Many cats also don't like to drink where they eat, as in the wild their food may contaminate the water! Hence why those double-bowls don't make sense for many cats at all. Our cat Lola rarely ever drinks from the bowl of water we have for her next to her food, instead she prefers the plastic jug of water that my mother uses to fill up her steam iron. It was left out one day and Lola started drinking from it, and now it is part of her morning routine, she will go and visit my parents in the morning and sit on my mum's dressing table and meow until one of them goes to fill the jug up for her. She gets her face right in there as well its hilarious! at least we know she's getting plenty of water!
My cats wouldn't like drinking out of their bowls but loved to try drinking out of glasses when we sat them down, so I started getting a glass of water, pretend to drink some, then set it down on the floor and start doing something else. We'd then soon see one of the cats drinking from the glass.
A good tip is to not put the water next to the food, as odd as it sounds, a lot of cats don't like water that's next to their food bowls, especially as they can be messy eaters ending up plopping bits of food into the water introducing contamination...
@@twocvbloke I agree with that and from now on if I get another cat I will do that, but with Lola that's all she's ever known and it doesn't bother her. Thank you for making this video! My cats are 1 year old and one of them drinks a lot of water but the other one barely drinks any other water. So thank you this really helped me get them to drink more water!
My cat is a great drinker. Now. She got super constipated several years ago. After treatment, the vet said we needed to encourage her to drink more. So we got her a new bowl (wide and shallow) and she gets fresh filtered water twice a day with ice cubes. We can’t use the ice cube tray for ourselves without her demanding some for her bowl, too!! We talked multiple times about getting her a fountain, but she likes to lick/est plastic so it has to be made of ceramic, ideally. I’m not even sure she’d use it at this point, either. She’s such a creature of habit that I wonder if she’d adapt to a fountain. She’s 16 now, so I’m always fearful of trying to change too much of her world.
I needed this video so much Tony is 12 weeks old but I've only seen him drink from his water once! I only feed wet food I mix in water, I've got a fountain but I'm going to get another for his favourite hangout spot thanks so much for the tips!
Love the geriatric kitties. Hopefully your vet has some tips. My vet taught me how to give IV fluids to my 20 year old boy. He plumped right up and came to life when he’d had a treatment.
@@mindful47 I know this isn’t good for all cats, but for mine we give her moist food whenever she seems hungry, and we keep dry food out for the other cats. Now I know some cats will just keep eating the dry food so you have to not keep it out but it works for mine.
@@mindful47 I mixed equal parts water and wet food for my geriatric kitty, so it was drinkable rather than chewable. Also, the vet prescribed renal food, which made sure the nutrient balance was correct to support the kidneys and prolong life.
I just wanted to say thanks for giving me the push to order an additional fountain for my rescue cat. I’ve only ever had 1 fountain but my cat only drinks water out of the fountain and barely ever out of the additional bowls in the rest of the house. I hope I the additional fountain helps since she seems to get occasional constipation despite eating a can of wet food (she always wants some dry food and haven’t been able to get her off of it completely).
I used to put Tigger's water bowl on top of the tub(near the faucet, but outside of the curtain) in my master bathroom. That way, I could hear him drink and monitor his drinking habits. He loved it. I did buy a fountain but it was noisy and scared Tigger. What water I put in his bowl wasn't tap. It was filtered via Pur. He liked bathroom faucet, also, but I didn't. As long as he would drink, I was happy. Never had a problem with dehydration or diarrhea. Lucky, I guess.
2:44 This can also cause whisker fatigue in cats. It’s not good for them. They can get it by also eating out of deep food bowls, too. Shallow and wide for both water and food!
I have a cat who's obsessed with bottled water so I always have to share and every time I'm in the bathroom she taps the Dixie cups and there I am, filling a Dixie cup for her lol.....maybe I should try a fountain!
Can’t wait to try it. Was hesitant because I wasn’t sure where I’ll put it in my tiny flat. But for my 2 girls I’ll try anything!!! Will figure it out when it comes. 😻🤞🏻
My 11-year-old cat was diagnosed with kidney problems last year, having a water fountain has really helped her. After watching the video, I might buy a second one! There's a water bowl in the kitchen that my other two cats prefer, but adding another water source in our bedroom might be good. (I also have a senior, 13-yo cat and a 3-yo cat-that-still-thinks-hes-a-kitten.)
