This was something I had conceptualized in my head and I KNEW Blender should be able to do it, but I had no idea where to look. This is going to be a miracle for compositing, thank you so much!
Sounded like I was being taught how to use Blender by Peregrin Took. Thanks for the tutorial. This really cleared up a rendering challenge I was having!
a damned simple explanation on something I knew was able to be done but no one else seems to be able to just put it in a concise video like this; thank you!
Interesting method. Thanks for posting. Also note, If you ONLY want to mask objects (and materials) for colour correction then it would be faster to render to EXR and include Blenders Cryptomatte pass instead. Think of the cryptomatte pass as a built in alpha matte for every object or material that is created automatically for you. It does not however allow you to hide or turn off an object like the above video provides, although you can combine the two methods.
cryptomatte is the way to go, but sometimes you just want or need the object in its own layer and acting as a separate pass "stops things like bounce reflection and shadows overlapping"
@@StevenScott_studio53 Aye. On a side note, this might be a nice little challenge to build a script to automate the collection, layer and comp setup you have done here.
Yeah the combination of both is very handy. Im working on an old save renderlayer addon which setups all nodes and outputs automatically. very handy for if you have a lot of view layers and passes
The new Cryptomatte implementation is really nice though, they should have done it like this from the start. All those noodle connections in the legacy node is just weid?!
@@RanBensimon-bl7sn Unfortunately not. However, I have also license for Keyshot and there this is super easy so I rendered the one frame I needed in the Keyshot and the rest of my animation project in Blender (I needed only one frame to highlight some objects in After effects in post processing)
I have 3 view layers, "front", "back" and "everything". I'm using 'everything' while I'm working, but then wanting to render out 'front' and 'back' seperately for compositing in After Effects. When I create the nodes for 'front' and 'back' as shown in this video, I'm also ending up with a third render of the 'front' layer. This file in unnamed (just numbered). To get round this I just removed the node for the 'front' layer, but why is this happening? Thanks
Good primer to view layers. Didn't know about being able to output each layer to its own file, this will save me a ton of time. Alternatively, if you are rendering on different layers, to compensate for lower Vram, you can use AlphaOver nodes to combine the layers within Blender (you will need to enable Transparent, under Film in the Render tab)
We can add inputs in the output node, but we can't do that for the layer node. Yes, we can add passes but not the view layers. It's hard to manage and organize more than 10 view layers visually. I hope Blender makes a special node only for view layers and able to add outputs in the N panel 🙏
Thanks for your video. How do you just keyframe opacity of view layers Steven. I'd like to sign up to patreon if you can help me as the other guy I sign too isn't that great. Is this possible?
10/10 tutorial! Clearly spoken too. Cheers! It's nice to render my grass simulation and clouds as separate layers, it's almost vital for post-production later and colour grading.
Nice vid. I've subscribed because you showed me a work flow, which is more valuable than a simple how-to. Work flow vids are the way of the future. Thanks again!
WOW, after searching the entire web i finally find a guy who actually explains it plain and simple!!!!!! Thanks a WHOLE lot! I am new to blender and the main problem that slows my learning curve drastically down is that the interface and nodes and everything else gets changes so extremely that its not possible to simply follow 70% of the tutorials... I have a scene with a bezier which i bevels and i am trying to create a lightning, but the edges are too sharp so i want to blur the lightning just by 2 pixels but i cannot find a way. Now this might work... One question though, will i see the blur in my 3d preview? Liked and subscribed!
if I want to render the pngs to different folders in my pc? how do I do that? and when I turn off the eye for one layer it turns it off for all in every collection and it doesn't switch the eye for what I want to render when I change layers
...and now, with my having redone in effect the same thing with the creation of the different layers, once the render finishes, nothing is shown but the pattern which ordinarily indicates transparency with no image whatsoever. Actually, the first time this occurred, I saw a glimpse of the denoised render right before the blank (alpha image background) image replaced it.
Dont you loose diffusion, transmission and all lights value which reflect in all hiding layer by doing this? Because, actually to preserve lighting in the hided object the only method i know is to turn off the camera view under "object properties > ray visibility". There is no other way to render separated layers in a scene by preserving all light and shadow value?
Thank you so much! this helps me a lot. I want to ask something. what if every letter object has render passes and I want to render all the passes as png output too? Do I need another output render node settings for passes or there's another way to do it?
Thanks a lot, your tuts are straight and short, I didn't get the nodes part, what's the reason, without the node part all layers are rendered and from the drop down menu on the upper right of the render window(after rendering has finished) you can view every layer and save it.
Hey, please, I need your help 😭. I would like to export my blender animation to krita to paint the storyboard on Krita. I couldn't understand half of what he said, so I turned on captions and it helped (figured out one word he mangled was 'hide'), but the overall narrative was still crazy -- "I'm going to add a whale". Quacking ? Is this something they do in Scotland a lot?

Can't believe you can't just hide the objects, you have to put them all into collections and hide the collections which is so tedious when you already have a massive scene.
