There are always time in life when we will need the help of other, but we should strive to be able to do everything for ourselves. Example, you don't have to change your own oil, but you should know how to do it. Anytime you are dependent on others is a point of weakness, but that also doesn't mean you should have others in your life. Be strong, but be part of a community/family. I might not work on my own car, but when there is a problem, I learn about it and learn how to fix it, even if I have someone else do the work in the end. So many people are so quick to just pay someone else to do the work and don't use it as a learning experience. When I help people with their computers, I try to explain the problem to them. Most the time they don't want to hear it. They act like computers are to hard to learn, because they've been told so many times buy companies that computers are hard to use, that's why you need our software, we make it easy. When really they are just making you dependent on them.
"They act like computers are to hard to learn" the amount of times I've said something relatively simple about using a computer to someone, and they say something like "oh that's too complex for me" effectively sticking their fingers in their ears and going lalala. I don't understand why people refuse to learn like that, I presume it's just "that sounds difficult" and "difficult things require energy" and "I don't want to expend energy, therefore I wont engage". But that's going to be a terrible way to live your life. Similar to Luke's independence based decision making. When I've thought about doing something, and my brain just wants me to not do it, I have to think, that is my brain avoiding using energy, but I don't need to worry about energy, I'm not a hunter-gatherer, therefore use the energy and do the thing.
But the real devil is in the details. You have no choice but to pick your battles; you cannot really be a uniform generalist and also be valuably competent at anything in particular. There are simply too many things to invest just a little bit of yourself into. This is the other extreme that many people take, and it is equally silly. No, computers are not hard to learn, but really nothing at all is hard to do or learn if you have put no priorities on your time or resources.

True, no one is truly independent. And it's not like a "highly industrialized capitalistic" society doesn't promote hyper independence, because it certainly does. Also, not everyone can just run off and live in the woods, become a hermit, still use tools produced by industrial society. Even in a rural, woodland environment, people still rely on government organizations and programs such as schooling, policing, the fire department and so on. It's ridiculous that people fantasize about running off into the woods, rather than to try and improve their own community.

What made me have a realization was when my 12th grade english teacher said to the class, when you have a car you become dependent on it, like a slave. You have to pay for the gas, repairs, insurance and other things. Same thing is with a lot of things we don't think that we're dependent on. More technology we have the more we become dependent on it. In the movie matrix one of the characters said the zion relied on machines to live.
I started cooking less than a year ago, not only to save money but also maintain a routine for my sanity. It’s one of the more valuable skills amid the halt of society.