Literally just bought a water fountain for my two kitties.. not the exact one but one from Amazon for half the price lol I’ve been thinking about it for a while so thanks for the push 💛💛
My lovely kitty knew how to ask for water after turning her water bowl over and we did not notice.. she saw my sister carrying a water bottle so she ran to my sister.. hung to her legs.. then ran back to the empty bowl.. as if saying " give me some water " such a smart kitty! ❤
Thank you for the information, I also put water in my cats food. By chance, love the food plates for your cats, where did you get them? Thank you waiting for your next video
My previous cat loved drinking water from the tap, she played with it a lot. The one I have now only accepts water mixed in with food and I also but some cat milk from time to time.
one holy lesson i've got is that cats love to drink on a tall cup or glass. if you're wondering why cats drink water from your glass of water is because they prefer those! it's tall and narrow and it doesnt hurt their whiskers. my cat always drink from my starbucks cup (the tall white cup with a basic style idk ) so i gave it to him lol and put it on the floor and then now he always drink a lot of water from that cup!!!! I wash and clean the cup daily and make sure the water is clean and it's full.
I've found the best way to get my cats to drink water is to leave soup mugs of water around the house. I pretend to drink from them and the cats can't resist. Lol
Your cats are SO CUTE!!! 💕✨ My cat is a just barely year old and he’s super cute and friendly!! He doesn’t have any problem with water, but I can always use more Kitten Lady!✨
I don't know why I never thought of putting my cat Cosmo's kibble in water. I did it for the first time today - Cosmo's method was to drink the water as fast as he could so he could get to the yummy kibble :D it's starting to get hot here, so this is perfect timing. Thank you!
My cat only drinks from a human glass! He can be quite demanding if it isn't full. I sure love that little bossy-pants. Considering the size of puddles/chunks in litterbox, happily I'd say he drinks plenty.
I have both a cat fountain and a water bowl with attached reservoir. You need two sources of water because one may go dry and you may not notice especially in the summer. The cat fountain is essential and the one my cat drinks out of 90% of the time. My cat will use the water bowls for cleaning, grooming, drinking, etc.
What works for my fussy lass is a small plastic container on my kitchen bench next to my tap and every morning when I make my coffee I change her water too. Cold, fresh, and clean. She wouldn't drink it when it was next to her food. But she will drink, and always has, her lactose free pet milk from there, nnlever her water. She was emaciated when I rescued her. The pet milk started as a way to fatten her up, and a year on she still enjoys it and is a healthy weight so I'm keeping it for now
I fed to my cat big tubs of chicken livers that you buy at the supermarket. I'd mix in some dry food so he got fortified cat vitamins and it made a soft and pasty mush. He loved eating that stuff, and he got plenty of water out of it. It was also easy for him to chew and swallow because his teeth weren't so great.
Our cats simply play with water fountains, but absolutely love old dark blue ice cream containers. We have about a million scattered throughout the house and catios. I also save and freeze boiled chicken water (no salt or additives, just water from boiling chicken fillets) and they like this too. Warmed in the microwave preferably. Yes, they are very spoiled darlings.
I keep glasses of water in the bathrooms and usually refresh them when I'm standing there so he know's its new water. Mine also hates wet food and cat fountains so he gets wet treats more frequently.
This is great! I’ll definitely use these tips. Hannah, what wet food do you feed your resident kitties? I’ve tried looking through your videos and IG and can’t find your recommendations. Thanks!
We've been using a fountain for a bit over a year. It was very inexpensive and I WISH I had known about it much earlier. Although I was concerned about them using it, cats (and dogs!) immediately took to it and have significantly increased water consumption by using the fountain, although we have always supplemented with water in their food.

You might be able to make something using a fish tank pump
Great tips! Thank you! ☺️
My 17 year old, sits on my face when he is hungry. Lol and he drinks out of the flower pot.
I needed this video so much Tony is 12 weeks old but I've only seen him drink from his water once! I only feed wet food I mix in water, I've got a fountain but I'm going to get another for his favourite hangout spot thanks so much for the tips!
Thank you! This will help because I have a 19 year old cat who won’t always drink
Love the geriatric kitties. Hopefully your vet has some tips. My vet taught me how to give IV fluids to my 20 year old boy. He plumped right up and came to life when he’d had a treatment.
