French cars now are as good, and in more and more cases : even better than what VW do, and they cost less money. Come to Germany or Austria, you'll see more and more French cars here.
Vw seems to be playing dumb, bmw instead of offering features as standard wants to make features a subscription service, at least the French for better or worse are trying. If car companies make a lot of money in China they need to please the Chinese consumer but compared to European consumers the Chinese like more tech features and European brands aren’t given them that.
Its certainly the best looking in red..... I had one for a week. The tech and the range is great. My only negative was the space between internal wheel arches in the boot. They restrict the width of the boot too much. It is definitely a BEV that should change people's pre conceived ideas of BEVs.
A very critical but fair review. Renault/Dacia ,could easily tempt me back to a French brand, after giving up on Citroens a couple of years ago - I think that Renault is a more sensible proposition than anything coming out of Stellantis - Fiat, Citroen, Peugeot. DS, Vauxhall, Alfa...
This car is a good example of how EV's are evolving. 5 years from now, it'll be interesting to see how this evolution has progressed..... Personally I'd have thought a useful safety feature such as the camera feed to the rear view mirror, ought to be an option on all trims.....
I really appreciate your work What Car. Your reviews keep things grounded and are my 'go to' for genuinely useful information... when I'm not dreaming about some ridiculously fast and desirable car I can't afford. 😆
When I saw the title picture I was thinking: Oh, Renault also builds an id4… at first glance, the front seems very similar. Renault is really delivering at the moment. R4 and the unbelievably cool R5, and now one for the more conservative audience. Well done Renault, well done…
For me the SUV tag is a bit misleading. Having seen one in real life it’s actually quite low slung like a large hatchback; certainly looks better than the pictures. Overall I like where Renault are going with EVs. The French government has also created some really generous incentives for EV adoption so even if it’s not a runaway success elsewhere I think Renault has a pretty captive market at home. Also it’s nice to see a car just be a car, to prioritise comfort and ride quality over this ‘sporty’ nonsense which most everyday drivers will only be able to access 2% of the time and the other 98% they’ll wish they could drive across a potholes road without losing the fillings or parallel park without a personal trainer.
The original Scenic was, to use a hackneyed term, a game changer. Rear seats that could be removed, recline and adjust. At the time it was a fashionable car. To describe it otherwise is a tad ungenerous. Nice to see a reviewer not 'dis' the traditional glorious Renault audio satellite controls for the stereo, something they did before anyone else. Too many buttons are on the steering wheel these days!
Had my alpine spec scenic for about 1500 miles so far. Love the car, spec, driving, looks etc, but brakes always groan and creak when stopping no matter how gentle i am with the pedal. Same when auto handbrake releases. Is this a common problem? Worth getting it back to the dealer to resolve?
I do think that all EV's should have a Froot/Front Boot/Frunk as on a trip with luggage your cables will be buried. But having a Froot means you can store the cables well away from the luggage and not have to empty the boot if you find yourself needing a cable to charge. Otherwise a good family sized EV and great to see it can be bought under that magic £40,000
Totally agree. It's a real faff getting the cable out of the boot under the main boot floor in my elscenic , especially if you've invested in a boot liner.
Renault are on their A-game right not and this looks like one hell of a package. However I mourn the death of the MPV. In terms of packaging it will always trounce an SUV.
Assuming it's substantially the same platform, the Scenic looks like it give a fair picture of what we can expect out of Nissan's Leaf replacement due in 25' and being produced in Sunderland from what I understand.
Don't the handles pop out automatically when you arrive to the car? And lock themselves when you start driving and pop out when you leave the car or push the unlock button? Never had to dig the handle on my Megane.
Yes, and legacy car sales are falling steadily as a result. Only cheaper cars such as Dacias, plus Tesla and Chinese EVs are improving. A few legacy brands will merge and survive as niche products but the automotive industry as we knew it is about to change drastically. Tarifs will not save them.
Electric car reviews always quote the range with a 100% battery, yet quote a charging time when only charging up to 80%. Why not also quote an 80% battery range?
I think too much fuss is made of hard scratchy plastic- so what?,it’s cheaper,it’s easier to clean and far more hard wearing, just focus on the benefits
Agreed and I would even go as far as to say necessary low down where it's more likely to get dirty from muddy shoes etc. I want a nice easy clean surface, not something that looks nice for 2 seconds then forever dirty as it is impossible to clean. Nice materials up high, hard wearing a wipe clean down low.

