The intimidation factor of a large blade is so true. Black Friday 2009 (talk about a situation where you need to be carrying) sitting in front of Target with the Mrs. Stepped out of line to go to the car and a guy comes up to me and whips out this little blade and tells me to hand over my wallet. When I whipped out my Kbar d2 instead, he took off running. It was a crocodile dundee type situation. I could have whipped out the colt just as easy but he was just a punk kid.
specopsbrat I don't carry my KBar Tanto as an urban EDC. I carry kershaw emerson cqc7/8. I don't want to flash my knife at all. If I use it, you won't see it before you feel it.
I have been buying Cold Steel blades since the 80's. The Black Belt and Ninja magazines would advertise Cold Steel tantos everywhere so I was introduced to them at an early age and have grown up with them. They are probably my long time top favorite blades. They have such a wide variety of products and are still involved in the martial arts world and defensive styles of blades. So many lines of top quality. The large fixed blade Recon Tantos are amazing! I still carry an old school Voyager like the one in this video and mainly carry a Gunsite along with a mini tac around the neck. Absolutely love them you can never go wrong with Cold Steel.
i carry my espada XL g-10 to work sometimes. its always great fun when people notice it. i carry a izula2 IWB or a sog aegis with it for actual utility but everyone loves the sword.
Just went to cutleryshoppe, and the description of the first knife displayed: Cold Steel 58TPC Code 4 - 3.5" Clip Point Plain Edge Blade - Aluminum Handle - A NUTNFANCY FAVORITE 10 OUT OF 10! I carry the old school Voyager XL Tanto, but...thought it interesting to see the description. Good job Nutnfancy!
Great knives, i have several blades for edc and around the house use like cooking, bbq, skinning, etc. I used to buy other brands like spyderco or benchmade but now i got rid of those and i just buy cold steel products, i edc a cold steel voyager xl tanto, i stick with them and this is why, they are reasonably priced to the point that if i loose one i can order another one on the spot through amazon or ive even had a friend admire my voyager xl so much that i gave one away to a buddy who didnt believe in carrying a gun so he liked my knife and i told him id give it to him if he promised to edc it for self defense, they are built like tanks, razor sharp out of the box, and i love that they have series like the voyager series or the espada series, you pick your favorite blade design and you can buy three different sizes.
Dude, you forgot the Rajah II! The Voyager XL is a bargain, and a true folding survival knife. I've actually used it for fire prep and shelter and trap making with much success. The secret, aside from the lock, is the handle generates greater reach, so even tho the blade is 5.5", it acts more like a 7"+ blade.
Love Cold Steel blades. I have the Tokyo Spike neck knife and it is bade to the bone sharp and fun to carry. I get tired of loading down my pockets sometimes and carrying a nice sized, easily concealable blade rocks!
totally agree with you, CS knives are fantastic.I have 17 Voyagers of different sizes and in many, many years of use (and sometimes abuse) camping and hunting I have absolutely no complaint
Cold steel is awesome, even their cheaper knives!!! I have the recon 1 tanto, xl tanto, med tanto, and large vaquero, the smaller voyagers I carry most. I also love the neck knives like the spike series, and mini tac. I have a few more cold steel knives too they are all amazing!
I used to look at Cold Steel blades as gimmicks. Your review prompted me to go buy one to try. I just ordered a Recon 1XL Tanto non serrated to try as a new EDC. I love tanto blades for EDC because I find them harder to break. I'm 2'8" 260 so I love larger blades to fit my stature. I'll let you know how I like it.
I purchased both the medium and large voyagers after Nutn did his original review of the newest versions. After carrying the medium version as an EDC for just a few days I noticed, what I feel is, a potentially dangerous design flaw. I've found that the dual thumb stud often catches on the outside of your pocket, partially opening the blade upon extraction. I kept carrying it, using it daily at work, and though being mindful of this still cut myself. Now both of these otherwise solid blades just sit in my gun safe. Cold Steel should make the thumb stud reversible just like the pocket clip.
I love KRV's that's what made me a life long TNP fan. I love the value that cold steel offers. I can't wait to get a taliwar and other XL cold steel blades. It's always fun to see your friends faces when you pull a 5-6 inch blade out of your pocket.
I was planning on getting the 4" Recon 1 with the tanto blade but was sort of considering the larger one, but when looking at it I just couldn't help to think that it is very, very large. However after watching this I thought to myself "Why do I want this?" and the answer is "To carry just in case but hopefully never use.", so the larger one it is. Occasionally drooling over it is also a reason, of course. These knifes are sexy.
