LAU ISLANDS, FIJI - We’re in the remote Lau Islands group in Fiji, only accessible by boat, and today we’re going to Vuaqava Island, where they are known for their coconut crabs!
First of all, thank you to my friend Andhy Blake for arranging my trip to Fiji: / andhy_blake and to Captain Cook Cruises (www.captaincoo...) for taking us on this once in a lifetime Fiji cruise.
We docked near the uninhabited Vuaqava Island, Lau Islands, Fiji, which is known for its natural beauty, incredible seas, and also for being an island full of coconut crabs! Coconut crabs are definitely unique, and they are a huge delicacy in Fiji and for the local population on the Lau Islands. They all mentioned that they coconut crabs are so tasty and so delicious that they don’t need any extra seasoning or cooking - all you have to do is boil them for about 10 - 15 minutes and eat. The crabs eat mostly a diet of coconut, so they have a sweet coconut taste to them, and the fat in the stomach (similar to the tomalley on other crabs), is like a natural coconut crab pudding with a complexity of flavor. It was an amazing experience to be with local Fijians on a remote island eating coconut crab.
Next up on this Fijian crab tour we visited another island - Totoya Island, Lau Islands, Fiji where we had the honor to cook and eat another Fijian food delicacy of land crabs, cooked in coconut milk. The crabs were boiled then fully deshelled, then mixed with onions and chiles, and lots of coconut milk, and re-filled back into their shells. They were boiled again until the coconut milk thickened into a creamy crab sauce. You eat them with a fresh squeeze of local lime and chili, and it’s something truly magically delicious.
What a day of Fijian food and the freshest crabs from the source!

FINALLY!!! A place that relishes a crab that loves to eat delicious coconut! As a Trinbagonian🇹🇹 that enjoys ALL things "coconut", including a good "basin" of Crab & Callaloo, I really enjoyed watching this video. Many years ago, I learned about coconut crabs and right away I thought of making our local specialty (Crab & Callaloo) with this formidable creature.
This concoction, made of young taro leaves with okra, pumpkin and these coconut crabs, cooked down in fresh herbs and coconut milk…would sent me to the moon!!

Trinbagonians also enjoy “Blue Food”, which is simple root crops like taro, cassava, sweet potatoes, eddoes, green banana cooked in coconut milk or as an accompaniment to steamed fish or stewed or curried meat (wild or domesticated) WHOOOHOoooo!! 🥰

So thanks for taking us off the beaten track to showcase these exotic delicacies Mark….and even bigger Thanks to the hospitable folks on Vuaqava and Totoya islands. May your lifestyle and livelihood remain sustainable for many generations to come. Bless-UP!! 💙

That water is absolutely mesmerizing! The clarity is astonishing; you can see right down to the bottom even with the high tide and the waves playfully splashing in that beautiful turquoise water. It truly is a sight to behold.
Coconut crabs are such fascinating creatures, and it's wonderful to learn more about them. Totoya Island seems to be a haven for these incredible crabs, and it's incredible to see them hanging in the trees and living in such abundance on the island. The colors and strength of the coconut crab are truly impressive, and that shell looks like something out of a dream!
I can almost taste the anticipation as they cook up the coconut crab in that outdoor kitchen. Boiling the crab and the delicacy of the coconut-filled tail that awaits is just mouth-watering. It's fantastic to witness the whole process, from choosing the crab to watching it get cooked to perfection.
That claw looks massive and muscular, almost like a bodybuilder's arm! The flavors are already making my taste buds dance with delight. The coconut crab seems to have an exquisite natural sweetness and texture, like nothing else experienced before. No need for extra condiments; it's perfect as it is.
I can imagine the joy and satisfaction of partaking in such a unique delicacy, savoring every bite of that fine, stringy texture. This is an experience of a lifetime, surrounded by the beauty of nature and indulging in the island's bounty. Thanks for taking us on this incredible journey and sharing the delights of Totoya Island!

Fijian people are so interesting...ancestors from Polynesia, also Melanesia. Some families are intertwined with Tonga, called Tongafiti! Oceanic cultures are the gems of the world...Bula Vinaka, Malo Elele, Kia Ora, Alofa, Aloha!

I was a little hesitant about writing this comment,
not being very good or patient enough to comment
on TH-cam videos. But I must say I like the simplicity
and openess with which you interact with your hosts
when you go on your tours; no arrogance, no sense
    of superiority, no snide/derogatory comments.
