- In this video, I give my overview of the Celestron EdgeHD 9.25, a Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope that can be used in several different configurations to allow the user to get the best results possible from deep-space and solar system observing and astrophotography. I also share some of my favorite sample images that I've taken so far with the telescope.

I have a Meade LX200 classic and really can’t afford this, but wish it had been available when I was shopping for a large scope.
I used to own an 8 inch Meade LX200 ACF before upgrading to the EdgeHD 9.25. My first images of the planets using the LX200 were a bit fuzzy, even with proper cooling, collimation, and good seeing conditions. So I decided to make the jump to the EdgeHD 9.25. I hope your experience with the LX200 is going well!

I just got this exact scope and reducer as a trade for a custom guitar and I couldn't be more excited. This video is the best I've seen going into the important basic info about the scope and it's uses. I've only done planetary on an old c8, and milky way with a lense, but I'm itching to do some DSO's now that I have a stronger scope. This thing is basically the whole package for me.
I just need to get a good mount and tripod to get it running. Gonna be tough to swing that, but I'm trying to compile some options.

I sold my C8 carbon XLT because my mount was unable to match with the focal length. But now I plan to buy a very good mount and my choice will probably be à C9,25 for planetary objects and sun spectroscopy. It's the best alternative to the Mewlon Takahashi. Clear skies.

Hey Kwasi - Will be interested to see how you get on with this. I've toyed with the idea of this scope, it just ends up so expensive with that reducer which is probably how I would use it most of the time.
Yeah, I plan to use this scope with the 0.7x focal reducer at the start of Galaxy Season to see how it handles deep-space objects, so stay tuned for that!

I was thinking of either the 8” or the 9.25”, but was unsure if I was going a bit over the top, having been away from astronomy for a long time (and as a beginner even back then)… but I think you’ve swayed me. It’s at this point that I would like to ask a question, if I may? I like to buy the best I can afford, when I can afford it (buy once, cry once, as they say), so if I were to get into viewing deep sky objects, as well as the planets too, but budget wouldn’t allow me to stretch to a HyperStar ($1400 is quite a lot of money, and I’m in the UK, so it’s probably going to cost more), would the 0.7x reducer help enough to view deep sky objects and the planets, or would you suggest dropping to the 8” for an all round, more usable size/focal length? Does that make sense? Thanks so much and keep up the great work.
The 0.7x reducer would be good for the deep space objects, but not for the planets. Although the planets are brighter and closer to us, astronomically speaking, they are quite small in the field of view. So using a reducer on the planets will make them appear even smaller. You'll want to use a good quality Barlow lens for the planets to get them to the correct image scale.

Hello Kwasi, hope the name spelling is correct. I am considering getting one of the EDGE HD scopes and have a question on the mirror lock use when using a camera, ASI1600mm pro or similar and filter changes, where NINA performs a autofocus routine after each filter change and also 10% increase in the HFR. Based on this info, would I have to go out and unlock the mirror each time I needed to perform a focus routine or can the scope be focused if the locks are in place or set, I would think not but again, I don't know and would hate to spend the money on a scope where more manual intervention is required. lol.. Thank you

Good clear steady presentation. One tricky question for you :) If they (Celestron) wanted to allow warm air to escape the vent, why did they place them at the bottom of the tube? Warm air rises. If you want warm air to escape through the vents passively, It means you can't use the scope properly as its pointing downward. Are these vents fan assisted? If these filtered vents are passive, I don't see any point in them. Passive vents are fine if you can create the chimney effect like a Newtonian, but a couple of vents without fan suction are useless in a closed tube telescope. You need a fan to suck cool air through one vent and out the other.
Good question! No, the vents aren't fan assisted. The only thing that the micro mesh in the vents are blocking is dust from entering the inside of the tube. So from what I understand, if the warm air on the inside can come out, then the cool air on the outside can come in to bring the scope to thermal equilibrium. So since it's a pretty large scope, I let it sit outside for a long period to passively cool before using it, usually when I'm getting the rig set up and polar aligned. An active system with fans would work, but since I'm limited to batteries out in the field and I use dew heaters on top of that, it would use a good portion of my power budget.
@@AstroParkAstrophotography I think the issue with cooling SCTs isn't anything like a problem as it is with Maksutovs. The Schmidt plate cools fast and aluminium tube cools quickly. Anything over 7" in a Maksutov is a nightmare for cooling. The meniscus lens is thick and always cools at a different rate to the mirror. I once experiment with an 8" Mak Cass, by warming it for an hour indoors then took it outside in the winter. Star images showed lower order spherical aberration for over 3 hours. I get the feeling the little vents in the Edge HD SCTs are for show more than actually useful. Marketing. Celestron and Meade SCTs have not had vents in their tubes for nearly 50 years without an issue. However it should be possible to add an aftermarket fan to one side and suck cool air through.
As an afterthought, you should be able to find a small fan to attach to the outside of one vent, that is powered by a small 9v battery.

