You are an amazing person! I've been watching videos for hours for my Gravely 52 XL zt. This video has by far been the best and most helpful. I appreciate you very much and I will definitely come back here when I have anymore issues with this damned mower of mine! My father died a year ago. He was great at small engine repairs and he taught me so much, BUT I always refer to TH-cam just to be on the safe side! Thank you Sir!

I’ve been dorking around with this silly dead mower way too long until just now. All of my searching on small engine sites has been frustrating with explanations that were overly complicated. I appreciate your clear and simple troubleshooting explanation.
Also…mind blown at your mastery of sight-impaired skills. Just wow.
I’m playing your video for my 93 year old mostly-blind (macular degeneration) grandma to motivate her to try to do more things

Thank you sharing your video and testing procedures. I have the same starting issue. I did the same test but while checking the gray wire and turning the ignition switch it did give me a beeping sound indicating power. Based on that test my next step is to test my ignition switch.

I had problems getting my Gravely Zero Turn ZT 60 to start. I watch numerous videos about this very topic with no results. I contacted the dealer and he suggested it was the battery. Took the battery in and had it tested and it was good. So he said it was an electrical problem. Gave me various scenarios and they didn't pan out. Was about to get them to take it in the shop which would have been expensive. I came across your video and got my tester and tested it and sure enough it was the problem. Took the old solenoid in and he wasn't confident it was the problem. He tested it and sure enough it was the problem. Got a new one and my tractor is up and running.
I am a pastor of a church and this past Sunday I was preparing to preach about how we treat people of other races and handicap people as less useful. We too often judge things this way based on what I call the package it comes in. We do the same with people. As your video began I didn't realize you were 100% blind. Part way through I caught that and I thought of my sermon - how we would avoid the video based on the package it comes in. It made the perfect introduction to my sermon on Sunday. I am amazed at your knowledge and how you were so able to take one through the process and solve their problem while others with sight still complicated the process. Hats of to you my friend.
You may not have sight but your insight into this problem was amazing. Keep up the great work knowing there are people like me who so appreciate your expertise.

No one's laughing at you friend! You are amazing! I found you because my Gravely will start with jumper cables on, run fine until I take jumper cables off then it dies... I have no idea what's going on... If problem with any fuses, relays or solenoid I figure it wouldn't start even with jumper cables... But it does just fine starting with jumper cables but dies quick as you take jumper off....?

@@NoSightNoProblem yes sir, your input got me thinking on battery power. It turned out the starter relay relies on adequate voltage to hold the relay on. My battery was too low to push enough volts through it. Replaced the battery and it's running good as ever.👍

I have this same mower and after mowing the yard yesterday I shut it off and when I went to start it back it wouldn’t crank but I could hear the relay switch click after turning the key. Will you offer any suggestions on what may be the issue? I checked the fuse and it is still good. Also is there more than one fuse?

Steve, I have a similar mower. A gravely zt50 with the 691v Kawasaki motor. When cold, the mower starts fine. Once I’m running for a while and turn the mower off it has a hard time starting. I get a loud buzz noise. I’ll have to turn the key several times to finally get it to turn the motor over and start. It seems that the starter doesn’t have enough umph to turn the motor. Is the starter bad?

  • @johngatsby1473

    Man....I'm stumped.
I automatically replaced the solenoid on my gravely zt1740 so....I know the solenoid isn't bad. All fuses good and tested for continuity. Brand new battery.
When I go to crank it.....the only thing you hear is that little solenoid on the bottom of the carb.....the big solenoid doesn't make a sound.(the one connected to the starter) I'm not getting 12 volts to the small wires that come from the key switch which would activate the solenoid. I bypassed it and it tries to start. Having said that.....there's a relay next to the key switch and I hear it click but it also goes to that red knob thing that has to be pulled up to start.
    Any ideas?
I just bought this at an estate sale so I'm sorry for not knowing the proper terminology.

Im going to get it running and sell it and just buy a new one with a warranty and be done.

I’ve had nothing but starting problems with my Gravely since I’ve had it..
Took it to the shop at least 4 times and every time they replace the battery and send it back..
I was a mechanic in the Marines so I know it’s not the battery 🤦‍♂️
This thing, even with it hooked to my truck with jumpers is hard to start sometimes…
It almost feels like the timing is off or something..
It’ll turn and then hit a hard spot and won’t budge..
Someone told me that putting a fuel shut off valve in the inlet side of the fuel line may help?
    Any insight is greatly appreciated