I think we need to become more resilient as communities, not just as individuals. That philosophy would probably work for everyone. When you handle things like food, or political decisions, or less used things like tools in groups of no more than a few dozen, you combine efficiency and social interaction with WAY more independence than corporations give us.
I finally understand, English opened the world for me, after learning it and mastering it at a young age I was able to learn and experience so much more of the world. My physical activity as a child let me stay fit and healthy with a good love for outdoors, every little thing you do now will have an effect later, and if you learn more and get more xp you will be able to get even more in the future
Luke! I have a similar story, I’m a 27 yr old married father of 2 boys, and in March this year I quit my pretty good job outright to start a service based business in my ABSOLUTE resentment of the system and my place in it, long story short. Basically I’m doing a trade and investing in things like wood heating and raising chickens to get anti-fragile. Obviously that’s not the end in itself, but these steps I’ve taken have been like jumping out of a boat into cool water. It’s scary but absolutely freeing. I feel very alive. I thank God for His provision, and the future non-indoctrination of my kids lol
literally everything you said is how I live my life. I have 10 acres in Texas, built my own house, have a good small community of neighbors, animals, and yes I have multiple Linux box's.
I disagree to an extent with the "Have less friends" statement, you should have better quality friends, and the more quality friends the better. What you should be having less of are the low quality acquaintances that don't bring anything to your life, those are the people I think you are reffering to.
his heuristic has its merits but so does having community. Young people, especially young guys have the natural advantage of being able to "lone wolf" it, but in the long run it's optimal to balance independence with community (friends, family, church, local organizations, etc. at a base level). I think this is true whether you live in a big city or in Luke Smith's little town.
@@P3rformula If you live in a big city, chances are you're surrounded by parasites who would be both unwilling and unable to bring anything to the table. Pfff community, what is that - the government gradually replaced my community with people who don't even speak English in the home.
@@SamTheEnglishTeacher - do you agree that there needs to be a balance between community and independence/self-reliance in one's life? Bought first home in December. Already got several months of home grown vegetables preserved and frozen. Heating system broke yesterday, but we have two redundant systems so all is well. Good heuristic ya got there - if all economic activity stops from tomorrow until forever, my family can survive & thrive off homegrown organic veg + wild rabbit, goat & deer... despite me being an IT wagecuck in the day time
I like your point. I am also trying to be more independent. I want to move to a remote place one day but the only thing that worries me is how to make a living in such place.
I agree with many points especially the ones who intersect with the solarpunk and decentralization of society but i would advise people to seek the education formally and informally, and you are right freedom and independence rocks!
I think this shows more about the quality of life, independence is only a path to follow when the crowd has become shit, but if community is amazing then it’s great to be a part of a quality team/unit :)
I keep a file of quotes that I feel are important enough to go back to and reflect on multiple times in the future. I added Luke's bit about making decisions based on how it affects your independence. And while most of my other quotes reflect on the human condition I feel like Luke's statement is incredibly important in acting as a guide on how to keep our internal compasses pointed to true north when we fool ourselves into thinking that life is complicated.
3:57 haha I was always drawn into being independent. I read Frugalwoods and some other books on being (financially) independent. It's interesting to be reading your story and this particular heuristic of yours is very useful. Thanks Luke!
The loquats, limes, figs on my acreage are exploding right now. Wife is making whisky fig jam again this year and we're going to ferment the loquats to make wine. Cheers from the SC coast, keep living as a Freeman. And God bless.
We all got the wrong saying: "Time is money" No!! Truly, money is time. Because the important thing is time, and we earn it only to have more time. If we get money at the expense of time, we are suckers then. Like all who follow the wrong saying "time is money". Also another piece of advice: parents shouldn't sacrifice for their children. Then all their children have to see is a tired miserable father or a vindictive insufferable mother, and all they listen is they should be thankful (for ruining their parents' lives!), and on top of it, that they should prepare to sacrifice for their future children too. Be happy! Then have children and have them share your happiness, not lessen it.
Maybe Luke is the exact representation of satisfaction that persue of money maybe is capable of doing. I mean, for all the rich guy over there, People doesnt need a lamborghini, they only need the basic stuff to live a non "stressful" life.
7:49 people in cities in my experience do not care what others think nearly as much as people in the countryside. When my relatives from the countryside got note that i am an atheist they went nuts. in the City nobody cares about others beliefs. Also communities are not as tightly integrated in your daily life as it is on the countryside. Here in the City I could stay in my appartment for weeks (i am actually doing that right now) and live totally introverted and nobody would care. in rural areas when I did not go outside for a few day (like when I was sick) people immediatly started asking questions. I generally think living in a City is more private.
@@-whackd my relatives that live in other cities did not care. Also me being an atheist apparently was kinda the talk of the town (at least briefly) as the Kids I used to play with when I was little also got note of that. In my experience the sentiment towards things like that is a rural/city-thing however your experience may vary
I realized at a really young age, probably about 10 years old that Id make it a huge goal of mine as an adult to live as independently as possible. I hated living in a suburb where everyone hated themselves and I hated strict schedules. Currently, Im a solo artist writing, recording, and performing my own music and targeting a Southwest US state to live in where I'll be doing tons of gardening, fishing, and hunting. Id like to be as self sufficient as possible. Sure if I want a greasy pizza or some Taco Bell, that'll happen too but nothing feels better than eating something you grew or hunted yourself. We miss out on a lot of good things when you go to the market and just stick your hand out with cash or card. That isnt how it works in nature and we are part of that nature.
Thats a great way to put it: What do you get back from investing in the system vis a vis what you get back from investing in your self. Which is kind of the same interface of a short term vs long term problem, as you explained in the video. I appreciate the opinions, keep them coming.
A couple years ago I was thinking "i wish i was living how Varg (or whoever else does it) lives." Then, as I said, I just make the right choices when they came to me and bam. Easier than I thought.
@@LukeSmithxyz Main problem is how to unchain oneself from wagecucking. Both you and Varg managed to do it by having skills, creativity (yours being able to get revenue from videos) but I'd say lots of us are lacking in that aspect. You cannot be free while having to spend 8 hours on some job everyday
The problem however is that this lifestyle can require owning property, which makes you liable to ever-increasing taxation. There's also no guarantee that our increasingly socialist Western governments will respect your property rights forever. It would take another manufactured crisis for the government to grant itself the "right" to confiscate your property, with the overwhelming democratic approval of the majority, who are urbanites and don't own anything anyways, and never will. I 100% agree that more independence is always good, but I'd rather focus on being location-independent first (ie: earning money remotely). Otherwise, all that infrastructure (property, pension funds, etc) can and will someday be confiscated, and you will lose your independence with it. That's why having [location-independent] is so important.
I used to think "I can't just start learning programming out of the blue, I need to find the best language to start with, I need to find the best tools to use, if I start with python/javascript/java I'll learn the wrong concepts and fixate the wrong ideas in my head" but eventually you learn more low level languages and it doesn't matter, just like it doesn't matter which human language you learn to speak first. Start doing anything at all in the direction of "rural living" and you'll very quickly find an overwhelming amount of knowledge that interests you and shows you new things to learn about. Don't make your starting point be some book someone suggested, that will keep you inside that bubble of ideas and you will likely be discouraged from exploring more on your own during that critical initial phase. Jump right into it and you'll learn so much. tldr just wing it bro like the other commenter said
I definitely agree with the sentiment that Luke makes here and I think self reliance and realising that a lot of things that are made to seem important in modernity are just bollox. One thing he doesn't mention is that not all of us are fortunate enough to have a family pile we can escape to in the country.
@@LukeSmithxyz I was referring to your somewhat privileged position of being able to move into a family property and that others may take a lot longer before they could afford not to live pay check to pay check let alone to move out and buy land. But great video nonetheless.
Interesting. But at the end of the video you quickly said the critical flaw in this way of thinking: what would happen if I can't physically or mentally stay independant? What would happen I loose an arm , suffer from severe anxiety or just grow old alone? What am I supposed to do if I live in an harsh climate and I would want to live independantly (I'm from Quebec where winter can be extreme)? Considering these, I prefer the concept of interdependance, which accept the fact that it's almost impossible to be totally independant and, at the same time, recognize the balance of power that can exist between the two persons which are dependant on each other.

