Hello Steve. Been watching for a year now. I worked for Cummins in Tampa Fla. For 43 years. Retired Jan 2024. You are right about the to sets of injectors. Also the camshaft injection timing The piston comperssoin ratios between the two engines. Also 365 hp will probably not be amount hp for the heavy loads that you haul.In the long run Cat might be the way to go. I be watching to see what you do.
Hey there Steve. I believe that Elaine may have a oring on a injector that's bad since she is so sluggish an smoking a good bet. I have had this happen before. Or throttle shaft is gummed up. Needs cleaned up. Just wanted to throw out a couple ideas for u guys . Hope it will help out . Thank u for all the content. An let's hope for a good election next week for us an our country.
@fsctrucking your sucking air in the fuel system somewhere, with the throttle lag, could be a fuel hose, the tank, could be the diaphragm in the anaroid valve. You might also want to run the overhead on that engine. It’s probably never been done before
Hey stave how are you doing today my on this beautiful day and I like watching your TH-cam videos and they are very educated and I like the content in I like the way you explain things to your viewers
holy shut my like actually made the number roll over.. ive been trying to dothat for ever. I always like as soon at I get notification there is new video'. Love Orwell and Steve, your pretty good too. Hi Chris and Jen love your content..
It is possibly a mini runaway because the motor is worn out. Basically it is getting oil in the cylinders and just enough to keep the rpms up. You might start thinking about an unframe soon. Also check to see if the turbo is leaking oil into the engine.
Hey Steve, I watched a video tonight with the knight Rider historians channel and they have a GMC Brigadier with a Cummins in it and Bay Area diesel rebuilt their fuel pump for free, lots of other channels have used them. They seem to do amazing work diesel Creek farm craft 101 and other channels.
cpl 1211 and 1210's when they are right and turned up they make insane power and are very responsive, they idle and drive like no other big cam had a 400 big cam 1211 decades ago use to be a bunch in Georgia that would build them to 500hp
Hey Steve! This might sound simple enough to do and it might work. If you already changed your fuel filter, take it back out of the truck and see if it is totally full. If it is not, then refill it all the way up and tight that sucker down as tight as you can because if you leave the filter halfway lose, it will do that. It is not necessarily the pt pump. Tight that full filter up real good boy. You will thank me later.
Bout time we saw the caddy again. I remember when those used to be everywhere on the road. The cummins is super laggy huh. It acts like linkage is sticky but its clearly not. It makes sense the excess air causing a delay on throttle up, but what doesn't make sense is it continues to rev up for a bit after you let off. You'd think it would bog a little if there is excess air and lack of fuel, or at least knock or chatter more. My guess is something to due with what meters the fuel in as you play with the throttle is sticking. The fuel gums up over time even with a stabilizer, becomes a gummy varnish as it breaks down. Off road diesel has a higher sulfur content, so if they were running that instead of on road that could cause some issues. Off road and #2 home heating oil are both red, but one has wayy more sulfur. off road used to be 75ppm while #2 heating oil can be 500 to 4k ppm depending on where you get it. on road and newer spec off road are 15ppm.
Just a thought FSC. You could (that is if you haven't already) talk to A.D.S ( Area diesel service) about rebuilding the injectors and the pump on Elaine.
Some of the exhaust pipe oily soot has to be from the extensive inappropriate use and will not happen with normal road use. Getting the pump & the injectors done is just common sense, a pain but to be expected on a truck which has seen 'proper' use and maintenance for some time. It is still a load better than one out of a field or a forrest.
you might want to look into an Air Dog fuel system. They will eliminate air in the fuel system. A little pricy but they do work. Will give you a little extra HP too. I have one on my N 14 Cummins.
Ah, good ole STC. Last one we rebuild, we figured the math for top stop internals in STC bodies is as close as you can get to the injectors matching (requires messing with oil galleys, valve grinds/ measurements). As for a working truck, I vote cat swap. The N14 mechanical we have can't pull itself out of a wet paper bag at 80k plus the Jake brake limitations with the STC doesn't make it worth it
If it's got a 833 CPL number , that miss will probably never come out of it. The lag is most certainly an air suction problem. Put some air pressure in in the fuel system and watch for bubbles , maybe 20 psi. Had 2 of those stc motors with the 833 CPL , both had a slight miss in number one cylinder, one a 400 the other a 365 . Changed everything on the 400 except Cam and crankshaft ,still a slight miss. Gave up and just ran it for years.