Thanks Ragnar! The font is inspired by the NASA "worm" logo. And ironically it's called "nasalization". I found it in a search, and it shows instructions on how to install it to your computer.

I am considering upgrading to a EDGE 9.25 or a 1000mm refractor. I frequently image at very low ambient temperatures, from minus 10, to minus 20 degrees celsius, her in Iceland. I wonder if collimating the EDGE would be frustrating or diffucult in such cold conditions ???

Excellent presentation... I concur with earlier comments, your narrative is concise, organized, and well thought through. I had a follow up question. Have you had an opportunity to use the Hyperstar? How difficult is it to integrate onto the OTA? It sounds concerning that you have to replace the secondary mirror - seems like a lot of potential to mess up the scope. thoughts?
Thanks Francis! I haven't had the opportunity to use the Hyperstar, as I already own some fast refractors. From what I've seen from other people, it's relatively easy to install onto the telescope. But removing the secondary mirror and then placing it back after using the Hyperstar and re-collimating the mirror may be too much of a hassle for some people.
Hi Kwasi What Thousand Oaks Solar Filter will work with this scope.Or what type do you use.
Would an EQ6-R pro carry this 9.25 with a guide system and maybe a mono camera with accessories ?
If I recall, the EQ6-R Pro has a 44 pound weight limit. That's the same limit as my Orion Atlas Pro (AZ/EQ-6), and it holds my 9.25 with accessories well with some room to spare.
Great video I am undecided on the 8" or the 9.25 scope am worried if the larger 9.25 scope is a bit heavy for my Skywatcher eq6r-pro for deep sky imaging.
From what I've noticed, the Skywatcher EQ6-R Pro has the same weight capacity as my Orion Atlas Pro (or Skywatcher AZ/EQ-6) at 44 pounds, and it holds the 9.25 pretty well. So you can't go wrong with either the 8" or 9.25". It's just a matter if you want to sacrifice aperture for a lighter weight.
C 9.25 Edge HD is AWESOME! How well does the mount handle the OTA? How is pointing accuracy? Thanks for the review clear skies to you.
Thanks! The mount used in this video is the Orion Skyview Pro. I use it for visual observing and display purposes. For astrophotography, I use the Orion Atlas Pro, and the mount handles the telescope pretty well.
That's a nice telescope. I wouldn't own anything larger than that.
And do you use this telescope for nebulas and galaxies or just for planets?
I started using the EdgeHD 9.25 for the Moon and planets, and it did an excellent job! So far with deep space objects, I've only imaged galaxies with it, but I also want to try some planetary nebulae and globular star clusters eventually. Hello, sir. I found your video amazing, with your explanations, and your images at the end are amazing. I do have a question: I am planning to shoot images of all the planets and the sun, so I can have them printed to hang in my garage, in order from the sun to the last planet. Would this telescope allow me to image the planets and then have the images blown up to a 10x13 and the images be crystal clear? I know that seeing matters, but I'm am assuming the seeing is excellent.i could handle an 8x10, but I would prefer the 10x13. Any advice you could give would be very appreciated. Welcome to the AstroPark Kevin! Given that you have a great location with excellent seeing conditions, you should be able to use the 10 x 13 dimension and have a good image in my mind.
@@AstroParkAstrophotography oh ok. That was a typo on my part. Sorry about that. I live in NC, so the humidity in summer is a bitch. But, I plan to check out a site over the winter that is right on the Pamlico Sound, and is showing as a Bortle 2 on the light pollution map. I looked at the artificial brightness which was showing at 5.12 on the map. I am hopefully the seeing conditions become much better during the winter. Thanks for the response!! As long as I can get a minimum of 8x10 is great.

Is this a versatile telescope for both planet and deep sky?
Yes, it works for both. As I mentioned in the video, the three configurations that the scope can be used in will fit a variety of different types of deep-space objects, and the standard F/10 configuration works well with the planets.
This scope is 3000$ now. wow, paid 2000. and I don't even use it. Also, that scope has optics in the baffle tube as well. FYI.
I got mine new for about $2100 at the time if I remember correctly. You're correct about the optic in the baffle tube, as that's the built-in field flattener.