You have to pay for the gas, repairs, insurance and other things. Same thing is with a lot of things we don't think that we're dependent on. More technology we have the more we become dependent on it. In the movie matrix one of the characters said the zion relied on machines to live.

I keep a file of quotes that I feel are important enough to go back to and reflect on multiple times in the future. I added Luke's bit about making decisions based on how it affects your independence. No!!

The real big brained take is that we introverts should create our own -compound- rural community.

This was an excellent video. SO VERY TRUE! Thank you Luke.
Uncle Ted passed away. RIP
Great advice! I’m so glad to have a term to put with the thoughts I’ve been having.
“Cities are bad.” - Luke Smith, 2020

Independence it is always a good thing.

God I wish I was living how Luke is
A couple years ago I was thinking "i wish i was living how Varg (or whoever else does it) lives." Then, as I said, I just make the right choices when they came to me and bam.
Everything you say, always makes sense to me.
dude, your videos are wholesome. thank you.
"Put out or shut up" is my favourite pick up line
In terms of knowledge: do you have some books (or maybe tutorials) on rural living to recommend?
Just wing it bro
I used to think "I can't just start learning programming out of the blue, I need to find the best language to start with, I need to find the best tools to use, if I start with python/javascript/java I'll learn the wrong concepts and fixate the wrong ideas in my head"
but eventually you learn more low level languages and it doesn't matter, just like it doesn't matter which human language you learn to speak first.
Jump right into it and you'll learn so much.
tldr just wing it bro like the other commenter said
The word alienation has been missing from your speech.
I definitely agree with the sentiment that Luke makes here and I think self reliance and realising that a lot of things that are made to seem important in modernity are just bollox. One thing he doesn't mention is that not all of us are fortunate enough to have a family pile we can escape to in the country.
You don't need to buy land next to family. Don't makes excuses. Make new friends there.
@@LukeSmithxyz I was referring to your somewhat privileged position of being able to move into a family property and that others may take a lot longer before they could afford not to live pay check to pay check let alone to move out and buy land.
But great video nonetheless.
@@Jango1989 The most normie excuse that can be made.
Survival of the fittest breh