Very good report, but… You have a lot of international viewers, and I would like to know the price before UK taxes and VAT. I would also like metric info. Put it on the screen every time you use imperial.
After two test drives, I’ve noticed that an important issue is consistently missing from your reviews - the poor quality of the rear camera. It’s a crucial feature for many drivers, yet it seems to be overlooked. Why is this never addressed?
I tested both, prefered the 3 interior by a long mile, but prefered the driving ergonomics of the Scenic. Driving pleasure was a victory by K.O for Tesla. Still don't know what to get for now, despites all the test drives I did.
I’ve owned both, this does substantially more miles than a 3 RWD- around 50 more in real work driving, to me that makes a huge difference. This is a much more modern car, and I think it’s better, the ride is also much more plush for long journeys (albeit that’s improved on later 3). Insurance on this for me is nearly a third of the 3. I think the interior on this is a lot nicer than a 3. Teslas are great cars but the Techno LR version of this is the same price as the 3 RWD and offers substantially better value for money in an up to date package. Let’s put it this way, I wouldn’t send it back and get my 3 to replace it.
@@wakeywarrior so no screen in the back, no frunk storage, less efficient (so more expensive to run) and no supercharger network? Yeah for the same money I think I'd stick with the car that has decent brakes...

So people making 60k should only buy cars costing 20K? That really doesn’t leave much choice does it. The more pressing question is should we need to buy new cars as often as we do? The fact that public transport and road safety for non-driving road users is so poor is indicative of a society that would rather people spend money on stupidly depreciating assets than investing in more efficient, healthy and potentially safer forms of transport. And then we can all drive cool old cars on the weekends for fun obviously.
This one has the same designer as the Peugeot's newer models. Also, most cars are built on modular platforms which inevitably will make different models look the same.
So the long range does 15% less than Renault say it will and at what speed ? I assume that was in summer so less in winter. 60kw battery cars will do 110 to 120 miles on UK motorways.
I'm still concerned about the range and waiting around for an hour for recharge. Apparently the range is less in bad weather with lights and wipers on. A friend told me he was refused on the ferry crossing . Think I'll stick to petrol motor.
Just how far do you travel in a week and you wont have to visit a petrol station any more, just plug in at home or work. Your petrol car has less range in bad weather with the wipers and lights on… as for “a friend was refused….” that type of anecdote sounds like one an MP starts with…nuff said.

