  • On this day in Tudor history, 15th January 1569, in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, Catherine Knollys (née Carey), wife of Sir Francis Knollys, daughter of Mary Boleyn, and cousin of the queen, died at Hampton Court Palace. She was about 45 years old.
    Sadly, Queen Elizabeth I had kept Catherine and her beloved husband, Sir Francis Knollys, apart during Catherine's final day.
    Find out more about Catherine's final days, the queen's cruelty, Francis's frustration, and Catherine's lavish burial, which was paid for by the queen, in today's talk from Claire Ridgway, author of "On This Day in Tudor History".

    It’s so sad that Catherine Knollys didn’t get to see her husband of 28 years before she died.
    16 children! Wow!
    It definitely sounds like Elizabeth I was guilt ridden over keeping them apart while her aunt (edit: cousin not aunt) Catherine was ailing.
    That’s a very lavish funeral. I wonder if the husband was able to attend the funeral?
    Can’t wait to see what tomorrow’s On This Day in Tudor History brings!!

      Yess! Elizabeth was very much like her father Henry the 8th except she was not as murderous as he simply because she was a woman. I think she saw so Much Death during her younger years that it was something she couldn't stand and she would rather have people in prison for life than Kill Everybody.

    It is good that the queen had a feeling of regret at her behaviour in terms of seperating wife from husband . She paid for a lavish funeral possibly , out of a sense of guilt .

    Elizabeth could be so selfish. I'm happy to hear that she may have felt guilty for keeping Catherine and her husband apart. As far as Catherine being a daughter of Henry Viii I do see a resemblance in the paintint of her but I'm not sure if I actually see that or if I see it because the idea was planted in my mind. Intriguing thought. Thanks Claire.

      @montrelouisebohon-harris7023 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! Elizabeth was very much like that and got it from her mother and father and she got her vanity from her father. Elizabeth lived in fear so much of her life because of her mother's beheading and because she was called a bastard for so long. Back in those days she technically was because Anne Boleyn was pregnant with Elizabeth prior to marrying Henry. The laws aren't the same now as long as parents are married the children are legitimate. That during that time if a woman got pregnant even a month before marrying, the child was considered illegitimate and as a royal would not be in the line of succession to the throne. It was a miracle that Elizabeth was put on the throne in England rather than Mary Queen of Scots because at that time Elizabeth was technically illegitimate.
      Mary Queen of Scots was religious tolerance just as Elizabeth if not more so. The thing about Mary is that she strongly believed it was her Duty as a woman and a queen to have a child and it was all about that dynasty. Elizabeth wanted to rule and didn't care about a dynasty where as Mary Queen of Scots wanted to do both. Even the English people didn't have any problems with Mary Queen of Scots being put on the throne in England but they bitched more about it in Scotland then England because her mother was part French. Scotland was a rough place to live during that time and after Mary has been Queen in France for so long, Scotland had turned into turmoil.

Not knowing how many kids that she had survived childbirth or youth, I'm certain by being a mother that by the time she delivered her fifth or sixth child the baby just fell right out. 😂😂😂 I was only in labor with my son for an hour!! He was my second child and it wouldn't have taken that long had I not had a cesarean prior to giving birth to him. I remember being in no pain and talking to my mom on the phone dilating and then all of a sudden I had to get off & push. An hour later my son was born.

    That is so sweet they were so much in love after so many years and so many children! Given all the political marriages this one seem to be truly a marriage of love. And did I hear something about the Spencer family? Would this be possibly related to princess Diana of Spencer clan? I understand that she is more royal blooded than her ex-husband. Then again, there are people who say the tudors should never have risen to the throne; in any case they had a tenuous claim really through the wife of Henry the seventh who now is thought to be really the progeny of a bastard! Maybe that’s why the tudors were so obsessed about legitimacy! some say that is proof that the king/queen is not anointed by God it is just politics, accidents and the right place at the right time, if you know what I mean. And I am going to give a like right about there!

    There is a chance that King Henry VIII was her father as he did have an affair with Mary,and could have definitely had Catherine Carey. The affair lasted around a decade or so,so I do think theres a good chance that Catherine is his daughter. Plus,Elizabeth and Catherine were close and she even said Catherine was like an older sister to her.

    I've heard a few people say that, if EITHER of Mary Boleyn's children were fathered by Henry VIII, it was more than likely Catherine. Their reasoning is that he would've acknowledged a son and thrown a lavish christening and other celebrations for the birth, like he'd done for Henry Fitzroy, and this is why she's not recorded publicly as being the king's.