Underneath the coating the Recon XL blade and Voyager XL blade look pretty similar. I have the clip point XL and L Voyagers, and the L is my EDC knife. I've just ordered the XL Voyager Vaquero serrated, which is almost as scary as the old Vaquero Grande.
The voyager XL is simply a beast. Very high value for an "off the rack" production item. The Cold steel Talwar is a step up from the voyager, sure it costs more, and it is worth it too.
Yes ! Love the KRVs ! And yes Cold Steel is such an awesome company because the produce knives like this . The Spartan is my favorite that I have used so far .
I own the large clip point voyager and I've always considered picking up the xl. This video may have just put me over the edge, I think I'll be opening up the wallet very soon, thanks nutn!
I love carrying my 4 inch Talwar as much as possible. While i do understand the concept of a bigger blade being more intimidating to possibly ward off a potential threat that way , its not always practical. Some of the slightly larger blades i own do not fit well into some of my pants ,which is most certainly a factor when it comes to EDC, but even more importantly is the handling. A nice big blade with plenty of reach may be perfect for self defense ,but not so much so when it comes to more regular tasks such as opening boxes and such. Of course this is all just my own personal preference of course.
Another great review Nutn! The ability to have a folding tactical blade that can also flex into heavier tasks is hard to overstate. Be that as it may the singles greatest or most common use of a folding knife is in the work place. I see more savagely abused knives in the workplace than anywhere else. I mean when you see a guy at a job site on some mission while using his knife it aint pretty, but he and his knife are there to get the job done. If your job site mentality is "Work or Die" let me suggest the triad lock Cold Steel! From my experience you will not find a tougher production knife at any price.
I'm protesting the Nutnfancy KRVs I'm supposed to be shopping for Christmas presents for others not my self lol. Merry Christmas and happy new year Nutn. Keep up the fight. Awwwwoooo
just a quick tip for all those with serrated knives from cold steel and no sharpener for them....use your butchers steel from your kitchen, tried it out the other day just on a whim to see what it would do, serrations were outta the box sharp again with little more than a minute on the steel! great for if you need sharpening in a pinch!
Great video Nutn. I edc a large recon 1 and I love it. The recon 1 is almost perfect for me. The only thing that would make it better is to have wavable version.
Cold Steel knives are my favorite. They just have kickass designs and I like the Tri-ad lock. I don't get blade play with that lock either. In fact my 2nd non generic knife bought was that same Voyager Tanto XL early model due to the TNP review back then.
GREAT vid again nutn! i gave my little brother my cs recon 1 4in.. everytime i visit him i fondle that damn thing because i miss it haha such a wicked blade
I was at my local army surplus store about two weeks ago and saw they had one of the old style XL Voyagers. I got excited until the guy told me they wanted $109 for it! Holy crap, I paid $49 for the new version of the XL! I was tempted to buy it as a collectible and add to my stash, but it would have been short lived after the wife ran me through with it......
Mr. Nutnfancy, I took an interest in your lanyard system that you use on your cold steel large espada. I own the model with the polished handle. How would you recommend me to drill the holes for the lanyard? Are there any lanyards in particular that you recommend which I could order online? Also what method do you use for sharpening your large espada? Thanks, A Civilian Sheepdog
As much as the intimidation factor is true, here in Canada that will land a person in a lot of trouble, as the laws state that a knife can not be legally carried for self defense, must be a tool first and foremost... but no matter what, be it a swiss army knife or the Voyager with the 5.5" blade... if you display it ito intimidate a person, you have now classified it as a weapon, and are in a world of trouble.
I always ask dudes with sweet blades if they're TNP'rs. I've met a few that way, full gear checks always follow. And you're right Nutn, most people are soo unprepared.
I'd love to carry a 4 inch blade, but in Michigan 3 inch is the legal limit. And you can only own a switch blade if you can only use one arm. So right now I'm carrying a benchmade mini presidio.
Hey Nutn When you're out there on a hike do you only eat what you bring? What I'm really trying to say is what do you recommend in the way of fishing gear and fishing for food out there in the woods?
all right nutn, totally agree with this POU. I previously bought a Voyager 4" and used it as an edc blade, and was very disappointed in the blade steel. But in the context of a dedicated tactical blade it does make sense. I guess I just like to flex my tactical blade into edc roles more often.
