You're my hero. As a tight knitter, I'm always on the look-out for stretchy cast-ons and bind-offs. I've recently been looking for a stretchy cast-on for seed stitch. All the other stretchy cast-ons I've tried aren't stretchy with seed stitch even though they work fine with lots of other stitches. Yours, however, is. Now I can finally start the boot cuffs I'm knitting for someone as a gift. Thank you so much!

I love this cast on!! I have used it for socks and booties and sweaters and hat. It is terrific because you don't have a long tail to have to guess and deal with. I don't know why anyone would use a long tail cast on for a stretchy edge. This is so much better and has such a pretty edge. Thank you so much for sharing!!!!!!!!!!!
I’ve been using this cast on for years, especially for knitting socks. I’m back here after the _one time_ I decided to use another cast on, had to frog it back and start over 😂 it just wasn’t stretchy enough. Thanks for a great video 👏🏼

omg! thank you so much! i have been watching different cast on stitch videos trying to find the one my gramma taught me when i was little.i have been interested in getting back into knitting but its been like almost 30 yrs and i was sitting here with a ball of string and two pencils trying to remember how i used to cast on...i decided to watch some videos to refresh my memory and none were exactly it....the simple cast on was one i used as a kid but that wasnt the better one my gramma showed me....after watching several different methods and trying them to see..this was it almost....lol....the beginning was what made me remember..i just pass over the yarn to make the stitch a little different....when you twist the strand over the needle instead of coming under to grab the other part i do a yarn over the needle with my right hand like when you knit.the result is the same....

This is the way I was taught how to cast on 70 years ago when I first began to knit it was called the thumb method, it was quite a while before I was shown the two needle method. I do use the thumb method for a nice elastic type of hem.
Same here, this was always my regular cast on and, like you, mum and I called it the thumb method. However I do love wandering around youtube and I do now try various cast-ons and cast-offs. Proper spoilt for choice now..... so lucky to have the internet.... and all the great options we see from all over the world, and all the helpful tutorials.
I loved this easy way of creating a stretchy cast on. Tried another one and just could not get it. This is super easy and so valuable. Just wanted to let you know that this cast-on method is being touted on the web as ”Jenys Stretchy Cast-On”, as a complementary cast on to her "Jenys Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off". However, if your mom discovered it in the 80's, I think she has the prior claim. B-) Regardless, your video is MUCH easier to understand and learn from than any of the others I've watched. Kudos to you and your mom, and thank you very much for sharing!

I compared this method with the Chinese Waitress cast on, and find that its a touch more stretchy. I find the Chinese Waitress cast on to be a touch more attractive. Both are quite a bit more stretchy than the Twisted German/ Norwegian cast on method, which was my go to stretchy CO. This cast on method produces the same knot configuration as Jeny Staiman's slip knot cast on. The difference is using the needle to create the twist in the yarn vs Jeny's twisting the yarn with her left fingers. The trick to both is leaving just the right amount of yarn between each slip knot- too little and its not as stretchy. Thanks for posting. I liked your video and found it very easy to follow the first time through.

This is the "sling knot" cast on that's used in net making. It's a line of slip knots. Your way of making it is much easier, I've never seen it used for knitting. When I saw this, I decided to use it for the cast on for an ankle sock and it works great. Your mom was a genius!
Thank you so much for this video. I was using the long tail cast on for socks, which worked fine for children's socks, but was too tight to fit over the heel on men's socks. I then tried the Old Norwegian cast on, but that wasn't all that much better. I have now tried your method and it worked brilliantly! Now the sock can get on the foot easily! The method is not too complicated, and looks good. I also appreciated your additional video where you show how to tighten the loop. I can see how it would also work well when you have to cast on in the middle of a project. I agree that this cast on should be much more widely known. Thank you to your mum, Karen

aka Buttonhole cast on (Montse Stanley); Jeny's Stretchy Slip-knot cast-on (Jeny Staiman); Single Yarn Double Knot Cast On (oftroy--see TH-cam video). There are several ways to make the slip knot, but basically, it's just a series of slip knots on the needle.

