PLAYA DEL CARMEN BEACH SEAWEED UPDATE - HORRIBLE! - SEAWEED EVERYWHERE! - CAN'T SEE THE BEACH!

  • This video will take you on a morning walk on the Famous Playa Del Carmen Beach in Mexico and provide information and an update on the seaweed situation. The seaweed situation is the worst I have seen. The seaweed is here earlier and worse this year.
This video was shot at Zenzi beach near El Faro Residences and I walked toward the Playa Del Carmen Ferry Dock. It is impossible to swim here without having lots of seaweed brush up against you.
Playa del Carmen is a coastal resort town in Mexico, along the Yucatán Peninsula's Riviera Maya strip of Caribbean shoreline. In the state of Quintana Roo, it’s known for its palm-lined beaches and coral reefs.
The coastal areas of Quintana Roo in Mexico are facing a large influx of sargassum, a type of brown seaweed, in 2023. The seaweed is expected to primarily impact the coastlines of Playa del Carmen and Puerto Morelos.
Esteban Amaro Mauricio, head of the Sargasso Monitoring Network of Quintana Roo, has said that the seaweed season in Playa del Carmen has increased by at least two months this year due to the presence of large "islands" of seaweed in the Caribbean Sea. This influx is expected to have a moderate to strong effect on the coasts of several areas in Quintana Roo. Efforts are being made to remove the seaweed and predict its movements through monitoring.

This report isn’t very fair to Playa del Carmen. Sargassum sea-weed is washing up on beaches throughout the Caribbean Sea and as far east as the Windward Islands…though not all beaches are affected all of the time. At present, there isn’t a simple solution and, ideally, it would be better to install barriers out in the water to prevent the seaweed from ever reaching the beach where it mixes with sand and becomes harder to handle. But the cost…

This is just a section of the beach. I came to this section a few weeks ago, and walked through it with no problem. (sorry mate, this is like a super drama queen coverage). I went north a few times, a kilometer or so like between 72 and 88 avenida and it was really nice on some occasions - like white sand - no seaweed at all. The sea clears it up like magic. I think people should still visit Playa. It is a beautiful magical place, even with the seaweed.

I lived in Puerto Vallarta for 2 years and then moved to Playa last end of May... I lasted about a month and went back to Vallarta. I couldn't stand the constant smell of sargassum. It's like having overflowing sewage in front of your house all day long. Even the tap water smells the same. It's horrible. It makes me sad that I was right that sargaso will start coming in sooner and sooner. I love the beach and not being able to visit any of them for over 6 months cause of sargaso was a deal breaker for me. I am very sensitive to any smells and when I first realized that the smell was rotting sargaso, I was shocked because I started throwing up.

@@joegardner5386 Hey Joe, Since 2007, I've lived in Yucatan, Mx. & will try to answer
your question. The simple answer is...YES...sargassum will be an issue on The Caribbean Beaches of Mexico during June 2023. If you're lucky, there may be a
short reprieve while you're in Playa del Carmen. BUT...wouldn't bet on it.
Now, why do I believe this:
Because...a MASSIVE AMOUNT of sargassum is behind what you're seeing in this video. A 5,000-mile-long raft of sargassum is now arriving on Caribbean Beaches
of Mexico, Belize & The Caribbean Islands. It'll likely reach Florida & The Gulf Coast
      of The U.S. as well.
This accumulation of sargassum is so massive that it stretches from The Yucatan Peninsula across The Atlantic Ocean to Western Africa & continuing to grow in size.
A few Biologists & other scientists are working-on ways to resolve this serious issue. But at this time, no funding is being allocated for the needed research to combat the
sargassum "before" it arrives on the beaches.
In my opinion, this inundation of sargassum will continue for the foreseeable future. Certainly for the next 6 or 8 months.
      Best regards from Yucatan Mexico,
      Ben
P.S. I'm sending you a link to a Playa del Carmen Webcam. You can use it to observe the sargassum accumulation, weather, etc. The camera is South of the ferry pier & operates 9a-5p Mexico Time.

That walkway with the walls that used to be one of the nicest stretches of beach in Playa. This is where the Blue Parrot used to be. The beach was so wide ,probably 200 feet. The Blue Parrot beach had nice little cabins on it. Now what used to be 200 ft. wide is not wide at all. I started going here in 1980 when Playa had one little grocery store on 5th ave. How did this ever happen? This place has been destroyed by no planning and over built. I hope the Mexican Government has learnt something on over building on mangroves and beach. Once the tourist are all gone because of the sargassum let mother nature take over and decay all the unused condos and hotels and return the beach the way it used to be back to nature. Could almost cry. All for the love of the greenback dollar. Shame on you Mexico you really did it.
