How to Save a Broken or Damaged Tomato Plant

  • There are many ways for your garden to be damaged. When gardening in the desert, it is very common for a tomato plant to be damaged by the wind. Tomato plants can be damaged by the wind, other severe weather or even an animal. Damage to the plants in your garden can be very frustrating, especially for new or beginner gardeners. Beginner gardening has many challenges, but there are just as many solutions to those challenges. I've been asked many times "I have a broken tomato plant, can it be saved?" If your tomato plant has a broken stem it can be saved! In this video I show you how easy it is to regrow a broken tomato plant using a simple gardening hack. The process is actually called cloning, but it will help save a broken or damaged tomato plant even if the entire plant has been broken off.
    Cloning allows a piece of a tomato plant to be replanted and grow into a new plant. Tomatoes are one of the few plants that can be cloned very easily. You do not need any special tools, chemicals, or skills to successfully clone or save a tomato plant.

    I accidentally nicked one of my tomato plants while pruning, so I'm very happy to learn that I can save (and even clone!) my tomato plants. Thank you for this helpful video!

    This has been so super helpful! I had no idea you could do this to tomato plants.. I ended up growing one too many in the same pot, sadly had to cut some down.. so my others would flower and fruit.. now I’m planting all my cuttings into the ground. 😊🙌🏻 so thank you very much!

      @In The Garden It has been in water for the last 2 3 days. So far, it's still alive and well. I'm watching it to male sure it's not dying. Lol. Ibfeel better knowing that I can possibly have a solution, but also, I'm plant looked like it needed pruning and now is standing taller than before. I believe the weight was shifted due to the piece that broke off was a bit heavier. I just recently tied my plant and may have missed wrapping that piece.

    would be very helpful to add a part to this video that discusses when to cut a main stem and when to splint it - I have a plant that squirrels damaged a main stem trying to get a green tomato off. The main stem is bent over, cracked and dented but not broken apart. wondering what the criteria should be in deciding to abandon a 2 month root structure and cut like you did (would the main plant continue to grow if the cut is below all the leaves ?) OR try to splint and hope it stays alive ? its an Early girl about 3 feet tall, but I think these get 5-6 feet tall when full so maybe splint wont hold ? but also hate to loose the 2 months of roots it already had before damage

      What did you end up doing? Splint or cut? I'm in the exact same situation now :(

    • @instructionaldesigner7310
      @instructionaldesigner7310 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@foragingforlight8532 I did both, I tried the splint for a week and it looked like it wasn't working - so I cut it, placed in water and 2-3 weeks later had great roots transplanted and eventually had tomatoes. The cut version was a few weeks behind yield, of the other plants and the original stem also eventually grew leaves - neither the original or the cut stem were great producers in the end but maybe together they equaled 1 healthy plant

    • @foragingforlight8532
      @foragingforlight8532 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@instructionaldesigner7310 thanks a lot for your in depth reply, I appreciate it! I ended up splinting my plant, its fracture was right above the soil (I think someone stepped on it). Before splinting, I made sure to thoroughly moisten the dried up "wound" with a water/aspirine spray that I generally make for nightshade plants to boost immunity. Idk if that was a game changer, or rather the tight binding cloth around the fracture that I also soaked with it. It took two short twigs to splint it in a stable way + added a support against the stem to keep the plant straight. It has been 1 week and the plant seems to have recovered well, I'm so happy! Cheers and good luck with this year's growing season!

    So hypothetically, could you cut a side stem and do the same process and the same thing happen correct? And what about the top main stem with a tomato on it? We had a strong wind event and when i checked on my plants the top had a tomato growing on it and it was bent over. Not completely broken but very damaged

    I don't know if you'll see this in time and be able to respond - but will this work for a branch that already has fruit? One of the biggest fruit bearing branches from my brandywine plant snapped off and there are probably 5-6 tomatoes that are as big as cutie oranges or bigger. I went immediately to potting it in soil but its been 2 days and the leaves are still super wilted ... the fruit is getting soft ... I'm worried I ruined it. (This is also my first year as a homeowner & first year growing...anything, really...)

    Wow I'm psyched up about this I mean I'm 58 years old and been gardening for decades but I never thought about the Simplicity that maybe this will work I mean I trust that you know what you're talking about but you know the old saying brother until it works for me, LOL. But I'm going to go outside where I dropped at stem before it has tomatoes on it I don't know if you would leave the green tomatoes on it I mean I don't think they're going to be salvageable but I will leave them on I guess and stick that stem in the water after I cut it and trim it until you tell me different about just popping them little green tomatoes off they're not that big plus they're indigos they don't grow that big it looks like a little bigger than a cherry tomato I wish there was a way to email you thank you, Peace., Tommy.

    • @InTheGarden
      @InTheGarden  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Tommy, thanks for the comment. I've had really good luck with this method. As far as the green tomatoes... In my experience the plant will struggle to come back with the fruit left on. I typically tell people, you can save the fruit or the plant but probably not both. And if they are very small and green it's unlikely they will be able to mature on the damaged limb. My recommendation would be to pull them and try to save the plant.
      Hope this helps. thanks for watching 😊🌱

    So I have a massive brandy wine tomato plant and as I was switching the trellis out that it out grew there was a small split at the base that formed and it’s huge so I can’t just propagate it I don’t think. It’s about 6 feet tall atm and The tear about 1/4 of the way through the main stem at the very first place where it splits into two stems and I’m thinking it might heal on its own? Idk I’m too afraid to mess with it now please lmk what you think. She just started producing huge tomatoes too 😥

    • @InTheGarden
      @InTheGarden  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Kyle, I don't have a ton of experience with this type of damage on a large plant. But I would try to let it heal on its own. Trying to re-root it at this point would almost certainly kill the plant. Just splint it where the damage is so it doesn't get worse and try to keep the damage parts in contact so it can heal. And make sure the entire plant is very well supported.
      Hope this helps. Thanks for watching 😊🌱

    Hi! any tips to save a broken branch that has already fruit growing?

    • @InTheGarden
      @InTheGarden  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It depends on how the branch is broken and how mature the fruit is. If its not totally severed you can try splinting it so the branch can continue to grow. If its broken completely off or severely damaged you can try placing it in water and see how it does. If the fruit is nearly ripe you may be able to just place inside and wait for the fruit to finish ripening while attached to the broken branch.
      Hope this helps.

    • @InTheGarden
      @InTheGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. They do still need some light, but very little is fine temporarily. Just indirect sunlight is enough while they root. Don't place in direct sunlight or it is likely to wilt and die. Once it's ready to replant, it will need more light.

    • @InTheGarden
      @InTheGarden  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never really had a problem with white flies, so I can't speak from experience, but here are a few things I've heard other people try:
      - Neem oil sprayed under leaves
      - Packing tape rolled over hand and lightly touched to underside of leaves to trap flies
      - Soap and water spray
      - Using a small vacuum (like for cleaning a computer keyboard) to suck up the flies.
      - Sticky traps, but these are likely to trap good bugs and pollinators like bees and ladybugs so I wouldn't really recommend using for a prolonged period

      it depends on how mature they are. In my experience, you can save the tomatoes or save the plant.
      If they are more mature, you can keep the branch in water as they finish ripening. If they are small you may be better off just picking them and try to save the plant.
      But I will mention that this late in the season I would probably opt to just ripen the tomatoes.
