The 358 Peterbilt was built from 1968 onwards. Very stable vehicle and learned to drive on a copy of the Soviet Union made in the Ukraine, the Kraz, in the military. G5, Kraz and Ural were the vehicles we used back then. Laugh, you can see where you bought one. In 1976, I drove a longer 358 Peterbilt myself, after I had changed and crossed the border. My boss at the time had one as a replacement vehicle. Normally we drove the MAN Büssing, the Scania and quite honestly the Scania 140 was the best truck I ever drove. Good luck Rick, take good care of the truck, it will always serve you well. Stay healthy and stay the way you are. Greetings from Grankfurt. Gerold
IFA G5 mit Werkstattkoffer A Baujahr 1964 TH-cam · Militär- und Landtechnik Klaus Schröder 07.05.2023 by TH-cam Rick the old Peterbilt, was a great truck. No power steering, transmission, you learned to shift gears, always pay attention to the revs so that the machine didn't run away. It wasn't for nothing that he became a driver. Smile, only with strong arms could you drive in the mountains, with lots of bends and backwards, always looking in the mirror, or something was in the way.
What a project. There's a soft spot in my heart for those old Screamin Demons. I don't know that they were ever very good in a truck but always heard they were great in stationary power applications. Just wind em up and let em scream! Very cool engines regardless of how good or bad they were. I overhauled a 4-71 once and couldn't believe how worn out it was yet still seemed to run fine. I'd love to own one in a truck.
@@blythkd9017 A work truck I drove had a 4-71 , the truck weighed 35000 pounds , had an Allison automatic , I just pushed the pedal to the floor anytime I wanted it to move , but it would do 72 miles an hour on the straights , but only the first straight , if I slowed down at all and floored it again it would only go back up to 70 , but it always ran fine .
I just loved the 5&4 in my old 60s international 10 wheeler. I drove that thing through the Santa Cruz Mountains which ain’t no joke. I bet less than 5% or less of truck drivers can really handle a 5&4 like it was meant to be driven
@6:03 any glass shop will cut you the safety glass windows for that truck, it's just flat glass and they carry flat safety glass in almost every window shop out there you would have to have templates made without the rubbers in to know the exact size and you take it right to them they cut it you bring it back and install it, I myself would not install any class until you have all the paint work or prep work done in the window jams

Nice, if you could have pressurized the jug, it would have lit off much faster. I had a 8V92 runaway on me this past winter. It was screaming hard it was on an air start used to start aircraft. Diesel Fuel Injection Service in Portland, OR does a great job rebuilding injectors and cheap as well! You absolutely took some life of that starter. And pert near killed your group 31 batteries forever. I cut my teeth on driving screaming jimmies on slide back winch trucks. Seen them run backwards when idiots are rolling backwards and dump clutch on a hill and kill it but don't push clutch back in. And I drove a 5&4 on a hydro-seeder best way to drive a DEE-Troit is to put thumb on counter whack thumb with hammer and get in truck and start pulling gears hard between throttle smashes to the floor. Yes you can get glass custom cut to the size you need first and then they send it off to have it turned into safety glass. Now automotive front and rear glass is usually layered with plastic sheeting in between and molded together.
I am glad you are keepintg the 5 X 4. My favoritre transmission. twin stick with a 871 detroit you spent all day shifting. Got the old girl going never used a cutch anver scrached a gear. you get 2 thumbs up.
Glass is not a problem for that truck, anyone with real flat glass experience will have no problem cutting all new glass for the truck. when I was in high school my friends father owned a glass business and I worked for them for two years doing flat glass. We did a ton of glass on heavy equipment usually on job sites where the equipment was left and vandalized.
Back in the 80's I used to drive a Freightliner with an 8V-71 318hp Detroit diesel. It had a 13 speed trans and 4:11 rear ends. I used to run 4 western states hauling produce. On one trip I was headed down towards Brawley, CA from 29 Palms and I pulled over for the night along the side of the road. When I got up in the morning and started it up it quickly died and would not run. It had lost it's prime. I hitched a ride back into 29 Palms to a truck stop and purchased a quart bottle of gear oil and then got a ride back out to the truck. I used what oil I could in the hubs and dumped the rest on the ground. I found that the bottle would fit through the filler neck of the tank and I cold fill it with diesel. I then broke loose the fuel filters and filled them and then broke loose the fuel line going to the fuel pump and primed it with diesel. The truck fired right up and ran great after that! BY me saying it ran great means that it ran without a problem. It was still gutless as hell. Going up the Grapevine in SoCal I could get out and walk next to the truck! That was a second gear pull. 2 stroke Detroits are great in trains and power plants... they don't belong in trucks! At least the 53 or 71 series. Stay safe!