You know alot of folks have good things to say about Premco as far as PT fuel pump and injectors for big cam. Definitely a difficult call on what to do with that engine. STC and Low flow. Seems like alot of money to fix or delete or swap out.
Sucking air in the fuel system. If it uses a standpipe it could be cracked. Replace the fuel hoses and make sure the fittings match. I've seen fuel filters cause that problem.
Judging by all the smoke it's not burning the fuel and might have bad stc valve. Advance timing helps the engine burn fuel better and will have less emissions
Maybe the forward is to advertise this Cummins as a work in progress. Do that now and see if anything comes of it. Document what you have and the work completed. Someone else may be looking for this model and Hp so that would be a Win. Some people just have a developed sense of mechanical ability with these engines. Sell it with the trans. Repower with the 3406b and then standardize the power. The truck will be a reliable money maker like Orwell. All this effort for a small Cummins seems not a good choice. So, be cautious with the spending on this unit. I like the truck so keep at it.
It has a computer box next to the throttle linkage with the Cummins logo I had a truck that did something like that and it was water running down the wires and into the box replaced the box and looped the wires to prevent water from getting in and never had problem again
Pretty sure my dad had this issue on his old freightliner at one point. I recall it being a bad line or something? I was also only like 9 so I don't remember too well lol
@ your going to have a fortune in it and It won’t be reliable, can’t get parts when it breaks down on the road and it won’t be worth anything. Save your time and money. The caddy is worth a grand if it runs. I had a smart man tell me once, do you want to work ON the truck or IN the truck.
I like the trucks, they are a bit basic compared to European trucks, but I do like different, and old. The car though... not for me, I prefer my 2018 Toyota Avensis Estate (180bhp 2.0 Turbodiesel 6 speed manual), my 2000 Audi S3 Quattro (260bhp 1.8 Turbo 6 speed manual), and 1973 VW 412LS Estate (85bhp 1.8 Twin Carb 4 speed manual). Even the wife's 2014 Citroen C3 (115bhp 1.6 Turbodiesel 5 speed manual).
Those 365 were generally an under performing piece of crap when they were running like they were designed. You would be better off to build your BC2 or 3 and be done with it. Of course when you change to oider Bc, you will have to change to high flow cooling(new rad). Im with you on the Cat idea. Get yourself a 3406B and run the wheels off that FLD.
This may help me with my m11 cummins, it cranks over longer than it should before it fires up, and it sounds like that engine. It's done it since I bought the truck 20 years ago. My m11 is not an stc engine.
You have a lot of interesting questions I know a lot TH-camrs that rebuild a lot of old equipment and they use area diesel they rebuild injectors and soect them to the pump they will answer all of your questions so you can make a better informed decision everyone I know have pleased with them I'm just trying to save you some pain and money peace out
Jesse said if u get rid of all that extra part's that should not be on the truck it should run good. I asked him why they put so much extra [part's on that semi and have was like have no idea. He had a mechanic take stuff off a engine from a semi that we purchased for the company and it run's good now. Jesse said that he had to watch a few videos on what causes issues with the stuff mechanic's are having issues with. And a few time's mechanics would call Jesse and ask him. Since mechanics are young and they are good mechanic's. My grandma was like dam nice caddy wanna sell it. Andi said i think that car he is keeping.
Awwww man id take that truck anyday over those new ones. I prefer them 855s over that motor. Although very similar. Id delete all that garbage off it. Take it direct from pump to tank. Change the button and spring. Thatll bring that motor to life. Theres many tricks you can do to that motor. Also depends on the kinda driver you put in it.
Steve:: wondering, at MATS you interviewed the Cat rep.. I think he said it’s a remained block but not the rest of the motor.. how hard would it be to get a complete mechanical engine ?? have to send it off to be rebuilt before putting it in Elaine ?? I like the idea of a Cat swap,, just wondering how much trouble it would involve to get 1 ready to instal ??
Pretty Sure James Pretty went through this STC and deleted it on a engine build. He learned some hard lessons ,but prevailed in the end. Wasn't as simple as he thought. Give him a call, bet he can direct you., TGP
Hello guys, could the exhaust side impeller in the turbocharger be caked up like the exhaust pipe was? That might be causing the smoking, lagging, and hanging the throttle. Just brain storming, also change the fuel filters cause some one could have damaged or not replaced the seal.
Gots to say, really like Chris' dry humour, and btw he's a real mechanic.

