Many people call this song, Burr's Be Prepared, or his villain song, because this is where he actually makes a change and where things could possibly be considered to have begun to go downhill for Burr. Even my dog can’t do zoomies without panting. Leslie does a massive zoomie in a donut formation, throws his feet up on a table and belts out a line like silk.
I’ve watched several voice coaches review this one and it’s DRIVING ME CRAZY that no one takes the time to work through/go over/mention the transition to a mix of blues/jazz-scatty growl vocals and how that’s accomplished and how it relates to the character’s new more active approach going forward. It’s so incredible, and intensely connected to his character arc, as well as styled after a huge musical movement that changed music history and played a unique part in social progress and cultural dynamics. I just really get frustrated that I never hear ANYTHING about any of that

I love how they repeat the whole scene from each person's POV. You mentioned only hearing Leslie in Hamilton- check out him singing Without You from Rent! Gives me chills!
You got it right - the title of the song is: The room where it happens. Through the song Burr sings about the room where it happened (the meeting), but the song depicts his switch from standing on the side to wanting to be a part of things, i.e. being in the room where it happens. I hope that helped :)
For sure the best song of the entire musical. And my favorit by far. My favorit line from the song is "What did it take for you to sell New York city down the river?" An all around great song.
Love this. In the video 8:41 your talking about Leslie Odom, but in your pop up the left of you it says Daveed Diggs. Love the video. Leslie Odom Jr did a great job in this song, can see why he won the tony for his performance.
Leslie has such a beautiful and powerful voice. He has amazing music out. Also his version of without you by rent performed a couple of months before quarantine started is so effing good, you're gonna love it. Also rent was his first musical on broadway, so full circle ❤

He is so good. The lisp is interesting - it's not really apparent on the cast recording, and I haven't heard it in anything else he's done. I'm not sure if it's a deliberate character choice, or if there's some technical difference with LOJ using an ear-mounted mic compared to the hairline mics used by most of the others performers.
@@SongsFromASuitcase It would be interesting to know about the microphone placement and the difference in voice. I say this because I work in a news channel and there is a big difference when a person speaks with a handheld microphone in a frontal direction to the mouth or at chest height like a journalist does when on a live broadcast and a person wearing a lavalier microphone at chest level (either being exposed as is done with an interviewee or hidden in the costumes as occurs with an actor in a scene) Although there is clearly a difference between singing and speaking, the placement of the microphone greatly changes the tone of voice.

I would listen to his album 'Mr' and the work he does in One Night in Miami. He is very versatile. Hearing him sing 'Change Gone Come' will tell you a lot about his voice.
I've heard the lisp was actually something to do with the mic amplifying him, and the equipment used to record the audio. If you were standing next to him or in the audience, you probably wouldn't have noticed, just like it's not noticeable on the cast recording.
If you listen to the pre recorded track of hamilton, Leslie doesn't have a lisp. I suspect there was just something up with his microphone that they couldnt fix. Or maybe it was just a character choice
This song, from my point of view, is definitive proof that Leslie Odom Jr. would be a perfect Dr. Facilier if they ever made a live action The Princess and The Frog
I bet this happens a lot when you watch Hamilton: Say no to this: *comes up* My lil bro: *in the room* Me:SH- *skips but accidentally skips The Room where it happened* NOOO

God I just love Leslie's songs in Hamilton. Every single one of them. I will skip through the entire musical for songs where he leads first then do a full playthrough. I know a lot of people say "Room Where It Happened" is Burr's villain song but it's also telling us just how ambitious and conniving Ham is. The verse: Or did you know, even then, it doesn't matter where you put the US capitol Cause we'll have the banks We're in the same spot You got more than you gave And I wanted what I got When you got skin in the game, you stay in the game But you don't get a win unless you play in the game Ham is literally saying he sold out something of himself to get what he wanted to achieve his goal. So this may be Burr's villain song but it's also Ham's, to a degree.
I’ve never really thought of this as a villain song as much as an I Want song. This is the first time Burr has definitively expressed what he wants, something Hamilton first did in My Shot. It’s interesting to see the provocation that led to Burr expressing himself plainly.

A little note, in a live performance you might hear a lisp because an actor is trying to make sounds, like s, more pronounce so people in the far back can hear it. Therefore it might sound like a lisp. 😁

Small mistake... you labeled the last section as David Diggs... when it should be Leslie Odem, Jr. Still great breakdown. This song has so much of that dirty Bourbon Street feel... I love it.
Usually Leslie's voice isn't that raspy, it's actually very silky and smooth but maybe his voice was overworked or he was sick because he doesn't sound like that live or on the recording.

Aaron Burr had a lisp in real life, so Leslie is imitating the lisp. Apparently he only did this for the movie version and not the pure theatrical versions, but I could be misinformed. Leslie does not have a lisp naturally.
I personally do not like the lisp at all - I only listened to the soundtrack for years and loved the smoothness of Leslie´s voice. Then I found it really irritating when I watched the film and he sounded so different - but it´s really the only thing I don`t 100% adore about it, so it´s alright, I can live with it :)

8:50 your label says Daveed Diggs but it's Leslie Odom Jr. singing.
I noticed that too
i saw that too
Was just going through comments to see if anyone else noticed before I added. I was so confused for a min.
That bothered me so much, lol

