I was planning on getting a ccw until the new restrictions came in. You can't carry most of the places you would want to and can be arrested for unintentionally printing. On top of the cost that really makes it not worth it. Luckily since I was a legal gun owner before the hql was a thing they gave me an exemption for that class.
I understand the concern, but to me it's still worth it. Not everyone is grandfathered in and everyone deserves to be able to defend themselves and restrictions can (and will/are) be fought in courts. I've been careful about how I dress when carrying to minimize printing (easier in the cold for sure) but even in the summer it's still quite possible. Thanks for watching!
Nice presentation. Another consideration against open carry, and perhaps more important than causing bystander worry, is that you become target 1 for a bad guy. Either he (or she) will target you for takedown during a robbery attempt (i.e at a store you happen to be in) or, your weapon becomes a target of opportunity to be snatched while you are distracted or not situationaly aware of your surroundings., such as may happen while you are standing in a line or gassing up.
Thank you Samurai-san! I wasn't sure how much to cover with conceal vs open carry, so think it might be worth its own video. To make it, I'd like to get a couple different open carry holsters first so I can show different retention levels/styles because that wasn't really covered in my class. Thanks for watching!
Not a bad idea for a video on the subject. The following link is a good video, IMO, regarding open carry and there are some interesting discussions in the comment section as well: m.th-cam.com/video/pX6rd026IZE/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUaV2h5IHlvdSBzaG91bG50IG9wZW4gY2Fycnk%3D
Thanks for the reminder about this video. I saw it when it came out. I'm just remembering what the instructors of the MD Wear & Carry class said. Good advice all around.
Sometimes I worry, so I'm so glad this video is helpful! Assuming you have the money and time for the classes and applications, I definitely recommend getting your Maryland Wear & Carry permit. Even though I went through Cindy's Hot Shots in Glen Burnie, I know there are a ton of great instructors out there. It's still weird sometimes carrying my pistol but at least I have one more emergency response tool at hand. Good luck and be safe out there. Thanks for watching!
This is so brutal from the POV of a person living in NC with land to practice whenever I want to. I wish it was easier for poor people to defend themselves there
It's frustrating. I can't say for sure if crime is on the rise or not, but there's people that live in struggling communities where illegal guns are all over and there's no legal, community-held deterrent against people airing petty beef out in public with bullets, or just getting robbed.
@bikerbobcat that's my problem when a state puts so many road blocks in name of safety. There is no right answer, either everyone has them and most don't know what they're doing or too many of the wrong ones have them and prey on the less fortunate
It is hell up here. To even be allowed to purchase a handgun, you have to take a class, a NICS check, fingerprinting, and pay for the permit. That's just to be allowed to purchase a handgun. Years ago, you were only required to watch a 30 min video, what I felt was ok. As of 10/1 new unconstitutional laws kick in that basically makes it illegal to carry even with a MD Wear and Carry permit. Basically you can't go into any building, even a friends home, without prior approval. Not just public schools, court houses, and what not. You can't carry anywhere without prior approval. Based on Bruen, this is unconstitutional because there's no historical precedent. Similar laws were already struck down in places like NY, but this commy state still pass the bill and signed it into law! The icing on the cake is that the lying Governor, during media interviews, keeps saying it's common sense gun laws and only spews what was already law, like not being able to carry in public schools. He doesn't say anything about how a permit holder will no longer be allowed to carry anywhere without prior permission.
I have a couple friends that live in NC, and as much as I'd love to join them, I do love it here in Maryland. The Chesapeake watershed is my family's home for many generations so I'd rather fix the permit problems here than run away. Cheers!
I'm so glad it was helpful! If you haven't yet, check out their 2nd location just opened on 175 in Severn, it might be closer to you. I haven't been yet but hope to soon. Thanks for watching.
I really enjoyed your presentation which is very simple, well presented and very informative. I would like to know where you bought your ammunition, that would be very helpful to me. Thank you very much for taking the time to give us such a remarkable presentation.
You're very kind, thank you! I buy in bulk from places like Ammoseek that searches retailers and lists prices. I also pick it up in my local stores and ranges if they've got a good deal on something.
If you plan on driving thru MD border states you should get a PA, Utah or Florida non-resident permits as well. I would also get liability insurance in case you have to defend yourself.
I'm still looking at the right kind of carry insurance or protection, and I'd love recommendations, especially from people that actually have had to use it. I DO know that Virginia respects MD wear & carry, though not the other way around. I haven't looked in to other out-of-state permits yet. Thanks for watching and be safe out there.
If you're a non-resident Utah permit holder, it does you no good to get a Utah permit to carry in PA. Like the FL non-resident permit, Utah's permit is good in DE, but not PA. You'll need to get a non-resident PA permit to carry there. NJ and NY are basically NO-GO States. You'll be good with most everything south of MD with just a MD permit. Even FL since they became a Constitutional carry State as of 7/1. But double check, just in case.
