When I first heard this I was so mad at Lin for putting Eliza’s ‘helpless’ motif in their mouth, and then I realized that making us mad at this situation was the whole point 😭 Great reaction, loving your channel!
He is a genius of a composer. So many brilliant lyrical choices. I'm not a rap/hip hop fan, so I went into Hamilton expecting to hate it...actually avoided it for years. Finally gave in because I teach musical theatre and all of my students were into it. Fell in love pretty quickly because it is a masterclass in composition.
FunFact: When you said Maria had the look of regret on her face at first, Lin could’ve had her do that because Maria herself was actually being forced at the time to seduce men so her husband could blackmail them. James Reynolds was threatening her young daughter if she wouldn’t do it. Maria had actually just finished divorcing him and getting hers and her daughters lives together when the Reynolds Pamphlet came out.
That’s the thing about Jasmine. She changed voices on purpose and she does it a lot. Leslie filmed her back stage scatting and using different singing tones. 😁
You saying that it had a jazzy feel to it made me unreasonably excited because the actress is named Jasmine and goes by Jazzy. It shouldn’t have excited me as much as it did lmao
@@SongsFromASuitcase Yeah her story is actually very sad and she's always portrayed as the villian like she knew what she was doing and she was happy about it.
One thing I noticed about Hamilton is that the more you watch and listen the more things you notice that you don’t catch the first time around. You also change perspectives on certain scenes and characters.
“Obviously she was setting him up” okay, like ur not wrong, but when you really focus on what the lyrics are saying (and look more into the actual history) you pick up on the fact that she was being FORCED to do this by her husband, he was clearly, essentially her pimp. Hell, she even said “beating me, cheating me, mistreating me”
I thought the 'beating me, cheating me, mistreating me' was just a sob story that she made up to gain Alexander's sympathy, but that actually makes sense! 🤔
@@jkbutterfly3142 yeah i thought the same! but really, Maria was being forced, since James was actually threatening their child if she didn't seduce Alexander
I would love if you could react to the room where it happens or non stop! They have such good vocals and I love it. Another suggestion would be obedient servant, its short but amazing
It goes without saying that the three female leads of the Hamilton OBC are all utterly incredible, and forces of nature in their own right. At the same time I remember an interesting distinction mentioned in an interview with Lin - something along the lines of Pippa and Renee's "vibe" being stage-trained actors and singers who had the range to convincingly perform R&B and soul, whereas with Jasmine (who was cast somewhat later) they realised that what they had in her was a dyed-in-the-wool soul and R&B singer who had the range and skill to be amazing in a musical theatre context.
Also I love the subtle reference to Jason Robert Brown in the last line, there was a wonderful Twitter thread regarding one night when JRB was in the audience, he said that he noticed Lin turn to the audience and looked directly at him and then sung the line 😂 Jeremy Jordan said he did the same to him haha!
I’m watching this very after the fact, but every time I hear Ms. Audrey say “old style” all my brain, and voice frankly, say is, “Soul girl… she got soul”
You talk about Leslie’s voice and characterisation at the beginning. Please do Room Where it Happened, it will give you another chance to watch without being distracted by all the live comments.
I really like this reaction video because you are showcasing the skills she is using. It's not just a "they are doing this thing...okay next" type of video. Bravo!
I'm so glad you did this song! It's one of my favorites! The change from the character of "Peggy" to the seductress character was amazing. Totally different vocals. Totally different characters.
The difference is 180 (360 is a full circle). And it is different because Jasmin Cephas Jones is playing Two Different Characters; Peggy Schyler and Maria Reynolds. They are supposed to be different, along with their singing styles. That's also why the style of Hercules Mulligan and James Madison are different (same actor, two different characters). Same with Lafayette/Jefferson; John Laurens/Phillip Hamilton. There *should be* a marked difference between two different characters played by the same actress/actor.
When she said "Jazzy vibes" I SLAPPED MY HAND TO MY MOUTH CAUSE WHAT A COINCIDENCE THAT THAT'S JASMINES NICKNAME 💀💀 ight bye y'all, I think I like women now too 😧🤔

I find it interesting that you interpreted the soft Male pitch A.Ham has as the "innocent victim" and the harsh, guttural tone as being framed as the "bad guy." For me, I immediately interpreted, even from Maria's voice, that the Reynolds' are from noticeably lower class than the Hamiltons. This is probably gonna open a very wide book here about classism lol
One of the things I think that makes LMM a great songwriter is that he knows how to build harmonies to blend his voice with singers that are typical regarded as more fully trained singers than himself. He did the same thing with Davide imo. So he’s still constructing a song around his own lead parts often rap-sung, but not always like in Quiet Uptown & Dear Theodosia. Where he seems to write specifically off the tones of the person singing to layer their exact vocal prowess to boost his own in a complimentary, non distracting way. Which given the caliber of singers his shows have, he could just let them do everything but he has the ear to do something that complex & pull it off. But I am not a singer so I could be totally off!
I'm 25 years old and still can't transition from one singing position to another in less than a minute. No passagio. It's either abs, throat, or chest. I feel like I'm already understanding a little bit more just from these descriptions
You should look up what her story was, she wasn't really setting him up her husband James Reynolds was sexual and verbally abusing her at home, she genuinely did want help from hamilton and wasn't trying to lure him in, when hamilton gave her the money, she thought bc of her husbands constant abuse and "needs" she thought that if she didn't have sex with Alexander then he would also start abusing her. She was also really really young at the time, 17 I think
That "Yyyeeeeessssss" at 10:31 was an insanely perfect recreation. Perhaps even better. You have an unbelievable voice. This is the first video I've seen from you so forgive me if your angelic nature is already well understood amongst your subscribers.
FUN FACT: "Say no to this" Could have been way sadder. In the original cut version, Angelica and Eliza both started singing "helpless" and "satisfied" in the middle of the song
Lots of people are mentioning how Maria Reynolds was forced to do this by her abusive husband and that’s true. Another fun fact is that she eventually was able to divorce her husband and her divorce lawyer was none other than Aaron Burr. Such a full circle moment and seeing how divorces were very difficult for women to get back then, it was finally one thing Aaron Burr did right.
My favorite part is when you said “It’s got a little bit of a jazzy feel to it” because that’s the actress’s nickname🤣 So I was thinking “Yes, it is a Jazzy song!”🤣
