I had one as a loaner when my Bagger packed up and i loved it. Really fast bike with superb handling and the Boxer engine made it awesome coming out of the slower corners. Being naked keeps the top speeds down, wizz it up through the gears but soon have to slow it down to more normal speeds due to the wind pressure.I loved it. As a 2nd bike it would be excellent.
Great detailed review, no stupid music, no robotic voice, own a 2016 r1200r, great all around bike, took off the flyscreen for nice clean air, screen causes reflection and noise, hepco Becker c bow luggage, heated grips, cruise control, water and air cooled ,shaft drive ,shift assist, abs, esa, keyless ignition, traction control, rider modes, info modes, GPS prep, over 200 miles per tank, great handling, flickable, comfortable, its not a gold wing, its not a Harley, and its not a Ducati or Padilla, its a boxer motor than can do basically everything well!
Another fine review Mr TMF. I own one of these and I've put 18,000 miles on it in less than a year! in general riding I get over 50mpg on a more sedate touring ride 56-60 mpg is easily attainable which is mighty impressive in my opinion. I've sent you a personal message! cheers tony
Hi I've just bought one of these, upgraded my F700GS! You ask why would so one buy one of these instead of other bikes in the range, for me one of the most important factors was the riding position, I have carpal tunnel, and the position of the bars is great. Then you add in cruise control, lovely engine etc.... 😀Great videos keep them coming!
Great video. I have the 2015 version and still love it. Its just such a simple, reliable, easy bike to own. Highlights for me are the quickshft and cruise control. Also rider comfort.
I've got the 2016 model , they are a great all round bike , I thought after a few months that I wasent over excited by it but the more I think on it - it's just that it does everything at its ease , shaft drive is great too for lack of maintenance & keeping the rear very clean compared to chain & sprockets , gear shift assist eats up the rear tyre a bit quick due to faster acceleration , comfort is a big plus compared to any other bike in its class I think
Yeah I think we tend to forget that these BMWs just do the job well and we mistake that for being boring - in fact they are very good at the job for which they are intended. Thanks for watching - TMF
I've just bought the same bike but without ESA, this is my second bike, after doing direct access last year and buying a Crossrunner 800. A quick visit to my local Motorrad dealer and they had a pre reg bike in the showroom fitted with the comfort pack, which I traded up to immediately. Can't believe how easy the bike is to ride, it feels so light and manouverable, much more so than the Honda and really inspires confidence. The engine is peachy smooth and makes it easy to make relaxed progress just using the torque of the engine leaving you free to concentrate on the road and traffic.
citizenpmd56 I currently have a Crossrunner and have a test ride at the end of the month on the R1200R. Paid £10400 for my crossrunner and BMW are offering £6500 for it as trade in 😱
Go for it if the figures work for you. I have no regrets, I loved the Honda but this trumps it easily with monster torque and importantly the suspension, brakes and tyres are way better and make riding a doddle.
citizenpmd56 I did enjoy the test ride. Found it to be punchy in 2nd and 3rd. I loved the low down weight. The cross runner feels heavy fuelled up and the R1200r didn't. It's in for its service this Friday and I am having the Africa Twin DCT for the day. I really like the DCT and this could also be my next bike. I didn't really notice the electronic suspension when I rode the exclusive 1200?
The overtaking poke is immense on the BM , any gear will do !. I never tried the ESA model, I know people who have ridden both and say there's not much of a difference to notice especially for everyday riding. I'm not going back to chain drive any time soon, love the easy to clean shaft drive bike, no more dirty horrible oily chain to clean and lube. Plus, I reckon the BM looks fantastic !
Nice review, mate! I have a 2015 R1200R and to your point about riding it for hours; I have ridden mine for 10 hours straight and it's an amazing-feeling bike. I was surprised not to see your Nav V in the cradle on this bike too :)
Thanks Gavin - well this was a demo bike and the dealer hadn't fitted the Nav V (I know how that works anyway as it happens ;0) Cheers for stopping by - all the best - TMF
I think the R1200R is a massive unsung hero of BMW. You don't see many about but they are a fantastic bike, not as much grunt as some of the naked roadsters but still a great choice.
That's a Sport specced up to Exclusive. And here is a nice thing. The frame and handle bars and paralever are all the same as the GS so the stuff fits. Mine has GS bark busters to keep the hands out of the breeze and aux lights which really light up the road. Motorways are fine as get to speed, switch on cruise control and off you go, zero stress. Can't wait to try the new Dynamic Pro suspension settings on a 2017 version. The S1000R doesn't have hard luggage and needs Super Unleaded to run according to the handbook. Think lighter faster and little GS and it's about right for this bike. Nice review as always.
@@TheMissendenFlyer Yep, I agree you are costing me a fortune! Just bought one of these & a GL1800! Quick question please Andy, I have the BMW Motorrad Garmin SatNav fitted & wanted to add another switched USB port to the bike to charge a phone. Bought the QLite-Can interface from Nippy Norman then realised you can't use it if you have the satnav fitted! Any ideas?
Late to this one as well, TMF. I think that behind the Triumph Tiger Sport, this is possibly the best looking bike you've reviewed. BMW certainly did a very harmonious design on this one. Beautiful!
It is weird, although I often think I'm a little bit weirder in that respect than most. I don't like many fully faired bikes for some or other reason, and I really don't like riding bikes with clip-ons and the attendant kilometer wide steering circle. I think the combination of cramped, uncomfortable seating position, the poor low speed handling and the suicidal need for speed on sport bikes makes them a bit useless for me.
