It's funny because Sega was trying to make a funny face sonic joke because of how silly the japan boss theme is, then when america got it, it turned bad.
@IsaBella B why did they chance the music in the first place :(
* deep breath * the music you're hearing in the American version of this mysterious Easter egg is indeed the boss theme. Whilst eggman is supposed to be clumsy and silly in the Japanese version, in America, eggman is supposed to be seen as evil, villainous, diabolical. Thus the need for such a disturbing and unsettling boss theme. The boss theme was used in the Easter egg because it was supposed to be a joke, and funny. The Japanese boss theme is silly and funky and makes this Easter egg hilarious, *whilst the US version gives you sleep paralysis...* The development crew at Sega wanted to sell Sonic cd to the American market, but had to change the music to suit the American style. But because the Easter egg had the boss theme, and America had eggman's intimidating evil boss theme, this resulted in the nightmarish accident that occurred.

Because... i never bought a sega cd😣😣😢😭
+Floridian Films you know it was actually designed to be a joke, right? however, since the USA and JPN versions have different boss themes, it made the US version into a nightmarish secret, while the JPN version was the real version of the joke.

This makes the sonics in the background look hilarious, I don't know what made the people working on this game feel the need to turn it into a creepypasta.
The game had completely different soundtracks for the JP/EU version than the US version, the music that plays in the message is the boss music, but the boss music is eerie in the US version (probably to make the boss more intimidating because the bosses were a joke in this game), thus the creepy music in the American release.

This is probably what was intended, and I've also heard that signature could translate to "madjin", which could be a developers nick name. Ok, that's not bad. But that still doesn't answer why Sonic is so freaky looking.
As part of this joke someone in team pasted face of a dev onto sonic
That's a developer's face
That's meant to be masato nishimura wearing a Sonic costume
The 24 sonics (yes I counted) wearing distorted faces, plastered on a blue background is creepy enough out of context. But combined that with the US boss theme makes it 5 times creepier than originally intended.
The Japanese version honestly makes this more weird than anything. But to this day, I can't look at this screen without hearing the American counterpart.
Japanese kids: "Haha, good one Sega"
American kids: "I'm never touching this game again"
SEGA of Japan: those faces will show signs of happiness and cheerfulness!
SEGA of America: Hold my beer
SEGA of america: makes creepy boss music and puts it in the joke
Japan kids: mom we got a song for haloween party
American kids: mom im scared
From what I've heard, (Well, I can read Sega Enterprises in the middle, I can read SOME katakana) ALL of it says "Fun is Infinite, Sega Enterprises. Signed, Satan." It actually says "Signed, Majin" but Majin is known to mean Satan.
Actually majin is one of the developers of the game. Big misconception.
Majin is the nickname of masato nishamura (the developer of sonic cd)
Theres also a kanji there
that's まぢん not まじん
Japan and Europe : Fun is infinite, so let's groove until tomorrow!
American : *sleep paralysis demon*
As many people have pointed out.
Due to the music the US version is way creepier than this one because of how the different soundtrack changes the boss theme (song that this screen uses).
But really I almost feel this was intentional.
I'm guessing in Japan, people could actually get away with piracy. I mean, in Japan/Europe, this is a freaking joke. In America/Canada, if you got away with piracy, you died.
Nope. Canada had one of the lightest copyright laws in the developed world until 2012.
SonicSuperChannel "Fun is Infinite at Sega Enterprises" doesn't sound very anti-piracy
There is no anti piracy on STHCD. Try pirating the game and you don't get this or the American version of the screen.
The JP/EU version is like a Party Troll that could make you fall for it.
this isnt a anti-piracy screen
Us kid: mommy mommy I am scared

Majin impressed/terrified you depending on the region you live.
The american version is way creepier^^ This music (if you can call it that), completely takes the p*ss outta the message xD just goes to show how big a factor music is when something is meant to be scary.
Also.... what is he saying? "Work that son of a b*tch, work that son of a b*tch"? Not even trying to be funny here, that's what it sounds like to me.
it is true but if u are thinking that its majin at the end signature.. WRONG its madin, a developer at sega.
The message reads "Infinite fun, Sega Enterprise, Devil." or something like that.
Kooko Craft I know that^^ but everyone keeps insisting that it is signed by the Devil to make it sound scarier.
RosalinaAndPeach I know what the message says, but what is the guy singing?
The message is "Fun is infinite with Sega Enterprises, Devil."
It's only made by a Sonic CD developer. It's not scary at all.