I found that when I started cutting through anything like cardboard, or wood the razor sharp factory edge dulled much faster than my other knives, which are only 8c313mov.
GlowWormActual Hello fellow knife fan! I agree that AUS-8A may not hold an edge for long compared to other high end steels. BUT, there are some things you may want to take into consideration. 1) AUS-8A from Cold Steel is a great all around affordable stainless. A higher RC/heat treat may give harder edge, but could make the overall strength of the blade weaker. I think CS opted for best overall performance. 2) CS grinds their edges in my experience for overall use, with moderate angles - from 25-35 degrees. Cardboard cutting is a fairly harsh activity for ANY knife steel. Finer/acute angles from 10-20 degrees offer less resistance for this material. If you have an accurate sharpener, try those angles when you resharpen/reprofile. 3) There are *many* grades of cardboard with varying degrees of material, thickness and toughness (due to glue/polymers used) - these will *definitely* effect edge performance. 4) Cutting techniques. Using a pulling/stroke cut, utilizes almost the entire length of the blade as opposed to push cuts, that may just wear down a portion of an edge. Also, when cutting *anything* for long durations, take breaks in between to sharpen up the edge before it gets too dull. This, IMO should be done with any blade steel. Some more than others, of course. In short, heat treat/hardness, edge geometry, material, and cutting techniques affect cutting performance. Pick your poisons, make the right choices, and good luck! Take care.
Another great review NutN'. Have you reviewed the knife sharpner you mention in the video? I would like your opinion on some of your favorite knife sharpening systems.
I have a 4in tanto voyager that I've had for over 10 years and just recently had the edge reshaped.. took off that secondary point and rounded it off.. looks soooo ill (but I can't put up a pic to show you).. and yes I love the hell out of this knife as well.. 😏
would you recommend a voyager or a resilience for a edc fun blade, a comparison would be nice no one has one up and their almost exact same price and materials. you have = recommendations to cold steel and spyderco so im curious
Nutnfancy is Psychic! I was looking at these exact knives for work less than 24 hours ago! I am a Boatswains Mate in the USN, so I need a good hardcore folder, for all the line I have to cut with celerity. But is the serrated version or the non-serrated version that I should get? I am leaning towards the part serrated, to get the slicing done quick. Are my thoughts correct guys?
that's an awesome looking knife, I've been looking for a new spring assist for EDC if anyone has a suggestion please tell me about some spring assists that only cost about $60 or less, I prefer somewhat long blades.
I agree Cold Steel makes badass knives. If i were to have a good tactical folder i would use the Cold Steel. i still love my Spyderco Endura 4 though for it's weight and blade.
Pulling a large tactical blade does in fact work at stopping fights before they happen. I know, I have, and it does work. Pulling out a Spyderco Manix XL with skull paracord lanyard on it, definitely makes someone think twice about trying to rob you.
I always loved Tantos but was afraid to own more than a couple. Now that I have the edge pro and doing tantos are easy, their all I buy! I'm looking to getting the ex tanto voyager this weekend.
They are sweet, aren't they? Incredible value for money. To increase edge holding, and take advantage of AUS-8's edge stability, try lowering the bevel angle. Mine's 30 inclusive, and unbelievably sharp, and doesn't chip or bend during hard use. You could probably go lower, but so far, 30 is just great.
i love my edge pro! if u get the high grit ceramic, u can have a show knife or if u use it as a edc i stop at about 1000-1500 grit after that it seems like it doesnt cut well
well when you go passed your 1000 grit stone, and up to 3000 and over, your edge becomes super smooth, if you have your angle set to where the tapes are hitting the edge. Those smooth edges do not even feel sharp to the touch, but if your cutting cardboard and plastics or other hard materials they are the best! They will not perform well for fiberous and soft things though. Smooth edges are very strong. I bought the 1200 grit edge pro stone, it really helps bring up the polish!
hmm well i only have up to 2500 or 3k grit never tried going higher becouse it wouldnt cut papper after that and i couldnt get it to pop hair after that ether, half my knives like my spyderco's i dont even use i just display, i also have kershaw, case, crkt, benchmade, gerber, etc list goes on
Cold Steel knives best ever,I use a Spartan everyday.Everyday it gets usage from cutting to prying open doors..Even used it to chip away mortar..Killed a Mastiff with my new VoyagerXL,Just in time for Christmas!!! I Love Dogs Though,Sad day it was..
Dude, if I buy myself anymore Christmas presents my wife is going to divorce me.