Hi mate, great review. I owned the R 1200 R for 8 months and put 10,000 miles on it during that time. I added an SC Project slip exhaust and it sounded amazing I have to say. Great all around bike but wasn't all that exciting to ride and when the Tuono Factory went on sale at my local Aprilia dealer I couldn't resist making the change. If I could have afforded to own both I would have kept the R 1200 R for sure. I averaged 52-55 mpg and about 225 miles/tank but that was mostly non city riding.
Sleepingdragon 1 I love the Tuono and thinking of trading it in when the 2017 arrives here in April. New Tuono has cruise control, TFT display, quick shift up and down, all things that will make it perfection on 2 wheels!
It's a lovely looking bike. Add a V4 and you've got my attention. The bikes a proper weapon, it ticks alot of boxes for me. It's capable of so much from a Sunday blast to a European tour or even a commute or a trip out to get some milk. The only thing that worries me and I maybe wide of the mark is tank range and high fuel consumption. Apart from those two negatives I'm sold.
Another great review, not sure I'd swap for my Speed Triple though. As you hinted the ST probably has more get up and go. One question, where was the tacho? I'm assuming the dial was speedo but could be wrong (failing eyesight probably!).
Hi mate! Just wanted to thank you for all all your interesting reviews. I own a BMW GS from 2009 and a new Bonneville T 120. I'm very fond of both brands and love the totally different characters of these two 2 cylinder bikes. The BMW R 1200 R Roadster could be an interesting alternative for me in future if one day I want to replace the GS. Enjoying also the nice british landscapes during your tours. Best greetings from Luxembourg - Romain
Just completed a 60 mile ride on the r12r, having it for a week as a loan bike whilst the GS is in for a service and having some other stuff done. Have to say, very surprised and very impressed. The motor seems smother than the GS, pulls quite strongly, (impressively so from mid range), handles nicely and is really good fun. The surprising aspect is that, once it picked up from 4K or so, it seemed to pull as quickly as the r1r, but had none of the downsides - manic motor, harsh vibes, aching wrists, aching bum. After the r1r it was great to be on this boxer. If I could justify having a second bike just now, this could be it. Much overlooked bike it seems.
As you know this is my bike! (Red and white sport.) I agree, a good all-rounder. My GS was a better tourer, but I always found the better protection meant I went (too) fast. On this one I tend to stick to 70 as more comfortable. You can change the display - go into "style" and you have a choice of 3. Nicely done yet again sir. Regards, Jon.
Great review. I've owned the 2016 R1200R Exclusive for 6 months and put on 11000 Kms and love it. Great for the daily commute, weekends away or even cross country. I test road the 2017 GS last week and have ordered one for my 3 month South Africa tour next year. The GS will handle the rough road conditions with the extra suspension travel and has a little more room for my luggage. I'll be keeping the R for the shorter trips, just love the boxer. Keep up the great reviews, cheers.
Personally like the idea of this bike, it's just nice to ride. Monsters like Super Duke, MT-10, S1000R can be intimidating yet this machine has enough go yet friendly pet. In love with boxer power plant, happy '07 GS owner
when you are coming into Cookham from Maidenhead there is a road on your right called Mill Lane right before the fork in Cookham that leads to the Thames. A few nice places down there to do your walk arounds. The green lanes around that area are some of my favorite memories of England for trail running.
Really, Green Lanes??? I need to check those out...I have a feeling they aren't there anymore but I will check....thanks for the intel WestOrange MC - where are you living now out of interest??
another cool review and bike, my type of bike. I'm too old to need that super sonic acceleration and speed and I avoid motorways wherever possible. I came over to Canada a year ago for 3-5 years and miss those nice windy roads and the fact you can take the bike out between Nov and March.
Thanks or the kind words - I was out on my bike for five hours yesterday in close to freezing temperatures....believe me it's not something I would choose to do!!! :0) Roll on spring eh!?
I brought this bike - great engine with Akra and sports seat - so lovely - for my 32.5 inseam - so practical and 0-100 and 1/4 mile times competes with all bikes including speed triple! - so it’s amazing - but it’s speciality is that it can cruise alone - or push it around in the bends quick - a good rider will keep up with the best on team streets . I love 3rd gear.....do it all!
You have neglected to mention why this bike is the sleeper int their model range. It takes the RT style hard bags, which converts this bike to a light weight tourer. My top case from my GS also fits easily. With the large screen it has replaced my GS for the hi way. Same electronics and convertebility makes it very much an all-rounder.
the r1200r is a really fun and not fully appreciated bike! it is pricey relative to its competition though such as the speed or street triple which also are fun roadsters. the rs has a longer wheelbase and different rake and trail i believe which is why it felt much more reluctant to change direction in my experience test riding these two bikes. i do prefer the look and fairing protection of the rs i only wish it had the chassis? of the r1200r and then maybe the rs would be perfect :)
Yes agreed - I was surprised just how different the handling characteristics of the tow machines are (given the similarities between them)....thanks for watching - TMF
I've done 16,000 miles on my 2015 1200R, including tours around Germany, down to Austria and Italy as well as Spain and Portugal. I think it's a great bike (previously did 18k on a K1600GT and still have an old R1100RT so my first naked since 1977!) and I much prefer it to any of the BMW fours. I've had both an S1000R and an XR loan bike whilst mine's been in for service and they are very buzzy and although great for a Sunday blast I find them very "busy" and quite annoying on longer runs. The R is a very easy bike to live with and I think the most fun of the boxer range.
Although the R1200RS is better protected by the fairing and windscreen, I prefer the handling of the R1200R and for protection and highway riding I installed a ZTechnik Z2355 VStream windscreen which is superb. Now I have a bike less tiring than the RS on long distance travel at highway speeds with a more up-right posture and lighter and better handling...
