Thank you so much for this! You and your pattern writer have a trust relationship. That is why once you find designers you trust, you want to make all their patterns. We certainly trust and appreciate you!! - Masha
Thank you for making this video! I'm sure it will help many beginners to try out even more advanced pattern because why not to dive in into a deep end LOL [I did that by crocheting a sweater right after I figured out how to crochet different stitches]. Personally, I didn't have any problems with understanding brackets and asteriks, I think more problematic were abbrevations and some unclear instructions in a few patterns. Also, I'm guilty of almost never doing a gauge sample, maybe sometimes when I crochet, but while knitting I don't think I did it more than twice. I think that people who can crochet/knit with just a chart are crazy skilled. I wouldn't be able to do that even if my life depended on it. I like written instructions as they are way easier to follow. Also I often like to find a video where I can see how some stitches or motives are done.
Thank you so much for this!! I really struggle with reading patterns. Maybe it’s because I am a slower, visual learner? I’m not sure…. But it’s always been a bit embarrassing for me, as I’ve been crocheting since I was 5. So I am very appreciative of the help. 💕❤️🙏🏼
Jayda thank you for doing this video, I've been crocheting for years and have always struggled with writen instruction. Once I'm finished a few wips I'll open my book and give it a try again 😊.
Thank you, Jayda, for this post. I will be getting back into serious crocheting in the near future after having been away for some time now, and you have explained some directions that I would have royally messed up had I encountered them yesterday. 🙂 (FYI: * = asterisk. Pl: asterisks)
Hi Jayda and Mr..happy Friday! I remember for me in the beginning the asterisk made me crazy..just like RS & WS..I still have to stop and catch myself..thank you for sharing this
This video was so helpful. Thank you so much. I am fairly new to crocheting and I can follow a video tutorial pretty well but when I have tried to follow a written pattern it could be very confusing. I think I will watch your video again and then try working from a written pattern. I think I will have much better luck and not feel as intimidated. ❤️
Tip for left-handed people, if you're crochet pattern has graphs, you read the first row of the graph left to right, the next row, right to left and so on. Not that this happened to me literally yesterday when the graph of a snowflake on my Christmas blanket looked reversed and I had to frog 18 rows of my project.
I've been looking for a Santa hat pattern with two peaks (double pom poms) for years. I'm hoping to find some help here. I made your Santa & ELF pillows a Christmas or two ago , so cute!💖🧶
Thank you, Jayda! Do you have a tutorial on how to read a crochet symbols pattern? I would love to learn now to read those too. I've seen a few tutorials online, but they weren't as thorough as instructions that you give.
How about a video about reading a picture chart of a crochet piece. The symbols for single, double, triple crochet, chain and slip stitch .. I kinda need a refresher on this.
Thanks, Jayda! I have a question: When you crochet a gauge swatch, do you use the same stitch pattern as the thing you are going to make? I have noticed the pattern doesn't always specify what stitch to use for the gauge swatch?
Hi Margaret! Typically yes, the gauge is often the pattern stitch (because pattern stitches can have very different tension). The gauge might direct you to "work 10 rows in the pattern stitch" and then give you a measurement that it should be close to.
I have encountered some patterns that are only visuals with explanations of the visuals. For example, a stitch with (a) line(s) with a line across the stitch. The notes will explain the stitch will be a double crochet.
Dear jayda I need your advice. I was trimming off my yarn tails in my granny squares and the tip of my scissors trim one double crochet stitche. 😮. And not sure how to fix it should I take the whole square apart ?. Is that my only solution. Can you gave me some advice. Please,
Eeee, oooh that's upsetting! It sort of depends on where the clip happened, if its the last row, you can just take out that row back to the broken stitch, tie in yarn and finish the row. If it's right back at the beginning, you want to take out that stitch and knot off both ends so it doesn't unravel, then create a new stitch (or stitches depending on what you need) in it's place and fasten off. Leave a long(ish) tail and secure the top of the new st(s) to the bottom of the row above.
I’m new and have stuck to videos as guidance to crochet a project. I’m so happy you have this video to learn how to read a pattern. Thank you 🙏
Me too!
I'm so happy to hear you found this helpful 🥰

I was really bad at NOT doing the gauge, but after several projects didn't turn out properly, I learned my lesson 😂

Those are graphs as opposed to written patterns. They're a neat way to compose a crochet design too!
I would for you to do something in knitting that is easy because I am basic knitting 😊😅
I will definitely see what I can do 😊
Not me working on finishing a fairly advanced pattern listening to how to read a pattern. 😅 We need more podcast type lives again. 😂
LOL, Summer zigs when she should zag... 😂
