I’ve been retired in Chiang Mai for 8 years and not one single day goes by that I don’t thank my lucky stars for being in this place!! Note: they mentioned they pay $800/month for their one bedroom. This is astonishingly high!! I live in one of the (arguably) top luxury condos here in Chiang Mai and for my one bedroom I am paying HALF of what they pay. Also - someone else here asked about the bug situation here - and after 8 years I can positively say i have encountered FAR FEWER bugs here than in Texas. Far fewer!!
Let me add this after seeing comments about the safety of the street food. After 8 years of eating street food almost daily we have experienced ZERO problems. NONE. There are a number of reasons as to why street food (in Thailand in general) is so safe - but go online to get this.

They said that they paid $800/month for a studio apartment not a 1 bedroom apartment! I know it's a busier city in Bangkok but even that's cheaper on the luxury end. Still, if they're happy paying that then that's all that matters.

When she spoke about healing and rehabilitation after trauma that hit me. She wanted a peaceful place to live and she found it! You all are really going to have me get up out of America!!! It’s just a traumatizing experience seeing what has happened to this country.
Yes, but they are in Old town, which is were a lot of tourists are, especially western tourists. I love Chiang Mai, and go often, but it has some downsides
Don't move out of America. TH-camrs love to talk up places like Thailand, Malaysia, or Portugal and how cheap and nice people are. These places are not safe. Health care facilities are substandard, and crime is rampant. We live in the best and one of the safest countries in the world. We have everything need right here in America.

Chiang Mai is my most favorite Thai city of all time. It's such a charming, relaxing place, and it is also the best to explore nature. The cost of living is much cheaper than Bangkok and the food is not far behind. And if you miss Western food, there are a lot of western style restaurants as well and so many great cafes and dessert shops 😊

A year ago I moved to Portugal and I'm loving it. One of the inpirations for my relocation was this channel. I'm happy to see that there are other great places thay I might love in the future 😇

@@obzen901 I apologize for jumping in, but it looks like the person you replied to hasn't answered yet. I'm in the visa process for Portugal right now. However, there have been delays with the new visa system. As part of the process for the visa (D7 in my case), you have to show proof that you have accommodations in Portugal. So, I rented a 1 bedroom apartment in Aveiro, on The Silver Coast, about a 30-minute drive from Porto, and about 2 hours from Lisbon. The apartment is brand new, and the landlord furnished it for me at no extra cost. The rent is 1100 euros per month. The apartment is about a 5-minute drive to the beach and in a walkable area (close to markets, the hospital, a university, etc.).
My friends who moved to Lisabon last year just bought a house in Lourhina. It's not too far from Lisbon. Prices have risen, especially in Lisbon, Porto, and other popular areas. You also need traveler's and health insurance as part of the visa process. Together both of them cost me about 300 euros. You can get less expensive health insurance, but I'm in my 50s. And having experienced a freak accident outside of the US many years ago, I'm extra cautious about healthcare. I hope this helps.
@@santabanga Sorry for butting in, but since you haven't received an answer from the person you replied to, I'll try to relay my experiences with the visa process. Right now, there is a backlog. Portugal instituted a new system to handle visas, which wasn't working well. My original appointment at the consulate in my state was in May. Because of the new system, my information wasn't sent to Portugal until mid-July. I have a friend who moved to Portugal last year. She just informed me a few days ago that some of the AIMA (they handle the processing of visas) may be going on strike because they haven't been paid for overtime hours. So, the process is a little slow right now.
I applied for a D7 visa, which is basically a retirement visa. For this visa, you have to get a criminal background check and show proof that you can sustain yourself financially in Portugal. You also need proof of accommodations in Portugal, a Portuguese bank account, traveler's insurance, and health insurance. There are plenty of articles and FB groups that you can access to learn about the particulars of the visas. I'm just giving you the broad strokes.
Been visiting Chiang Mai for nearly two decades and spent well over a year in total time there. It’s a gem - best trail running in Asia and great local people. Dive deep if you get there folks - it’s epic!

Unfortunately, it's become over commercialized and crowded. However, the areas outside the city are beautiful and peaceful and off the tourist track.

Chiang Mai is great, and I visit often and stay for 3-4 months, but you have to be careful when dealing with the street food. Also, there are A LOT!!! Of Farang/Falang (tourists). In old town. And power outages, at times.
Helo, what do you mean you need to be careful of the street food? How would I be careful of it? Are you saying there are street food stalls I should avoid and if so, why?
We were in Chiang Mai for several days. What a wonderful place to visit. I agree they’re are very welcoming & friendly. We never thought about moving there though 🤔

Yes. I want to know more about the months they burn sugar cane and rice fields. I heard the air quality is very bad for two to three months.
For downsides take a look at the channel _Sunshine_ _Shoulders_ he is in the Philippines (similar climate).
He has videos on expats coming and leaving the Philippines (those who run out of money and have to head back to the US to work again).
In all, you need US income to live outside of the USA. If you use an American passport for travel, you are tied to the USA.
@@ItsMissLalaToYou7 I live in this area. It's nearly unlivable in Northern Thailand for 3 months straight. I still love it here but it's 3 months either indoors or migrating south. Some people only (expats) only live in Chiang Mai half the year and go elsewhere during burning season. My family and I make it work though.
On Insects - cockroaches, centipedes, millipedes, scorpions, oh my! Chiang Mai has a tropical climate so insects ARE generally bigger here. We have cockroaches but rarely, only once in a while in older accommodations, similar to most places. I've seen the other insects I listed here washed up on the street while taking night walks. Michael usually spots them, but other than walking around them, they don't impact my life. Big black bee in the video blooper is a Carpenter Bee, they're very docile (females can sting but rarely do). It hasn't come up besides this random moment in the video. 😅🐝
On Humidity - Yes. Humidity can make the temperature feel up to 10 degrees hotter any time of the year. Chiang Mai is a humid, hot place to live. I no longer own pants.

One downside about Chang Mai is the air pollution from the burning of the fields.

Normally the Private Hospital charges 500 baht (minimum)per 1 time for doctor fee.No DF charged in Government hospital.

Default insurance comes out to $118 a month. Here in the USA, Navdeep, you have to pay default insurance as soon as your down payment hits 20%. In my situation, that is five years, after which the $118 monthly payment stops.
800dollars are much too high. It is easy to find an apartment around 400 dollars for one bed room apartment. In Bangkok, it is much higher.
You can get apartments under $400 Bangkok.
I was paying $420 for a luxury studio in Asoke. New building.
Airbnb are $700-$900.
you need to mention burning season when talking about Chiang Mai. Don't wanna be the negative guy but for me it is unbearable. Its not a place to be all year long. Other than that spot on.

Travel insurance is not good enough if you’re here long term as a resident. They will look at your stamp. Get a comprehensive worldwide healthcare plan.
My daughter moved to chiang mai a few months ago.
Regarding health insurance, I wonder what people do if they need to return to US for an emergency, like a death in the family? Most travel insurance does not cover you in the country your passport is from. Do they carry US insurance as well? Do they take the risk? (That seems like a dangerous risk)
You buy a ticket and fly there, there’s no way to insure yourself against life happening 😅

The water yes, but the street food we have (knock on wood) had no issues with!! Not one single time in 8 years. (What seems to occasionally get us is hotel food. People explained this to me saying hotel food is stored for long periods of time versus the street food carts which purchase their food fresh each day and just enough for that day - no more).
