make a ring of 10 ga copper wire the diameter of the carbon felt used along the top between the two cans. Leave a little handle to grab to remove if desired.
    That cuts the surface burn area in about 1/2-ish.
    If 10 ga is too wide then drop down to 12 ga.
    Should provide the same effect with less work/materials.

    Thank you! With this simmer ring, the fancy feast stove with carbon felt and your simmer ring, I have the complete stove needed to my kind of use.
    The problem with these stoves is that you end up with so many, - trying, failing, having fun.... I have carbon felt for 100 more stoves.... and my wife thinks I have ended up as a geek... I think it's time to put it to the use it's meant for. Cheers.

      +Ritz I hear you. Such is the life of the Stovie. I wish I could say I have used my many stove creations more when I'm actually camping, as opposed to in my garage tinkering with them. But that would not be the truth.
      The nice thing is that I finally found a design that I think is about as good as it gets. So now it's time to use it in the woods like you said!
      Cheers.

    this morn in the house (I have cement floored metal building - it's safe for this) I used the 1/2 capacity FF stove (1oz. fuel) with an 8" cast iron skillet cooking bac & eggs. w/o using any simmer ring the temp is so hot you could forget cooking in a thin aluminum skillet (would burn-up). anyway, the cast iron 8" skillet will work on the 1/2 capacity FF stove for bac n' eggs but it gets pretty darn hot there at the end of cooking. what I did is butter the skillet and cook the egg while also cooking the bac at the same time in order to absorb the high heat as much as possible. worked ok, but even still close to too hot to do it all. I found that the Alocs (cheap trangia knock-off burner) burns at a much less high temp than the trangia. I cook bac and eggs on the alocs pot stand (similar to the trangia mini pot stand) with a 5" square lodge brand iron skillet while using the alocs burner w/o a simmer ring and that cooks just a perfect temp without ever using the simmer ring. I saw a video where hiram threw-out the alocs burner as if it were junk, but I don't think so because it's lower temp burning allows for pretty good cooking temps while using the alocs pot stand and that whole set up cost only $10.50USD total (shipping and all) directly from china on Ebay. depends on what you're doing as to what you wanna carry of course. another thing: for the trangia I bought 2 of the Mojo pot stands on Ebay and I really do seriously like those. that's why I bought a 2nd one. still though, from when I'm going minimalist no stove beats the 1/2 capacity FF. IMO. just sharing and thanks CC, martina

    yes, this is very helpful, thank you. i made 2 simmer rings... the 1st is identical to yours (8-holes, i used a paper hole puncher). the 2nd simmer ring i made is identical to yours, but has 6 paper hole puncher holes. both simmer rings are very effective. the 8 hole simmer ring throttles the stove down quite a bit and does so exactly as your video shows. the 6 hole simmer ring really throttles the stove down for a desired skillet cooking temperature (which i wanted). i waited for better minds than mine (like yours and hiram's) to come up with something and both of you have! 1stly, only the most courteous respect for hiram in the whole world (i just love hiram), but all honesty said your simmer ring here in this video not only is the better, but i think is the permanent SOLUTION. your simmer ring design WORKS and it works very very well IMO. the following are my findings... the 8 hole simmer ring throttles down the stove quite a bit for slower boiling or for much lesser desired temps. the 6 hole simmer ring allows for a desired skillet cooking temp such as bac n' eggs. i cooked and ate several meals using both simmer rings and this also is what i can offer to pass along, if interested... heat your skillet to hot on high w/o any simmer rings first. then, if cooking with an 8" or 10" skillet pull the skillet off and install the 6 hole simmer ring and resume skillet cooking. using the 6 hole simmer ring my cooking temp was stabilized for the duration of cooking bac n' fried eggs perectly (not too hot / not too cold). if you are going to use a simmer ring i would 1stly get the pot or skillet very hot before installing the simmer ring (i think this is key to the stove operating correctly using either simmer ring). i think what's left now for me to finish the stove is that i would like to locate and buy the plastic flip-top fuel bottle that coloradocamper used in his other video (stores inside of the stove) and then also i would like to find a metal container with a lid that the fuel bottle and nesting stove will fit into well. i think i would use the can part of the container as a snuffer for the stove if i can find a container like this? if anyone has any ideas please let me know? many many kind thank you's to coloradocamper... we love you!