Agreed Rui - the R1200R handles in a much more sprightly manner than the RS - I guess it depends what you're after. I for one would have the R for Sunday blasts and the RS for cross-continental touring....Thanks for watching - TMF
Thanks very much. Good review. I own a GS like yours, an RT and a XR. Used to own an S1000R and I have ridden a RS quite a bit. I have never ridden the R, and have really wanted to, hence my interest in the review. A lighter and lower version of the GS, with narrower bars would make a fantastic all rounder/commuter. The Akro sounds good as well. The only downside it the ugly front. Thanks again. Rgds Glenn PS - I have lots of time in Trinidads and Tobagoes as well.
great review. I've got the sc project exhaust on mine and mostly ride in dynamic mode. surprises a lot of people how quick it is and the handling is superb. I've also got the taller sport seat on mine (there are 4 seat options) and that made it much more comfortable for me.
Great stuff TMF, I've always dismissed the 1200r in the past as pre 2016 the looks were so bland... Might give it a try as a loan bike next time my GS is in for a service. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for this review! I was hoping you would ride the R1200R, since I just bought one 2 months ago. I debated about the GS, but since I live in Florida, it's just too blasted hot most of the year to have a faired bike as your only M/C. Close call, though. Thanks again!
I bought a new F800gs last April. Have to say its a great fun bike, comfortable, superb on fuel and even the tiny screen is bearable. The big problem I have is under breaking. The noise takes a massive dive. Will probably lose a lot of money doing it, but I'm looking to change to one of these 1200r's, or the 1200gs. Don't really ride motorways, even if we go away on a trip. Gonna need to go try both I think. Thanks for the in depth review, appreciate it
Talk about serendipity TMF! I've been trawling TH-cam for the past couple of days for R1200R reviews as I've just ordered one without a test ride (no available demo at my local BMW dealer... only got to try the RS) and then you gift me with one of your splendid reviews... much obliged TMF, much obliged. BTW, was that a highly specced up Sport or a lightly specced Exclusive? I went the Exclusive route as the touring add-ons are more important to me.
Hi Onyeka - glad my timing worked for you and hope you like the bike, it does feel quite different to the RS I thought (more nimble) - nice bit of kit all the same - as all the BMW boxers are IMO. I don't honestly know which variant this was, I suspect it was an Exclusive as dealers usually tend yo have top of the range models as demo's.....enjoy your new bike! All the best - TMF
Really tossing up between this bike and the RS version. I like the protection offered by the fairing, and note your comments about its requirement for more man handling into bends. Sounds like the front end geometry is quite different between the two models. Thank you for a great review, as usual touching on all the pertinent points. Cheers from Down Under.
Another good review and just letting you know that your channel was the first placed I searched as I am thinking about purchasing one when I upgrade one of my bikes very soon.I have never owned a beamer or a shaft driven motorcycle so it will be a new experience for me mind you I will still have two chain driven motorcycles and a belt driven one .Cheers Chips.
Great review. your bike collection is magnificent and something to aspire for. Btw loving the passenger seat on the naked bmw..would like to see passenger seats on Monsters too.
Hi TMF Thank you for your honest review. I'm pleased you tried this model because I own one and having tried all the other bikes in the BMW range found it to be one of the best real World bikes they offer. I believe the main reason why the bike seems bland is the standard exhaust. Fitting the Akrapovic, minus the baffle, combined with the Dynamic performance mode, cured that and never failed to put a smile on my face! This bike provides more than enough performance for safe quick overtakes and the semi-automatic suspension keeps the ride stable and comfortable. I have used it for Sunday morning blasts on A and B roads, 80 mile commuting and not once have I ever been bored with it. The running costs are reasonable with typically late 50mpg helping. Having previously owned a number of BMW GS Adventure bikes, mainly for their road presence, I decided to improve the road presence of the R1200R LC and fitted the BMW LEDs to Krauser engine protection bars. This made a big difference as I found cars waited for me at junctions and moved over on the motorway to let me through. In short, after nearly a year, it is a hard bike to replace!
Thanks for your feedback Guy - glad you're getting on well with the bike...it's great when you know you've found the "right one" isn't it (I'm a bit like that with my GS)....cheers for watching and for stopping by - all the best - TMF
I have the same bike\year fully loaded and it puts my other 18 GSXS to shame in all aspects of riding. The GSXs is faster WOT and that's about it. I've see no reason to trade up to the 1250 either. The bike is so confidence inspiring until the electronics are turned off that is. It then slips and slides with frequent front wheel action and one needs to be focused. After 45k it remains my favourite ride.
Nice review TheMissendenFlyer , well structured thx - I rode the R12R nearly 10 years ago and at the time I though "wow.. almost perfect" - since then I got into touring riding with the dual adv bikes.. I wonder what I'd happen if I rode this one again... drop my Caponord Rally? who knows..
Fascinating to watch your review or the R1200R and compare it to my test ride last Friday on the new r1250R... Have you tested this amazing bike yet? Looking forward to your review in due course... I wonder if you will be as excitable as me! Cheers...
@@TheMissendenFlyer Sounds good... What gets me is why it feels so much faster than the NEW R1250GS, yet it's weight is only 10kg less... see what you think next week, some sort of wizardry going on, looking forward to comparing notes once you post your review. Cheers
In this lockdown period I have re-watched this a couple of times - I'd like to downsize from my Caponord and this R has always been in my mind...BUT I'm not sure about weight and comfort.. however this engine is ace!! cheerio
I have the 2015 lc model and must say that the roadster is a great all-rounder. This may put some people off saying the bike is uninspiring ; it is not a beast and not meant to be, but it will certainly put a smile on your face when you turn the throttle up or ride the twisties. True, it is not a light-weight naked but a roadster. Despite the weight it handles remarkably well. I am 5ˋ8 and feel very comfortable, however, if you are tall , you may feel cramped. Wish the community well through this crisis and ,of course, thank you tony for your time and effort for another great video. Big fan .
