I love this little girl. Not only is she very good, she has so much fun learning. Her smile and attitude are phenomenal. Dad gets a lot of credit too. Keep up the good work.
It's so cool the amount of time and patience you spend with Ellen helping her to really sharpen the important skills of being a versatile musician. Great idea for a practice experiment! I want to try this myself now. 😄
This is what you call deliberate practice 1. A clearly defined stretch goal 2. Full concentration and effort 3. Immediate and informative feedback 4. Repetition with reflection and refinement This is very important type of practice for become great -Grit by Angela Duckworth
Music is not all just grab something and play.Ellen's Dad knows this.Blind tempo pickup is a necessary music skill to learn and develop. At times, there is hard work to being a fantastic musician. Thanks to Ellen's dad and Ellen for sharing this work session with us. In life, anything worth having requires dedication and hard work.Great family,God bless them all.
This girl is fearless and I promise, she will be formidable in whatever she decides to do. You have taught her to believe in herself, and most of all, to enjoy learning. I just wish you both all the success that you richly deserve. You are an amazing teacher, because you allow her to be wrong and figure it out. I am the son of two incredible teachers, and became a corporate trainer, so I recognize it when I see it.
Nice to see this practice routine! It’s definitely one of the best! You two are sooooooo great together! And you earned that cake big time! Nice going Alaverdians!
Great way of training. I used a similar method on my guitarstudents during 10 years. It is very developing but also pretty challenging. But the ones that pass usually develop very good sense for listening and catching music naturally.
SUPER fun video!! I'll say it again, Hovak, you are a wonderful teacher and, Ellen, you are an amazing student!! Thank you so much for sharing a little bit of the process!!
Sometimes I get so involved with watching and enjoying Ellen that i forget what an amazing person you are. She is going to have so many precious memories of these times with you as she grows older. Well done, sir!
"I'm gana hammer it fully this time". That's the spirit. Fun, positive, and a great start to this ear training. A better blindfold setup I am sure will happen for next time. This is great thanks Hovak, a fun educational video . It was nice to see that look on your face as Ellie was doing such a great job. Ellen, that was well done! Keep up the great work. Oh and try not to eat too much cake. 😃 This was great , thank you.
As a blind person who grew up with many other blind people who were very good musicians. Your idea of blindfolding her is right on point. You sir are doing a fabulous job as her teacher. She should do more practicing without the use of her vision.
This is a brilliant idea! I am having difficultly in finding a good way to do ear training for myself, so this is definitely something I would love to try!
Ellen is our Bruce Lee of the bass guitar!! I really hope you got your cake, we all deserve cake now! That was challenging and inspiring, thank you! Keep rockin!
I remember when first I trained myself to navigate the fretboard without looking, how frustrating it was, but after some time and many hours of trial and error I was able to just closed my eyes and go with the feel of muscle memory in my hand on the fretboard, as my confidence grew, connecting the notes in the scale of the melody of the song and it's chord progression became easier. I discarded the use of a blindfold as it felt uncomfortable having my eyes wrapped up, ear training is indeed challenging at first but in time it will help Ellen feel more connected with her instrument to the point where she will hardly ever look at where she is on the fretboard, ear training will definitely build her awareness of what she is actualy doing as to just noodling around on the fretboard. Fantastic lesson!
I am a newbie follower from philippines, I loved this girl she's having fun playing here bass guitar her bubbly smile creates a goodvives, Keep it up kiddo Big credits to Dad for being there as coach
Training the "ear" is so important. I picked up the alto sax five years ago. I was so use to looking at the keyboard when playing by ear. Now I have to coordinate my ear directly to my fingers without looking. Not an easy task. As time goes on I eventually know where to place my fingers for the note. Bravo!!
Nice exercise. Right off the bat I love the making silly faces at the camera when Papa's not looking. She definitely has skills, and is having fun learning. Follow that kick Ellen, lol. Love this channel, keep up the good work you guy's! 🤘🤙☮
I Love you guys so much!!! I Love watching yall, amazing parenting!!!! the world needs more of you. Brother you a great teacher, im learning so much with Ellen!!! Yall truely inspire me and give me hope for humanity!!!
You must be the most happy men on earth. To have a daughter like this. I wish my daughter loves the music like me but no, she is on something else. But to always be working with your daughter like this is a gift of God. When i was young i did all those exercices that are essentiels to become a real good musician and for developping your ears, to recognise chords without looking just by ears. She is very talented. But lord you have to be very patient lol! I love watching you because it's very interesting.
Now I know. Ellen , you augh Everytime you mess up. That's actually a sign of high intelligence when you can laugh and yourself, because you know you can do better, and through our the years you have proven that. Actually it's a song of high self esteem.🌹💐
She is so cute, with an extraordinarily good rhythmic sense and a memory ... Everything goes easy for her. It's actually a game for her. She will become one of the best guitarists in the world. I wish him much success and perseverance! I also like the style of learning.
What an Original practice !! I did it at the same time from this video without to know it, and I think that I was right !! Congratulations to father and daugther !!
It was, Earth Wind and Fire's "Do you remember, 'Dancin in September'" one of the best songs ever 😎 Great job again Ellen! She earned that cake Dad!!!😁
Adolph "Bud" Herseth (who was principal trumpet of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for FIFTY THREE years) used to teach things like "SOUND is criterion for how you do this or that." and "Know the importance of TONE." and "Think only what it SOUNDS like. Not what it feels like." and "Think SOUND only - loud and soft."
I'd sure recommend this video to the upcoming bass players. I wish I had something like this when I started. (I had no teacher or video/online resources back in the 90s)
he a really great dad i think she will grow up to be good person she has a loving dad who cares about her she seem like good happy little girl she learning so fast being so young i wish i had a dad like this when i was a child
I have a feeling you weren't planning for her to play the inversion over the G (G/B) in the second chord progression, but that once she did that, you were like, "Ok. This is nice!" Ha. It's also telling in how she listens and perceives not just progressions, but bass movement. Any seasoned musician knows the 1, 5/7, 6m descending bass note movement. But you can tell she HEARD it, then found it without even realizing that B isn't the root. Yes, Ellen "thinks" in bass :)
I love this little girl. Not only is she very good, she has so much fun learning. Her smile and attitude are phenomenal. Dad gets a lot of credit too. Keep up the good work.

Watching her playing is such a joy! This girl has it all to become a great bass player.
Please give her all the time it takes to develop her talents.
You’re tough on her, just as a caring father should be, great respect!
Ellen, it's so great to see and hear you practice and make progress and have fun doing it! We'll be here supporting you all the way!
I love watching her videos. She's a ray of sunshine.
Thank you for this. Being totally blind and unable to read sheet music, this is good reinforcement for me! Keep up the great teaching!❤

It's phenomenal, her amazing play by ear talent, and your coaching is by far the best she could get. I LOVE THIS. ❤❤❤
Ellen is lucky to have such a great music teacher! That was fun
And a great father! ❤

Feeling it and hearing go hand in hand to create music.
Extreme example, but Mozart could hear each instrument in his head, creating a composition.

It's awesome how he keeps the training upbeat and happy, she seems to feed off of his energy and it seems to help her figure things out.

This is so good for practice, im using my mouth as bass. Thank you so much, cant wait for level 2 😁👍
Ridiculously cute... I think the world runs out of cuteness when she plays.