    • @ColoradoCamper
      @ColoradoCamper  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Martina Dejaquiz Thanks again for the kind words, and thank you for sharing your testing results here. Your tests sound exactly right to me. I think my 8-hole simmer ring would be slightly too hot for bacon and fried eggs, so I'm not surprised that your 6-hole model works best for that. I also agree that the best method for use would be to heat the pan up with the stove at full power, then place the simmer ring on.
      The plastic fuel bottle you are referring to is a 4oz Nalgene bottle. I purchased it at REI. As for the metal container, I am not sure, but maybe a campbell's soup can? No lid though, unless you used a side-cutting can opener like Hiram often uses.

    Nice Video thanks, have you checked the total burn time yet on this simmer ring, and also checked to see if an when it boils, I just completed a test on it myself tonight after making it just like yours, it Boiled 2 Cups of Water in 21 minutes 15 seconds, and then it burned out at 27 minutes 15 seconds, so this simmer ring really adds some cooking time and will most likely bake, but that's my next test, I did also try Hiram's simmer ring which is a bit larger can cut to fit over the entire fancy feast stove, and cut just a little below the top, it in 18 minutes 25 seconds and burned out in 35 minutes 15 seconds, so I'm going to do some modifications to both rings and see if I can get any more overall burn time from them. thanks again for this simmer ring idea.

      +ColoradoCamper I went back to comment last night and post my results for Hirams Simmer ring I made and I realized my on my ring made like his, I had forgotten the air holes on the bottom of it, but I got about 10 more minutes from my simmer ring than he did, so I let him know that, so i will make one and test it with the holes to make sure mine lasts longer without them, also I had made his ring at 1/8 inch down from the top of the stove, next I will try 1/4 and see how that does, also I want to try your ring with 8 holes half the size that it has, and then try 16 even smaller and compare all those results, I will post here when I do and let you know. I also got 35 minutes out of my Trangia stove with the simmer ring half open, but it never boiled,
      I am also working on What I call the Ultimate Baking/Cooking kit at the best price I can put it together for, once I get all the pieces to it I will post that info to let others know also, thanks again.

      +Bowlin01 I just completed my 1st video on my series of short vids I've planned on the best or Ultimate Cooking system, this will include my 1st vid on my Imusa grease pot and best mods for it, I will do more on the best Alcohol stoves, best windscreens, pot stands, best pots and all accessories for them, and it will include simmer ring tests, as for the simmer ring, I really lke this one, but Hiram came up with one, that's much bigger and just fits over the Fancy Feast stove, but increased the cook time and burnout time on 1 ounce of fuel by another 10 mins, and also using a Vienna Sausage can instead of a cat can there is no cutting, only punching the 4 holes needed for the tomato paste can, and if fits down inside the vienna sausage can without cutting it down, I have to complete my tests on which is best, but Hirams simmer ring lasts makes the burn last longer, but it's also bigger and weighs more, I like both, I just put up my 1st video and will be doing Pot stands next.

    so I made one of these last night, I had used smaller holes n was just a bit shorter than your ring, but worked crazy amazing!! it did not come out the holes, but still had a light simmer for ever! I had put it on after got a good roll of fire going. It did seem to work OK just didn't come out the holes. However i had my small.cup identical the gsi cup. I stopped after 30 mins. took the ring off and the stove burned for 5 or 6 minutes after It took off.

      +ColoradoCamper I am thinking one ounce. I am going to try things at work tonight again and will try some dry baking, and will let you know. the way I made it isn't the most efficient. I had gotten a bag of scraps, from minibull design and packed it with the smaller scraps, it worked n was more for testing purposes, just to see how it worked in comparison to my other stove, and worked amazingly. even with having the carbon felt the way I did.

