Lordi represented Finland in the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest with the song 'Hard Rock Hallelujah'. They won the Grand Final in Athens. Greetings from Finland. 🤘🤘
They are always in costumes, a rock band from Finland, a country known for the record holder of the most rock bands in the world and they are the winner of the EUROVISION singing contest in 2006. A singing contest of all nations in Europe since the 50's. The band ABBA of Sweden, Celine Dione of Switzerland, the boy band Blue of the UK were winners and many big musical artists from Europe started in EUROVISION.
Finland’s Lordi have, for over two decades now, been a formidable force in European hard rock, and one of the most successful acts in modern day hair metal - as well as shock rock, both terms definitely apply. Formed, and led by their frontman and songwriter Tomi Putaansuu, a.k.a. Mr. Lordi, they were an immediate hit in their home country even with their first two singles, ”Would you love a monsterman?” and ”The devil is a loser (and he’s my bitch)”. I kid you not, that really IS an actual song title. And the song is awesome! The masks and outfits - that, coincidentally, the band modify slightly before every new tour - are there because Mr. Lordi always had this dream of forming a band with the same type of striking stage show and playing the same type of catchy hard rock music as his own childhood heroes: Kiss, Alice Cooper, Twisted Sister and W.A.S.P. And, luckily for him, he just happened to be the president of Kiss’ Finnish fan club so he had no problems locating musicians with similar interests. After two successful albums, Lordi were, to their own astonishment, approached by the biggest mainstream musical event in Europe, the annual Eurovision Song Contest. Or more specifically, the Finnish branch looking for and selecting talent to compete for the honor of representing their country in that contest (one song per nation). Not that the idea was altogether unprecedented. In 2000, Nightwish had also competed for said honor with the song ”Sleepwalker”, to become the overwhelming favorite by viewers (these contests air on live TV, for viewers to call in and vote on their favorite song) - but, the jury decided to go against the viewers’ wishes and select another artist. The outrage from viewers were not lessened by the subsequent fiasco for Finland in that year’s Eurovision. So there was certainly an interest among Finns to give their metal folk a chance and see what these could accomplish. Finland just so happens to be the most heavy metal-loving country in the world … Lordi chose to enter the contest with ”Hard rock hallelujah”, one of the songs written for their up n’ coming third album ”The arockalypse” (all their albums have pun titles; other examples include ”The Monsterican dream”, ”To beast or not to beast” and ”Scare force one”). They won the national contest, and were consequently selected to represent Finland in the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest. During the interim months, there were innumerable expressions of shock and outrage from all over Europe that a hard rock band in monster costumes were going to take part in Eurovision. A miniature Satanic Panic, so to speak. But nothing could compare to the shock for how the event turned out. Lordi didn’t just win - the first, and still only Finnish artists to ever do so. They won with numbers unprecedented in Eurovision’s then 50-year-old history. ”Hard rock hallelujah” was a certified cultural phenomenon, and to all but purists from the Eurovision and metal camps respectively, this moment has gone down in history as one of the most triumphant for heavy metal. After all these years, the genre proved that it still had the power to triumph over mainstream artists on the latter’s own turf. To date, Lordi have released 18 studio albums, all brimming with first rate, supercatchy, bona fide hard rock, imbued with their special type of dark horror humor that is in NO way, shape or form kid friendly! Just look at some of their promo videos to find out: the one for ”Hard rock hallelujah” shows how a bullied heavy metal school girl gets her revenge from Mr. Lordi turning her whole school into an army of zombies to be led by herself. Lordi’s most famous hits include, in addition to the aforementioned, the likes of ”Blood red Sandman”, ”It snows in hell”, ”The riff”, ”Who’s your daddy?”, ”Bite it like a bulldog” and ”I dug a whole in the yard for you”. But, virtually every song from these exceptionally gifted modern day shock rock legends is likely to satisfy.
This genre is Nordic Metal, quite popular in Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Denmark and Finland (where this band is from). They use a lot of themes and costumes based on the Vikings and Viking mythologies. Edit: I'm mistaken here, the reply below is correct.
@@eetusva7521 You are correct, my apologies. While they are a part of the Nordic hard rock/heavy metal scene, they definitely are not part of the sub-genre I described. It's something I misinterpreted which I read about 10 years ago about the band replacing Hella, and I thought the article was referring Lindy Fay Hella of Wardruna, which led to my mistaken assumption. Thanks for pointing that out to me and correcting my long time error!
Finland won the Eurovision contest that year with this "nontraditional" Eurovision song 😊 There was previously a slogan nationally said in Finland that when Finland wins Eurovision contest the Hell will freeze over. When Finland won, there was satire drawing in a newspaper of a sad Satan sitting on icy rock in frozen hell, saying somewhat like "...so they finally did it..." 🤘😅👍
I think this was the opening for 2007 Eurovision Song Contest, with Lordi having won the contest the year before for Finland. I think their performance in 2006 Grand Final shows them better.

I dont know how big of a thing it is in the US, but Lordi won the Eurovision Song Contest with that song in 2006, as a big surprice. The video You three was watching was the intro for Eurovision in 2007 in Finland. Back in those days Lordi always had the suits on and nobody knew Who they were, but I am not sure how it is now a days :D
This is a really good band! It’s better to hear Christian metal on a Sunday than it is to hear something like Judas Priest. Ironically I’m listening to J.P.s song “Sinner” now as I’m writing this so maybe I’m just being hypocritical. Seriously though, this band is amazing.
Lordi is heavily influenced KISS, even ex KISS guitarist Bruce Kulick did guest work on 'It Snows in Hell' and 'Call Off the Wedding.' Mr. Lordi (singer) & Amen (guitarist) are the only members that are still with the band. The bassist Ox you can really tell he was influenced by Gene Simmons. You should react to 'Blood Red Sandman'
With this song, Lordi won the largest and most important European music competition in 2006, the Eurovision Song Contest.

Lordi has nothing to do with vikings :) It has more to do with "classic" monsters. Lordis genre is strongly 80s melodic heavy rock/heavy metal.

Cool. Jamming Katie. Very funny reaction. Mr. Lordi is a huge Kiss-fan actually. That witchy keyboardist called Awa is from my hometown Porvoo.