Hey, new sub! Appreciate the video, about to pursue my permit. Will definitely use Cindy's also, brother's neighbor is one of the instructors there. TC in Annapolis MD
Welcome and thank you for watching! I was just up at Cindy's last weekend and haven't had time to do my range report. (Spoilers, I'm super rusty and ran in to some sighting problems). Much love to Annapolis, my favorite place out there is Wild Country Seafood. Get some oysters and tell em Bobcat sentcha! (they have no idea who i am)
Hahaha I grew up on the bay but don't eat oysters. I've never fired a pistol in my life so definitely have to get to the range and practice a little before taking the course. 😂
Not since the Bruen decision by the Supreme Court. It took a few months for the Maryland State Police (issuing agency) to adjust their process but now anyone who is otherwise qualified can apply and get it. The "may issue" reason was why I never bothered - you had to spend all the money on classes and application and then still might be denied just because. Not anymore! Thanks for watching and be safe out there.
You're right, you absolutely can. HOWEVER! 1) Most people will think that's a rifle and freak out and call the cops. 2) Most people (in my area, anyway) will think you're a dangerous weirdo for open carry anything and call the cops. Both 1 and 2 also vote, so no matter what your rights actually are, when people open carry bigger, scarier looking things, even if it's their right to do so, they call unwanted attention to the rest of us and get those rights voted away entirely. So I genuinely don't recommend carrying an AR pistol unless things are bad enough to warrant carrying heavy hardware, and at that point you may as well just get your more accurate rifle, sidearm, plates and chest rig (which I need to put together). Thanks for watching, I do appreciate it. Be safe out there.
Not starting on 10/1, unless an injunction goes into effect on 10/1. Starting on 10/1, everything we know will basically be thrown out the window. If you want more info on this, google Maryland SB1.
I recommend never open carry. It makes you a target of law enforcement and criminals. Cops may mistake you for a crazy bad guy and criminals often shoot open carriers 1st when committing a crime or they may attempt to rob you of your weapon. Never give criminals time to plan an attack. CC gives you the element of surprise.
Great video! Is the shooting timed? If so, how much time do you get at each shooting distance and how many rounds do you have to shoot at each distance? Do you have to draw from your holster during the live shooting or do you just bring it up to shoot regularly?
Yes, the shooting at each distance is timed. I don't remember how much time exactly, but it was only a few seconds and that's what made me so nervous. At the real close distance it's no problem, you have to try to miss, but way out it gets harder and you lose time aiming. I think it was 4 or 5 shots at each distance and you can only have 8 rounds or something like that loaded per magazine so you were forced to do a quick reload at some point. I made it with plenty of time but my heart was really pumping, that's why I was laughing afterward. As far as holster, no this was just off the table/low ready. Cindy's Top Shots range doesn't allow you to do holster draw until you take their holster safety certification, which I will soon, so I can practice that too. Thank you so much for watching! If you're in Maryland, I do recommend this range and Wear & Carry course.
I don't think it's required to be timed. I took the WC class from someone else and it wasn't time. A friend of mine took it somewhere else and he's wasn't time either. I don't even think the distances that he showed are required. We shot at different distances than what was in this video. My friend said he was only required to shoot at 10 yards. I think the only requirement was that you had to score 70% minimum. BTW, I took a USCCA affiliated class too.. and we didn't get any book like he got.
Maybe I took some special variant of the class then? Mine was definitely timed -even though it was plenty of time- and it was several different distances. Cheers!
Thanks for asking but I genuinely do not remember! If I did, it was the easiest thing in the world, and would have gone over stuff we talked about moments before. I'm a bad test taker so really hate them, and it must not have been bad enough to even remember. XD
I did not, so far I only have the MD. I've thought about getting other state permits, but I want to do more research. It might be a fun project to document costs and process getting my carry permits in all 50 states. Thanks for watching!
No, and I hope I didn't give that impression. As far as I know, you still need an HQL to purchase a pistol but I believe the Wear and Carry permit class counts toward the requirements. Thanks for watching!
It is a bit confusing. You are exempt, but you MUST go to the State Police website and fill out the HQL application. On the application you say that you are exempt because you have a Maryland CCW, enter you CCW lic#, and submit the application. Really, you just save the application fee and fingerprinting fee.
Worst part of all this is if you ever used your gun in a clear self defense situation your probably going to prison in the jack booted nazi state of Maryland. Luckly I live in Arizona where you dont need a permit and theres no gun registration
I don't know. This wasn't too far away and I don't think he was arrested. One can hope he wasn't. Thanks for watching. www.reddit.com/r/maryland/comments/1f5j1ak/employee_shot_killed_suspect_robbing_maryland/