    I gave it a rough go today. Started with four equally spread small holes half way up the ring. Stove went out once the pot was on. Then I made the four holes 1/8 inch. Same result. Then I put four 1/8 inch holes between each of the previous holes but lower down on the ring. Stove burned a little but still went out.
    I used my dry bake stove to boil 2 cups of water. I figure if I can get the Fancy Feast with the simmer ring to boil 2 cups in a similar time frame, it would work for dry baking.

    • @ColoradoCamper
      @ColoradoCamper  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +North Country Outdoor Guys One thing I noticed with testing mine is that you have to let the simmer ring heat up once you put it on the stove. It helps to give it 10-20 seconds to get nice and hot so the stove will still be pumping out plenty of vapors to burn.
      Also I placed my holes as far down as possible so that they would be close to the carbon felt, which is the source of the fuel vapors. I hope that helps improve your results.

    I just tried making the simmer ring, with 4 holes. The flame didn't seem to be coming out...except maybe from one hole. I put it out and then punched four more holes in it, and tried it again. Now it looks just like your ring in the video. So, I'm not sure if it is because it needed the 8 holes, or if I just didn't let it warm up enough the first time. BTW, what size holes do you have punched in? 1/4 inch or 1/8 inch?

    • @ColoradoCamper
      @ColoradoCamper  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe I used 1/8 inch holes, and there are eight of them. I have noticed that it needs to get nice and hot before you put a pot on top, otherwise the flames won't come out of the holes.

    • @Rspenesmit
      @Rspenesmit ปีที่แล้ว

      I did 6 holes and it worked great and had less heat which allowed me to cook eggs, bacon & other things without burning the 8 holes burned those so 6 was perfect for myself and the way I like to cook and bake, 4 holes as you said did not work on mine either, 6 seems to be the perfect longer frying slightly lower temp and longer baking times to use for.

    HI, I have been using this simmer ring along with another I made from Hiram's design both with excellent results, I made one for someone else, and they contacted me today and said, that this ring melted on them very quickly, they said it may not have been pressed all the way down on the stove, but that it melted quickly, I'm still pretty baffled by this as I've used my Simmer ring many times with no issues, so tomro, I plan to do some heat tests on the Simmer Ring to see if and when and how long it may take to cause it to melt if it does, I was shocked when they told me this.

    • @ColoradoCamper
      @ColoradoCamper  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Rspene smit I haven't used mine at all since making this video, but am a bit baffled too. It doesn't seem like this stove burns hot enough to melt aluminum, but without seeing exactly how they built their stove and simmer ring, it's hard to know.

    Cool~ how do u carry your FF stove? Do u have a container for your stove? I saw That Hiram has a perfect fit size plastic container put his FF stove... How about you? I'm trying to build a UL cook kit which it contains FF, your beer can WS, and small bottled of fuel nests within my snowpeak 700. Hoping to find me a container for FF so that it won't stink up my SP 700. Also I found out that spam spread can are same size as the FF... I just need to get some carbon felt for my dyi any recommendation on the CF? Thanks mate

    • @ColoradoCamper
      @ColoradoCamper  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +baseballman74 For carbon felt, I bought mine at Home Depot. It's an Oatley flame protector sold in the plumbing department.
      I don't have a container for my stove and so far I haven't noticed it stinking up my pot. But I should probably slip it into a plastic sandwich bag to be safe. What I don't like about a container is that it prevents the fuel bottle from nesting inside the stove.
      My UL cook kit is a 700ml pot with my beer can windscreen, the stove, a fuel bottle nested in the stove, and a bandana stuffed in the top (as a dish rag and also to prevent it from rattling around).

    There is such an easy solution to simmering.
    Go back to four sided oven box stove and use a small Sterno.
    or
    Small Sterno with an "X" stand off.
    The use for the Fancy Feast alcohol stove was simplicity and fast water boil,
    during backpacking to reconstitute freeze dry trail food
    Fancy feast was never designed for a 32 OZ can to be carried in a back pack
    for simmering.
    We love fancy feast just like it is. Go redesign your own 32 0Z can simmering alcohol stove.
    Fancy Feast man today tomorrow and forever.
    This message was sent to be laughed at in good humor.

