Olympic Qualifiers: Behind the Scenes (Roma Cup 2020)

  • Spoiler: There is no actual lifting in this video.
    This is the 2 hours between weighing in and the start of the competition that no one really sees in the back "resting area" at the 2020 Roma Cup Olympic Qualifying Event in Rome, Italy. Athletes handle this time very differently, but this is pretty much the standard for us.
    I woke up the day before this competition with the "flu" (that's what I was told when I arrived home) and my fever blazin & there was quite a bit of controversy as to why I pulled out of the competition here. We discuss that along with how I made weight in the new Olympic class for the first time, how I've gained weight over the past few months, a look into some of the qualifying process and you get a peek of what it's like back stage at an international event.

    6 months ago, my coach told me I needed to go up a weight class - and it’s been the hardest six months of my life. As someone who struggled with eating three meals a day NORMALLY, being told to eat everything in sight all the time was SO. FUCKING. HARD. 6 months ago was also roughly the time I started following your journey. Watching an elite athlete go through the same thing as me was so so so helpful to me mentally. It gave me someone to reference every time I woke up feeling fat and wondering what the point was, something to make me feel strong, remind me of the bigger picture. Watching your conversations through live-streams with Aimee and videos like this teaches me something new every day. (Also, dream coach she’s so focused and knowledgeable and attentive and also her braids are amazing???!!??) All this to say: for moments you don’t feel like training, or feel like you’re shouting into a void, or are frustrated about a lift or having to re explain your decisions or answer the same questions a thousand times or whatfuckingever else - know that your journey matters. It means something to people. It’s meant so much to a small town, baby lifting, Canadian human that thinks “vertical like Mattie” and screams at the bar anytime she tries to make a 35 kg snatch. Fucking get. those. olympic. gains. Whatever it takes. Grit and patience. 🏋🏻🥇🙌🏻

    So hard getting in the appropriate calories... especially if you're not naturally a "big" eater...

    Greetings! Sounds like you've gone through and had covid- glad to see you're fully recovered. I wish you health and wellness going forward. And lots of success as well.
    With all due respect in regards to not lifting during the Roma cup I would disagree with the decision to not lift and I'll explain.
    I want to first say you are a great weightlifter. Possibly one of the best the United States has ever seen. With that being said, many of us look to you as a champion and as someone to bring home a medal to our glorious country. You are not held to the same standards as those of us who compete for fun and for passion.
    A true champion can and must adapt to anything. Sometimes giving it your all and doing your best are enough to win. Other times it may not be easy to even get to the platform.
    I'd like you to consider a champion who on June 11, 1997 played in the NBA finals with severe flu symptoms. His name is Michael Jordan. He could barely walk after the game but went out there and did what he had to do to win. He scored and unbelievable 38 points, won the game, and won the NBA Finals. This individual has won 2 olympic gold medals as well.
    The point is, in our country we have an expectation of greatness when it comes to athletics. It's important to consider this objectively before making a video to 'explain' yourself. Americans are about winning under any circumstances. Considering the mind state of other champions as well along your journey.
    Take this extra year in preparation to mentally grow in your approach to the platform in Tokyo. It should prove to be a blessing with proper preparation.
    I just wanted to shed some light as this process has helped me in my journey through life as well. I wish you all the best and all of the USA is behind you!

    • @MattieRogersWeightlifting
      @MattieRogersWeightlifting  4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      The point of not competing was there was no reason to push or risk injury when the total I did at this meet would not have been a factor in my olympic qualifications, as explained. We had a meet 4 weeks later, then another 6 weeks after that, both of which I needed to be in top shape for. It is not about winning under any circumstances, it is about performing when it matters so you can get to be able to perform when it counts, ie the Olympics. As almost every single other lifter, in every country, has done throughout this olympic quad. It is strategic. Had this been the olympics, obviously I would have competed regardless of the situation.