Great bike review...as usual. You should try to get a hold of an R1200GS . Since I also have a 2014 model, I'd be interested in hearing your comment's on the 2017 model. It has all of the upgrades that you have mentioned regarding all of the other R1200's. Unfortunately I can't take a test drive myself....I'm in Northern Ontario in Canada....8 feet of snow on my front lawn. No biking for me until late April . Cheers Rick
Thanks for this. I have been very tempted by it and your review concurs with my thoughts. Any chance of a short review comparing your views of all the BMW bikes and ranking them? I think we all know the obvious winner but still interesting nonetheless!
This R1200R was the first BMW boxer I had a testdrive on and I instantly fell in love with it. It's a fantastic machine with great handling. First thing I thought within a minute was: I must have one no matter what it takes. After coming a bit back to earth I choose the R1200GS keeping in mind that I have to carry the missis 🙄 on the back on the longer tours. It would be my second (first) bike next to the GS.............
I would have stuck the missus on the back of the R1200R if I'd felt that way...but then I wear the trousers in my house! [and there is precisely zero chance of my Mrs ever seeing this comment....luckily]....
I owned the olded aircooled version, the best boxer to put on a trailer behind a car, drive to the Alps or Pyrenees. Unfortunately, no mountains in Amsterdam, for long distance travelling and then going for mountain riding, nothing beats the trusted GS (although I did 1200km a day easily). Tip: The higher seat makes it less up-right and a bit more sporty ride.
Yep, like the nineT (Roadster, not the Scrambler), beautiful bike. The arguably most beautiful aircooled would be the HP2 Sport. But after owning a Lc GS and the GsA, the LC engine is definitely a smoother engine, with (only) 15 ponies more. Wish they could make one with 150+ hp, because the KTM's and Ducs are more exciting to ride. When is the review of these bikes coming TMF?
Have you ever ridden any of the KTM's? Ive got the superduke GT and would love to watch you review this beast. Loving the videos keep them coming. Cheers
Hello ! First of all , nice review , really enjoyed the whole vid! The design on this bike is absolutely stunning! I'm up for a new bike in the next year and I'm thinking of bying a monster 821/ r1200r / street or speed triple . Do you have any suggestions ? Pros/cons between them? Mostly want the bike for work (in town riding) plus a few trips on the weekends! Thanks in advance!
I've loved all the boxers I've owned and I love my present Monster 1200R too. But I managed to get a sit on a silver Street Triple "795" yesterday. And all I could think of, was that, the TMF 'is' going to buy one of these! ;-D
Yeah, I was pretty shocked (for embargo reasons) too - first time I can remember sitting on a bike that hasn't been officially launched / the journalist haven't even sat on yet! It was at The Great American Motorcycle Show, here in Atlanta, Georgia. They also unveiled the Bobber - official 'Brutal Beauty' launch evening for ATL is Tue evening - quite some time after the UK - which I'll be going to as well. I must say, I was pretty taken with the Bobber! Anyway the new Street Triple shown had already done a burn out and was nearly through the rear rubber! And the news is good IMHO. The matt silver of the RS looks good (lightly lacquered I’d say) in the flesh. There was really decent travel and damping in that rear shock and of course it felt v-twin thin and 650 cc light. In short, they’ve got it right. The clocks look nice, the seat is roomy and the bars fall easily to… well, you know. The seat height is very tall. Maybe as tall as my M1200R? Although the suspension sinks much more than my Ducati. The LRH kit might prove popular. I took some pics if you want to ping me a message. Anyway - s'gorgeous - you'll buy one! ;-D
Yes 765. Everyone I spoke to on Saturday kept calling it the '800' ST-RS, so it kinda stuck in my head. But it's much closer to 750 of course. When I was a younger guy I always thought the ultimate road bike would be a 750, tuned for torque, that made about 125 hp and was 185 kg wet. It might have taken longer to develop bikes like that than I'd of thought, but at least they're here now! The Z900 announced on monkey spanker weekly today looks like it's closest competitor. But I'd take a Triumph triple all day long for my personal tastes. I may have got the cc wrong, but I'm 'not' wrong about you buying one matey! ;-D
Again an excellent review tested one of these at the weekend and fell in love with it, which I didn't think I would, I had been looking at Tracer GT and the Tiger XRT (current have a tiger XRT the old one). So add a few modes and I think I might ( for me ) have found my perfect bike. I guess in a few years I will have to grow up to the GS, we will see.
@@TheMissendenFlyer 6 months on and this bike is fantastic, all the weight is at the bottom making it so easy to get through traffic, it comfortable quick enough for me and it handles like it's on rails. I can't believe I turned my nose up at the boxer engine for so long. I had up until the 1200r had been changing my bike about every two years or so I don't think I will be letting this one go anytime soon, it would have to be a bloody good bike to get me to swop
I think that is one extremely excellent motorcycle! I suspect I would prefer the RS version because I like fairings and a more forward riding position. I'm not going to test ride them because I can't afford it right now. I love boxer BMWs. Lovely low CoG with such user friendly power. They make such great all-round bikes as you say. Not as powerful as a good multi like the speed triple, but plenty enough power as far as I am concerned. Robert Pirsig rode a BMW in his book "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance". That is recommendation enough for me :)
I agree with you on the Boxer Brighton dude, so much to be said for low COG if you can't have "really light" instead.....and as you say, 125hp isn't too shabby......
...never been to Pennsylvania even though I live 2 miles from where Sir William Penn lived! ....and the local village of "Penn" is named after him....even has a pub made with the same timbers as the Mayflower!! Useless fact for you.... ;0)
Not useless at all, that's quite interesting in fact! The state capitol building in Harrisburg (which is the city where I work) is the most ornate in the country compared to the other 49, and is loaded with beautiful artwork and design. His "holy experiment" quote is engraved in the rotunda ceiling. It truly is a magnificent building. I'd love to visit that pub! I've not been to the UK yet, went to Rome for two weeks for work which wasn't too awful. ;) Need to make another trip across the puddle. Best!
