    For anyone confused at 9:14 : you can no longer choose right-click > exclude .................. it's been replaced by the check-boxes to the left of the object names in the Outliner ....................

      in 2.90 right clicking a collection allows you to 'Disable from view layer' or 'Enable in view layer' (inside the view layers sub menu)

    I really hope they add a better way to manage collections other than the outliner. The only way I really use the layers in blender 2.7x is to manage my exports, helper objects and backup objects while occasionally moving things to a render layer I've set up. I love how in 2.7x you can simply and quickly turn layers on and off directly from the ui in 2.7x and in 2.8 that looks super slow and awkward in comparison. Lots of scrolling and no clear way to quickly see which collections are visible currently for example. Dividing the outliner to two helps but takes tons of space when I already would prefer the outliner to be smaller as it is pretty useless in blender (multiselections are practically impossible for example).
    I really hope they keep working on this because for me this is a huge flaw in 2.8 (along with the removal of the w key). I understand that folder like structure where collections can be under other collections makes it more difficult to create small compact ui like layers had but the total omission of the ui for the collections should be a big issue. The way it is now in 2.8 works fine for small sample scenes with handful of objects but it totally breaks down when you have hundreds of objects and tens of collections because you either need to sacrifice lots of screenspace to get an overview of the situation or work blind relying on your memory.

    • @ArtInMotionStudios
      @ArtInMotionStudios  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yeah, last I heard they are still cleaning it up but so far it does work fairly closely to how the old system worked but it really feels different. reason i split the outliner that way so it sort of feels the same kind of,
      I do like being able to see that objects on in each collection and the unlimited number of collections but it does get a bit crazy.
      the groups and collections being one thing is confusing

    Since this vid was made there have been some changes: after you've put an object inside it's own collection, there's now a quicker way to get it into it's own view layer: click the "add view layer" button (top right in the outliner) and choose :blank. Now you have a view layer with everything disabled. Now you can select the object you want isolated and press alt + E .......... note that even if the camera is disabled, the render will still take place from the camera's viewpoint. Not true with lighting, lights need to be enabled or won't render. And another little time saver is: to name the new layer the same as the object, just drag the object onto the view layer name slot!

      Good notes thank you, this was made when it was still in development so it was intended as a jump start to those who were struggling with the transition. So it's really outdated and fairly basic.

      For me that works with holding down Ctrl.

    • @RomboutVersluijs
      @RomboutVersluijs 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Im not even sure if that shift works, it states parenting.. EDIT Shift is when you need to parent to an object inside a collection. If you dont use shift you cant parent in the outliner. Its very handy that we can parent object in that way as well. The outliner has many shortcuts btw. Focusing on selected objects is super nice, hitting period instantly focusses the view in the list on your object. I use that all the time. Shift + A opens all items, so it unfolds them. I wish there was also a mirror hotkey for ctrl click on the visibility, now it hides all others, but there is not shortcut to show all others again.

    This Isolate-Funktion with CTRL should also work without collections , this would be nice.....but in general this is not a very fast way, because you have to render all layers seperately + all layers together...If you render an animation with lots of things going on this would be inpossible to render.....I am just a beginner in Blender, maybe I didn´t understand it right, but I tested it and it renders every Layer ....I think therefore it would be better to render with Object Indexes or Buffers I don´t know....

If I put a light osurce in a view layer, it won't affect objects in a different view layer right? Instead, I have to right-click on the group go to visibility and click on Isolate. If I want to unhide a group I need to enter it and manually select each objects and uncheck the eye icon. Am I doing something wrong?

    • @ArtInMotionStudios
      @ArtInMotionStudios  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      no you can still able use the eye icon to hide and unhide objects in a collection. The eye icon hides it from the viewport but not from the render but the check box next to the collection will hide it from both the render and the viewport.

  • @sanmau79
    @sanmau79 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    that was great, thanks for sharing! I'm very new at blender, how do you isolate reflections that are in one collection at a specific viewer, and how you make that work in your case, if the original reflexion was a flat color, and now is a grafitti texture?

