Yeah, RM did officially change his name a few times. When he was underground, he was Runch Randa (among others), then Rap Monster. It got shortened to RapMon for a few years (which Jungkook still calls him, it's adorable - "Rapmon-hyung") but eventually he said he got tired of considering himself a monster and didn't feel like he was wearing that face anymore, so he changed it to RM, which he said is "Real Me." He goes exclusively by RM professionally, although we often call him Joonie, and he does not shy away from his full name, Kim Namjoon.

After that interview the boys did a VLive broadcast where they discussed the name change again and RM again said he didn't have a meaning for it. RM wrote *"JOKE"* when everyone (read haters) started to judge his speed and questioned his skillz as a proper rapper because his raps are smooth as fvck. So, it was an answer to them. He punched the haters in face and proved that he is not less than anyone with *"JOKE"*. Where *"Do You"* is basically a motivational rap (according to me)😅😅😅.

7:55 - yes, he officially changed his stage name to R.M. in November 2017. He stated that it could mean many different things; however, it has been speculated that it does stand for "Real Me", but he has not confirmed or denied it. Also, if you watch the Bangtan Bombs, you will notice that Jungkook calls RM "RapMon Hyung" and the other members will joke about that. Jungkook said that RM will always be RapMon to him" and RM states that Jungkook can call him whatever he wants.

I think Joke must be taken in context of why it even exists. This is my take.
Rapper Bobby in a 2014 award show spit the following in what was perceived as a mocking of RM's performance name Rap Monster, RM's moving from underground rap to Idol rap with the Bulletproof Boy Scouts and basically challenging whether he retained his skills or now was just an image. Bobby basically says I am the big dog on stage who has it using veiled references. "They call me a monster. It’s not a name I made. You prefer a full-length mirror over a basement dungeon, don’t you? If skills are looks, then I’m Won Bin in front of bulletproof glass." RM in rapper style meekly said ok that's how rappers act, particularly in rap battle. But a few months later out comes Joke which eviscerated Bobby's rather tame but public put down. At the end of Joke RM says hit me, something in rap battle saved for the very end to say if you got better come with it. Bobby never did and after some time they now co-exist quite comfortably.
So when RM says he will never change his name in this song, it should be put in the context of the direct diss he was receiving for adopting Rap Monster as a BTS member and Bobby saying he is the monster. This is rap battle done at a K Pop level as opposed to small venue.

The part where RM says, "Yeah, I told you that I'm a monster and I'll be rapping nonstop" will forever hit hard for me because that was the perfect response to what Bobby said on him and the perfect statement to identify who he is as a rapper
@@tifadreamers I think too many people are enamored with the XCeleste BTS Introduction video where she pairs Do You with Joke as responses to underground criticisms. While I love her, she tends to sometimes use things out of context, like making newbies think Jungkook as part of their debut period hit the streets pleading for free concert attendees when it was actually one of many designed exercises in the 2014 American Hustle Life TV show before BTS hit K Con in LA.
So many do not have your knowledge nor the wisdom to read the words and see it is a very directed "rap battle" response. They are simply exuberant and while I cannot begrudge their exuberance, it pleases me to hear from a fan such as yourself who know his (her) shit.

- Seoul, which reflects his relationship with Seoul.
- Moonchild, where he encourages listeners who are battling with the troubles and sorrows of life not to give in.
- And Forever Rain in which he expresses his insecurities and topics like loneliness and the pain of existence.

He did this to shut his haters down because they said since you are a k-pop idol you can't seem to rap anymore and he was like I'll show you. They thought he was a joke and he simply showed them that they are the real joke.

Apparently people in the underground hiphop industry were scared of Namjoon because he was so good in rapping. Like the seniors were nervous when it came to having rap battle with him(RM was only 14yrs old that time)

RM did change his monicker to simply RM, trying to shy away to the word “monster” in it since he has outgrown that “shadow” as his past. But as he said many times in most interviews, his past and present selves are still his “me” as he move forward to the future. The only thing that is changed is that he will be a better version of himself moving forward towards his future self. During the early BTS years, 2013-2017, they have struggled a lot to prove their worth and place in the music industry, working so hard to shut down hard critiques and insults thrown their way by BTS antis. RM, Suga and J-Hope wrote songs to defend BTS instead of getting in the muddle with the “wild tongues” who belittles them. They have since managed to grow as artists and individuals and finally put to rest that troubled past behind them, emerging as true victors in 2018 winning awards and recognition for their grit and talent as a group as well as individuals with the full support of ARMY who loves them to the moon and back. 💜💜💜 Through all these, they have also learned to love themselves, accepted the struggles they all went through, navigating through the “shadows” that goes with their success. For now, their struggle is how to handle the overwhelming love and success they are receiving from us all. At this point, they are still trying to grasp its enormity, and fear of losing themselves, much less if they deserve all of it. So, please do continue your support to every BTS member and let them know in their hearts that deserve all this and more. 💜💜💜

The rapper sunbaes (seniors) made fun of RM for “lacking” speed that’s why he produced this song to show them that he can rap fast but speed isnt everything in rap. The point of the bibbity bobbity line is to show them that speed without true lyrics is nothing.

We have all been holding our breaths waiting on this reaction, yes know you understand why rm gets mad respect for his rap skills. The lryical abilities of this man and the word play is sick. Did you know that BTS was built around RM? Bang PD was so impressed with his rap skill that he wanted to create a hiphop group with RM as the center. Eventually though over the years BTS have evolved and explored various genre. Watching this reaction video reminded me again that RM is the start of BTS.
You guys are such good motivational speakers and the energy you bring to every video is unmatched I love it! Joke and Do You by RM are what got my sister to be more willing to listen to BTS. And there's a reason why people were scared sh!tless of Runch Randa when he was an underground rapper, he really did fit the name Rap Monster. But even though he's still a rap and lyrical genius, he isn't as agressive I think. He matured a lot over the years and I recommend listening to Forever Rain or Moonchild from his recent mixtape Mono to get a sense of that. Love the video and can't wait for the next one! This came out around March 20, 2015 his 1st mix tape like rap tapes this is why he is who he is best rapper and best leader of them all. I believe he has 3 mix tapes but ya he is an amazing person.

Earlier on he was an underground rapper, Runch Randa, After joining BigHit he changed it to RapMonster. this was before joke I believe. He always kept RM though as we grow our passions and insight change. Hes feels hes not a monster so changed the meaning to RealMe.

this track is full with wordplays that why it’s called JOKE and also there is many korean references. this song as i said full with wordplays that why most subtitles are full with mistakes, but you can’t blame the translator, Rm never did a simple track this man need to stop being this genius🙃. this song is pretty old which it released in 2015 at that time bts were still a small group they received a big amount of hates specially Rm bc he was an underground rapper and they were criticizing him for as they said betraying hip hop and saying he is not a rapper anymore bc of his decision joining bts. Rm replayed them with this track and “do you”. and as you see in the end he said HIT ME which is in rap used when two rappers compete each other, and when one of them finish he said to the other hit me like it’s your turn try to beat me or even replay me💁🏻♀️.

The reason why it's called Joke ie because the the lyrics somewhat nonsense, he even said it in the lyrics "what if I told you that I'm a monster, that's why I be rapping nonsense." He mainly did this to show off his flow (which he switched a godly amount of times during this song) and rhymes. Basically to say I can make literal nonsense sound good