Yes!! More knife videos
"The soothing blue of the review table.." Nutn
Gotta love the old school knife vids!
i carry my espada XL g-10 to work sometimes. its always great fun when people notice it. i carry a izula2 IWB or a sog aegis with it for actual utility but everyone loves the sword.
Three knife reviews at once.
Bad ass.
Thank you nutn.
Happy holidays
I regularly rotate the Recon1L and Voyager XL into my EDC. loving all the CS folders.
I have the 6" Hold Out and it's absolutely fantastic. Cold Steel and Spyderco is where it's at ^^
I've got my knife on me today.. along with my multitool and flashlight.
Great stuff dude..
Thanks for the video
Just went to cutleryshoppe, and the description of the first knife displayed:

Love Cold Steel, especially my Espada. That's the one out of all of them (50+)that I won't part with. Thanks for the reviews Nutn, all the best.
finally we are getting more HD vids was getting sick and tired at looking at grainy knives and guns. keep up the good work
Love my gen II recon tanto w/ plain edge. A serious knife for serious stuff.
Cold Steel makes great knives, I see them as knives with an attitude. And I dig that very strong very affordable.
Carry my 4 inch recon 1 all the time! I love it. Keep up the old school KRV's Nutn!!

I've been saying that for years! Love the video. Watched your Recon 1 video a few years ago and have been carrying the Tanto every day since.
I love KRV's that's what made me a life long TNP fan. I love the value that cold steel offers. I can't wait to get a taliwar and other XL cold steel blades. It's always fun to see your friends faces when you pull a 5-6 inch blade out of your pocket.

Occasionally drooling over it is also a reason, of course. These knifes are sexy.
I have an old school Voyager Tanto as well. Has been used and abused and is still my EDC. A knife you can trust.

