  • Hampden Park is considered to be the ‘Wembley of the North’. Located in Glasgow, also home to Celtic & Rangers, the stadium itself is home to Queens Park FC and the Scottish National Football teams. It's also home to the Scottish Football Museum. But what’s the stadium actually like to go around? Is it worth doing the tour and museum here?

    FOOTNOTES -
    - If you havent’ already guessed, this was shot back in November at the same time as the Celtic/Rangers video. I had planned to do a comparison with Wembley, but obviously with this whole virus thing going on - it’s not likely I’ll visit that place anytime soon. So to keep making content, I've decided to make it as a standalone video.
    - Yes, I did say that I preferred the Hampden Park tour to the Wembley Tour. The main reason because you actually get to learn stuff as opposed to walking around a £1 billion soulless (albeit very nice) American-style bowl stadium. You’re entitled to your opinion of course, but I’m entitled to mine.
    - A couple of whiny bitches have appeared to try and 'correct me' by stating that Clyde FC is the 5th Glasgow team. They play in Cumbernauld, far out of the jurisdiction of Glasgow City Centre. Technically Hamilton Academical plays closer to Glasgow than Clyde FC. That'd be like saying Bolton Wanderers is a 'Manchester team' because they're in Greater Manchester. They're not - and nobody else thinks so either.

    The Kilmarnock exhibition is there as last year (2019) was the club's 150th aniversary (founded 1869). Making them the oldest fully proffesional club in Scotland, and I believe one of the top 20 or so oldest clubs in the world (even higher if you consider consistently proffesional teams that didn't go bust for a bit.

    Been here a few times, for a concert back in 2004 it was pretty nice. and the best one was a competition won to go on the field at half time during a semi final match. When it is empty is still ok, But when your on your Countries National Field, in front of your own team fans cheering YOU on to shoot into the Real Nets. Its another feeling entirely. The backroom staff and all are usually always nice and friendly and up for a laugh most of the time

Interestingly, I got to see a Dryborough Cup final way back when before the renovations to the stadium when it wasn't an all seater. The reason Queens Park have the biggest stadium is because they were absolutely brilliant back in the 1800’s and won the first ever Scottish cup and used to get almost EVERYONE in Scotland coming to their games. So anyone confused about it this is the reason Hampden Park is owned by Queens Park.

    The thing about Clyde FC being a Glasgow team: when they were formed, the played in / near Bridgeton, in the East End, and they played there for about 20-odd years, but they then moved to Shawfield Park, which was in-between an area of Glasgow called Oatlands, and a Lanarkshire town just outside the city, called Rutherglen.
    At some point Rutherglen became incorporated into the Glasgow Council area, so a lot of people thought of Rutherglen as being in Glasgow, but Rutherglen has since reverted back to being seperate from Glasgow (I dunno which council boundary it's in now), but alongside that, Clyde didn't move to Cumbernauld until about 1994, so even though they play there now, they kinda are and aren't the local team, and they kind of are and aren't a Glasgow team :-)
    A side note, too:
    Rangers aren't a team from the West. Anything on the southside of the Clyde is in "the Southside", so Rangers are a Southside team. I suppose South West, to be precise.
    Also, Partick are more the West team, as they were founded in Partick, which is one of the areas in the West of Glasgow (but don't believe anyone that tells you Partick is in the West End. They're just trying to make themselves feel better 😂), even though they do play at Firhill Stadium in Maryhill, which is north of Partick.
    And then there's Queen's Park, who a lot of people would are "the real Southside team" ’cause they have more of local feel than Rangers do.
    And don't forget the amateur and junior teams dotted around. For example, BSC Glasgow (Broomhill Soccer Club Glasgow) play in bloody Stirlingshire, about an hour's drive north of Glasgow.
    Glasgow's a bit confused about its boundaries. 😂

      Oh yeah, I think you would have had an amazing time for sure.
      I definitely recommend Celtic Park - that's probably the best one you'll do all trip. Not sure about Murrayfield, Easter Road and Tynecastle ... I've not done them yet. But as soon as I do, I'll post it so that you can make a more informed decision as to what to do when you finally re-book!

      The Johan Cruyff stadium is nice, but the 1937 built “the tub” or Feyenoord stadium is nice too! That’s where Dutch cup finals are held every year and the final of Euro 2000 was played there along the Final of Europa League 2002.

    On your next trip to Glasgow, walk a few hundred yards up the road from Hampden to what's left of Cathkin Park. Maybe you can get someone from the Third Lanark Supporters Club to tell you the strange sad tale of what happened to their club (see Wikipedia). Also, you can pop in to see Queen's Park's new home at Lesser Hampden (right next door to the Natipnal Stadium).

    • @UltimateBucketList
      @UltimateBucketList  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did see Lesser Hampden whilst driving around. I think I read about Third Lanark and the fact that Cathkin Park is largely in disrepair?

    • @WDH59510
      @WDH59510 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@UltimateBucketList largely is putting it mildly. The stand was set alight by vandals and demolished about 40 years ago (I used to go past Cathkin as a teenager on my way to Hampden in the 70s). What's left are some banks of terracing, part of the boundary wall and some crush barriers. As you'll see on TH-cam, there are trees growing out of much of the remaining terracing. I believe there are still some amateur sides which play the odd game at Cathkin although Third Lanark Amateurs play elsewhere.

    • @UltimateBucketList
      @UltimateBucketList  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope. According to the tour guide, they present the real cup to the team when they win it, and then they immediately take it back and lock it away in its case. They then give the replica out to clubs and it gets returned when the next final is coming up. This would make more sense as this is how the English FA do it.
