Sweet Dreams - "I'm Never Giving Up"
A song that I've grown very fond of, optimistic and cheerful. Also possibly the best routine with stools that I've ever seen. The group consists of Bobby McVey, Carrie Grant and Helen Kray.
The group later changed their name to Dreams and accompanied a funkier style. Their 2nd single, "17 Electric", however, failed to chart, leading the group to disband. Carrie Grant is now a well-known vocal coach and producer, while Bobby McVey became a local radio presenter. - เพลง
I was recently running a workshop in a very corporate law firm and for an icebreaker ran a "What's the most embarrassing song on your iPod" question: and I said this to break the ice. Well, 3 days later one of the people from the workshop bought me in the picture single she'd found in a cupboard and let me take it home!! Just goes to show that more people than you imagine have taste!! I loved this when I was 9 in 1983, and love it now. How this didn't win I still don't know . . .

Ok first of all this is a fantastic pop song, I hope the UK will go back to sending this type of quality. This is the joy of a good pop song.
But the orchestra deserves a mention too, they bloody nailed it during the entire show and were a true asset to the songs.
Munich was the GOAT orchestra, without a doubt. They could turn their hand to anything and the soundmix still sounds incredible 40 years on. I don't know exactly what the secret is, other than an exceptional set of musicians (the brass on Rendez-Vous especially) and a particularly strong rhythm section used to playing pop, which is where some other orchestras fell down (glares at Italy 91)
This is a 80's classic. The true glory days of eurovision when it was a great contest with great songs.

From France, I have happy memories of this song!!! I was 15 and I was trying to do the same choreography with my friend!!! I bought the record when i went in england in holmes chapel near manchester in may 84 with my school ....sweet dreams, sweet eighties
This performance only got 6th place that particular year cause 1983 was STACKED for Eurovision. So many songs that year could've won any other year. This was a phenomenal performance.

I think that was my first Eurovision that year when I was allowed to stay up longer, and I was 100% sure that this is going to win! Everything was perfect, from the singing to the dance routine, the song itself and who would have guessed that it even sounded better with the orchestra who did a fantastic job! Not always an easy task with a dance song (see Gina G's Uh Ah...).
Truly love the song and just wished it would be finally released on ANY cd at some point. This and Mary Hopkin's Knock knock, who's there are constantly left out on any compilation! I understand the issue with Mary who's rights are with Apple Records, but the Sweet Dreams track was published on Ariola, so that shouldn't be such a problem, IMHO.
Hopefully one day there's gonna be a CD set with all UK Eurovision Entries, one can only hope!
I quite happily sing along to this (well screech) all of the singer's vocals, high and low and pretend I'm thirteen again gasping in amazement at the tellyovision ! Bloody good song, good vocals and funky choreography. Only Corrine's superb performance ( I screech along full blast to that as well) and song could have won it though!

1983 was a year with so many good songs. Anyone looking for a good Eurovision to watch, 1083 just don't miss. That means that the A LOT of people is mad about the winner Luxembourg.
83 is my favourite year, the field is absolutely stacked. About 15 potential winners here, and the best orchestra ever.

What a superb performance! And full marks to the author of the orchestral arrangement and, of course, to the orchestra itself.
This is one the best UK entries. It should have got a lot higher than it did as it was a good performance and a word to the orchestra who were excellent.

Talk about cheese....this is the full on Edam...but doesn’t it just remind you of happier times back in the eighties when life was so much more innocent and fun.? Love orchestral arrangement on this just full of energy and positivity. Ps how much practice must it have taken to perfect the stool choreography towards the end??...and what ever became of Helen Kray (the blond)...talk about teenage crush! 😍

Fantastic, they should have won. I actually went to college with Bobby McVey, we used to get the bus home together, had a MAJOR crush on him, he is a lovely man, used to chat at the bus stop, wonder what he is doing now?!
I think this is the best Eurovision song that didn't win. I know it is cheesy, but they are all such good vocalists and it's just a happy performance.

Yes really unlucky. Israel Yugoslavia Germany and Carola from Sweden all had rly good songs like the UK. The only thing i cant figure is why a bland ballad from Luxembuorg could beat this.

Has nobody ever noticed that the Brits couldn't resist to rock up in Germany with the line: "The battle may be lost, but I can win the war". They just can't help it, can they.
I was thinking nearly the same but in another time and space, because in 1982 UK won the Falklands war against Argentina.

Listening to this now, I'm surprised the Glee cast haven't covered this one!! The UK doesn't do Eurovision entries like it used to!! Carrie Grant is someone I met at a recording of COMIC RELIEF DOES FAME ACADEMY in 2005 we were lucky to get audience tickets for, she is still hot now :-)

The ESC 1983 is my favorite edition orchestra-wise!! Most entries were made sound great!!

Interesting ponderance. Looking at voting in surrounding years from 80 to 84 (exc 83) Ireland gave the UK 6, 10, 7 & 8 pts respectively. Judging from this & how Irish people like myself have rated this song one could assume it would have received between 5 & 8 pts from Ireland. BTW Ireland & UK tend to cancel each other out in voting records despite what some think.

Nice song, but I think we tried to replicate Bucks Fizz too much in '82 and '83. Israel should have won this year.
Israel was good but my fave was Sweden this year.
Bucks fizz weren't that brilliant either tbh. Had it not been for the skirt routine I don't think they would have won.
Barrdos song in 82 was better and bucks fizz have since done better than that drab song they won Eurovision with.

I remember this very well not least because I actually used to live quite close to Carrie Gray (as she then was). It has to be one of the campist, cheesiest, "Kids from Fame"-ish performances the UK has ever entered into Eurovision. IT SHOULD HAVE WON EASILY !!! Bad luck guys (great choreography by the way). Does anyone know what became of Helen Kray ?