I've been watching quite a few reviews on the various models of Boxer BMW's and amongst all the facts and figures, such as BHP an Torque we get seat height and weight which, especially as a shorter rider, is very important. It then occurred to me that what would be really helpful would be a measurement for centre of gravity. The weight is just one aspect but I would suggest the centre of gravity is at least as, if not, more important. I appreciate some reviewers bother to mention it, but a figure might help. Anyway, not a complaint regarding your reviews, just wanted to get it off my chest.
A fair assessment MF. I had a go on a 2016 model last year and although it was a nice bike to ride and seemed both smoother and more immediate than the GS it ultimately didn't float my boat -when I got back on the GS after the test ride the decision to keep the GS was an easy one to make for me due to the better weather protection. I also noticed that due to its presence the car drivers tended to see me on the GS but pull out on me on the R, especially in town. The R is still a nice bike though and anyone looking for a naked bike should consider a test ride. It's also quite a bit cheaper than the other 1200 boxers which is another factor to consider. Cheers Ade.
Yes I agree 100% Ade - I'd take the GS over the R for similar reasons (plus I just like the look of the GS compared to the R) - thanks for watching as ever - TMF
Another great review TMF. Thanks! Pleasantly surprised by the small change to your normal somewhat patronising sounding catch phrase. ;) Anyway, quick question, do you find the navigation wheel gets in the way of using the indicators, or do you just get used to it?
You just get used to it - can I refer you to this video th-cam.com/video/6Jc4mEwF7jU/w-d-xo.html for the latest thoughts on my patronising catch phrase? Cheers - TMF
Already watched it! ;-) I really am a big fan. Even watched some of your plane vlogs. Very impressive skills! Unfortunately I still hate "hi kids", much prefer the catch phrase, "hi folks". It's my problem I know... The only way I've managed to get used to it, is that I imagine you have kids, and you're making a video for them, and I'm lucky enough to get to watch it too... Thanks for taking the time to read and reply to my comment. Looking forward to your next vid, all bar the first few seconds. ;-)
It's my time to renew my bike, so the only models on the market today that I really like is the 2017 XJR1300 and the R1200R the only thing that stops me from the BMW is price and costs in maintenance, the reliability that everyone talks about the Bavarian electronic failures on its vehicles, and of course the options that you have to add to it which increase its price. But is a lovely bike, love the design and looks, the XJR is also another diamond roadster to be taken in consideration, any feedback you can share ??
Well I've not ridden the XJR so I can't really comment - if it were me chosing between the two I'd be very keen to ride both, on looks alone the XJR would win for me (both great bikes I'm sure though)....
Thanks for the review TMF. Like the shaft drive, bullet proof engine, she's a bit bulky perhaps for a fun naked. Styling wise, as always with BMW is very Marmite they arent always the most attractive bikes, unlike Italian bikes for example. Not quite sure what that bike is best put to use at. The s1000r would get my money over that I think. Ive ridden the Speed and the s1000r has the Triumph licked. Having ridden it what application is it best suited to TMF? All rounder, tourer? Obviously anyone who buys one would be happy, after personal preference it's still a quality product. Ride safe must be a bit chilly.
+Sleepingdragon 1 Yeah I'm with you on that - to my mind this is a great all rounder or commuter....usual BMW quality, as you say any owner wouldn't be disappointed....
Yes I know exactly what you mean - Nothing wrong with the bike at all, just nothing about it particularly floated my boat either...good to hear from you again! All the best - TMF
I see you've ridden the S1000R and this R1200R. I'm close to purchasing one or the other. Which would you recommend for long-day (or multi day) mountain twisties runs at an aggressive pace? I don't commute.
Really excellent review MF - lots of useful continuous commentary and all of it real-world relevant. I am contemplating one here in Aus; it is a low-miler used example but has loads of extras including full hard-luggage and am hoping it will serve as a weekend-away machine for myself and the missus. Thanks for the great review.
another great review you ar always fair.i noticed on the r1200r there is no mud or rain deflector . like on gs.is that an option or even needed? none on rs either? keep up the awsome reviews! !!
I really dislike the look of that screen, as though it's just been taped on. I like the front end of the s1000rs, but I hate the split lights. I don't know why manufacturers keep splitting headlights, it just looks rubbish when only one of them is on. I'd love to see something between them, with a bit more fairing on the front than this, but with this one's light and the engine too - got to love the boxer. Lovely noise, particularly with the quickshifter when shifting up.
I'm completely with you on the split light thing Matt - if you must have two then go the Yamaha/Triumph route and at least make them symmetrical (and please make sure they both come on all the time rather than just one!)....
Another great review thank you. I am aware someone has asked you to test ride an f800 GS, which would be good to see. I appreciate the time it takes but if you could, would you do a test on the f800 GT as well as I am considering both of these machines. Many thanks.
Hehe, I love how you guys assume I can just go and ride any bike - I'd love too!! If I can I'll do the reviews, but at the moment I don't have access to those machines alas - stay tuned though 'cos you never know! Thanks for watching, all the best - TMF
Thanks Stu - to be fair the local dealer does let me ride and review the bikes, but they don't always have demos for all the range available....the F800's being cases in point. I will mention it to them when next we speak and maybe there's something I can do in future....cheers again for your kind words - TMF
Hi TMF, Great review as usual, I bought one of these on the back of this review and others, a Feb 2017 bike with all the packs but the previous red framed model with a very clunky gearbox (1400 miles on the clock). Is your GS clunky (sometimes a c,c,c,clunk) from neutral to first and still noisy up to 3rd? Mine sounds embarrassing. When it's cold, neutral to first is silent. Also on start up at any temperature, it rattles for a second or so. Sounds like hydraulic tappets filling, but not nice! Should I just ignore this stuff and put my faith in BMW, and accept it's normal?
