holy shit, we were blessed with such insane omega level animes before like 2007. so much iconic animation quality from so many legends all over the place. now its a few seconds in a anime done by a legend, not a whole series.
The funny thing is that after that time even more incredible series came out, but a lot more series came out in general. People don't remember the bad old ones.
@@wumbojet well, except Gundou Musashi. A 2006 anime so famously bad it became a cult classic and coined a phrase "Musashi QUALITY". And most people still don't remember it.
Interisting info regarding the english voice casting talk after the 1st episode: Steve Blum, the voice of Spike and Mugen, is now married to the ADR director from Cowboy Bebop, Mary Elizabeth Mcglynn, who also happened to be the voice of Julia. She did not return for that job with Samurai Champloo. Blum had several leading roles in anime between Bebop and Champloo, so was likely a top choice regardless of his background with the original creator.
Mehgan called it a Renaissance Era of VA's, I agree up to a point. Before this time (1999-2005), English VA's were not well regarded. There were only a few dozen voice actors for all the dubbing roles. It was after this time VA's began getting recognition in anime conventions because they sounded like they were finally trying to sound like the characters. This is the timeframe where all the English dub memes and stereotypes were Reverse Uno carded. Personally I couldn't tell you a single episode of Champloo from memory, I know I watched it, but it wasn't high on my list. I also watched the dub, and I was distracted by knowing the voice actors for their Bebop characters. I am also biased against hip-hop, so the soundtrack lowered my appreciation of the show. The one thing that kept me watching it was that Kill Bill was popular around this time, so the culture clash of samurai aestetic and track suits was all the rage.
Mugen is definitely different. He's from the Ryukyu islands which are southern Japanese islands, which irrc during this time period was it's own kingdom.
The Jin hot spring with the older male samurai scene was a “joke”. Later episodes clarify Jin’s preferences. But I can see what Meghan was thinking, and could see that be an interesting twist. Glad to see you all started this. Watanabe is top tier, and this series is very close to me and my early journey into anime 💜
2:33 Battlecry by Nujabes and Shing02. Great opening track, really sets the tone. Verse 1: Sharp like an edge of a samurai sword The mental blade cuts through flesh and bone Though my mind's at peace, the world out of order Missing the inner heat, life gets colder Oh yes, I have to find my path No less walk on earth, water, and fire The elements compose a magnus opus My modus operandi is amalgam Steel packed tight in microchip On my armor a sign of all-pro The ultimate reward is honor, not awards At odds with the times in wards with no Lords A freelancer A battlecry of a hawk make a dove fly and a tear dry Wonder why a lone wolf don't run with the clan Only trust your instincts and be one with the plan Hook: Some days, some nights Some live, some die In the way of the samurai Some fight, some bleed Sun up to sun down The sons of a battlecry RIP Jun Seba aka Nujabes, his end came far too soon as he had so much left to give, he was only 36.
Episode 2 is one of my favorite episodes of the series, the soundtrack all the way through is god tier ending with nujabes "ask" during oniwakas death scene; one of my favorite pieces of music ever. The story of the gentle giant, ostracized for his appearance and strength, manipulated into being a monster and the quiet, meek assassin giving jin a run for his money before calling off the fight himself. Its just so good. I love this show so very much. Thank you for watching these classics with us. ♥
There is a short series of OVAS called Bubblegum Crisis 2032 (8 ovas), if you are interested in 80s stuff like cyberpunk, bikers, tons of music and powersuits!
Damn I’m early …..oh well let’s watch some PEAK!!! Edit: funny enough when you asked “what universe is this” ? All shows by watanabe sensei take place in the same “universe” just at different times
43:28 Like a gusher... Maybe that is some people's go to move. This sent me into a fit of laughter. Thanks for that. BTW maybe we send an inquiry to the Hawk Tuah girl, she can talk tuahs about it.
The fact that neither of you remembered Mugen chopping the guy's arm off is something that makes me happy in one way as something I take from that is the creators of the story for Tempestuous Temperaments clearly did a good job of grounding you in Mugen's POV, as he also didn't remember this at all.
Mugen has such a dope fighting style, and the music is some of the most iconic stuff in anime, not to mention Jin is really cool in his own way, but gonna be a great watchalong again for sure
The woman in the second episode that tricks Mugen is the VA for Faye Valentine from Cowboy Bebop. Guess they really wanted to use them again for the same director.
I've personally never liked Bebop as much as people do, but I like Champloo the way most people like Bebop, I think the OST and vibes work better for me. Also, an interesting fun fact, Mugen's japanese VA is the same as Zoro's, so he's probably the silly samurai actor by default haha.
The tattoos mugen has a sign he's a criminal. Back in the day they tattooed criminals as like a warning sign. After Googling I may be wrong but mugens tattoos may indicate he's been an escapee b4
I also started to watch it, and compared to Cowboy Bebop, it’s a little more childish, so to speak. Can I recommend a similar to cowboy bebop in terms of audience? Buddy Daddies.
Less than 1000 views should let you guys know right away that Samurai Champloo is a pale comparison to the popularity of Bebop. I recommend checking out Trigun instead.
R.I.P NUJABES
The legend 🐐
Early 2000s is the time that most of my favorite anime shows are from. Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Samurai Champloo etc.
Same here but also, trigun and outlaw star. I miss my hand drawn, gun-slinging western space operas.
cartoon network space cowboy lineup
Hell yeah! ahem......"Motokooooooooooo!"
Mugen a less refined Spike but Steve Blum great as always
Steve Blum is everywhere with regards to voice acting. I recognized his voice in the Call of Duty series of games
ZABUZA!!!!!!
Very excited for you to check out this anime. My first anime ♥