      +Bill Rundell not all of us are back packers but yak packers. So a 32oz. can is nothing, as my yak carries it not me! :P

    is it safe to cook and eat from the can? do they line the can with anything?

    • @ColoradoCamper
      @ColoradoCamper  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +korling99 The cans do have some sort of liner. Canned goods go through a heated sterilization process, which is why they have long shelf lives. So the liners are meant to take some amount of heat. That said, I cannot say if cooking in the can is 100% safe or not, that's beyond my knowledge.

    what if you cut off the rim on the simmer ring and fit it to the outside of the wick? That would seem more stable.

      Then it will make it weaker where the ring adds strength.

    Hi, thanks for a very interesting video. I have recently made a Fancee Feast stove and was wondering about a simmer ring so found your video very interesting. However, I then watched another YT video from the guy at ZelphStoves (John, I think) who said that putting a simmer ring on a Fancee Feast stove was pointless. i.e. It actually doesn't work, the fuel consumption is as fast as without the simmer ring and boil times etc are unaffected. I wonder could you do a timed comparison boil (one with simmer ring and one without) using the same amount of water and fuel to see the results and see whether the simmer ring is actually 'calming things down' (i.e. lower heat/ slower burn)? Many Thanks Steve

      +Bowlin01 See the comment on this video by Rspene smit, who says this simmer ring boiled 2 cups of water in 21 minutes 15 seconds. Without the simmer ring, this stove boils 2 cups in 6 minutes or so. So I think simmer rings, or at least this style of simmer ring, definitely affect the fuel burn rate and heat output of a Fancy Feast stove.

      +ColoradoCamper excellent, many thanks for pointing me to that information. I shall make a simmer ring this evening and try it out tomorrow. Cheers Steve

    How tall is your tomatoes can over the fancy feast? Tried your simmer ring and mine didn't work well. However my tomatoes can is 1" taller than my cat can. Also what size holes and how many.
    My goal is to boil then simmer for ten minutes like the many box meals require.

    • @ColoradoCamper
      @ColoradoCamper  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      My tomato paste can is about 3/4" taller than the cat food can. I believe I used a 1/8" drill bit and drilled 8 holes.
      I recall that you need to get the stove nice and hot and place the ring on slowly to get it to work. That shouldn't be an issue if you intend to boil first and then simmer later.

    I wonder if the heat output is low enough to dry bake?

    • @ColoradoCamper
      @ColoradoCamper  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +North Country Outdoor Guys As I have it now, I think it would be a little too much heat for baking. But if I cut the number of holes down, I bet it could be dialed in for baking.

      I rough-cut it with an old pocket knife, then made the final cut with scissors.

    How do u snuff out the stove when cooking is done?

    • @ColoradoCamper
      @ColoradoCamper  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      For this stove, I measure out how much fuel I need and burn it completely out. You can snuff it with a can that will fit over it, but you can't recover the fuel that's soaked into the wick. Best option is to fill what you need, then burn it all the way out.

    how much alcohol did you put in the stove. even even I put an ounce in it will not light the carbon fiber so I end up having to add more fuel. just wondering as it is not rocket science, lol.

    • @ColoradoCamper
      @ColoradoCamper  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Tim Barton Mine will easily light the carbon felt if I have 1/2oz or more fuel in it. Sometimes I have to wait a few seconds for the fuel to soak up through the felt though.

    You might like to check out a new design I've posted with internal and external flame jets. It works best with ethanol, heats from the moment it's lit, doesn't need a pot stand and allows easy retrieval of unburnt fuel for later use. It also works well with charcoal

    I think the test of a true simmer is if you can cook rice.

    • @ColoradoCamper
      @ColoradoCamper  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +spectre9801 That would be a good test. I was also considering cooking a pancake, but I think rice would indeed be the ultimate long-duration simmer test.