Yes my GS is a bit clunky (as you'll hear in my videos) - I think it's all part of the "character"! Don't like the sound of the rattling.....maybe get that looked at?
Spoke to BMW today. The rattling is the cam chain tensioner pressuring up and is perfectly normal, apparently they all do it. They also said it's called a 'crash' gearbox for a reason and the 2017one is much improved. I'll stop worrying and just enjoy the bike. She went in to BMW for a RH front fork oil seal leak and they replaced the whole leg. He said if there were any noise or gearbox issues on the test ride they would have told me. I think they would have liked the warranty work. My first ride was from Bournemouth to Stamford in Lincolnshire (180 miles, unless you get lost like me, 200 miles) and I could have done it again without stopping. What a great bike! I love it! The wind takes all the weight off my wrists and shoulders which makes it really comfortable for me. Mine's doing 56mpg and I don't hang about. I'm looking at the Shad luggage. Any opinions on that? Apparently they make the OEM BMW luggage.
Ok looking bike I got the impression it didn't set your soul alight ha! You rode both the S1000r and rr? How have I missed that! do you have the reviews on your channel?
You're right - it's not a bike I personally would rush out and own, but then I'm very happy wit the bikes I do have for the purposes for which I bought them. I haven't ridden the RR (yet) and did ride the S1000R a year or two back - no video though as my camera failed! Great bike though....just those darned squinty lights again!
TheMissendenFlyer ha yes it is an acquired taste, I actually like its jekyll and hyde face, think it reflects the bike's persona. If you don't mind and can stretch your memory back was there any stand out pro and cons from your test ride of the S1000r?
Nothing not to like (except the squint) - smooooth, comfy, fast, very nice all round if you can get on with the looks...in fact may be a bit too good (in a clinical soul-less sort of way if that makes sense)....that's what I recall anyway....that and the effin camera not working...
Low centre of gravity and low seat height! Sounds like a bike I could handle being vertically challenged. Shame I'm a bit financially challenged too at the mo. I will put it down as a contender for the future tho.
Love your reviews and like many here, the R1200R is on my short list. However, I just tested the Duc MS 950, and I have to say, I'm really torn between these two. I know the bikes have very different character, but I've got 2 Ducatis now (Scrambler, Diavel Carbon), love the Ducati feel, and I'm looking for a great all-rounder that can handle light touring as well. Help!!
Hi, great review, well done! Is it right that GB is biker`s heaven because of a much better acceptance, consideration and better traffic regulations especially for bikers?
....err, not sure where you heard that, I would say not right! Bikers are not really seen in a positive light here and the authorities don't make any special arrangements for them....bicycle's and cars get all the help here - motorcycles just have to get on with it in their world....
that`s what I`ve heard from bikers visiting GB or read in forums - but reading your response it seems to be similar nearly everywhere - enjoy your riding :)
Thanks for watching and for stopping by! All the best - TMF
Nice post, I am now the proud owner of the R1150r 80th anniversary No 1217 of 2003 and I love it....
Great 👍
Another fine review Mr TMF.
I own one of these and I've put 18,000 miles on it in less than a year!
in general riding I get over 50mpg on a more sedate touring ride 56-60 mpg is easily attainable which is mighty impressive in my opinion.
I've sent you a personal message!
cheers
tony
I haven't owned a BMW for 20 years or more, i'd love one of these. Great review, bloody narrow roads in the UK though!
Fair point nobbs67 - thanks for watching and congratulations on the new bike...all the best - TMF
Great video. I have the 2015 version and still love it. Its just such a simple, reliable, easy bike to own. Highlights for me are the quickshft and cruise control. Also rider comfort.
Yes the quickshift works a treat on the R doesn't it...great fun. Thanks for watching and for the kind words - TMF
It does look fantastic in that Cordoba blue :)
Marlow is a splendid little town, nice scenery!
Marlow is lovely too ;0)
It looks so comfortable and capable for a wide range of riding circumstances. I would love one if I had the money 💵
You don't see many about but they are a fantastic bike, not as much grunt as some of the naked roadsters but still a great choice.
birdoneword acceleration is 0-60 in 2.8" so up there with the quickest.
Yeah, I guess it's just not that glamorous or doesn't have a stand-out headline to make everyone focus on it...certainly slipped under my radar....
Bobby Fett I meant horse power, both the Ducati monster and speed triple have more.
Thanks for the insight TheCcponyboy...and I agree with your conclusion. Thanks for watching and for stopping by - TMF
Why is it that anytime you do a bike review I end up on the manufactures website looking at it.
As long as it's only that and not at the dealers with your wallet open!
I already have my eye on the R 1200 RT and the K 1600 GT/L. Just no funds to buy anything.
Me,too! LOL
Hoping to get one of these next year.
Me too!
Beautiful!
Funny how people’s taste vary isn’t it - give me a panigale to look at any day!
Nice one Pete - and I'm 100% with you on the "great all rounder but not that exciting" summary....
PistolPete63 Do ya like your Tuono Pete? I'm looking at ownership closely.
I'm assuming the dial was speedo but could be wrong (failing eyesight probably!).
this is one of the best review i have seen in my life, brilliant! thanks for all of these details.
Thank you very much!
Thank you for your kind words Romain, good to know you're out there!
+samsara Nice one! Thanks for watching and for stopping by - all the best- TMF
Thanks Jon - yes I did play with the styles on the display but forgot to mention it on my review - oops!
