  • This is a review of the Syncro 12 by Osprey. It is a biking/hiking pack designed to be lightweight, framed for support, and to keep you hydrated. In this review I go over features to compare the two packs as well as to point out features and possible benefits of what the pack has to offer.
    I ended up keeping the Syncro 12 vs the Syncro 5 simply because of the additional storage and the ability to take the size of the pack down if desired. I really did like the weight and feel of the Syncro 5 but it just came down to practicality.
    I hope the video is helpful in comparing these two bags as well as a contrast to other biking and hiking bags that are competing for your dollars.
    Comment below which bag you would buy or the reason you wouldn't buy them.

    We bought the Syncro 5 & 12 and the womens Sylva 5 & 12.
    The only real noticeable difference between the 5 & 12 is the severely reduced capability/versatility of the 5's... the 5's are very cramped with a full bladder, especially with the rigid frame center crossbar pushing the bladder outward.
    From what we could tell both sizes have the same size inner frame and feel the same on our backs.
    There is a slight weight difference, but we couldn't feel it.
    We bike and hike, we kept the 12's for its very useful extra compartment.

      I felt the same way. The 12 has been very useful. But if there weren't a 12 option, I would still be happy with the 5. It would just keep me from bringing extras. Like a forced minimalist approach.

    • @dash8465
      @dash8465 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ilinauf If there weren't a 12 we would have still sent the 5 back.. its simply too small, we have kid & dog that usually go too, so we need a few extra things along... food, leash, collapse able water bowl, booboo kit, etc.. The 12 is just right in that its enough, but doesn't allow for nonsensical extras either.
      A close runner up was the Mule and Lux, almost went with them, but the airy back and nicer overall construction of the Osprey's won.

    Thanks so much for taking the time to do such in-depth reviews on these two bags! I've already got a small bag on the mountain bike so I'm going for the 5 to keep things as minimalist on the back as possible. Cheers!

      @@ilinauf mine is never locked for very long. I wanted a strong lock that was easy to carry or I wouldn’t take it. Best easy carry, heavy duty, visually deterrent lock out there, as long as you don’t mind wearing it as a belt.

    Heya, and thanks for the in-depth comparison! That trampoline system caught my eye a few days ago when I was searching for a solution for sweaty back while riding mtb, and hence piqued my interest. Was hoping to find a comparison between the different sizes, and what do you know, here it is. I'll probably go for the syncro 5 since I like to ride light, just the bladder, essential tools, a packable jacket, smartphone and few snacks. For me that's easily enough for 4-5 hour rides, so all that extra space of the syncro 12 would most likely be just annoying. Everything would just flap and flail around for no good reason. But it's great to have the option for different sizes though, so everyone can tailor their kit with ease. But yeah, thanks again!

      I have the raptor 18 litre they discontinued that size but have smaller ones that will be better than this range as its bike specific and not as wide compared to this. . I never understood why!. To be honest I've cycled with a lot more weight ok my back and Never noticed the weight as it's sitting on your shoulders and back.

    Thanks for sharing this review. Would you recommend the Syncro 12 vs Raptor 14?
    I don't care much for the rollable tool pouch from the Raptor, I'm ok with the Syncro's tool organizer.

    • @marekschwarzmann1638
      @marekschwarzmann1638 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      i just solved the same dilemma: syncro won because of the air-speed system for your back - helluva breathable - wife has sylva bag with the same system, co i tried it on one run and it was epic - i was little bit less sweaty on my back than usual, felt bit more comfy and definitely felt the air venting during the whole ride.. then i borrowed 20L talon from my friend (with the same mesh system as raptor has) and the feel was good, but after a 40km ride i was definitely more sweaty than with that sylva one..

    Great review! Having same struggling between these 2 bags... The honest need is actually 5 but the options of 12 shakes the mind... Just curious, for now is the “options” got any actual chance to apply itself in your use? And what do you think could the 5 be used for everyday use? Just like you I don’t carry things a lot...

    • @ilinauf
      @ilinauf  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm still happy that I went with the 12-L bag. It gives me more options it's just more versatile. I've even used it for hiking as well as just everyday carry.

    thanks for the review! would it be possible to fit a laptop in without the bladder for the 12, without the pack's frame pushing into it?

    • @ilinauf
      @ilinauf  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A 15" laptop just fits but the frame definitely presses against it. So you may want to put some padding somehow between it or find another solution.

    Thank you for the review, ilinauf. Can you access your jersey pockets with either/both packs? I am 6'4", so was thinking that may leave more room to be able to use them. I am as you were, leaning towards the 5, but see the practicality of the 12. But my main reason for buying is the hydration. Thank you.

      Thank you for the quick reply. The (usually) three pockets at the rear bottom of a bicycle jersey. I would still like to use them while wearing the pack. What I really need is a pack that just holds 2.5l of water.

    • @ilinauf

      @@captmike390 I think it may block it but you can adjust the pack to sit pretty high on your shoulders. I just don't own one of those jerseys to really know the proper reach. Hope this is slightly helpful. Sorry I couldn't do more. Aloha

    Is the scratch protected pocket any bigger on the 12 vs the 5? Also, would you say the 5 big enough to hold a large, standard weight, folded rain shell? Hoping to purchase tonight. Been trying to decide between the two packs. Thanks!!

    • @ilinauf
      @ilinauf  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The scratch pocket, to my memory, was identical in size. For the rain shell, if that is like a poncho, I believe it would fit.
