  • In June last year World Champion Mountain-biker Gee Atherton was horrifically injured when he fell over 100 feet from a cliff during filming “The Knife Edge” , one of the big mountain projects that he loves.
    Prompted by the support that he has received and the huge number of questions, Gee has put together this edit to chart his physio and recovery. Join him at an exciting time for any athlete as he moves into the next stage of his journey back to the the top of his sport.
    Huge thanks to @Red Bull, Doug Jones and the team at Altius Healthcare

    100% agree with everything Gee says...especially about mindset. I had a bad accident 5 years back and spent a bit of time in hospital paralysed from the waist down for 10 days. My recovery took around 18 months, and it was helped no end by those around me keeping me positive and going in the right direction.
    It’s great to see Gee doesn’t look to have lost his get up and go and is following the advice of those there to help him.

      Wow brother, I logged into my other youtube acct just so I could comment on your post. Sounds like you were extremely blessed to have only been temporarily paralyzed for 10 days. Certainly dont want to minimize those 10 days but how blessed were you that the feeling returned after only 10 days and you are able to have all your faculties again, right. To hear that your reccovery took almost a year and a half of quite a task. I know I have been kinda down after just having broken my wrist on my moto bike last july. I grew up racing mx and so this certainly isnt my first break but its my first real injury since i was 18-19 yrs old. Im now 38 yrs old and work a full time job with a wife, family, etc. So when I take something just a simple as a broken wrist which back in my teens would have been nothing, now its actually quite a big deal. Where i really screwed up was by using the Dr i used. He never set the wrist as he was basically demanding that i do surgery ( where their money is now at). I got a 2nd opinion from my othro dr/surgeon who fixed a few broken bones for me as a teen ( now retired) and he said it didnt req surgery and i shouldnt do the surgery,. Well this dr i had wasnt pleased and the bone was never set. The dr in ER didnt set it and sent me to him instead. Then 3 days later when viisted him he basically sent me home to " think about it" after i refused surgery. When i came back a wk later and still refused surgery , he then put in a cast but never set it. I assumed he knew what he was doing but when cast came off my wrist was still BENT and i only have about 50 percent use of it now. Since it was never set now I must have to REBROKEN and get surgery. Obviously im going to use another dr but im going to have to pay quite a bit out of pocket since insurance is claiming they already paid to fix it and that if he didnt fix it right then i can take it up with the dr, LOL. How wonderful insurance is. I have surgery scheduled for the end of next month. Wish me luck and good luck to you and yours in the future , sir.

    After going through a few major injuries myself I can’t help but feel I bit jealous here. What I would’ve given for not only the funds to pay for private therapy and treatment on a scale like this, but also the time! I suffer from chronic pain and aches and I’m only 29, I wouldn’t be lying if I said I was Worried for the future.

My self = 9 knee surgery’s and dislocated hip once, I think I can remember at least 6 helmets I’ve broken off my head and I currently have double total knee replacements for 12 years now. I dislocated my shoulder 3 times now, all because of mtb, and its been 6 months since I last rode (which I know isn't perhaps that long, but it feels like ages). I'm on the waiting list for surgery, but that could be another 6 months until I can have it, and then another 6 months till I can ride again due to the severity of the dislocation. I'm finding it so hard to stay motivated in life, as all I can think about is Freeride and climbing, both of which I can't do which sucks. Also, since I'm 16, I feel as if a big part of my life has been taken away, and there isn't anything there which I can really replace it with, as the only things I'm interested in is mtb and climbing.
    so basically, I'm finding it really hard to stay focused and motivated, especially when at school. I've even started going road riding on my Nomad just to clear my head which I'm finding is really good.
    Sorry about this, just needed to vent haha. Great videos mate, and mad respect for everything you're doing!

    • @rupert4390
      @rupert4390 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vemvdotnet tbh not really, the docs said that once the muscles in my shoulder are stretched too much, they'll never retighten. Anyway, I'm not even allowed to do a pushup as it puts too much stress on the joint.

    From my intramedullary nail I noticed the restriction on seat position and most when the seat post dropper I have to set it just right or I can't pedal in the seat position. Also large jumps on landing still a weak ness sometimes. My shoulder position had to have the bars forward and after lost of filing alloy blocks I now have 10mm spacers and 35mm forward so I maintain my attack position on my Boxxer fork on downhill holes and rollers.