I love the R1200 R. If I didn't already have a GS Adventure and a Scrambler X I'd have one
Go on, you can't have too many bikes can you?? ;0)
Thank you Trev, sounds like a great trip next year.....enjoy the GS (another fabulous boxer based machine!)
nice flex
You make really very good reviews of the current BMW Motorcycles ... Great!
Thank you!
Just got myself a 2006 one... what a machine!
Congratulations Duncan and enjoy!
Thanks for watching and for stopping by! All the best - TMF
+Joe Maracic Nice one Joe - cheers....
As per normal another quality review.Really looking forward to the MT10 review when you get the chance.
Me too JayJay - I'm working on it!
the r1200r is a really fun and not fully appreciated bike! it is pricey relative to its competition though such as the speed or street triple which also are fun roadsters. the rs has a longer wheelbase and different rake and trail i believe which is why it felt much more reluctant to change direction in my experience test riding these two bikes. i do prefer the look and fairing protection of the rs i only wish it had the chassis? of the r1200r and then maybe the rs would be perfect :)
Rgds
Glenn
PS - I have lots of time in Trinidads and Tobagoes as well.
Good man....how I miss our TB-10 :0(
great review. I've got the sc project exhaust on mine and mostly ride in dynamic mode. surprises a lot of people how quick it is and the handling is superb. I've also got the taller sport seat on mine (there are 4 seat options) and that made it much more comfortable for me.
Nice one Mark - this is definitely the sprightliest of all the boxer BMW's I've ridden....nice machine...thanks for watching - TMF
Another great review, thank you. I especially enjoy seeing the beautiful English countryside. Cheers!
Thank you Charles - lot's more "in the can" - stay tuned!
Great stuff TMF, I've always dismissed the 1200r in the past as pre 2016 the looks were so bland... Might give it a try as a loan bike next time my GS is in for a service. Keep up the good work!
Yeah it's worth a go David, nice bike all round....
Thanks for this review! I was hoping you would ride the R1200R, since I just bought one 2 months ago. I debated about the GS, but since I live in Florida, it's just too blasted hot most of the year to have a faired bike as your only M/C. Close call, though. Thanks again!
"Too hot" - what a wonderful concept (I've been on a bike for 5 hours today and it's not been above 1 degree C...bbrrggghhhh)
Thanks for the in depth review, appreciate it
Apologies for the predictive text mistakes. Wrote that on my phone
I have a g310r and that just looks like the big version of it and I love it
Zach McKinney also own a g310r and also love it 😊
Really tossing up between this bike and the RS version. I like the protection offered by the fairing, and note your comments about its requirement for more man handling into bends. Sounds like the front end geometry is quite different between the two models. Thank you for a great review, as usual touching on all the pertinent points. Cheers from Down Under.
Thank you for watching, glad you found it of interest! All the best - TMF
Thanks for watching and stopping by chips, appreciate the kind comments - good luck in the search for your new bike, all the best TMF
Great review. your bike collection is magnificent and something to aspire for. Btw loving the passenger seat on the naked bmw..would like to see passenger seats on Monsters too.
Thanks again - glad you've found my efforts of interest :0) All the best - TMF
Hi TMF
Thank you for your honest review.
I had one of these for a year, and whilst it is brilliant in lots of ways I just found it a little 'vanilla' that said, I do miss it.
Nice review TheMissendenFlyer , well structured thx - I rode the R12R nearly 10 years ago and at the time I though "wow.. almost perfect" - since then I got into touring riding with the dual adv bikes.. I wonder what I'd happen if I rode this one again... drop my Caponord Rally? who knows..
Give it a try and see what you think???
Hi will mate, for sure it deserves it - at the moment I carry on enjoying the south west twisties on the aprilia caponord
Nice looking bike and a fair review can't say anymore than that.
Cheers Norrie - appreciate you watching and stopping by - TMF
i like the flat twin boxer engine... i don t like the front look of the bike. but i like the review.
great job!
cheers Tom
Thank you Tom - good to hear from you again.....TMF
Fascinating to watch your review or the R1200R and compare it to my test ride last Friday on the new r1250R... Have you tested this amazing bike yet? Looking forward to your review in due course... I wonder if you will be as excitable as me! Cheers...
Not yet - due to ride it next week I think!
@@TheMissendenFlyer Sounds good... What gets me is why it feels so much faster than the NEW R1250GS, yet it's weight is only 10kg less... see what you think next week, some sort of wizardry going on, looking forward to comparing notes once you post your review. Cheers
In this lockdown period I have re-watched this a couple of times - I'd like to downsize from my Caponord and this R has always been in my mind...BUT I'm not sure about weight and comfort.. however this engine is ace!! cheerio
Have no fear on either! Weight is low and comfort is high!
Big fan .
Btw I ended up with this bike eventually... 😂
Great video mate. This is a great all round bike. Fast and comfortable.
+gtx332 Thanks...and agreed!
This sabbatical is great. Long may it continue TMF!
I agree 100% NilSatis No9 :0) Though I suspect at some point it will have to end alas.....not yet for a few months at least though!
You always have the best reviews. Would like to know which one do you preferred and why. The R1200R or the R1200RS? Thanks.
I prefer the RS - just on looks grounds.....
I've been riding a bmw on my holidays today in gran canaria. Absolutely splendid roads and scenery. Shame about the standard of driving.
Aww lucky you - I've ridden for 5 hours in freezing fog here today....not fun at all!
Cheers Rick
...don't much like the sound of 8 foot of snow! Would make for a fun video though....
Thanks for this. I have been very tempted by it and your review concurs with my thoughts. Any chance of a short review comparing your views of all the BMW bikes and ranking them? I think we all know the obvious winner but still interesting nonetheless!