Call Area Diesel Sevice. They are the best with pumps and injectors. They can tell you what pumps and parts you need.
area diesel service has a you tube channel.. I believe they are located in northern Indiana
@steamindemon3389 yes they do. I learned about them through C&C Equipment you tube channel

Can’t wait to hear what you guys figure out about what to do with the motor!!!
Had the same problem in a 180 Cummins. Been 50 years since then but we took the pump off and got it fixed
@fsctrucking your sucking air in the fuel system somewhere, with the throttle lag, could be a fuel hose, the tank, could be the diaphragm in the anaroid valve. You might also want to run the overhead on that engine. It’s probably never been done before

Good to see it rolling

Every old Cummins I've ever run in a truck there is always had a lag in them. Shifting was a learning curve 😂
I'm learning just like you
It is possibly a mini runaway because the motor is worn out. Basically it is getting oil in the cylinders and just enough to keep the rpms up. You might start thinking about an unframe soon. Also check to see if the turbo is leaking oil into the engine.

You got to love customer service outsourcing. Makes a 5 minute conversation last an hour.
Steve you can put a n14 manifold on it and run a n14 charge air to air they got potential
I learned something new today and it’s a good day when you learn something new!!!
@fsctrucking I love the hood prop for the caddy
cpl 1211 and 1210's when they are right and turned up they make insane power and are very responsive, they idle and drive like no other big cam had a 400 big cam 1211 decades ago use to be a bunch in Georgia that would build them to 500hp
First time i am actually sitting when a new video cames out, gotta say i enjoying watching the old school trucks running
Ezrider, swapped out the cummins in Ole red his 1983 359 for a cat, he said it was more expensive than he thought it would be, but it was worth it.
Put a CAT in it sounds like a good idea!
You have some tough things to figure out, hope it is not too costly🤩👍👍
Never heard or knew that before
Good evening yall
Hay Steve
I was thinking about red fuel in the last video when you mentioned it was a farm truck and used only on the farm Steve!!!
Yep, that can get expensive if Revenue Agents find red dye in your fuel. 🫣
I know you will get Elaine running again. Like how you two put your heads together to figure things out.
Hey Steve! This might sound simple enough to do and it might work. If you already changed your fuel filter, take it back out of the truck and see if it is totally full. Start using ether and the engine gets addicted to it. Lol.
Sure does.

I’m thinking about biodiesel fuel was used at onetime and parked. It will probably need a pump cleaning.
Pretty soon the pump will be pulled and sent out.
Anything to do with diesel get ahold of Area Diesel Service. Top notch company.
Am I the only one patiently awaiting the WE FIXED THE STARTER video?? 😂😂😂

Hey Steve, Chris, and Jen happy Halloween
Check out the cam lobes worn down could cause excess smoke even spin an insert would cause a lot of smoke.
You know alot of folks have good things to say about Premco as far as PT fuel pump and injectors for big cam. Definitely a difficult call on what to do with that engine. STC and Low flow. Seems like alot of money to fix or delete or swap out.
The process of elimination. Even trying something that you may not think has an effect. You can't truly eliminate it as a problem unless you try it.
Sucking air in the fuel system. If it uses a standpipe it could be cracked. Replace the fuel hoses and make sure the fittings match. I've seen fuel filters cause that problem.
There all good when they run and junk when there broke
I remember when those TFC units started appearing in those 76 truckstops years ago. Glad to see you restoring it. Whats your plans for it by the way?
Judging by all the smoke it's not burning the fuel and might have bad stc valve. Advance timing helps the engine burn fuel better and will have less emissions
Hello Steve and Chris
Hello! Haven't seen you here for a bit.
@fsctrucking Lately I been working alot
Tell Jen I said hello as well!
@@DaniArceneaux I will!
It’s easy to say yank it out and replace it with a 3406 that way both trucks have the same engine. But I know that is BIG BUCKS!
That is very interesting

Area diesel service might give u answers better then the idiots for dealers and probably know more about them also
O rings between filter adapter and gear pump could be leaking.
Im voting for a b cat swap but up to u. I love a good 425 cat!!
Those manuals are worth more than the truck and caddy combined 😂. Cut your losses and move on.
And buy what?

@@retired-pipefitter I was told the same about Orwell. Why are you even here?
Like to see the caddie burn out video.
Front wheel drive. And no, not with new snow tires.

ORWELL IS THE PERFECT TRUCK!
call tim and ask him what is up he has a couple freightliners

Like you said earlier, put a cat engine in it bruce wilson selling engines on his channel.
Wonder if any of the linkage could be bent somewhere
Check your cam, I had a follower go bad. It sounded just like that
Drop you a 500 horse cat in it will be cheaper and get rid of the off road fuel
Kind of sounds like it's sucking some air somewhere. Is it top draw, or bottom feed in the tanks?
That engine really smokes !
Fuel lines were our problem sucking ait
Air

Yes I know what he did. But the rocker arm geometry may be wrecking the valve guides.

It's possible crap caked up on the blades may create boost issues. But not from a dead idle.
You could probably run the rack on it it might cut down on all that smoke once it warms up
Those old Cummins don't have racks.
Run some teainey fluid in fuel filter
A cat is what I would do . Sell the 365 Cummins .. rocker arm geometry .
I don't know am I on LSD or did I say something about sending the pump and injectors to area diesel ?
Sounds like duse an a half
My vote is put a Cat in it.
Pulp Fiction / FSC videos
i dont even see the STC block on that engine
Hey love the show but why not buy something that is not a money pit and better taken care of
Sounds like it is sucking air into the fuel system.
why is your throttle pedal not by wire makes no sense it has an ECM whats the CPL on that Engine?

Sorry, but you sure look like Uncle Fester.
Been watching FSC for sometime and just can't get rid of that thought of resemblance. Lol!
