Malasadas originated in the Portuguese islands of Madeira (where i'm from) and Azores. My dad makes them ALL the time😂 It makes me so incredibly happy that Hawaiians enjoy it and like it as much as we do. So to all Hawaiians reading this... As a Portuguese I want to say thank you ❤️

Hi Emmy! I'm Portuguese and all my life I've known "donuts" (usually filled with custard cream and with no hole in the center) as Berlin Balls (IDK why it's called that, but that's what you ask for in any pastry shop in Lisbon). The way you're describing these Malasadas (more bready in texture than your typical, factory made American donut) they sound like they might be essentially the same thing. Thanks for your very entertaining and informative channel!

Also known as filhos (fee olzh). Depends which Azorean island the family is from but recipe is the same. My grandmother used to make them. Leonard’s does an amazing job.
My mom, Grace, who was the night manager at Leonard's for many, many years, used to bring home leftover pastry especially plain malasadas (long before filled ones were invented) for breakfast. Had such wonderful malasada memories! Now living on Maui, I go to Komoda's Bakery for my sweet treats especially their cream puffs!
We eat this a lot in Brazil ^-^ We call it 'Sonhos', which translates to - dreams. Portuguese brought this kind of sweet bread to Brazil too. I love it ^-^ My favorite filling flavor is doce de leite ♡
One of the many things I enjoy about your videos is your ability to teach me a new word, or how to better use a familiar word, every time I watch. I really enjoy the way you speak and describe things. This is an addition to everything that comes from a great food related vide. Thanks, Emmy! :) ( jeez, this is why I don't comment on videos. Emmy! I just want to say thank you so much for taking time out of your vacation to show us these things. And thanks to your family for being so awesome to share you for a bit on their vacation too!
Emmy 😂 I'm Portuguese (living in Germany now, as I fell in love with a German lady and being far away would be torture, so I moved!) Malasadas made me think "mal assadas?" Mal means evil/badly, and assada/assado means roasted; but together it goes more in the direction of "baked/cooked not overly too much" And after you tasted it, I got it... "bolas de berlim"! That's what we call it in the village I'm from, and in the nearby cities in Portugal And it is an important thing, to the point that when the weather is warm, men dress accordingly but in a clean way, put a cap, and walk all day long throughout the beach yelling "loooooook it's the freeeeesh-y wateeeeeer.... and the bola de berliiiiim...... and the ice cream from olá!!! (icecream brand, olá meaning hello)" whilst carrying all those, with the baked bolas (balls) being fresh from the day, restocking whenever he runs out, and whenever someone raises an arm him going to the person, greeting, and providing the food and water This all day long, walking up and down the beach, seeing the satisfaction of the families who worked hard all year and can finally rest and enjoy each other in the free time! And indeed, being covered in sugar, specially hands and corners of mouth, *is a must* 😆 You for sure did it the Portuguese way, and possibly the Hawaiian way too ˢᵘᵍᵃʳ ᵉᵛᵉʳʸʷʰᵉʳᵉ Happy to see you loved it! There's nothing the Portuguese people back then loved more than sharing the love for food and new found ingredients, dishes and cooking techniques throughout any land we went to, as a way of showing our love and respect, both for the land, the people, and food - and letting food connect us!
Yeah, malasadas is what we here in mainland Portugal call bolas de berlim. Malasadas is in the islands. And NOT filhózes and sonhos, like I see here in some comments. Those are other typer of fried doughs.

When I visited there were older ladies who’d sell these in the parking lot of an ABC store across the street from the beach. Just amazing (and zero lines). The best thing though was they made something that looked like a cinnamon bun but the filling was chocolate and coconut. To die for!

Hey Emmy! I'm Portuguese and I've eaten a few Malassadas in my life. There are 2 kinds of Malassadas: a recipe from Madeira and another from Azores (both Portuguese Archipelagos). I can only speak about the Azorean ones. Here we stretch the dough before frying so you get almost a pancake shape (with crispy bits in the middle) and is rare to find a stuffed Malassada. It's a tradicional treat during Carnival and most bakeries only sell them during 2-3 weeks until the party :)
Seeing Emmy getting distracted by the cardinals during her malasada review reminded me of the dog from the pixar movie "Up". Yelling out squirrel everytime he was distracted... Thank you for not editing that portion out I had myself a good chuckle.