Nice review. What about the regen? Does the car do one pedal driving? Adjusting the volume as the passenger you'll have to use annoying capacitive controls on the infotainment system. I wish they'd put a rotary encoder for that.
Seriously consider it. This thing gets 320 miles all motorway driving, you can get that mileage for about an £8 charge at home. Very smooth, quiet, instant power etc. Just give one a try on a test, you’ll maybe change your view.
I’ve saved over £1400 in fuel costs over the last year switching from a 2 litre diesel Evoque to a Jaguar I-Pace. Plus I don’t have to stand in a smelly petrol station breathing in fumes anymore.
If I lived in the UK I’d be the same. The charging infrastructure is so poor and so unregulated that it makes owning a non-Tesla electric car stupidly complicated and expensive if you don’t have access to home charging. This isn’t really the same in countries with the infrastructure, cheaper electricity and better regulation. For me, with the low electricity costs and high fuel costs we have here, my next car will definitely be electric, that said the low cost of public transport and ever improved cycling infrastructure is making the need for a car less relevant every year….. so we’ll see.
It's interesting what reviewers say about steering wheels like this. They same reviewers said that about the Peugeots too, yet I have yet to meet an owner raise any concerns about it. In short, don't trust reviewers, check for yourself.
Excellent review; thanks Doug.👍 Had to laugh at your rear door handle comments! This is a sad and all too common example of redesigning the wheel 🛞. Who looked at car door handles , which have worked perfectly well for 60 years plus, and thought ;” Nah , I’ve got a much better solution! Some shitty little plastic flap, that can decapitate your fingers, that you have to press in and then pull out the handle . Brilliant in the winter; what could possibly go wrong?!”. Madness !
The sunroof is either transparent (see-through) or translucent (lets through diffuse light). It is not opaque because opaque means it doesn’t let light through at all (like a metal roof).
11:25 When a car purports to be up market...is it too much to ask to put a bit of plastic/rubber over the paint colour on the interior of the door /window frame? seems it is, but Renault isn't the only brand to dismiss this request.
I don’t see the point of these panoramic roofs. I had a hire car with one, didn’t like the feeling of the sun on my head and just closed the blind. I’d much rather a normal sunroof that can be cracked open for a bit of ventilation.
Snow? No mention of the very pleasant well equipped Nissan Ariya which is the same car underneath in this review . A Sloda Enyaq is still the car to beat in this part of the market.
You can buy a false floor that raises the load hight from Renault, it's about £150 but negotiate with the dealer and I know some people who got it thrown in for nothing.
I just think the whole car industry needs to stop referring to this class as SUV. There's nothing sports or utilitarian about this class - nobody will in the right mind take this into a field or dirt track. Given the steroidal growth of the car bodies to accomodate everyhing and anything, just rebrand them family cars. The Scenic has always been and will always be a reasonably respectable family car- wasn't it a mini MPV decades ago? Anyway, I digress. I do quite like what's being penned over at Renault with their most recent EVs and does offer viable alternatives to the exceedingly good Korean cars. Might even consider this to replace the latest gen Kona Ultimate when my term ends on my salary sacrifice.
All these range tests are driving between 65-70 mph not really practical in the real world where the average speed on the motorway would be a realistic 75-78 mph
Its true my Enyaq 60 goes from 210 miles real world at 50mph with air con and me and some stuff in the boot....to 170 at 75mph and then in peak winter wind...140. This scenics battery range is exactly what should be the base except for pensioner church runners.
It would not be a French car unless it had at least one completely bonkers element. Step forward the door handles, totally French - stylish and impractical. The sun roof is a wonderful idea though The boot design and the way the rear seats fold down is unforgivably bad. The range is impressive and charging times are fine for me. The price though is hard to take, probably £5-8k too much

What is your obsession of comparing to the Model Y? I’ve had one - it’s not a great car. Big screen does not equal good. It equals…big screen. And with regards to blocking the screen - in my usual seating position on a Model Y I couldn’t even see the speed because it was tucked into the top right of the screen - obscured by my arm on the wheel.
Why did you buy one in the first place? The big screen is pretty obvious, even before a test drive. Strange complaint. And only one main complaint…. A big screen.
It is a benchmark, used to pique people's interest but also to see how other cars compare to something they might be familiar with. Germans should be concerned! Renault group much more attractive than VW at the moment in my opinion (still got a soft spot for Skoda though)
I am German. I can tell you that more and more Germans are absolutely furious at VW and the others (BMW, Mercedes Benz) unbelievably high prices. French cars now are as good, and in more and more cases : even better than what VW do, and they cost less money. Come to Germany or Austria, you'll see more and more French cars here.
@@klausschelling8159 Hi Klaus, I am an Englishman living in Tirol! Currently driving Dacia Jogger because I am not rich, but happy :-)
Did you choose the full red, or red with the black roof? The price of the black roof option shocked me in the configurator.

whatsinmy AI fixes this. Renault Scenic: Best Electric SUV?
A very critical but fair review. Renault/Dacia ,could easily tempt me back to a French brand, after giving up on Citroens a couple of years ago - I think that Renault is a more sensible proposition than anything coming out of Stellantis - Fiat, Citroen, Peugeot. DS, Vauxhall, Alfa...
This car is a good example of how EV's are evolving. 5 years from now, it'll be interesting to see how this evolution has progressed..... Personally I'd have thought a useful safety feature such as the camera feed to the rear view mirror, ought to be an option on all trims.....
Not outstanding when it comes to charging speeds? It can charge at up to 22Kw on AC power which makes it quite unique.
But sold with 7.5kwh AC charger by default, 22kwh option is 2000€

