    Mixing heavy guitars shouldn't require a bunch of fancy trickery or 3rd party plugins.
    As a matter of fact, you can do it within Reaper using nothing but the stock plugins that Reaper comes with.
    In this video, I show you exactly how mixing heavy guitar tracks in Reaper can be a breeze if you know which stock plugins to use.

    Man thank you so much, I am very new to Reaper and Audio recording, but was able to follow you overall concept about EQ/Compression. I am recording a stratocaster through a Marshall, using a SM-57 and a Royer 101. I am using a Clarett 4 pre and with Royer D-Boost for both Mics. Marshall's have a ton of mid range.
    And my Strat single coils are a pain in the but to eq. But anyway I was able to make it sound a lot better due to this Video. Just wondering to teach on the side hourly session? let me know. Off to download your template

    By the way, you probably already know this, but Reaper's stock compressor (ReaComp) also allows you to adjust a high and low pass for the compressor to take action, meaning that it will only compress the areas where the high and low pass are settled to act, and in casses like these where it's only one area of frequencies that are needing the compression, it can work as well as the ReaXComp.

  • @Kainan2

    You started off the video with the right sound, if you need to misrepresent to people that you need to mix that sound than you have no idea of what it is you are doing. Especially when endorsing Rea EQ which is a good as a frozen croissant.

    I'm splitting hairs here, but actually, if you're only gonna use one band in the multiband compressor to control those palm mutes (100Hz to 250 Hz, as you specified), in Reaper, perhaps you need not even bother with the multiband compressor. The ordinary stock broadband compressor in Reaper has controls for input frequency detection (High and low pass, on sliders) that would probably allow you to do the same thing without affecting the other parts of the guitar tone. But like I said - splitting hairs.

    I've been a follower of the channel for quite a while now and I enjoy your content a lot.
    However, I've got a question...

    Why do you use Reaper even when you have Pro Tools?
    What does Reaper offer you to use it every now and then?

    • @FrightboxRecording
      @FrightboxRecording  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pro Tools is my main DAW. I use Reaper when I'm recording bands live at venues because it's much more stable than Pro Tools. Also, it's convenient to not be lugging an iLok key around at shows. I do use it for some projects because a large majority of my students are Reaper users.

    May I ask what amp sim or amp/mic combo were used for these guitars? Very informative video, thank you.
    I'm struggling to get decent recordings with amp sims, they're sounding so bad that I'm questioning the functionality of my interface or inner parts in my guitar. It sounds shrill during open chords but flabby on palm mutes.

    • @FrightboxRecording
      @FrightboxRecording  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey man! I used the most budget of gear to produce this recording. A super cheap 2-channel interface, EZ drummer and a cheap amp sim.
      The trick is I used my own custom made impulse responses. I explain how I did it in this video: th-cam.com/video/nxABsaZhrjs/w-d-xo.html also, there's a link in that video so you can download the IR's for free.
      I highly doubt there's anything wrong with your gear. It usually comes down to a simple workflow issue. Hope that helps!

    • @FrightboxRecording
      @FrightboxRecording  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In all honesty, I try to use an IR that doesn't have any nasty frequencies in the first place. This makes mixing a lot easier and I can also EQ both guitars at the same time on a buss. That being said, if you do have some problem frequencies, EQ each guitar independently.

      I love using it from time to time, but my entire studio is build around Pro Tools and my engineers all use Pro Tools as well. If I were starting over, I'd definitely use Reaper.

    Its been 3 years and a divorce since I recorded guitar...my question is I used to love a plugin I think it was called Sony dolby digital or something it would just make the entire track sound amazing. Any one know what it was ?.

    Great video. If you like Reaper and ReaQ , get JS ReEQ. Free as well , made for Reaper , and better than ReaQ

      You beat me to it. It is arguably the best EQ made for Reaper. Its basically Pro Q2 but free.

    I used to use a crap load of third party plugins and it was not necessary most of the time. Reapers stock ones are plenty good enough to do the work.

      I agree 100%! I own a ton of third party plugins and only use a very small percentage of them.