i just discovered your channel today and i'm already obsessed, i've been spam watching a bunch of videos! i absolutely love your sweet and happy demeanor, it's so lovely to watch, and you make such fun and informative videos. i'm definitely subscribing! thank you for making such lovely videos, it's truly a treat.
I like how all the people behind her are teleporting forward thru her edits.
the only way to jog!
I wonder if she saw that or if you made her realize this? I had to go back to see it. 😂
Seeing this adorable little Asian woman eating two dozens of Hawaiian-style donuts in a park all by herself, singing after every bite, has brought my life a joy I never knew it so desperately needed.
Oh so unfair tempting those of us stuck on the mainland. I'd even settle for Krispy Kreme donuts now, but there isn't one near us. 😣
"Settle for as if krispy Kreme donuts aren't good?
@@FFKING1140 Lol, not in my area. All of them went out of business, haha.
Malasadas are way better than any donut from Krispy Kreme. FACT
☼FFKING1140☼ Oh no, I didn't mean that literally!😃 I love Krispy Kreme, especially warm. I just meant I'd have no hope of having what she's having because I'm a long way from Hawaii.
:/ :/ They look delicious. I've never tried them, but her vid sure made me wish I could.
You really cannot beat freshly deep fried doughnut. I live on the coast in the UK, and fresh doughnuts are a popular seaside treat here as I'd imagine in a lot of countries. I love being able to get them!
I gained 7 pounds and I was only watching you eat this!
Heehee
Yu took bite outta every one
'o those didn Yu😋
I’m Portuguese & I’ve never had a malasada that’s filled or that shape... they definitely put their own spin. Looks delicious
Hope you're enjoying Hawaii! Watch out for the errant peacocks, thieving weasels and packs of intermingling chickens and cats!
For real. 👏🏼
The laugh when she ate the chocolate one 😂 that’s an absolute mood for anything chocolate for me
I see by your shirt you went to Matsumoto's Hawaiian Shave Ice.
Haupia is Hawaiian Coconut Pudding.
I noticed that too!
That "Haha" after she eats the chocolate filled one.... that is her saying "yeeesss I'm living my best life"
Random Names Yes! I couldn’t help but smile.😊😊
I don't always like the food Emmy is testing, but I always give her a thumbs-up.
Oh man I loveeee custard filled donuts. That custard malasada looked so so good!
I'm not usually a fan of custard doughnuts, but I want to go swimming in that custard doughnut.
Leah Laushway right??? It looks heavenly 🤩
Hi
I’ve been watching you for a while now and find it so amazing your doing videos here where I live and eating foods that I know and eat too! I hope you’re having an amazing time!!!
I’m in Oahu right now!!! I saw an empty Leonard’s box in the trash outside our hotel lol. Now I gotta go get some! Thanks, Emmy!!!
Lucky you! I wonder if they ship.😁
@@Birdbike719 They do ship boxes of 24 or 36, but only the non filled ones, price is around 1.40 each, I can see you drooling, oh yeah the shipping is around 100 to 120 bucks to the mainland
@@JamesAnthony Dang! Well, I'll just have to dream. 😊
Holy cow I love your videos. Every time you post I get so excited.
I love Leonard's retro bakery box. Cute.
Oh. My. God. Opening that box was like opening a treasure chest! Wow. I need doughnuts now.
I'm gonna eat this crawfish meat pie. But my taste buds gonna take a quick Hawaiian vacation. Mmmm, mmm. Breeze feels nice.
Mmmm, crawfish. I live on Maui and here I was thinking of ordering up a few pounds of LA Crawfish and having a boil party!!
Reminds me of a munkki, which is basically a very soft bun dough deep fried and filled with jam and rolled in sugar. It's that time of the year you can see them everywhere in the store here in Finland due to Vappu.
Hey Emmy I just wanted to say that I love your videos! I live in Oahu in Waipahu and would love for you to try eat some fresh Poke from someplace like Taniokas in Waipahu, or filipino food from Elena's or Thelma's.
Ahhh....it was almost painful to watch until Emmy brought out that large cup of coffee. Yummmm!
I haven't seen one of your videos that I haven't enjoyed :-) I love how it looked like you were going to get up @ 10:49 and go converse with those cardinals lol :-D
if you planning to try other malasadas from Hawaii, I also recommend this pop up shop called "Let them eat cupcakes" cause they have mochi malasadas, which is really good! I believe they sell it the first friday of the month, if my memory serves me right.
"I'm tryin' to taste the nut."
We've ALL been there..
Was looking for this:)Bahahaha
Sometimes it's hard.
😂
I was looking for someone with a sick mind like myself to say this LoL
Li hing! I love that one, but I do agree with you that it's very subtle in taste. Since I usually stock up on li hing powder whenever I'm in Hawaii I just add more on my own. 😊
Hawaii, where the wind can blow from four directions at once.
She never changed and is amazing
watching this while fasting :''') Ramadan Mubarak
How does Emmy not have a TV show yet..? I mean she’s obviously talented & comes with 1.5 million fans/viewers. I imagine it’s just a matter of time
