I feel the same, rapping has become an art, a professional, if you not writing bars down and memorising then you behind the game. At least these guys can remember off the top of their head a 12 bar line and then pull out another file that throws some more fire and a bit of in between, off-the-cuff to link it all up. I think it still takes a lot of talent to be able to match already produced song lyrics with a new beat and have it work. If you want a great example of that, you could watch NE-YO on Sway in The Morning. He's a perfect example of that level of skill it takes :)
The transitions where more freestyle and the written part became a song after he did this, soul food was made after this freestyle so maybe it was a song he was working on and after he tested how well it went after this hybrid freestyle he did realized that shit banged so he trimmed up and released it. I personally feel that in my music i have to start freestyling to let the real emotions and the story about who you are as a person starts to blead through

This particular press tour was to hype up Logic's debut album that at the time was 5 months away from dropping so yeah, why not use a verse from one of those bangers and give the people a little taste of what's to come. Shout-out to Logic and the very few hip hop heads who actually flow from the top during these radio shows and cypher's though, it's a real and rare talent.

I've looked into the freestyle thing before and found that it is still freestyling if you use a written. 2 different kinds of freestyle. One is just using a written, but if you think about it, it still takes skill to rap the verse over a beat different from the original beat in the written. Lil dicky does the same thing. His written was from a song with an OK beat. Then he gets on sway and they give him a banging beat that makes the verse sound even better because he actually switches the flow he uses. So although they aren't rapping from the dome, it's still impressive to go into something not knowing the beat and you have to twist and manipulate your verse to go with that beat.

I discovered a new artist the other day on a cypher I saw on youtube called shawn Smith and he has a super dope freestyle on sway in the morning that you should definitely do! He's got really awesome double entendres and I liked his flow.
When watching this also take into consideration that it’s a freestyle, not a free verse. A freestyle can be written lyrics (or memorized lines). While a free verse is top of the dome.
