+Derrick Spooger Deeply sad news.I saw him on TV during last World Rugby Cup in England
(final match Australia-New Zeland).Smiling, happy man.Who would have said
that I see him alive for the last time.
He was one of those players
because of which I became interested in rugby at the end of the 90s.The
biggest loss in the history of rugby R.I.P wonderful man!

RIP the one and only Jonah Lomu. An absolute honor to be a rugby fan and watch him live gracing the field with his talent. 50 years time the name Lomu will still be talked about in rugby circles all over the planet.

  • @gwilliams4674

There will never be another Lomu. He was the first global superstar in World Rugby, and his talents changed rugby forever. He had the flair of David Campese, and Saint-Andre, with the bulk of Sella and Pienaar. Regardless of whether you were an All Black fan or not, you couldn't help but enjoy seeing this guy motor home.

As his coach at the time said, "Remember rugby is a team game so all 14 of you pass the ball to Jonah". That about says it all.
I'm an Aussie, and I'm happy to say the dude was an absolute genius.

Amazing guy I have a lot of respect for him as the ONLY ALL BLACK who didn't run away to the dressing rooms when France put NZ out 43-31 in 1999. He was the only bloke that 'manned up' and stood out there talking to press and the fans. I hope his health is improving. I believe he never scored a try against South Africa in his career but running over Mike Catt was a highlight ;)Get well big man take care, respect.

Coming from someone who isn't a fan of rugby, you are as much of a legend as the peles and Muhammad Ali's. When I was a kid I would come in the house from playing football if New Zealand were playing, onlyto witness one of the most influential and iconic sportsmen the worlds ever seen!
You will be missed! Thoughts go out to your family.

  • @louispretorius7370

Yes, he did much for the game and for motivating people around the world. His size was not all that made him the player that he was, as there is many such players around today, his speed, his side-step and the way that he and players around him created the team-feeling, that was his contribution to the sport. The biggest legacy, however, was his partial recovery from the disease in 1999: from being bedridden, to learning to get up, to walk to run to play rugby and then ultimately in scoring 8 tries at the 1999 World Cup- that is motivation and discipline. My wish: stop comparing his size to players of today, as there was much more to him, truly, Jonah, bigger than most people playing rugby in size, but in stature, bigger than most created by God.

Still remember how you broke a lot of Fijian Hearts by running over the whole Fijian Team in the 1994 Hong Kong 7s Tournament... Despite that, you were respected and adored by many Fijians. The National Stadium was packed to capacity when you toured over with the Waikato Chiefs for a pre-season match with the Fiji Warriors... I will never forget that day... I love the try against France (at 4.38) where Lomu is like a pinball bouncing off players and then for good measure he hand-palms Benazzi onto his back - and Benazzi was a giant of a man, very feared international forward, and Lomu just throws him off with contempt.

You know what's scary about this video... It is this simple point. Back then Lomu was a freak, a big powerful fast freak and we loved him for it. Everywhere he was respected and feared. But what is scary is that now, today, his size, strength and speed is normal! Every top international team has a bunch of lomu type players in their back-line. Not saying they are all as good as he was, but his size was not normal back then and now it's normal.

+DAGATHire Sorry mate but don't think there is a player today who is as big, as fast or as strong. Players that might come semi-close are George North and Julian Savea and perhaps Israel Follau who are all decent players in their own right but they do not match Lomu in any facet.

    • @DAGATHire
      @DAGATHire 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

mightytriceratops My comment very clearly stated that his size is normal now. and my comment very clear states and i quote myself here "Not saying they are all as good as he was, but his size was not normal back then and now it's normal."
My comment was not and is not a reflection on a great man, representative and ambassador for our sport. My comment was clearly an observation on how rugby has changed so much, that every team now has huge players with speed and power playing in the back lines. But when Jonah came on the scene 20 years ago this was not normal. My comment was not about him. it was about the game and how it has changed. I will not be drawn into a fight on this. i will not disrespect his memory on the day of his death by having my comment twisted into something else.

I am so sorry to say this but Jonah Lomu has recently died. I am so so so very upset, he was my hero! Please spread the sad news. It is just coming to light here in NZ.