    • @ArtInMotionStudios
      @ArtInMotionStudios  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can render those out as as separate layers just with the ground layer included as a reflection pass and use the reflection pass to isolate the texture and also just blur the reflection a little. Easier to do it in after effects or photoshop or just fake it by flipping the text and blurring it, masking and warping it.

    Hello Denzyl, thanks a lot for your excellent and important tutorial.
    When I click on the collections to be excluded, I get ‘View Layer’>’Disable from View Layer’ and ‘Set Indirect Only’ and ‘Set Holdout’… but no 'exclude'. Has the 2.8 version been already changed? Where can I find the ‘exclude’ icon in order to set the render layers?
    Also, where do I find in 2.8 the 2.79 render layers icons for ‘Use Environment’, ‘Use AO’, ‘Use surfaces’ and ‘Use Hair’ ?

    Thank you for your support and I look forward to learn from your other tutorials.

    • @ArtInMotionStudios
      @ArtInMotionStudios  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Set holdout is the same thing as exclude.
      Two tabs under the render setting in the View layer tab you will find a tab called Filter. I think that is what you are looking for in terms of ‘Use Environment’, ‘Use AO’, ‘Use surfaces’ and ‘Use Hair’, Also you have to be in Cycles EEVEE does not have those options, Hope that helps.
      Think they are still testing as seeing what people prefer as far as workflow and naming goes, so things might still change a little before final release.
      Will most likely bring out an updated tutorial for 2.8RC. I just felt people should be taking an early look so it's not a total surprise when the change does happen.

    Great tutorial but I think the new way to create (Render)Layers is way more complicated now than the old way in Blender 2.79. I miss the old system!

    • @ArtInMotionStudios
      @ArtInMotionStudios  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      by the sound of things there will be changes before it is final but I hope they tweek things a little because it works almost the same way harder to see what is going on because it is so all over the place and before it was one panel.
      So lets hope to see improvements because it is better in so many ways, just annoying and confusing.

    • @SoulGuitarMetal
      @SoulGuitarMetal 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is nothing complicated about it. It's just a common tree/folder structure. It takes minutes to get used to, it's easy for a few objects, and makes a lot of difference when managing many objects, groups, and linked blend files in a complex scene or project. I don't miss the old system and how it was cumbersome to work even with a few groups and layers in a single scene.

    • @Blentux
      @Blentux 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      SoulGuitarMetal Perhaps you're right. I'm more used to it now. Guess it's the same as always, you have to practise things to get used to it...

    Fantastic! Beautifully produced and very clear. I am new to nodes and this is super helpful. Question: Is it possible to render each of the View Layers to separate channels of a single OpenEXR multilayer file? It would be the EXR equivalent of having all the separate Collections rendered as the various Layers of a single PSD file. Does that make sense? I would love to hear your answer.

    • @ArtInMotionStudios

    MY BRAIN HURTS. Old blender was so fluid with how it worked, and they just wanted to add extra steps for more customizability, I see why but it was hell trying to figure out the logic behind all this. As a beginner to Blender, I'm wondering if Blender can ''read'' the saved parametric mask Tiff layers of image sequences I already have created with folders and image lists, so that I can turn my background gradually into a transparency. So part of the sequence keeps the background while it gradually transforms into a different background. Since I have so many images, I was hoping to be able to use the saved layered masks (created in darktable) rather than start over from scratch using using the bezier tool.

    I am using 2d animation, I just started learning about collections and want to start using them. Previously I was using layers and thought this to be normal, guess I was wrong -- part of the learning process, I want to move my layers into collections now. How do I achieve this? All my drawings/strokes are in a collection defaulty named "Strokes", I want to move each individual layer into it's own little collection. For example; I want all my hand strokes into a collection named "hand", etc etc.
    Another question, is what I'm trying to do how things should be done?
