This is so so necessary, thank you for this video !! I have 2c curls and sometimes I struggle so much with accepting how they are because they're neither waves, nor the typical curls. Sometimes I get frustrated and brush them out. Today I wore them the way they are and actually felt a bit better about how they looked ! I am learning to accept my curls/waves the way they are !!
Also your results are STUNNING btw 😍

The longer you’re out of high school, the less you will be bothered by what others said and thought about you! In fact, the older you get, the less you’ll care about what others think about you. You just keep doing what you’re doing, and your curls are beautiful!

I have always loved your content. you were the first curly Girl I was watching on TH-cam to get to know my curls better.
I also straightened them for years because at Highschool they were always telling me that I am a liar and my curls aren't real and I would do them with heat everyday🙄🙄🙄
And after years of being called a liar I just straightened them everyday just to be normal and not told a liar.
I am still very anxious about this after 10 years....🙈
But you really gave me the courage to wear them naturally for almost a year now🥰
    Thank you!

You looked amazing in every era of your curls!! You're so right, hair should be fun! doing my hair is personally something that is so calming for me and the beauty of it is I can do whatever I want! Your channel has helped me so much as a girl who started her haircare journey later in my early 20s. I was the only person with curly hair in my family growing up so to me styling meant brushing my hair 😂 i think too many creators try and standardise curly hair but really everyone starts somewhere different and our hair is as unique as ourselves. Thanks for the video, it made me reflect a little on my journey these past few years ☺️

Jayme, thank you for sharing your truth and experiences. This reminds me of the time Penny Tovar cut her hair short. She got so much drama from the curly community, it was ridiculous. She put up a video 'addressing' the comments, which was a big "my choice and I love it" affirmation. Thank you for reminding us all: we got into embracing our natural hair texture to be more confident and happy with our hair. It should be fun and make us feel great about ourselves, not exhausted and frustrated.

I had no idea before that and you gave me hope. You sharing your journey has an immense impact! What I always loved about you is that we're the same age, oceans apart, but we love Jesus and have curly hair, so it was like calling on a friend. Also I broke up very close to when you broke up and you were always in my prayers. I'm really proud of how far you've come, it feels like we're maturing together even though we'll never meet each other on earth. God knows you want to honor Him. Who are these people telling you what to do with your hair?! I always admired everything you did, and liked the fact if you felt like straightening it for a day, you did!!! I didn’t know hormones affected one’s curl pattern, maybe it’s something subtle only you would really notice, it always looks fantastic and gorgeous to me. PS I like some frizz, it’s more natural looking and I’m an old hippie! Be well, don’t let people take you down, you are happy and young and talented and kind and beautiful with so many skills. ❤ ✌️

thank you so much jayme! i’ve been made fun of a lot for my hair (very naturally frizzy and undefined in the front) by friends and even family. i started watching a bunch of curly hair youtubers but even then wasn’t happy with how my hair turned out mostly bc i overcomplicated the process and bought a bunch of products i never used. i decided to take a step back from the “how to define ur curls” “how to tame frizz” videos and just wear my hair how it likes to be. probably in the curly community my hair wouldn’t be ideal but it’s nice not to spend 3 hrs on my hair for me to not even like the result (not to bash anyone who does enjoy the process of taking care of their curls. i just don’t, it was stressful for me).

This literally made me tear up. Similar to you, I went through this period of time where, because of hormones, my hair got less curly. It's not like I lacked definition or anything, but the curls were less tight. I hated them so much for so long, but then I realized: whoever said that curlier means prettier? So overtime, I was able to change my standards and try and accept my natural hair- because it's natural. That's how my hair was supposed to be, and I loved it for that.
But then my hair randomly started to get way frizzier; before, it was barely frizzy and I could go like four days without refreshing. I've tried every single thing possible to make it less frizzy. Only hair masks help, and they don't help a *ton*. Honestly, I've spent so much of my time sobbing on the bathroom floor or staring at my hair too long in the bathroom mirror, critiquing it, just because of how frizzy it looked. That thing you said about how embracing your hair should take away pain and exhaustion- not add to it... It really, really stuck with me. You said it's really not that deep, and you're so right! I've only recently been accepting my hair more so THANK YOU SO MUCH I REALLY NEEDED THIS.

I have wavy/straight hair and use flexi rods because I find curly hair absolutely stunning. I genuinely can't believe someone would be made fun of for having textured hair that has volume and body. It gives you such a vibrant look no matter how "frizzy" it is. Just wanted to say that for everyone with naturally curly hair that feels insecure. I personally dislike my straight hair so I guess the grass is always greener on ther other side. 🤣 ❤

I have a very similar experience to you. My hair was so extremely curly growing up and I always got made fun of because of it.. they called me “bush” in school and would always throw stuff in my hair. I stopped wearing my hair out and only put it in braids and buns. Flash forward 7 years later and now my hair has relaxed a lot by itself and I’ve learned how to style it and care for it! It’s just how it goes!

And I feel like some curly community push to keep your hair short if you have looser curls just bc the length can stretch out curls (just see the amount of hate some very long haired curly haired influencers get or they get told its 'unhealthy' to leave their hair long just bc their hair is fine or loose curls and so they get weighed down by the hair itself) but I prefer my hair long and Im growing it out, but I cut layers to allow outer strands to curl more and t reduce the weight since I have very dense thick hair

Ok, I get it. Your ideas can work super well, but for me personally, that would only be happening during the summer. I hate wetting my hair every morning in a winter climate.
That said, thank you so much for this video. For some reason I was too discouraged and jealous feeling like your hair is so much shinier than mine, and mine will always be a dry mess that can never be healthy. (hence, what a hairdresser once told me is "ethnic hair").
Problem is, in the summer our climate is DRY as it's a desert. But, it also turns into a wet snow climate for most of fall, winter and early spring, and that's when I I enjoy it most. I hate the summer where I live so much though for my hair 😥

What's so incredibly annoying to me are those white instagram girls/women who make their whole IG profile and their personality about their "curls" meanwhile they just have wavy hair. The only reason why this annoys the fuck out of me is because they are MOST LIKELY (I am assuming here) the same kind of people that would bully us with ACTUAL curly hair like crazy. And when I point out to them that their hair is wavy, I'm suddenly being called the gatekeeping curly police. These people don't understand the struggles that we went through because of our beautiful curly hair and for them to just suddenly own up to it and boast about their barely curly hair kind of hits a nerve with me. It lowkey makes me feel like they're downplaying the bullying that I (or we) went through. I also do not understand why they get so incredibly mad when you point out they have wavy hair, almost like they get offended by people calling their hair wavy?
