      Believe or not the music foreshadows the next song. Each song drives the plot forward.
      The Family Madrigal had abuela interrupt it just before the note comes back to a Bmajor. Foreshadowing the breaking of family. How Dos Oruguitas ends with in the movie with an augmented cord with abuela finally coming to terms that the future is unknown and the healing can begin

      At the gifting Maribel is five. When Antonio gets his give at 5 Mirabel is 15. So Bruno has been living in the walls for 10 years

    The candle was marked with the golden butterfly when Abuelo Pedro died. Abuela's dress has an ombre pattern at the bottom, to show both where the water of the river rose up to her thighs as she fled, and if you look closely, her dress is marked by a pattern of dark butterflies in the ombre.
    Even before the candle ceremony, Mirabel's dress is marked with embroidered butterflies on the neckline. In the flashback to her ceremony, we see her touch the candle, and before she reaches out to touch her doorknob, she wipes her hands on her dress. She was prepped by Abuela to be thinking about service to her family. Not about her own gifts.
    During the movie, there are only two family members who talk to casita and give it orders - Mirabel and Abuela. Everyone else interacts with the house, but no one else communicates with it.
    Although the magic of the Madrigal family is strong, they can be harmed, they age, and we can assume they will die. Abuela mentions that the family came here 50 years ago, so Bruno, Pepa, and Julieta, the triplets, are all at least 50 years old. Abuela likely is 70, and the animators clearly show that she is aging naturally. Soon enough, Abuela will pass on, and rejoin her Pedro.
    There are actually two members of the Madrigal bloodline with no powers for themselves: Mirabel and Abuela. Abuela's power seems to be bringing her family members to their gifts within the Casita when they come of age.
    When Antonio is getting ready for his ceremony, it is Mirabel who he turns to for comfort. It is Mirabel who literally gives him the stuffed animal. It is Mirabel who brings Antonio to his door.
    Mirabel is the heir to the Casita. She is the matriarch to come as Abuela passes on. While the triplets have amazing powers, none of them have the ability to steer the whole family. Julieta's healing is physical. Bruno's visions are of what is to come. Pepa's powers are emotional. Mirabel's power is to fix the emotional health of the family for the sake of the future. She is the most embroidered of them, her handicraft gifts are fabric and embroidery-based, she is literally the thread that binds the family Madrigal together. Without a superpower.
    When Abuela finally passes on, the family will look to Mirabel to guide them into the future, until another caretaker appears who has no personal gift but instead brings the family as a whole forward to the future challenges. That is why in the end, Mirabel still doesn't get a room. Instead, her place is on the front door to the entire house, right in the middle.
    Encanto is beautifully written as a story because of all the symbolism and meaning that they managed to weave in. It does a great tribute to the magic realism of Latin American literature of the 20th Century. (Finally, a use for my spanish lit major!)

    I think Maribel's gift was to be non-gifted. The Encanto knew that the way things were, the magic was dying, so it made an "outsider" on the inside, who could see through the facade and fix things.

    • @rochelimit55555
      @rochelimit55555 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      actually I like the theory that Mirabel is supposed to be the next matriatch of the family, replacing Abuela, who also happened to have no visible magical gift.

    • @alharairah2214
      @alharairah2214 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I perceived it similarly to Jocelyn - as the encanto knew something was wrong with the family dynamic - so it didn't give Mirabel a gift so that she wouldn't have the same expectations that everyone else had. Consider that Antonio didn't even have his gift for 24 hrs before Abuela said "we'll find a use for (his) gift".
      Also, I encourage @American Mum to watch with English subtitles so you can read the translation of the Dos Orugitas song (the flashback song). Those scenes hit even harder when you understand the lyrics of the song - Two little caterpillars (orugitas) in a changing world, they no longer hold each other, they enter chrysalis, and the last chorus refers to them as butterflies (mariposas)

    • @tofu_golem
      @tofu_golem 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I disagree.
      Not having a gift at all was the whole point of the movie. If she has a secret or metaphorical gift, then that undermines the main theme of the movie.
      Because of the trauma she experienced in losing her husband, grandma placed so much pressure, so many expectations on her progeny that she started to value what her children and grandchildren could do more than she valued them. This was what caused most of the problems in the family.
      You should value your family more than you value what they can do.

