Great to see you in VN ! Couple of suggestions: 1. Change to tubes - every 500m there is a motorcycle repair shop that will fix your tube, has a compressor pump 2. Avoid all roads called QL (Quoc Lo = highway of death) 3. 5am is a great time to ride if you decide to visit VN at the hottest time of the year (Dec/Jan is better) 4. Fake bike frames in VN are more common than real ones, esp v high end fakes (Ferrari?) 5. Wear a full Hazmat suit in Hanoi/cities - air pollution is a teeny problem Head south and to the mountains for best riding in the world, with lovely people who will welcome you
6. Don't rent/hire a bicycle. The one I got didn't really have quill stem and headset tightened down properly. When I turned the bars, the front wheel didn't turn and vice versa. Terrifying at first but then it became a game to see if I could stay upright and go where I wanted to go. Luckily I kept the rubber side down!
love it. Did exactly this in the early 2000s albeit with a few detours over 2 months, spent 3 days on a boat around Ha Long bay and got a ferry over to Phu Quoc in the end after some time at my mates house in HCMC. The Nam has definitely change in 20 years, a lot more westernised, but still a beautiful place, more paved roads now, and the people are just one of a kind! Excellent work chaps. where to next? New Zealand South Island Tour!!!! . . .full clockwise lap starting at Christchurch > Dunedin > Invercargill > Queenstown > Haast Pass/Haast > West Coast Road to Greymouth > Abel Tas > Queen Charlotte > Marlborough > Kaikoura > Christchurch...nothing else like it!
So glad you stitched all this together, what a great watch! I was in Vietnam in January this year, and we covered off a lot of the same destinations. my wife and I rode some of the same roads so there were loads of “we rode there!” moments. But of course we were on busted up hotel loaner bikes. They still made it through and around all the rice paddies and dirt roads. And if the were any issues, there was never a shortage of locals volunteering to help out!😀 Top destination, and you did it proud!
These projects are insane! Was totally hooked on Project USA, will be interesting to see a new place where I don't know any of the locales. Amazing work, cheers!
Hi Francis, I am half way thru your Vietnam film. Chapeau to all 3 of you. What memories you have created with your best pals... Highs and Lows... and in fact its the lows that make the highs even better. I have not done any bikepacking, although done lots of Motorcycle adventures around Europe. They were great, however the cycling format is much more tangible with the places you travel thru for sure. Looking forward to the rest of Vietnam film, a special interest to em as I am going there back packing in the new year.... can't wait to watch the Malaysia and America films next... Oh and superb production, the combination of Slow Motion and the music is brilliant.
I've ridden Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh and Ho Chi Minh to Hanoi. It is am amazing country to ride through. There is no right of way and so as a cyclist I had to keep my eye on road sides and junctions. It's a very affordable trip too as I would get my on 15 quid a day for everything. I recommend riding the inland road from whichever of the 2 big cities you start. The road is Duong Ho Chi Minh and it starts about 70km outside Ho Chi Minh and ends around Hoa Binh/Mai Chau which is about 80km from Hanoi. That is the safest route. I had to join Quoc Lo 1 in central Vietnam for a day or 2 as the Duong Ho Chi Minh had 200km with no hotels. A lot of cars and motorcycles beep there horn as they come up behind you but it is friendly and just to let you know they are at your back. For me the horn noises are white noise. It never bothers me in the 7 years I've ;lived there and cycled the country.
At 1:40:50 respect to that man, his bike has no gears to change but his effort to climb the hill absolutely madness!🙌🏼🔥 Imagine climb that hills with fixed gear also..😌🥲 at 2:09:47 😱👍🏼🚴♀️
Fantastic! Are you going to consolidate the Australian ride also? That was my all time favorite! Thank you for the videos, they are so enjoyable! 🚴🏻♂️🚴🏻♂️🚴🏻♂️❤️
This was a fantastic watch! Quick question, there is a song that starts at 2:30:05 ish that I can't seem to find anywhere. Could you provide the artist/song name?
What a great video and adventure! Watch the whole video today during my "pain cave" session and enjoyed it a lot! I'm planning to cycle Vietnam by the end of the year (Dec/Jan) and doing my route planning at the moment. May I ask you a favor and you'll share your route with me? Thanks and keep on going with your amazing content!
Top banana geezer my friend, great video as always, I nearly charged me leccy bike and rode to your private canal to punch those two disrespectful fish, one called you a t**t, cheeky little bugger, 60 plus Zander jay, cudos my friend, tight lines 😍🙏
Hi, thanks for the video! What camera straps are you using to secure them on your back while riding? Is sweat a problem at the spot where the cam rests.
Right? I'm sitting here like... Did Francis bleach his hair again and then also go to Vietnam again? Pretty sure he just restitched all of his Vietnam trip into a new video from his trip like 5 years ago
You can shout... Way Way! to alert scooters to your presence and no one will get upset..it is equivalent to scooters beeping to alert you - enjoy the food too!
All tr should be read as ch and nguyen as whin. Plenty of microbreweries and cafes in most cities, Food as long as it is piping hot it will be safe to eat, Have fun!,,,
I went to Vietnam in 1996. To this day it was the best place in South East Asia I have ever been. Magic place. I still don’t understand why you guys bikes with much bigger tire clearance! Would definitely help with the punctures that you suffered!
Love this but I do miss maxime - skipping from the original vlog soundtrack, it's the song in my head when I have an 'interesting' ride with mates th-cam.com/video/faGHZQvmHrw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=CePZHgWb0_Zg1_hr

great advice @gavinsmith1176
7. Pocari sweat is better than revive or something like that. It's not very tasty but it will quickly solve the dehydration and some other conditions.
I absolutely love how easy you make this look…and how you always seem very calm in the face of any situation.
Love this!!! I lived in Vietnam for 15 years, and this is bringing back such great memories. Really miss it.
It’s like top gear but for bikes with the 3 most English men possible 😂
Francis, you guys are so good are bike packing story telling. Great to see this epic adventure edited into a mini movie.

Living in Australia it blew my mind you guys had not heard of or eaten a banh mi until that far into your trip.
nice to hear greta van fleet again played by your speakers.
You have to cycle across Thailand 🇹🇭 it’s awesome. You can live out of 7/11 during the day on haribo and toasties.
Ooh exciting
would you be willing to put up a playlist with the songs used for the soundtrack? I like you eclectic taste.
Project Santa Claus. From Oslo to Rovaniemi :)
God I want to go bike packing... with Francis!
Amazing
On these long trips do you use CO2 canisters or a mechanical pump? Love the video!
How did you guys navigate this. I am doing this the other way in three weeks and can't find the best map. Thanks guys
Hi, thanks for the video! What camera straps are you using to secure them on your back while riding? Is sweat a problem at the spot where the cam rests.

Sounds like Lawrence actually has the superior taste in music to me.
Damn Vietnam looks a lot more fun than Malaysia. This might be added to my list of places to cycle.

I wonder if it's okay to drink carbonated water every time you stop at a convenience store or gas station?🤔
I went to Vietnam in 1996. To this day it was the best place in South East Asia I have ever been. Magic place. I still don’t understand why you guys bikes with much bigger tire clearance! Would definitely help with the punctures that you suffered!
I think next time get more shot of your bike, when you on your bike sprinting or out of your saddle when climbing
