Son of a Bear thanks so much that really does mean a lot. It’s been so long since I’ve been able to afford time to make some films and I’m hoping to make more!!
I felt like I was sitting around Pat's fire ring, which is a very special place for me. Great film, great subject, great project. Would happily contribute to a crowd sourced episode 2. Long live Sloyd!
Great film Alex, really enjoyed it. Pat's re-connection with himself and nature shines through in his being, just how natural he looks sitting in that place surrounded by nature. He is in his element, beautiful view of a man who has found himself.
So well done. It makes me want to sit outside and carve a spoon right now. You with Patrick do a great job of discussing the lifestyle and what "wealth" really can be.
hah! Pat has a great sense of humor. I had a hard time editing this as I didn't want to change any context as ...this is Pat! :) Too many things are edited to glam it up, but I'm anti glam!
What a fantastic film, loved hearing Pat's story. I've admired his work from afar for so long. Well done Alex, really well put together and looking forward to the next one!!
Mike Perkin thanks!! You’re totally getting what I’m putting down. There’s a lot of buzz and marketing with any hobby turned into a job which drives me bonkers. I think being so honest has hurt me business wise but I guess it doesn’t matter. It’s about the craft and hands that’s it :) Thanks for the comment
Excellent !! Great job on everything ! Wouldn't he be a great guy to sit down with and just have a few beers and enjoy a night of conversation !! Alex keep on producing !! 10 stars my friend !!
Well, well, done! What a enjoyable video to watch. There needs to be more films like this being made. Hard to describe but it was peaceful and calming to watch. What an amazing choice pat took but what a great life to live. You Alex are an amazing carver and film maker! Keep doing what your doing and spreading the positive greenwood carving goodness! Thanks again for such a great film!
Thanks so much for everything you said, that means a lot. Your comment is exactly what I had hoped to accomplish. Some real talk, story telling, but also peaceful and calming to watch. Cheers Shaun!
It was a great pleasure to watch this film it reminded me why I started in the first place I still fall into the hobbyist slot and may never go beyond that but the love of making is what keeps me going. I look forwards to the next installment of this project.
Hey thanks so much, and for your honest opinion as well. Thats why I got into carving and traveling. To talk with other people and why they do what they do. There is nothing wrong with carving just for the love of it. Really that's what I do and Im lucky people want to buy some things. But to be honest, its so much work to sell and market. The fun part is getting lost in a spoon for hours! :)
Beautiful film Alex! Wonderful job by Pat keepin it real - which for anyone who knows Pat - knows that he wouldn’t be any other way. 🤣 You know where I am and I am always willing to help out in anyway - grip, lugging stuff, second camera man (I did 12 years doing weddings and small commercial stuff), lighting, etc. Anyway - great job and I am thrilled you got this released. Nick Spittler thanks for writing and the kind words. It’s a long story about my hiatus with filming, mainly because of a house fire four years ago and then my couch hopping and being poor. But I hope to figure out a way to help fund these films as this one took me three weeks to complete which takes time away from my carving. So I appreciate that you’ve been following patiently and still remember me! I sometimes wonder if I’m relevant anymore on TH-cam haha!
@@alexanderyerks oh hell yeah you are still relevant! Sorry to hear about the house fire, I didn't know. Only three channels that I watch the videos repeatedly, Northmen, Mr. Chickadee and yours!
I just watched this again for the second time and it was well worth it. This kind of content is really special. Especially starting it out this series with someone like Pat, who is just so no nonsense and authentic about the way he approaches this craft. I hope this in some small way encourages you to make more of these videos Alex, as they are a great asset to any of us who would like to learn more about how others approach what they do.
Hey thanks so much for what you said. Means a lot that people like yourself totally get what we're putting down. I am definitely planning to make more. I have a whole list of really exciting people ready to be filmed, that I think are really precious to the craft movement. Some who have never been filmed before. It's just that covid kind've threw a monkey wrench in my plans. I also have to figure out a good way to get some funding to make it easier. Believe it or not, even if you own the camera gear and audio equipment it still costs money to produce something. But when it's done.. it's really fun to share! Thanks so much -Alex