It’s surprisingly small and lower on the outside than you think. We have a Sportage and it’s noticeably lower but just as big inside.
I wish these were available in the US.
Phyisical buttons for climate control are better than using a screen but still a step back from dials. Dials > buttons > screen controls.
Yes they do.
@@wakeywarrior So the problem really isn't there. 😅
Dealbreaker was the interior design for me. I preferred the cockpit style of the Peugeot e3008 as well as the exterior looks.
£37k for a family car is insane- the world has gone mad and the reviewers say it is good value😮
Welcome fellow Scot!

Agreed and I would even go as far as to say necessary low down where it's more likely to get dirty from muddy shoes etc. I want a nice easy clean surface, not something that looks nice for 2 seconds then forever dirty as it is impossible to clean.
Nice materials up high, hard wearing a wipe clean down low.
150kW charging speed is fine considering that very few public chargers are available that can even get close to that.
not as future proofed as some other rivals

Please add the metric system to your script and editing
And please tell us how tall you are, so we can judge the rear seat space and headroom. You just about fit in the middle seat, but are you 5 ft 2 or 6 ft 5? Just a pop up on screen would suffice, giving the presenters height in imperial and metric.
Very good report, but…
You have a lot of international viewers, and I would like to know the price before UK taxes and VAT.
Try more detailed, longer format channels like Autogefuel.
Opinions, this or a 2024 Model 3 RWD Long range, in terms or range and interior space (boot)? (Not focused on the cost difference)

For me it is way better than tesla.
You have to be dreaming, nothing and I mean nothing touches the maps and superchargers that make life easy when on a long trip to a place you have not been to it plots everything for you. All I heard on this review was excuses from the reviewer. Charging speed not as good as model Y.

I hate comments like this but 40k! We shouldn't really be buying cars for more than. 1/3 our salary. So you need 120k for a base Renault!? Mad times
You can lease it for about 430 a month. You can then do over 300 miles for about £8 if charging at home.

This is very different from any BMW, Mercedes, Tesla and Polestars. Maybe Peugeots look a bit similar. But generally speaking I wouldn’t say so.
This one has the same designer as the Peugeot's newer models. Also, most cars are built on modular platforms which inevitably will make different models look the same.

Not generally a fan of SUV's but that is one good looking car, especially in that colour!
Has Renault built any chargers in the UK??

Renault can do no wrong right now. I'm very impressed. However like last comment, I'll also not consider EV
Then go for the Symbioz, Austral, Espace or Rafale
Interested to know why? Seems like a pretty great car regardless of power source
A kinda cool Scenic? It's very tempting
What's the battery degradation warranty?
The battery in my MG4 is guaranteed for 10 years, and the car for 8.

Had to laugh at your rear door handle comments!
Take the entry level and avoid the Luxury Car Tax!

I don’t see the point of these panoramic roofs. I had a hire car with one, didn’t like the feeling of the sun on my head and just closed the blind. I’d much rather a normal sunroof that can be cracked open for a bit of ventilation.
I would be worried that those door handles would be prone to freezing up in cold weather
Snow? No mention of the very pleasant well equipped Nissan Ariya which is the same car underneath in this review . A Sloda Enyaq is still the car to beat in this part of the market.
Finally, an EV that doesn’t look Chinese…

Renault deliberately market this as a "Family Car" .. they themselves make no mention of SUV
Wasn’t this once a minivan?

Why jet another SUV they should do MPV as Scenic always was
All these range tests are driving between 65-70 mph not really practical in the real world where the average speed on the motorway would be a realistic 75-78 mph
The sun roof is a wonderful idea though
The boot design and the way the rear seats fold down is unforgivably bad.
The range is impressive and charging times are fine for me. The price though is hard to take, probably £5-8k too much