Even my dog can’t do zoomies without panting. Leslie does a massive zoomie in a donut formation, throws his feet up on a table and belts out a line like silk.
🤯Mind Blown🤯
I’ve watched several voice coaches review this one and it’s DRIVING ME CRAZY that no one takes the time to work through/go over/mention the transition to a mix of blues/jazz-scatty growl vocals and how that’s accomplished and how it relates to the character’s new more active approach going forward. It’s so incredible, and intensely connected to his character arc, as well as styled after a huge musical movement that changed music history and played a unique part in social progress and cultural dynamics. I just really get frustrated that I never hear ANYTHING about any of that
Lauren The beauty in music is that we DON'T all agree. It's often not based on facts but more based on personal preference. I won't always like the sounds that you like and vice versa, but by listening and appreciating other peoples opinions it allows us to become more aware of our own. Welcome to my channel 💜
Leslie chose the lisp as a character choice ... his normal singing voice is butter with no lisp.
OH ok
Thanks

I think the banjo is very deliberate and well placed. It was prominent in earlier jazz, so it's a throwback in the same way that Burr's is realizing his approach to success is a throwback. Not the point, but I love jazz banjo so I hyper focus.
The banjo for me is what gives it the Princess and the Frog vibes, "Friends on the Other Side"... I absolutely love hearing it in this song!!
@@AyeshaShaSha Totally. I loved that song too. Then again, I’m a huge fan of banjo in the hands of super cool people. Rhiannon Giddens... squee!
@@katpiercemusic I do love the sound of a banjo! I might have to look Rhiannon up!
This is so cool

In agreement with everyone saying his normal singing voice is like butter (and without a lisp) - he actually has SUCH a versatile voice. He can make it buttery and soft or extremely powerful - listen to the sonv Without You to really hear this. While youre at it listen to his discography - it's IMPECCABLE
He really is a powerhouse
I remember being so surprised hearing Leslie doing a lisp when I first watched this on Disney+! You can’t hear it on the cast album. I kind of like it actually. Regardless that dude is so talented and this is probably my most listened to Hamilton song
He's amazing

He doesn’t have a lisp on the soundtrack, and he also has some albums out that you can listen to.
Yeah some say it might have been the mic
Don't care, I have seen this play more than 20 times now, and I still love this part, so villainy. The introduction to his beginnings towards Hamilton's end. My favorite character is Aaron Burr, sir.

You got it right - the title of the song is: The room where it happens. Through the song Burr sings about the room where it happened (the meeting), but the song depicts his switch from standing on the side to wanting to be a part of things, i.e. being in the room where it happens.
I hope that helped :)
Thanks
For sure the best song of the entire musical. And my favorit by far. My favorit line from the song is "What did it take for you to sell New York city down the river?" An all around great song.
The name of the song is "The room where it happenS" but he says both happens and happened in the song
Thanks!
On the soundtrack the tilted is “the room where it happens”

Love this. In the video 8:41 your talking about Leslie Odom, but in your pop up the left of you it says Daveed Diggs. Love the video. Leslie Odom Jr did a great job in this song, can see why he won the tony for his performance.

This lines up perfect with my first snack break during school tomorrow! Lucky!
And this is my fave song too, great!
Just Gami✨🥰🥰✨
He is so good.
The lisp is interesting - it's not really apparent on the cast recording, and I haven't heard it in anything else he's done. I'm not sure if it's a deliberate character choice, or if there's some technical difference with LOJ using an ear-mounted mic compared to the hairline mics used by most of the others performers.
oh! good to know.

Oh my god... your reaction @9:37 was priceless, it was like you were a proud coach
I've heard the lisp was actually something to do with the mic amplifying him, and the equipment used to record the audio. If you were standing next to him or in the audience, you probably wouldn't have noticed, just like it's not noticeable on the cast recording.
Oh Cool
thanks for this fun fact
If you listen to the pre recorded track of hamilton, Leslie doesn't have a lisp. I suspect there was just something up with his microphone that they couldnt fix. Or maybe it was just a character choice
cold be either one
The whole cast is insanely talented but Leslie, Renée, Daveed, Oak and Chris are just magnificent
Amazing!
This song, from my point of view, is definitive proof that Leslie Odom Jr. would be a perfect Dr. Facilier if they ever made a live action The Princess and The Frog
I bet this happens a lot when you watch Hamilton:
Say no to this: *comes up*
My lil bro: *in the room*
Me:SH- *skips but accidentally skips The Room where it happened* NOOO

This is such a magical number and shows Aaron Burr's transformation from being Hamilton's adversary to full blown villain. It's not until the end of the show that Burr shows regret in the decisions he made to get to where he ended

It would be so interesting to compare the live performance to the recording of the album. There were some exciting tweaks that I noticed in Leslie's performance (both were amazing lol...just slightly different..he had more of a growl undertone in the live version?)

I believe the lisp is a character choice. I saw this on Broadway in 2020 with a different cast and the actor playing Burr also chose to do a lisp.

The verse:
Or did you know, even then, it doesn't matter where you put the US capitol
Cause we'll have the banks We're in the same spot
You got more than you gave
And I wanted what I got
When you got skin in the game, you stay in the game
But you don't get a win unless you play in the game
Ham is literally saying he sold out something of himself to get what he wanted to achieve his goal.

Small mistake... you labeled the last section as David Diggs... when it should be Leslie Odem, Jr. Still great breakdown. This song has so much of that dirty Bourbon Street feel... I love it.
yeah. sorry for that :)
Its the way hamilton mocked burr for me😂
It starts with "the room where it happened" but after Burt personalizes it it becomes "I want to be in the room whete it happens."