I've been waiting for this! I had my mobile's wallpaper set to Spike while you watched Cowboy Bebop, now it's set to Samurai Champloo! :D
Mugen is definitely different. He's from the Ryukyu islands which are southern Japanese islands, which irrc during this time period was it's own kingdom.
Great commentary and discussion as per usual, love this series and hope yall will too. Also dope Evangelion shirt, anyone know where to buy it?

Verse 1:
Sharp like an edge of a samurai sword
The mental blade cuts through flesh and bone
Though my mind's at peace, the world out of order
Missing the inner heat, life gets colder
Oh yes, I have to find my path
No less walk on earth, water, and fire
The elements compose a magnus opus
My modus operandi is amalgam
Steel packed tight in microchip
On my armor a sign of all-pro
The ultimate reward is honor, not awards
At odds with the times in wards with no Lords
A freelancer
A battlecry of a hawk make a dove fly and a tear dry
Wonder why a lone wolf don't run with the clan
Only trust your instincts and be one with the plan
Hook:
Some days, some nights
Some live, some die
In the way of the samurai
Some fight, some bleed
Sun up to sun down
The sons of a battlecry
RIP Jun Seba aka Nujabes, his end came far too soon as he had so much left to give, he was only 36.
Samurai Champloo has the BEST first episode imo
LETS FUCKING GOOOOO
Fuu to that Oni guy is like Dr Hiriluk to Chopper.
This and Cowboy Bebop are both serials with procedural elements.
Fiiiine, I'll sub for your Watanabe reacts...

Fantastic video! Great discussion 🎉
35:35 Of course he was hitting on him, he's a hitman, that's what he does.

@6:18 Lmfao!! It took me a second to understand what you meant.

Champloo is so underrated
16:45 Shiki no Uta by Nujabes and MINMI to play us out.
Mugen has such a dope fighting style, and the music is some of the most iconic stuff in anime, not to mention Jin is really cool in his own way, but gonna be a great watchalong again for sure
🔥 first episode
34:50 thats Faye's va
the discussion in the end is wild, keep cooking, Megan

16:45 I miss listening to this ED every night in the 00s

Mugen VA is Zorro Japanese voice acting in the sub
Don Diego De La Vega's VA? 😱
Kazuya Nakai@@happyslapsgiving5421
Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo are counterparts to each other
How so?
Mugen does mean "infinty"/"Limitless"/"Unlimited"
I've personally never liked Bebop as much as people do, but I like Champloo the way most people like Bebop, I think the OST and vibes work better for me.

its always been hard for me to say which I like more between this and bebop. I could expand on that, but spoilers etc. Theyre pretty similar.
Steve Blum was truly in his bag with this one 💯
Let’s go 😎
The tattoos mugen has a sign he's a criminal. Back in the day they tattooed criminals as like a warning sign. After Googling I may be wrong but mugens tattoos may indicate he's been an escapee b4
This was from an era where Toonami was in its bag! The dubs weren't half bad!
If you guys liked the samurai theme, you should check out Blue eyed samurai. It’s DOPE!
there is a little video on your white bg
noice
Well, I guess it beat Hellsing ultimate..... dont get me wrong the show is freaking hilarious and great drama too
Would be cool if you'll react to Shigurui after Champloo
I also started to watch it, and compared to Cowboy Bebop, it’s a little more childish, so to speak. Can I recommend a similar to cowboy bebop in terms of audience? Buddy Daddies.

Watching another classic in English….fuck.
Because the dub is better.
Dont be that guy