So good to hear your ramblings, Pat, and I'm still using your spoons not only to cook but to study. The bowls I get, but the quality of your handles...I'm just not there yet. Makes me wish I had made the last gathering at your house. But I'm determined to get there one day. I carved a cherry and a hard maple cooker a few days ago. Thinking very hard about full-time. Driving the Amish keeps me afloat with my social security. I have plenty of wood and more time than most. Thanks to you and Alex for this simple and inspiring video. Look forward to more, Alex.
Thanks for the kind words, and your thoughts. Part of the reason I'm doing this is to encourage more honest conversation and to build up some community in the carving world thats separate from the new trend of over marketing and all that jazz. There will be more gatherings, and Im planning some of my own as well so maybe I'll see you at one at some point. Keep on carvin! -Alex
Excellent episode, Alex!! Cannot wait for the next one. Pat's surely living my kind of dream. I often think about quitting the rat race but don't feel established, skilled, or confident enough in my ability or vision to make it happen. I feel the weight of responsibility towards my family who rely on my income... Maybe someday i'll hatch a plan that will work for me, as well as one my partner would be on board with as well. Until that day slÖjd will continue to be my private passion, I just started to try and sell some of my goods as a test to see if I can make a real go at this. Fingers crossed.
Whittling Stuff thanks for writing and the kind words. It’s not easy to show vulnerability and show true honesty. I’m very careful with my carving as now it’s my full time job and it would be a shame if I worried about the money part of it. I never want the reason why I started carving to change. I’ve seen a lot of people go that route and lots focus on profit which is understandable but it changes it, not just for them but for others too. I think about the tool makers for example and how that dynamic as changed some things for us all. But you have to do what makes you feel good and feel right. I think that simplifying your life so you have more time to carve is a good thing! Often the handful of us who do this full time romanticize this craft a lot which makes so many want to quit their jobs but I’m not sure if that’s a good thing. Or a bad thing. 🤔 but it’s an interesting topic.. hmm
@@alexanderyerks Great thoughts, Alex! I could discuss these ideas for hours. I 100% agree with you that sloyd is medicine, I should have started with "Hello my name is Meg and I'm addicted to sloyd" or "trust me I'm a doctor (of sloyd) " I believe what I'm truly after and what would make me feel good is community. It's hard to get into the discussion in this big technological world. It's not even about making any money, but more making connections with other people. I think our world has drifted away from handicraft when we need it most. It's food for the soul. I hope to make some real life connections this summer at Pat's irregular spoon gathering. I've also been trying to cultivate a spoon club of sorts here in Buffalo I'm calling it 'Spoon Social' . I think spreading the sloyd joy is where it's at! ✌️
Thanks Mike! I hope I can too. It's a bit hard to explain to some as people just say "oh just film it, you can make it on your phone" but to make something proper, with my name on it, and to do the craft justice, I want to put in the effort to do this right. So I appreciate your words and I'll try my best to get this project going.
Thank you for this Alex! So so good. And thanks Pat for sharing! Can’t wait to see more. I really dream to do this full time. We are decreasing our needs and simplifying life to help make it happen. Thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks so much for the warm words. Its not an easy life not to discourage anyone wanting to minimize their lives and live more simple. But in doing so I have made my life complicated in other ways. Being on social media everyday drives me nuts. I plan to make a film of myself talking about the pros and cons. It's not for everyone but I love what I do. But I also make very little money. Which makes it hard to set aside time to make more films like this so I hope by spring I can put out the next. Thanks for the great comment.

Karl Newman hi there, thank you for asking. In this age, most people don’t they just assume. I really appreciate that. Sure thing I’d love ya to share it. Maybe copy and paste some of my description over so the context is there and a link to my blog? Just want to make sure people know where to find me and all that jazz. Just please don’t re-edit the film as it’ll lose important context. Cheers!!
I’m on Facebook (Alexander Yerks) yah me so I can check out the group :)
@@alexanderyerks: I linked directly to your You Tube so that viewers end up here and see that you made it and all that you say about your film series... the link to The American Green Woodworking Association FB page is: facebook.com/groups/2572280836131551
What brand of hook knife to you use or prefer.thanks
Fantastic! Really enjoyed hearing about the Ogre from the Ogre :) But is Ogre correct? There's definitely BigFeets around, and Pat says he's never seen one... BigOgrefeets... me thinks..lol
Hope there's more of these to come. You know exactly the elements we fellow carvers want to hear. There's not a better film maker to make these!
Richard Roberts wow that you for such warm words. Truly means a lot to me no was quite nervous to put this out as I put a lot of soul into it. Hoping to make another once I can put some funds aside to make it happen. Thanks so much!
See Pat carve. Carve Pat carve.

Never seen a bigfeets, but I seen a ogre a few times :-)