How do u feed and take care such that your cat live such a long life ?
@@mindful47 I know this isn’t good for all cats, but for mine we give her moist food whenever she seems hungry, and we keep dry food out for the other cats. Now I know some cats will just keep eating the dry food so you have to not keep it out but it works for mine.
@@mindful47 I mixed equal parts water and wet food for my geriatric kitty, so it was drinkable rather than chewable. Also, the vet prescribed renal food, which made sure the nutrient balance was correct to support the kidneys and prolong life.
@@funfelines3003 do u cook for your cat or just use store bought wet food?
I’ve had a fountain for my cat for years, but a game changer for me was adding water to his wet food... he gets to eat his own fancy fish soup 😻
Thank you! Love the mention of us hooms drinking water too lol I needed that
Watching this 2 weeks after getting my cat a fountain,, he loves it.
Awhh i wish this video came a little earlier, because My cat had a huge drinking problem. But thank you for tips in the future 🤩
Thank you for these educational cute lessons!
Your cats are all beautiful furbabies. I enjoy watching your videos.
My mug from the bathroom sink is the most preferred water dish for my babies 🥰🥰🥰
2:44 This can also cause whisker fatigue in cats. It’s not good for them. They can get it by also eating out of deep food bowls, too. Shallow and wide for both water and food!
I love the Haroun meows throughout the video.
Buffy loves faucet water. She's a 13 yr old siamese mix. 😸❤
We have a bowl behind a door, a bit more hidden and one near their food. Changing them regularly seems to work for us! They LOVE fresh water ^^
Good timing with this HEATWAVE
My cat has a fountain that he is obsessed with it. After I’m done washing it he will stay by my side meowing until I plug it in. 🥰😂
Ever since I got a cat fountain my cats have been drinking 3 times more water!! It really works
Your cats are so healthy & beautiful!!
Great info. Just ordered the fountain. My cat and dog share a water bowl with no issues. But I thought I’d try the fountain, too.
My lovely kitty knew how to ask for water after turning her water bowl over and we did not notice.. she saw my sister carrying a water bottle so she ran to my sister.. hung to her legs.. then ran back to the empty bowl.. as if saying " give me some water " such a smart kitty! ❤
All of your cats are so adorable
Thank you for these ideas. You are definitely a kitty Angel.
Omg ur cats live like queens and kings😳🥺🥰
We have water fountains but mine prefer drinking from my water cup!
My theory is that they see us drink it, so they know it's fresh. Idk if this is true. Mine do it too tho. 1/3 will use the fountain lol
I've found the best way to get my cats to drink water is to leave soup mugs of water around the house. I pretend to drink from them and the cats can't resist. Lol
thanks im trying to get my cats to drink water this helped me
Your cats are SO CUTE!!! 💕✨
My cat is a just barely year old and he’s super cute and friendly!! He doesn’t have any problem with water, but I can always use more Kitten Lady!✨
I had the catit ( green with the white flower) and my cat would play with it like a splash pad. Might try the one you have as it looks more sturdier.
I don't know why I never thought of putting my cat Cosmo's kibble in water. I did it for the first time today - Cosmo's method was to drink the water as fast as he could so he could get to the yummy kibble :D it's starting to get hot here, so this is perfect timing. Thank you!
It's a valuable thing for us,I do like your video very much, thank you
My cat only drinks from a human glass!
I discovered my cats obsession with iced water! They love really cold water and I've told other people and it seems to work for them, too!
Lol I just discovered a few days ago that my cat had been drinking water out of the toilet bowl even though she has a cat fountain, I freaked out xD
The pet milk started as a way to fatten her up, and a year on she still enjoys it and is a healthy weight so I'm keeping it for now
I wish I'd seen this new before buying a fountain. That one looks much less disruptive and I like the shallowness of the dish.
You're a saviour Hannah😍 much needed video. Pls also share video of home made cat food which can be given to cats🙏
Thanks for the information and suggestions!
I dont give my cats dry food .And they drink a good amount.I also make chicken soup and they love the
liquid.
Thanks!
I turn the water on in the tub. My cat loves running water lol
We've been using a fountain for a bit over a year. It was very inexpensive and I WISH I had known about it much earlier. Although I was concerned about them using it, cats (and dogs!) immediately took to it and have significantly increased water consumption by using the fountain, although we have always supplemented with water in their food.