In the case of this cast on, it was largely abandoned in favor of the long tail and other cast ons, since this one tends to stretch out of shape when knitting the first row or round, leaving the cast on edge rather unstable and unsightly. You will notice in the video, that the knitter is tugging hard after each cast on stitch, that is no accident. Without that yank on the yarn, this cast on is a mess. Learn the real long tail cast on instead, and then a few others.
Wow. I am someone who learned from my grandmother how to co a verity of fiber arts. I tried to learn to knit for years and just could not wrap my brain arojnd it. My grandmother learned from her grandmother and mother and the same several generations back. My ancestors learned to look, study, and then recreate the item by memory. i have finally learned to knig....4 years ago. I did not learn how to read a crochet pattern until about 6 years ago. I did start learning to read knitting patterns very early. The one thing i have found in all of my fiber arts is that of all the stiches, cuts, pulling, etc...in our time chances are it has been done before...even if we have never seen it. We may call it new and our discovery, but that does not mean it was plagorized. I know many mountain people, many tibe members who do not know how to read...some as younb as 20, and they get excited when they fiugure out how to recreate what they have seen or create something in their minds eye. Please understand i do not intend on hurting anyones feeling or be offensive, but i hope my chiming in on the what i find to be negative and purposefully hurtful comments willl gently remind all of us there most of the time are many more sides than we can see and we should try to find enncouraging words to get outr point across.

I forgot to add: the reason this works so well is that it is based on an e cast on, which is rightfully notorious for stretching way out of shape. Unlike the standard e cast on, each e is immediately stabilised by knitting a stitch into it. Those knitted stitches help keep the e caston from stretching hopelessly out of shape, gently transforming it into a nicely stretchy cast on.
Had to fiddle a little with finger hold, as arthritis prevents fists from closing. Tight pull is necessary to tighten the stitch and even the gap in between stitches. Very nice cast-on, once I practiced enough to get right tension.
Wow, I am really struggling to get this despite being an advanced knitter. Having a tough time pulling each knot snug and also getting my tension right between each c/o stitch -- I suppose both will come with practice (if I can stick with it and not go back to my fave, twisted German. Does anyone have a different video or tute that might help me visualize this better?
Search for Jeny’s Stretchy Cast On, there are lots of really good clear videos and this is basically the same thing. The loop can be difficult to pull tight at times.
Im usually very good at following along with these types of tutorials. However, I keep ending up with 2 cast ons with each one. I guess I don't get it.
I cannot imagine how you get a stretchy cast on when the yarn is pulled with such vigor which means I will have to try it for myself. Is this the same as the slipknot cast on?

Unlike the standard e cast on, each e is immediately stabilised by knitting a stitch into it. Those knitted stitches help keep the e caston from stretching hopelessly out of shape, gently transforming it into a nicely stretchy cast on.
Had to fiddle a little with finger hold, as arthritis prevents fists from closing. Tight pull is necessary to tighten the stitch and even the gap in between stitches. Very nice cast-on, once I practiced enough to get right tension.
Wow, I am really struggling to get this despite being an advanced knitter. Having a tough time pulling each knot snug and also getting my tension right between each c/o stitch -- I suppose both will come with practice (if I can stick with it and not go back to my fave, twisted German. Does anyone have a different video or tute that might help me visualize this better?
Search for Jeny’s Stretchy Cast On, there are lots of really good clear videos and this is basically the same thing. The loop can be difficult to pull tight at times.

Im usually very good at following along with these types of tutorials. However, I keep ending up with 2 cast ons with each one. I guess I don't get it.

I can't follow this, I've been trying for ages. I cast on two stitches instead of one every time... am I doing something obvious wrong?
I cannot imagine how you get a stretchy cast on when the yarn is pulled with such vigor which means I will have to try it for myself. Is this the same as the slipknot cast on?