    I love this movie so much! Antonio is my favorite. He was too cute. Most people don't mention it much, but he was instrumental in helping everything. He talked to the rats and even provided the room for Bruno to have his vision. Also, it hurt my heart when they showed Bruno's plate behind the wall.

    • @changelingchild4299
      @changelingchild4299 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      He had more of a hand in things than most people realise. I think he sends the toucan to keep an eye on mirabel and encourages the animals to piece together the vision under the table.

      Dolore did the rest... because she wasn't going to let cousin dearest get her man... she had been keeping the secrets of everybody, Bruno included (remember how she hears the rats speak in the wall? she doesn't speak rat.. she knew it was Bruno talking to them)... for a good 20 years...
      then she drops the "he wants 5 kids" bomb, that shows Isabella's dismay at her impending fate... and she drops the big bomb of Maribel's secret to disrupt the marriage proposal completely. that's some tactical timing right there..

    The candle is a running theme for Alma and Pedro. They met at a festival celebrating Day of the Little Candles. Next we see their wedding candle, then it appears again behind their wedding photo when Alma tells Pedro about the triplets. They take it for light when they flee their home and when Pedro sacrifices himself the candle becomes magical. Then it saves Alma and the babies and protects them and their Casita.
    Lin-Manuel Miranda was an absolute genius with this soundtrack. Everything he touches turns to gold. I really wish Dos Oruguitas had won the Oscar...what a beautiful song.

    The are themes in the film is based on Colombian culture and the belief in magical realism. Gabriel García Marquez, the Nobel Prize winning author, features magical realism in his films an books Butterflies and flowers are a component of magical realism.

    Excellent reaction! What I love about this film is that we see a family that was so insecure and so set in their ways of relying on their gifts that they did not realize the true magic was not their gifts but the love and support they needed from each other. And that’s why I believe that it was very important that the encounter had to be torn down because it was built on the foundation of trauma, grief, and the need to be protected. It needed a new foundation; one that was built on unity, acceptance, support, and love for their family. 🦋

  • @doorlocke8009
    @doorlocke8009 ปีที่แล้ว

    Fun Fact: everyone's gift is embroidered on their clothes, Bruno has hour glasses, barbells for the strong one, sound waves for the one with good hearing, etc. Mirabelle's clothes had butterflies embroidered on them so right from the beginning the movie was telling you what gift she had.
    Also the miracle would only give up when Mirabelle did, any time her confidence in the family was shaken the cracks would appear or expand, ultimately culminating when she realized the grandmother cared more about the gift than her own family and Mirabelle's confidence was shattered

  • @orionofford777
    @orionofford777 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I believe Mirabelle odd meant to carry on the traditions and miracle after abuela it's gone. The new front door of the house has Maribel standing out in front.

  • @toanzhou
    @toanzhou 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I figure Mirabel understands the house because she never got a magical door. The house said it couldn’t help in Bruno’s room, so maybe it’s not active in anyone’s room. Then Mirabel has a great advantage of having full immersion in Casita’s way of communicating, whereas everyone else really doesn’t.

  • @Necro616
    @Necro616 ปีที่แล้ว

    A theory going around is that the reason Mirabel didn't get a gift was because after she let go of the candle, she wiped her hands on her dress. It's possible that the magic from the candle stays on the persons hands, and if she wiped it off, then the door wouldn't work.

It was exactly what I needed after having a bad emotional day. Your positive, sweet, heartwarming energy and this movie with its beautiful message really helped and comforted me.
    When I first watched this movie Luisa's song made me cry. A few years back I had a burn-out and I'm still not back to who I was before (self care is a positive change though, but stress and concentration symptoms are less fun haha). The song to me just really described how I was feeling during the time that caused my burn-out and for a part that comforted me because I felt understood but it also is confronting.
    Anyways, just wanted to share that with you. Thank you for your great reaction and I love you!