The old 71,s had a " rigid rack". If one injector hung up the engine runs at speed of the stuck injectors. Newer ones had a spring system to keep them from running away. Ahhh-- the old "screamin' demons"! They were quite popular back in the day. In the late 80's I had a 1970 L9000 tractor with an 8V71 but it was 350 hp because it had a turbo. Around that same time I had a '77 W900 tractor with a "silver 92", 475hp also with a big Garrett turbo sitting up on top of the blower. I pulled dump trailer with both of them, running right around 100k lbs. with gravel or asphalt. That silver 92 would run right along with the "4 and a quarter" Cats all day. Gotta keep the rpm right up there though or else they're dogs. 1800-2200. The L9000 had a 13spd. Roadranger, and the W900 had a 14spd. Spicer. Running heavy ya gotta use ALL the gears !!
I drove a 64 Kenworth bed truck back in the early 80's. 318 Detroit with a 5 and 4. It ran away on me once from a stuck injector. Got it running backward another time. It was a learning experience for sure
Make patterns of the windows out of 1/8 inch plywood, then take them to a glass shop and talk to them about your best options. The best option may be a laminated glass like we used in boats. They can also set you up with rubber.
Seriously ? It's starts running away and everybody runs away from the truck. I have never seen anyone do that before. Most people are prepared for it and try to shut it down... The term run away is for the engine, not the people working on it . This video was almost painful to watch between the engine running away, ignoring the locked up brake, and then the "drive". I drove truck for over 40 years, and the first truck I drove was a Kenworth W-900 with an 8V-71. They are gutless, make a lot of noise, leak a lot of oil, and the jakes aren't great either. Ether is your friend with a 318 in cold weather. I did drive a 358 Pete log truck that also had a 318. Fortunately the engine in that truck had some work done to it, so it ran decent back in the day. I absolutely loved that truck... I'm looking forward to seeing the changes. I was a little surprised that you are changing the frame.
Enjoyed the video, before you change too much on Eddie, you need to hook a trailer on and have Deniro back it into a dock. He needs the experience as to why those old steering wheels were so large, before modern power steering. Why all the old time truckers had huge arms.
I was laughing my ass off watching you run that beast around the yard with a locked wheel hahaha that thing is awsome!!! Interior work is A1 grease it up and run it!! Goggles are cheaper then a windshield!!
Love this truck and channel y'all are hilarious and make learning fun. Id love to see Eddie with an old air starter just because they sound badass lol.

Seriously ? It's starts running away and everybody runs away from the truck.
I have never seen anyone do that before. Most people are prepared for it and
try to shut it down... The term run away is for the engine, not the people working on it .
This video was almost painful to watch between the engine running away,
ignoring the locked up brake, and then the "drive".
I drove truck for over 40 years, and the first truck I drove was a Kenworth W-900
with an 8V-71. They are gutless, make a lot of noise, leak a lot of oil, and the
jakes aren't great either. Ether is your friend with a 318 in cold weather.
I did drive a 358 Pete log truck that also had a 318. Fortunately the engine in that
truck had some work done to it, so it ran decent back in the day.
Armstrong steering with a 28in steering wheel and only so much play allowed between pittman and draglink in the old days!
@@akomni-vr5gt try finding a drag link socket today, have not seen one in at least 30 years.
Cousin Eddie. Hey Clark!!
Any glass shop worth a dang should be able to cut window glass to size and then send it out yo have it tempered. That will turn it into safety glass.
You know what would look good on that? A Holmes 750 😁
That would be be old school cool for sure!
New to the channel. Eddie is so cool
Welcome aboard
Restoring old cars requires a strong will and expertise in cars, and not everyone can do it. ❤
It's duel

Your killing me guys. LMFAO 😅😅😅
Project X. The new Beginning!
So how much stuff was fraudulently purchased on your card before you canceled it. Lol
It's amazing how quickly those charges racked up!