Okay, this time you did get me with the old Voyager XL. I guess just because of the shape. The weight is a good point.
I carry the x large tanto voyager every day even hunting it is one of the best knifes I have ever had and this channel I why I got it
I like the "gargantuan bear" in magpul flat dark earth. All of these blades look terrific. I edc'd the big recon 1 for years and it was great.
Way o share the love for cold steel. Despite the controversy.Keep up the great work nutn
Thanks for putting in the time for a great review
Opened my inbox and low and behold THREE krv's! Nanananaaaa Awsome!
Wow, three knife reveiws in one night. Gotta love it.
I'd love the Recon 1 in a fixed blade version and kydex sheath.
check out the recon tanto. Fixed blade version of the recon 1 tanto.
I'm protesting the Nutnfancy KRVs I'm supposed to be shopping for Christmas presents for others not my self lol. Merry Christmas and happy new year Nutn. Keep up the fight. Awwwwoooo
I think it would be cool if CS did this style of hard use knife with hard use blades: carbon steels, convex grinds, ect.
just a quick tip for all those with serrated knives from cold steel and no sharpener for them....use your butchers steel from your kitchen, tried it out the other day just on a whim to see what it would do, serrations were outta the box sharp again with little more than a minute on the steel! great for if you need sharpening in a pinch!
Great video Nutn. I edc a large recon 1 and I love it. The recon 1 is almost perfect for me. The only thing that would make it better is to have wavable version.
Cold steel code 4 and counter point 1 my faves
Cold Steel knives are my favorite. They just have kickass designs and I like the Tri-ad lock. I don't get blade play with that lock either. In fact my 2nd non generic knife bought was that same Voyager Tanto XL early model due to the TNP review back then.
Love the KRVs. Gonna try a new voyager because of your review.
Great more Krv's! Just got my Cold Steel Spartan and Talwar for Christmas.
I've had a chance to handle the Benchmade 581. I wonder what your is before purchasing one. Thanx
GREAT vid again nutn! i gave my little brother my cs recon 1 4in.. everytime i visit him i fondle that damn thing because i miss it haha such a wicked blade
yep I with you on cold steel all the way man. I just love my voyager large, my lady stole the small one so I stepped up a wee bit!!
Right on Target! CS Tri-Ads "Rock!"
Good review, Nutnfancy. Good advice telling people to carry a big knife. The big knife may keep a person >out of trouble.
KNIFE SHOW! Been Missing it. Awesome.

Are there any lanyards in particular that you recommend which I could order online? Also what method do you use for sharpening your large espada?

I did the same thing to my recon, but it was splitting the pelvic bone on a deer!

When you're out there on a hike do you only eat what you bring?
What I'm really trying to say is what do you recommend in the way of fishing gear and fishing for food out there in the woods?
Gotta start saving up,I'm probably gonna buy two. Thanks nutn. Also I might just get a code 4 as well because how thin it is.

What kind of tool do i need to switch the pocket clip over? it doesn't appear to be a standard screwdriver, anyone know where i can one that small?

Waving a "BIG KNIFE" as a deterrant is plain foolish. If you pull a blade, you use it.
But if they run when you pull the knife, and you chase them so you can "use it", then you'll be charged with assault or murder.
oXObsidianXo +1
got all clip point plain edge voyagers. love them to death! literally if needed..
aluminum inset liners btw, not ss
The blade coating on my Recon model appeared "cheap" as it immediately started coming off like it was painted on.
Voyager or Spartan? Hmmmmm?
Please review the code 4 series as well !
he just did, check his channel
Do you have recommendation for a gutting knife plz reply
I always loved Tantos but was afraid to own more than a couple. Now that I have the edge pro and doing tantos are easy, their all I buy! I'm looking to getting the ex tanto voyager this weekend.
update, got the voyager tanto XL. Could not be happier. I got it for 50 bucks bran new in box. Hell of a knife!
I bought the 1200 grit edge pro stone, it really helps bring up the polish!
hmm well i only have up to 2500 or 3k grit never tried going higher becouse it wouldnt cut papper after that and i couldnt get it to pop hair after that ether, half my knives like my spyderco's i dont even use i just display, i also have kershaw, case, crkt, benchmade, gerber, etc list goes on
"I'd go with daddy bear... not Gargantuan bear in most situations."
by the way the "new" new voyagers don't have stainless steel liners any more, and don't need them. saves some weight!
He does he did a review on them
How do I get in touch with nutnfancy? Can you please review dragon skin body armor?
I like the classic throwback blue! Keep it in tnp!
Just got my voyager xl and me recon 1 tanto for my birthday =)
18:40 Espada gives Nutn a Southern Hickish dialect.
I thought the liners on the new Voyagers were aluminum. Not steel.
Hey nutn I was gonna get the recon 1 xl
That was until I saw the vaquero voyager
Thanks for the vid, keep up the great work
Nothin like a little TNP before bed! Cheers
Ummm....aluminum liners on the Voyagers, not steel
FWIW, the tanto flavors carry just a little easier in the pocket with their straight spines. Peace out.
Great video nutn!