Mmm, hadn't thought of that.....
Very good review! I always liked the Roadster bike! I'm looking at those myself!!
+Dona_Mane Thank you Dona_Mane - glad it was of interest :0)
It may be light for a boxer engined bike but it seems a hefty beast compared with most naked competitors (tuono and street triple come to mind).
For sure, it's not in Street Triple territory - it's more of a competitor for the Speed Triple I would say....thanks for watching - TMF
Tip: The higher seat makes it less up-right and a bit more sporty ride.
...yeah I'm with you on that - it's the GS for me too :0)
...yeah they do seem to have a bit of a cult status don't they...
Very nice review. Another great BMW motorbike!
Thanks Antonio...
Great review Mr Flyer, not too sure on the screen headlight front end
Yes agreed, I think I would look to remove that too....
Thanks for the great video review. Did you find the bike to be a bit buzzy when pushing the rev range?
No, can't say that I did....
Have you ever ridden any of the KTM's? Ive got the superduke GT and would love to watch you review this beast. Loving the videos keep them coming. Cheers
Funny you should say that Robbie - I'll be reviewing the Superduke GT and Superadventure in the next couple of weeks....stay tuned!
Get a Street Triple ;0)
Yeah i figured! Just saw a '15 model returning from work yesterday and had a chat with the owner . Amaazing bike . Will do so ! Tyvm !
I've loved all the boxers I've owned and I love my present Monster 1200R too. But I managed to get a sit on a silver Street Triple "795" yesterday. And all I could think of, was that, the TMF 'is' going to buy one of these! ;-D
Where was that Richard? I've not even seen the 765 yet let alone that one ;0P
Anyway - s'gorgeous - you'll buy one! ;-D
Good stuff Richard - I assume you mean 765 not "795"??
I may have got the cc wrong, but I'm 'not' wrong about you buying one matey! ;-D
...we'll see! ;0)
Again an excellent review tested one of these at the weekend and fell in love with it, which I didn't think I would, I had been looking at Tracer GT and the Tiger XRT (current have a tiger XRT the old one). So add a few modes and I think I might ( for me ) have found my perfect bike. I guess in a few years I will have to grow up to the GS, we will see.
...every one does eventually! In the meantime...enjoy!
Georgeous bike. Beautiful ride, is that close to Missendon?
+rmteflonpenguin Yes not too far away, within 10 miles or so.....
Excellent review, I'm a huge fan of these bikes - need to take one for a spin. Big fan from the States, keep it up! :-]
Thanks Siper2 - where in the States are you?? (I love the internet....)
Central Pennsylvania, though I'm originally from New Hampshire. You're welcome!
...never been to Pennsylvania even though I live 2 miles from where Sir William Penn lived! ....and the local village of "Penn" is named after him....even has a pub made with the same timbers as the Mayflower!!
Best!
Yes Rome is amazing, Penn in Buckinghamshire less so..... :0)
Yes very good point - wouldn't it be great if there was a standard "Centre of gravity height" spec all manufacturers used....
Looking forward to your next vid, all bar the first few seconds. ;-)
Great review, first time on your channel, thanks!
Thanks for watching and stopping by Claire - appreciate the kind comment!
A guy I ride with has one of these and loves it. I've ridden it briefly and it's a very capable bike, however just found it immensely 'vanilla'
You can't go wrong with either!
@@TheMissendenFlyer thanks! Seemed you felt the r1200r was a bit boring
@@Longpath1050 - i'd miss the no rear wheel mudguard
Really excellent review MF - lots of useful continuous commentary and all of it real-world relevant. I am contemplating one here in Aus; it is a low-miler used example but has loads of extras including full hard-luggage and am hoping it will serve as a weekend-away machine for myself and the missus. Thanks for the great review.
You're welcome Auscurrymaster (mine's a Balti!)....sounds like you've found yourself a good bike there....enjoy - TMF
another great review you ar always fair.i noticed on the r1200r there is no mud or rain deflector . like on gs.is that an option or even needed? none on rs either? keep up the awsome reviews! !!
I imagine it probably would need one - bound to be available after market...
A friend of mine keeps recommending these to me (and he works for a BMW dealer :D )
Nice review
Thanks...
More mudguarding would be appreciated. Lovely looking.
Probably the last good looking naked BMW
Its a shame the R1200R is often overlooked, I rode it and thought it was a fantastic bike!!
SO many good bikes out there now Neil eh? We're all spoilt for choice!
We are indeed!
Love the rasp of the R1200!
Me too...
Great review. Do you think this is a bit too much for a first step up from a 125? I want it
Yes, I think it probably is....
my dream is to be able to pilot a machine like this!
Your doing BMW a big favour, they should be throwing the bikes at you lol. You do such a great job of reviewing them.
Thanks Stu - to be fair the local dealer does let me ride and review the bikes, but they don't always have demos for all the range available....the F800's being cases in point. I will mention it to them when next we speak and maybe there's something I can do in future....cheers again for your kind words - TMF
If you can great, if not no problem, Thanks for responding.
Very Good and detailed review !
thank you louis2m....
Sexy looking bike! Loving these bike reviews! Keep them coming! Great video :D
Will do Cameron - cheers - TMF
I really like your review on the motorcycle but curious to know how does it work with at least 15 mile per hour cross winds and rain?
15mph cross wind wouldn't be an issue I wouldn't think - not having big fairings and the like is an advantage in this regard....
Low centre of gravity and low seat height! Sounds like a bike I could handle being vertically challenged. Shame I'm a bit financially challenged too at the mo. I will put it down as a contender for the future tho.
Yes an easy bike for the shorty to deal with (me included)!
Help!!
as always your review are awesome, keep ding it
Thanks Omar - will do!
