    When I was a kid we had a 78 model D6 that looked just like that one with 24inch pads. Our hired hand was pushing some trees one day when a sapling whipped him in the face from the side. Had to take him to the hospital to get stitched up. After that we put on hog panels on the side and back. Its the kind of paneling they walk on. Prob weighs 300 lbs for a 4 x 8 piece. I'd suggest watching out for those small saplings lol
    We also had a chrome stack on ours. Was an Excellent machine

    Try spraying ether into the cylinder ends before you remove them for repacking. Put the spray straw on a can of ether and place the spray straw under the wiper seal and cylinder rod. Spray repeatedly while moving the cylinder up and down. The either will cause the dried out seals to swell back up. An old mechanic taught me this trick and it's not guaranteed to work, but worth 5 minutes and a $4 can of either. If the seal is cut, it needs replaced but if its dried out, this may work and same you the time of repacking.

    Gold old dozers. I’ve got a D6D myself hard to beat the old iron. And replace the hydraulic hoses that go to the lift cylinders they have a block mounted right above the turbo and just asking for a fire when they blow. Found that out the hard way luckily no fire but I was sure running around for the fire extinguisher.

    Well bought Chris!
    You had quite a 'team' with you on this Auction and it was really good of Clinton ( C&C Equipment - You Tuber too ) It sure is nice that a piece of equipment that you've always wanted come up like this, and you were lucky enough to get it too.
    I'm looking forward to seeing this being serviced and then out on a few jobs.
    Good Luck with the D6D

    So in my home town there was an old fella that ran dozer's all his life. I had the opportunity to talk to him just a few years before he passed and at that time he had a high track D6. He told me that of all the dozer's he had ever sat on in his life, none were as strong and as dependable as the D6D that he had traded to the newer one. He said that he would have loved to have gone back and kept that machine.

    • @bigchuckyinkentucky6267
      @bigchuckyinkentucky6267 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@augustreil It's the series of Caterpillar dozer's that had the drive sprocket mounted high up above the rest of the undercarriage. This making a triangle shaped track. Cat has actually gone back to the flat tracks now.

    I chuckled quite a bit when I watched this... Built my junior year of high school (wish I had aged so well and I didn't get a long break in kudzu even lol). Looks like a solid machine (wow, how DID we survive without all the def and emissions long ago? lol) and when you get right down to it, it appears there's really not much to do to it. It's far better than the last D6 I hauled, for it was an '84, as well, and I took it to a forwarder in Houston where it was getting disassembled and put into containers for shipping to Africa. THAT machine's undercarriage was loose as could be and the leaks weather-treated most of the deck of the rgn. You'd have been kicking yourself for not picking this up, I've a feeling, and for what you bid and the jobs you do, I've no doubt it will pay for itself in short order.
    Still hoping the 972 stops being a lil... well... lol Good luck with her!

    Thanks for allowing us to view you review of the machine and the turmoil of the bid. After several occasions of you and D.P. Mike together I have come to the conclusion that the world is a better place because your guys DID NOT grow up knowing each other; the potential mayhem that would have resulted would have been breathtaking!!

    I have one of those just like that but with angle blade that has 27,000 hours and has only had one final drive rebuilt and one engine rebuild at about 23,000 hours, tranny has never been touched.
    My dad had a 6C with turbo straight drive that he bought new in 1969 before I was born and he ran it till 2014 building logging roads probably over 70,000 hours. It was still running when he retired it and it was so worn out pigeon toed that new rails wouldn't stay on it. I don't like those ol six Cats vs the newer stuff and they don't stump for shit but they sure are dependable!! Have a new John Deere 437E knuckleboom that has been down for 2 weeks waiting on James River service truck due to emissions problems. Had to drag one of the old ones back to the woods. This emissions crap is for the birds.
