Also for the killer croc section you're supposed to utilize the Line Launcher you just received... No sound on the platforms if you're not touching the platforms ya know, another tip for Ivy this time I suggest you just spam batarangs the whole time rather than waiting for her pod to open, they all do damage the pod being open is just a critical strike.

Fantastic game that I still go back to from time to time. Even beyond the Batman mythos, it's got an undeniable vibe that's haunting and compeling. It's not really a horror game, but the atmosphere is still there. Arkham games in my opinion have excellent worldbuilding.
The game's most subtle strength is the pacing in my eyes. The only major weakpoint (besides hindsight making the combat and stealth seem more stiff compared to later games) is the boss fights and the finale in general feeling rushed overall. Complaints aside, this game is special to me and I still find things to love about it today.

This game is such a good example of how a restricted world can help elevate it's atmosphere. In comparison to its sequel Asylum is almost claustrophobic, you're stuck in Arkham with no real backup, if you get into trouble you can't just grapple to the top of a building and leave like in City's open world areas. Even Asylum's outside areas are still very narrow and don't really facilitate retreat.

It truly was a revelation in terms of games both licensed and originals. Made superb use of the prebuilt world by involving the antagonists people wanted to see and made it look just as grimy as it was imagined, and found a way to let us portray Batman's close combat skills and tools in a way that made playing the game fun AND "just like the comics". It was the best way video games had let us pretend to be Batman at the time, and I have to respect that... no matter what came later.

I've 100% this game multiple times. The story, graphics, and combat all are still really solid all these years later. The one thing I really noticed though coming back to it was that the combat isn't quite as smooth and responsive as the newer games. It doesn't make the game much harder when just trying to finish the story, but it does make getting perfect combos in the challenge maps annoying when sometimes Batman won't lock onto the intended enemy or misses a counter because he randomly started doing a long, uninterruptible animation. Fighting the slightly stiff controls is really the only negative thing about this game. I like how it's a shorter game too. Going for 100% doesn't feel like a monotonous grind like the newer games can.

I watched a recent stream playthrough of Arkham Asylum, and yea, it still holds up great. I think the open-world aspects of the later games in the series are a doulbe-edged sword: sure you get more to explore, and gliding over Gotham is neat, but you also get a lot of repetivive empty space, and having everything spread out makes gathering collectibles even more of a chore.

You even had easy to find maps that would mark all the collectibles, contrasted against later games' interrogation system which needed you to find informants in the city bit by bit.

Graphically speaking, I think Arkham Asylum shows its age. I will defend Return to Arkham in that sense because I do believe that it looks better by comparison.
Gameplay wise, Arkham Asylum has aged very well. It took me years to overcome my fear of Scarecrow's segments and Killer Croc's lair, and I never get bored playing this game.
If only we could get games for more DC characters that took example from this game

Personally I would say Arkham asylum is my second favorite game in the series. Those who say it has “aged poorly” simply have no clue what they’re talking about. The only thing is that the bosses, combat and predator of the other games are more advanced obviously as it is an ever expanding series, but compared to 99.999% of games Arkham asylum has better combat story atmosphere and moment to moment gameplay than most games ever

"Repetetive" he says, yet I played Arkham 2 times this year (had to get achievements I missed) and then beat City, Origins and Knight right after and I still want more.

I actually always preferred asylum over city.
I like the pacing much better and the Metroidvania style where you discover a relative limited area but backtrack a lot when getting new items. Also how the asylum changes over the course of the game was really cool. The audio tapes you can find, especially those of Harley Quinn were the cherry on top.
City to me is just bigger and more but the pacing suffers from it and to me it gets more tedious and the story isn't that well constructed.
Still liked city (who doesn't) but it was always 2nd place.

As a game, yes Arkham Asylum definitely holds up. Though if you've played all the Batman: Arkham games regularly, the limited combat skills and movement can take some getting used to. And the non-Scarecrow bosses still aren't that great.

I always liked Asylum more than the rest of the game's rocksteady made. I love the atmosphere and it was fun walking around and collecting the collectables. I never liked the decision to make the rest open world but it was the most logical thing to do. After Asylum I love Origins the main story felt much better for me shame the boss fights in all the games were a little lackluster.

Wait 10:28 "aged" is definitely the wrong word here, it sucked back then, and it feels exactly the same now, has nothing to do with age it was just a straight up bad way to end the game even in 2009

Outside of mechanics, I think it's also just a letdown of the appeal of Joker's character and what you can do with him. I don't think "Joker Hulk" was a brawl anyone ever wanted (allthough funnily enough, this was a concept used in The Batman 2004 show. Funny coincidence).
City got this aspect right in contrast where he works behind the scenes. Because his manipulation and intellect is his greatest strength, even when he's on death's door.

Really wish I enjoyed the combat as much as everyone else. The exploration, stealth and story are amazing but I actively avoid the rock-paper-scissors fighting as much as possible when I replay this. I blame every other third person action game after this using similar systems, Hand of Fate in particular.
