Adrian, thanks so much for doing this detailed video instruction series!!!!! My '13 STI has this same annoying leak (87k miles) and I've been thinking of doing this same upgrade for some time now. Great video for us home garage mechanics!!

I just did this for the third time, a little tip for everyone where the steering shaft bolts to the rack... leave both top and bottom bolts in. Loosen the top one just enough that itll slide up and down the splines. Loosen the bottom one as much as you can without the threads coming all the way out. Take a cold chisel and spread the U shaped part of the bottom U joint out, and leave the cold chisel right in there. The rack should slide straight in and out. If it is fighting you, loosen the bolt a little bit more to make sure the bolt clears the splines... Also I just disconnected the banjo bolt on the power steering pump and the hose clamp by the passenger strut tower and pulled the lines out with the rack to avoid those horrible flare fittings

I follow the FSM and you're right, sometimes it asks you to do stuff that doesn't make any sense. Great job on changing the Steering Rack.
On my '05 OBXT, I have this weird grinding noise while driving and turning left at full lock, sounds/feel like dragging/scraping a metal pipe on the floor. I'm not sure yet if it might be the front wheel bearing or the steering rack.. Really appreciate you documenting everything so well for those who might try this in the future.

Was your rack and pinion (new) zered or centered from factory?

Hi, I had some shop check my vacuum lines for leaks and I think they changed the routing of the vacuum lines in front by the alternator, could you do a video or show the stock vacuum lines and their correct routing?

15:35 what allowed you to have enough play to pull the steering knuckle off? Is it because you removed all the bolts from underneath and it dropped down a bit? I want to replace the seal on that shaft and don’t feel like pulling the whole steering rack out to do it.

So ive been through a similar issue twice once in a grand am and once in an impreza. So the 2 lines connected to the rack in that tight area are the feeder line and return hose coming from pump and to reservoir. Only way to get those lines without taking whole rack out is to get a crows foot socket fitting that fit and a 2 ft or more extension rod. Go right in over the tierod from the wheel well and you can usually get it. Still can't find a video on the replacement of just those two lines. Guess everyone just replaces whole rack

Is there a vid or write with pics of you or someone doing that? I can't seem to get the way you described. Unfortunately I think I'm going to have to drop the rack and pinion.

@@znismo1 sorry i dont but the cars i did it on were a 11 impreza 2.5i and a 01? I believe grand am. The grand am i had to take one of the plastic wheel well covers off in order to get at it at the proper angle the impreza was a bit tighter and i did slide the inner tie rod boot back and managed to get at it little turn at a time if you have the spare time and area to drop the whole rack would do that to make sure you get that old line off and clean the opening so the new one doesnt leak. But ive always been the type of person to say theres gotta be a different way to do that and manged to do it. The first one i did in my friends shop and he couldn't believe i acctually managed to get it he was prepping to drop the whole rack with me and left for 20 mins and came back and i had it off .

If you had removed the outer tie rods you could have gotten it out.
